Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    I will say that it's too easy to lump anyone who has something positive to say into the area of "those who didn't have problems." In every post I've made here, I've agreed wholeheartedly that Rhino made some big-ass mistakes here. If you go back and look at some of my earlier posts, I even spell many of them out and make some straight-forward suggestions to Rhino on how to handle it better next time around. But I don't fall into the "all or nothing" camp. So when I see people complaining about something that I don't personally see as Rhino's fault, I'll say so. And remember, in general, more people tend to take the time to post complaints than to post why they're satisfied. That said, I think 90% of the complaints on this site are justified. And Rhino knows it. It's that 10% that seem to just come from rage or from misunderstanding that I have felt compelled to comment on here. Again, if only to offer another voice. I have no stake in backing Rhino beyond the fact that I am really enjoying this music and am glad that they are out there making it available and do not want to see that stop. But I'm not going to let them off the hook for their mistakes and oversights and in not being prepared to handle the distribution of this box set. I've said it before and I hope it holds true that they have probably learned a great deal from their mistakes here and we will (hopefully) see the results of that next time. And while Rhino is a big company that has been around for a long time, this Box Set was, indeed, something a bit off the beaten track for them. That's not an excuse, just awareness. It doesn't mean people shouldn't be angry, aggravated, even bitter. But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, as the old saying goes. All I'm trying to offer is a little perspective on those who tend to feel that Rhino is actively out to screw them over. Releasing the shows individually is just one of those topics that I personally don't feel Rhino deserves shit about (except for their bad-timing). I don't believe they broke any promises here. That does not mean I do not support and stand behind many (if not most) of the other gripes people have. I have always said as much. Again, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. This side or that side. I think I've said about all I need to say here. Have a great week everyone. And enjoy the music. Hal

    I'm totally with you on this one. If you were one of the ones who got put through the ringer of course you are going to be soured. It is easy to be positive if you had no issues and the issues with this release are monumental from the minute it was released - the site crashing, the under-estimation of the demand, the over promise of the box contents and not listing out exactly everything included (I'm not much for surprises), running credit cards then saving that info for 9 months down the road and THEN trying to charge the card, no way to handle address and credit card changes until it was way too late, sending out boxes before getting the card issues straightened out so people could freak out as to why they had not received their box yet, customer service that was atrocious at best until marye kindly elevated it to someone who actually knew what they were doing to getting the box unpersonalized when it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be the first 3000 personalized then it turned to all 7200 and ended with if you got your tag you are lucky. In the big scheme that part is not a big deal but I don't want to give them a free pass - it's not what I ordered so why would I blow that off?? I am not even going to hit on the packaging issues. The wole thing was second rate hell even third or 4th rate which is astonshing from a company this big that has been putting out music for a long long time. The bottom line for me is that I don't like the business model of "as long as these dopes get their music, they won't care about anything else". That is the message I take home from all of this. It's sad, really sad.

The 10k Live Dead shows sets were numbered and sealed, which could have been done with this set too. As it is, no one can truly say that they have a sealed set, unless they don't open it as shipped in the outer carton, and even some of these are retaped as originally shipped. If I remember, it was stated that only 3k would be customized, in that you could give them something to type into what turned out to be a blank space on the arrival inspection sticker. There probably wasn't any specific mention of a number on every box, but that was implied both by previous sets released by the same company, common sense, and the fact that this was a limited edition, in no particular order or limited to these reasons. When you order from a limited edition, I think you can expect to have evidence that yours is one of only 7200, in this case. If there isn't a number on every one, its obvious that you can't be sure that you got your limited edition's worth. Very few would believe that more than 7200 sets will be released, but they did make more than 7200 boxes, since some folks who have had their sets damaged in the mail are getting replacements, I think I saw on the previous posts. Also, if you really have to, take all discs and books out and shake you box to see if there's anything behind the triangle-shaped spaces at the bottom of each column of CDs, but don't ruin your set by cutting into it, as was suggested in a previous post. Finally, someone called in to Tales From The Golden Road today on Sirius / XM, and said that they had received the 1972 / 7200 set. If I had gotten that set, hopefully customized with Jack Straw lyrics, I had planned to donate it either to the GD Archives or to the Library Of Congress . . . When the music reaches to a point when it puts all that pressure on the audience then relaxes back it's at that peak is when the instruments should hit it loudest point in the mix all most to the point where it is going to distort that way when the music relaxes it is still loud enough that you can feel not just hear the music. This way the sound and musical notes are all around you. that is not happening with the mix on this box. When I take and EQ this I can turn down the mid bass and mid high and the give it some volume this way the sound comes right out into the room during the jams then relaxes back down to a nice volume for the softer parts of the music. this way I can feel it as much as hear it.

Have you ever wanted to hear a Chinatown Shuffle, for example, that has all the instrumental breaks from all the version on the tour strung together in the middle of the best overall version? Upside down, yes. Just like on the binding of the book, Grateful Dead is printed upside down relative to the other words. Or is it right side up and inside down. I'm trying to listen in order, and I feel like I could listen to the Dark Star from 4/14 for the next week straight.

Hi everyone. Just need a bit of help. I thought I did not have to put money into my account until September 1st. By the end of August I could see that some people were already getting it. Got my box unexpectedly on Friday 02 September. Missed the "only first 3,000 were numbered" and sent Cust. Svc. an email. And yes, like many, had higher expectations of what in addition to the 73 discs would be included. The posted photo of sketches and map, etc. did hint at more than a book, pamphlet and sticker. All that said, the music is superb!!!!! Thanks to all for making this a reality.

Yesterday was my birthday, and I had hoped.. but all things come to those who wait. I'm envious of all of those of you who are already getting familiar with the music. I was at one of the 72 gigs (Bickershaw) so that's some consolation as I wait. I'm not concerned about the prospect of small numbers of goodies - after all, when I preordered the only option was the boxed set and the only reason for buying was the music. Mine's supposed to be personalised, so the numbering issue (and I agree it's a real one) doesn't affect me personally. But what does concern me - a lot - is the unbelievably inadequate customer service experience I've had. In late July i had several email interchanges about my need to change the cc I had used for the preauthorisation. I was told I would be emailed prior to the dispatch date and given the opportunity to change card if necessary. It never happened, and as the forum threads picked up this issue, I dug deep into the pockets to phone from the UK to make sure the change was recorded. I was assured by a very laid back guy that it had been and all would be well. It hadn't and it wasn't. I had an email on the 31st saying how the European deliveries were going to be handled, which was positive, and then a further email on the 1st saying that my card hadn't processed auccessfully. So another call from the UK - 16 minute wait on the supposedly dedicated international number before anyone answered. Again the rep was calm and positive, took the replacement number and said all would be well. But couldn't actually process the order, only saying that they would contact again if there was a problem. What do I have to do to get these guys to take my money? I really don't want to lose this at this stage....

Arthur I'm assuming your in England as well, I'm looking forward to the Newcatle concert which I was at. On the numbering side, I decided to get back into GD CD listening (the last year or so has been vinyl ) so I decided on the 69 Filmore set which until these posts I hadn't realised was numbered ! And it is.

I finally got it all ripped to HD so i can start to listen to it on my home theater and put the CDs away. I ended up with 3 slighlty ripped covers, the 4 CD ones are very tight and it's hard to do the squeeze technique unless all the panels are unfolded. HINT: If you take the all the CDs out from right to left all at once they slide out very easy and reduce the tightness of the covers. The booklet is a replica of the free tour program they gave out that Lyceum shows and is mentioned in the notes on the 2nd Lyceum show. That and the sticker are the "mystery ephemera", along with the beautiful hardcover book and trunk that are the bonus for the 1st 7200 sets. These clearly are a huge bonus compared to the music only versions for the same price. Everything in the box is pretty much what was offered except for the 7200 indivdually numbered sets. Only difference is I'm in the US...all I did was change cc, no charge yet, no shipment yet, even tho I pre-ordered in Jan. Called cs 3 times, each time they took my cc info. Please take my money and ship my box! I've bought every single thing that's been released! I can't wait to listen to these.... Peace, Michael

For those folks who haven't received their box sets and are worried because their cards haven't been charged yet, I received my box last week and my card still hasn't been charged. I know there are many out there having the same experience. Just because they haven't charged your card yet, doesn't mean your box hasn't been shipped. If that offers a little more hope...

The Box Set came last Tuesday for me- I didn't receive an email saying it shipped, and my card still hasn't been charged. And like magic- it appeared. Here's hoping all of you waiting have such good fortune tomorrow...

Sitting here after a very long working weekend, listening to the Beat-Club disc from 4/21/72 and perusing the magnificent bound book. The photographs are stunning. Wizard's "Notes on the Original Recordings" are a detailed and fascinating account of what it took to actually capture all of that music, in pristine condition. Wow, the end of this Bremen "Other One" is beautiful. Very unique. Blair was right...

I'm still waiting for the box to arrive but my card was charged on August 30th, i.e. the amount is still only reserved. Hopefully it will not be finally charged with a larger sum. Anyway, today I was phoned by a journalist at one of the bigger tabloids in Sweden, who had heard I had purchased the limited edition box. I don't know or from whom he had heard that and I never asked. But I was interviewed about it and why the 1972 European tour was so special. I don't know how much of what I said will end up in the article. We'll have to see about that later. Perhaps if I had already recieved the box, they would make something bigger about it. Anyway, I do hope I will get the box this week. I can't see why international orders should be handled last. It took about 8 hours but I got all the discs ripped. I usually use AAC @320 kbps on my Mac. For this set I used AIFF which is supposedly lossless (or nearly so) at 1411kbps. The sound is excellent. I could hear a difference between the lossy and lossless formats on my speakers and particularly on my amplified headphones. Hope everyone enjoys this set as much as I have been.

Nope, Meeko, I never received an email saying it had shipped. I simply came home one day in late August and found a large box outside my door. It was a complete surprise. And a very welcome one, at that! In fact, I've yet to hear a word from Rhino. I just hope for their sake that everyone follows through with their agreed payments.

I bought E72 when it came out as an LP. I went through three copies because the needle just wore them down. My favorite was side 5 and side 6. Having every single show totally and utterly blows my mind. Coming from the LP generation, who still sees CDs and some sort fo voodoo, this release is nothing short of a miracle. Pigpen still could deliver, and they were well practiced. I could spend the rest of my life listening to these show (ok, so I'm old). I can't get over Pigpen singing in Not Fade Away. Wow. Great job! Thank you. It couldn't have been done better. 286/7200

Unrealistic as it is, I was hoping a DVD of the Tivoli show would have been included as a bonus. Considering that Blair's liner notes refer to it so extensively, I started looking in the trunk a little closer...nothing yet. Not a complaint, but it would have been cool. As others have mentioned, the box just showed up unannounced which was fine but I wondered if anyone's "surprise" was blown. Didn't know what to expect but I'm really impressed with the design and quality of the little trunk. It's actually built to last. Very nice book and program too. The music...I'm employing all my willpower to wait the 2 weeks until my birthday, for which this is a gift. Hah!

Well boys and girls I think all those visions of sugar plums that the sellers had are falling by the wayside. An auction just closed for the huge sum of ...$612. All those BIN for 900-1200 will I think be disappointed. That tells me that Rhino as in most things got it pretty right. Another 1000 boxes would have be more than sufficient to completely satiate real need (not talking about all those that would have bought it if they gave it away for say 300). Even if Rhino doesn't sell shows my guess is there will be plenty on ebay by Christmas. Once again I would like to thank everyone involved for the idea, the work and the results it went beautiful for mostall. The problems I see here all relate to wanting to change something (address CC etc) and some problems were to be expected there. I contacted customer service several times on this product and have done business with them for years and have never had a bad result (not to say it can't happen, just not often). The band picked well when they turned things over to Rhino. Now about that all Greek box. Just kidding I think it will be a while before we see something of this size. I jus hope they still have smaller ltd editions down the road

This weekend I checked out disc 3 of Lille and the DARK STAR from 4/8 that I've been hearing so much about. The sound and playing was impeccable on both. I enjoyed the story from the liner notes on the 5/13 from Lille. Quite the story...Wow! Just good stuff I'm looking forward to spending more time with these...

ok so it kinda put my mind to rest to find out that Im not the only desperate soul here in merrie england waiting for the call to advise me of a large package blocking my driveway.. sure thing i have had emails keeping me informed of the situation at the pre-release stage, but since then, well, its one anxious person hereabouts... my thought is that there is a warehouse somewhere in darkest portsmouth with a whole stash of the blighters waiting for some brave soul to brave the wind and the rain..

Yep, on the subject of England, i'm still waiting for my personalised edition to arrive. The dosh has been taken from my account and on the premise that no money will be taken until the beast ships, i guess i will be in receipt of it sooner rather than later. Obviously looking forward to this monumental release, but keeping things in perspective, i've about 2TB of official live stuff by the ABB, Mule, WSP, Ratdog and many others besides to be going on with. I just hope i live long enough to get through it all !!!. Thanks to all involved in continuing with these fabulous projects...keep them coming !. Will post when the case arrives. Ian.

Pretty sure that as far as banks/credit card companies operate, that it doesn't matter if you never received email or your card hasn't been charged and you received the box. You will eventually see the charge, even if you cancelled your card because basically you gave authorization back whenever-Feb? march?, and they (GDP/Rhino) simply had that authorization on hold. I've had to cancel cards in past due to lost wallets and the charges always carry over to new numbered cards. If not, that'd be a RIDICULOUS screw up for TPTB and some dishonest customers out there..... I managed to get thru half the box before ripping one sleeve-Jahrundert hall 4/26. (Which mix sounds even better than HYH to my ears, anyway) Bummer. The design is aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic and all that, but I agree with some that it's still too easy to rip them. They come out much easier than a lot of my Road Trips do, though; in fact, some of those will get stuck in there, with the left side of the disc getting attached to the glue inside the paperboard, so that when ya finally get her out it has some stickiness on edge of discs! My Egypt '78 was big problem w/that) Also wish the slots (slats?) of the box were a wee bit wider and taller, especially on the four disc shows as it's too easy to smush the front corners when putting them back in. Minor complaints, though. None of this really matters precisely because I'm being careful, but wouldn't wanna leave this out at a party and let any old drunkie deadhead pal (I've got lots) just whip out a show and hear that cry of "What's wrong w/these friggin' things, can't get this Lyceum disc out, wanna hear it, dammit,.....whhooops, sorry, man." NO. No, I'm too old and my deadhead heart too weak for playing that game when entertaining....

For those concerned about keeping the heavy hardcover book in its pocket in the box, I wonder if anyone else considered that the box should be opened like a book. When I do this, the hardcover book stays where it should be and there's no weight or pressure on the hinges - which many have identified as potentially breaking after too much stress. Seems like this is the way the box is meant to be opened. Or did someone else mention this already? Good luck to everyone still waiting. You're going to love it!
