    Good Call 1stshow78

I was listening to that part with your comment in mind. I kept thinking " That sounds like Vince Guaraldi. " So I googled" Did Vince G ever play with the Grateful Dead" Guaraldi moved to Warner Bros. Records in the late Sixties and made three albums for that label. In 1971 he became an unofficial member of the Grateful Dead, jamming with them in Bay Area concerts while the group was between permanent keyboardists." Keith must have gotten pointers from him being Keith was classically trained and picked up on his style. Thanx for pointing that out.

    11-17-72

That TOO has amazing avant-garde jazz improvisation in the 18-28 min. mark that includes some Keith at his very best.
    Cheers

Welcome back to the Tapers’s Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1971, 1972, and 1973, a trio of great years in Dead history.

Our first stop this week is in Autsin, TX, on 11/15/71 where we have the first set including a rare first set Dark Star: Truckin' ; Bertha ; Playing In The Band; Deal ; Jack Straw ; Loser; Beat It On Down The Line; Dark Star > El Paso > Space > Jam  ; Casey Jones ; One More Saturday Night.

Next is a magnificent jam from 11/17/72 in Wichita, where we have Truckin'>Other One>Brokedown Palace. A couple of American Beauty classics sandwiching a psychedelic masterpiece.

Lastly this week is the start of the first set from 11/21/73 in Denver, where we have Me And My Uncle; Sugaree ; Jack Straw; Dire Wolf ; Black Throated Wind  ; Big Railroad Blues ; Mexican Hat Dance Tuning ; Mexicali Blues; They Love Each Other ; Looks Like Rain  ; Here Comes Sunshine.

Be sure to stop by next week for more music from the vault.

Yes ... and that very cool jam even includes (to my ear) Keith 'interpolating' a couple of bars of "Over the Rainbow", as this twister-like Other One whirls through.
I'm not sure there's an identifiable reason, but 11.17 was (and is still) an all-time great day on the GD calendar (!!): Albuquerque '71, Wichita, and the Pauley Pavilion show in '73.
