"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

1973 - This one is simply monstrous. It sputters a bit getting started, but by the time of China/Rider, there is no turning back. Yes, that TOO jam segment looks great on paper and it lives up to your wishes. There are a couple of aud patches and neither one is pitch corrected. These are minor blemishes, and this show will enjoy much play around here.

Listened to the first 4-5 shows last year and think I went in to much. Just listened to '68 and found it amazing! Jerry's guitar sounds so happy and bouncy. Rough sound at first and Phil is to high in the mix and Bobby to far back, but it gets better. 1967 is crazy good. No doubt primal Dead. The sound is very fresh. Has there ever been music like that since? No band could match these guys live.

Who scared away Kate? Stop doing that. I really miss her posts. Did she erase one below? Here are some thoughts thus far. I also have song-by-song notes, too long for here: 1966 – As you would expect, this show features embryonic versions of many songs that grew to much greater proportions in later years. It also contains a bunch of relative rarities, and it all sounds pretty good. I think this is a great choice to open the box, even if a couple of songs are incomplete. The vibe is very pizza parlor. 1967 – As expected again, our heroes have audibly expanded their musical talents by this time and have incorporated more original tunes into their act. The sound quality here is as good as possible, since it was mixed from an archived 8-track source tape, only one of two multi-tracks in the whole box. Pig is big on this show. I like his songs best, plus “New Potato Caboose”. “Viola Lee Blues” also got a lot of love from listeners, and while I think it’s grand, you could probably find a hotter one or two. 1968 – This is a short show, and it really takes off about halfway through, with the early rendition of “Dark Star”. The sound is a little rough, and probably would have prevented release in a stand-alone context. So we are lucky to have this little unpolished gem, and I for one will certainly give it an occasional spin. The jams are big, big, big. 1969 – There was some chatter about this show being in the same league as the famous Fillmore West run of just a few days hence. But it is not of that caliber, and because it shares so many songs with that more snazzy series of shows, I probably won’t be listening much to this one. I do particularly like the take on “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”. 1970 – This is the clear winner thus far. The sound is fuzzy at times, and the organ is but a shadow, but the playing makes up for any audio slights. Do not miss the jam out of “Drums”, nor the jam in “Dancing in the Street”. In fact, do not miss any of this show. 1971 – As much as I love the 1970 show, I find this one somewhat spotty, mainly due to under-rehearsed new songs and one inexcusable cut in “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad”. The good stuff is good, however. Again, there is little chance this show would ever have seen the light of day if not for this giant thematic collection of goodies. 1972 – Are there any truly bad shows from this year? I think not. This one is marvelous, with only a couple of rough spots and two big jam vehicles to make up for any transgressions. I could see this as a Dave’s Pick, or whatever series you name. It will take its rightful place alongside all other official releases from 1972. You know what to expect here, and you get it.

good thing you dont have to pay to watch your seaside chats,, the audio is awful, a little thing called wind makes it worse than listening to an awful audience tape. For somebody who is always picky about sound quality, ya might want to get those things fixed, so its not painful to watch. http://www.worldworx.tv

This is just a REALLY solid show, from beginning to end. There aren't a lot of super highlights, nor are there any clunkers, in my opinion. The Casey Jones opener is really strong, and the rest of the first set just continues in it's footsteps. Again, nothing stand-out, but everything is just really, really good. I particularly enjoyed "Me and Bobby McGee" (which I'm not normally big on) and "Ain't It Crazy (The Rub)". The shortened PITB near the end of the first set is also a nice change from the longer, jammy PITBs that would become the band's norm. The second set also is a good one, with my personal highlights being Truckin', The Other One and NFA. I hate to sound so repetitive, but really, there's nothing bad to say about this show and there are really no stand-out, blow your mind moments. It's just a really good show. Show rating: B+

Moving into a new decade, the Dead don't miss a beat. The first time I listened to this show I was driving my car to work early in the morning. I thought... "Wow... this is a nice "Cold Rain & Snow" opener as it came to a delicious conclusion. Little did I know I was about to be ripped from my peaceful, easy, early-morning bliss by a sound which can only be described as the shriek of a banshee following the opening number. Woooooooo!!!! Ahh... Bobby Weir welcomes us all to Winterland. Let me just say... this show is a GEM. It's got everything I want in a GD show... energy, an interesting setlist, and some top-notch performances. CR&S opener, as mentioned, is a very nice version. It's followed by a great China Cat > Rider, which would only be better if Jerry hadn't screwed up the lyrics at what I believe to be the most critical point of this pairing. "Technical Difficulties" then ensue, which provide for some entertaining on-stage banter, followed by some more blood-curdling screams from Mr. Weir. "Mama Tried" is straight-forward as always, and done well here. Then, the show REALLY starts for me when they break out "It's A Man's World", with Pig laying down the vocals. A song I wish they'd played more often. A very early "Candyman" follows, and you can tell that the boys are still working this one out a bit. A great "Hard to Handle" and an unremarkable "Cumberland Blues" close out the first disc. The second disc starts with a big, fat, tasty "Cryptical Envelopment" sandwich, with "Drums" and some jamming leading into an awesome "The Other One" as the filler in that sandwich. Nicely done, boys! A great version of "Dire Wolf" follows and then the boys stretch their legs and get into "jam mode" and kick into a high-energy "Dancing in the Street". The show closes with an absolutely high-energy, delightful Lovelight > NFA > Lovelight which goes on for about 20 minutes! Overall, a fantastic show with very few "boring" moments for me. High point for me is definitely the first half of the second disc, but it's followed closely by the final 20 minutes of the show. Show grade: A-

Sixtus, I was disapointed as well. The 30 Trips 1975 Eleven Jam is not the actual melody that underlies the vocal portion of the The Eleven, it's the bass line that they all jam to during the second part of the Eleven (so for example if you tune into the 10 minute mark of the Two From the Vault version, that's what they're playing on the 30 Trips 1975 Eleven Jam).

What a horrible disappointment and amateurish display of piss poor planning . Why is there such a shortage these days of anyone who can do anything right the first time ? I find it incredibly difficult to put any kind of positive spin on this , just abysmal customer service and lack of respect for a loyal fan base . We are everywhere? Yup , and we are all fools for accepting this treatment as normal ... PS- John Mayer can go suck a friggin egg

That's pretty good. So the warehouse was in Tianjin? Perhaps the wood burnt etching of the band members names ignited the lacquer that burned some boxes that started the explosion that leveled the town that delayed our box set? That would be something.

Was hoping this would be over with by now so I could see if there were plans to sell in smaller sets, but dead.net has found another way to amaze me with terrible customer service - feel really bad for those who have purchased this box only to see Christmas delayed this year... Wonder what the issue is... Did they run out of money during production because they did not sell as many as needed? Wonder what the real amount sold is, since they seem to be using the "get it while it lasts" line in cry wolf proportions. Whats also is amazing is how much people just take it on the chin over and over again without even a word- over priced box during a celebration year, delayed shipping, box cutters (my spring other one was sliced nice so I know that story), no view of the contents (probably not developed or they realized it was too much of a cut in profit like E72), I can go on but you get the point. Sorry for the negativity, but my rant is just a way of saying, enough is enough - get your act together dead.net Rhino, ptb, whoever you are - make a reasonably priced product we can all enjoy (without limited editions - such cheese) and we will be there to buy and sing your praises for others to come buy.

Well this sucks. Been a shitty 6 months and this just adds to it. While I'd like to be in the "hey as long as they get it right" camp, this type of stuff is not rocket science. You are releasing a boxed set, not a new SUV. Get your release date correct. Top if off, do not charge me a month ahead of time (when originally it was going to be about 10 days from release date). This "mid October" is bullshit. When things are this expensive I start to play hardball. If you charge me on 9/17, I better have it by 10/17 or I file fraud charges with my CC company. This is a business deal. Pure and simple. Just because it is Dead music means nothing in terms of a business deal. Deliver it in 30 days from charge or you can shove it. What a blunder. 2015 has been the "year of Dead milking" and this whole fiasco (and it is a fiasco) is just another black eye. I guess I have a week or so to re-consider the purchase which I was doing so anyway. I guess we should have known (and been the wiser) when even the video on the product was a piss poorly produced post. Peace Roger

I really don't want to be negative but from the announcement of this box onwards there has been a cavalcade of self-inflicted wounds... there is no way of nicely saying this but Rhino/whomever have really screwed this release - please begin to redeem things now by being honest about when it may really ship, by telling us what we are really getting [god you have $50 million of our money and we don't know what we have bought] and how you will ensure the rest of this goes smoothly... and for those in Europe who have bought this can you please ensure a shipping which pre-pays the inevitable customs duties...

Maybe some of the folks who are beside themselves with anger and exhibiting questionable behavior could take a deep breath, listen to some of the many hours of free music this site provides every week, enjoy the digital version of 30 Trips that will be available on the originally anticipated release date, and reflect on the fact that The Powers That Be are trying to present a unique and fabulous product for a music-loving community that is tiny by industry standards. I really thought that everyone who is into a band that stopped performing 20 years ago would be old enough to handle such a minor disappointment.

So, on Monday I received and email letting me know that the Box will ship on or around Sept 18th. No one knew at that time that this was going to be delayed? I think a group of chimpanzees could have done this better. I dont really have an issue with the delay itself but do have an issue with being charged a month before it is "supposed" to ship.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Boxes will be delayed for 1 month. Seems we made the boxes out of wood and they got infected with termites in our North Carolina warehouse while waiting for the person with box cutter to come back from vacation. He's the key to the distribution system and like "Kilroy was Here", our friend likes to leave his mark. We have decided to replace the faulty infected wood boxes with high quality cardboard, like they use in roach motels, with a color xerox of the box's original artwork glued on the sides for extra tensile strength. The box contents are carefully being fumigated in Tijuana and require 2 weeks of quarantine before being allowed in the US, you understand. The CD cover's we never showed you, are those Road Trip style ones people always talk about in the comments. Any holes or bite marks are part of the limited nature of the release and prove the authenticity, or they could be considered psychedelic, what ever works for you. Warning do not eat any bug carcasses you might find in the box, smoking or licking the scroll is not advised you will go Naked Lunch. That is all.

Okay, I never go negative but this is horse shit. They're not shipping but still taking our money????? WTF? Are we supposed to happily accept the delay because they used the "just exactly perfect" line on us? Dave said in his video they've been planning the release since 2012. Surely they could have told us sooner and spared us the disappointment of an 11th hour delay. Still taking our money is the real kick in the nuts here. This just shows they don't give a shit about us....AT ALL. I can afford this box but I know there are many who have really stretched themselves to get a copy. For Christs sake, give those Heads an extra month to raise the money and ease their burden.

I give you credit Steve73 if you consider being charged $700 and change over a month before a "ship" date as a minor disappointment. Its simple. Do not charge me until it is ready to ship and you can take as long as you freaking want. Once you have my money, I want my shit. Sort of like payday. I worked I want paid. Would you consider it a minor disappointment if there was a 30 day delay in your pay check? The fact that this is just a music boxed set does not mean shit when I am out money. Charge me on October 10th and I shut the hell up. Charge me on 9/17 and I call the CC company on 10/18 if I do not have it. I urge others to do the same. It is not personal, it is business. This is just a total fuck up considering we got an e-mail a week ago making certain our CC info was correct. They had to know at that time the delay was at foot. Feels dishonest. just sayin'

All for cutting Grateful Dead Merchandising some slack. I've bought tons of music here with almost no complaints. Basically the only place I buy CDs nowadays. That being said the past few months have been a very rough patch indeed. Pre-sold recordings of 5 hour concerts that turned out to be much shorter and haven't yet addressed the discrepancy. Shipped out a lot of damaged merchandise. And now the 50th anniversary (which had been hyped mercilessly) flag ship release 30 Trips apparently has encountered "some problems." Hmmm.

Ummm, yeah. At this point in the game a product that was announced 3 months ago should already be "just exactly perfect" so skip all the self righteous posturing. This is about supply, demand and questionable business tactics . What could possibly take another month in this endeavor? In addition, I never was one who subscribed to the listen for free aspect , I had tapes back in the day, but currently listen to the stuff I have acquired by paying my hard earned money for and have more than enough to get thru a measly 30 or so days. This also has nothing to do with age, I can wait for a while longer and I have no intention of canceling this item ,it does have a lot to do with the fact that a product was promised to a loyal and undying fan base and address confirmation emails were sent out less than 72 hours ago . Then all of a sudden, oops , we done bad ?. Total first world problem , but you can't really blame people for being disappointed.

Everyone brought up great points about the time they had to get this right, the fact that they're still taking our money, the past history of poor service (box cutters, etc, and let us not forget the opening day server crash that screwed up everybody's credit cards and bank accounts). I would like to see a video with Dr. Rhino and Dave Lemieux offering an EXPLANATION, an apology, and a discount off all box sets. Money in their investment portfolio for a month is money out of my investment portfolio for a month. I swear, every Subject line of every posting should be "Lemieux and Rhino". God I hope I spelled his name right, I can never remember if it's i before e except after C, or e before i except when they lie...but yeah, 5/25/77, great show...

You made me laugh my AO!I don't think anyone was charged yet - at least I wasn't. Rhino wants to deliver a "just exactly perfect" product. We can all listen to whatever we want to hear the "official" day of release through the Ethernet connection provided. Let's face it - it's either that or an inferior product - and this is pretty ambitious on so many levels. The only weird thing is: Why at the last minute? Please don't take this the wrong way. - slim

Slim, I don't know man. First of all, my account was charged: 09/08/2015 DAI*SHOPDEADNET.COM $751.43 Secondly, I don't think there is any problem with the product itself. I don't think they have a clue how many "good" sales they have (i.e. people whose credit cards were good 3 months ago, whose cards are still good today). And remember that email we all got about calling in if our credit card info needed to be updated? That info was all taken down manually, so who knows how many of those got screwed up. And how about all of the sell-outs, oh we have 30 more, then sell-out, then oh we have 15 more. I really think they need a month to actually charge the cards and determine how many sales and shipments they really need to make. They have no clue how many sales they have.

First off, ...no problems with the W8, being charged next week, or anything else. Anyway, just got off the phone with Mike, last week an awesome deadnet rep., 4got her name but she, like every deadnet rep I've spoken with, is AWESOME!. For me, the concern was that my credit card information had changed. The deadnet rep fixed it last week. Today, or yesterday, received an email that contradicted the changes the rep made, last week. So, I spoke w/ deadnet rep. Mike and...it was all good! Team deadnet, Don't let negative vibes and serial complainers get the best of y'all! I LOVE MY DEADNET TEAM! Jeez Louise, try to focus on your life and let the good peeps at Rhino/Deadnet do their thing, which is uncharted! Namaste....hey, hey! -pdawg 'woof'

Does anyone really think they'll provide enough bandwidth for all of us to stream the shows on 9/18? Either the files will be crappy low-low-def or the stream will crash. And all it will cost is $700.00

Seriously. Our society has become a bunch of fucking crybabies. Am I bummed about the delay? Sure. We will still get a link to the music on time to hold us over... I served 30 years in the Marine Corps, lived in the crappiest part of Africa for 18 months, did three combat tours, etc. This is nothing. But the whining is annoying, so put your big girl pants on! Be thankful for what you have and what you're going to receive.Peace out!!!!

I Wish my card was charged. That would be a guarantee. Maybe the Dilithium Crystals couldn't take the load? I did get an e-mail saying my card would be charged September 17. And it is one more in a long string of WTF's lately. Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile. Might be time to throw 8/27/72 on and enjoy the magic. For those keeping score at home you can pick your own magic. The box is comin' any day now, don't worry 'bout it, no. Been so long I felt this way and time sure passing slow..... For what it's worth....we can't change whatever the issues are. I'm disappointed but I will get by. - slim

Funny how you include all the complaints about your life while you're telling other people not to complain isn't it?

I can wait another month... I guess. But what I'm thinking is why the 4 mos pre sale on a limited run 6500 qty box set? and the pre charge then re charge? its sold out... no we found more... You wanna sell out a limited qty box set fast? Maybe produce manufacture and warehouse the issue then make the announcement with immediate availability! with all the hype and sneak peaks, put a counter on the web site and when the numbers start to roll down. Heads will be snapping them up in record time. Just a thought....

It must be nice to work for Rhino/GD. I would be fired if I missed a major deadline... I'm unimpressed with the professionalism, or should I be impressed with the chaotic semi-functioning business model?

...there's a plan..think about it.... Maybe they've had so few pre-orders for the FTW box - that they're delaying boxzilla to coincide with that release and include it as a freebie for all 30 trips pre-orders... To be fair that's really not really a value-add (esp. for the various f*** ups along the way) - but it would be better than nothing - certainly better than a bonus disc of Vince tunes that's for sure...... Saying that...maybe they're preparing a Bad Trips bonus disc lol...wave to the wind > samba in the rain > long way to go home > childhood's end etc... Dave...we await your response...and maybe then you can address the 100s of unanswered questions about the FTW box too...

....wow!! I myself am a patient man and can wait, but the emails leading up to this event are a bit concerning. $700 is quite a bit of scratch. Some respect would be nice. $100 off the top would ease the pain. $150 would be better....now onto Garcia's Shining Star cd....a diamond in the rough....and it seems pretty rough out there....

why we never got an un-boxing video or photos of the insides; you need to have an actual product in order to reveal it.

I've spoken to the Dead.net team - the issue is the names around the box - until they were manufactured, no-one had realised that they had missed Vince's name off (Bobby did the same when he forgot to invite Vince on the Other Ones tour right) - an easy mistake to make lol.... No dramas here.....but that's the scoop ;)

philledawg, dedhead76, lol talk about your pacifists - everyone who bought a set has a right to complain, especially considering the history of poor customer service and spotty product quality from these clowns. wow, was someone at customer support nice to you on the phone? that's sweet. businesses that operate like this get hosed by the better business bureau all of the time, because it's consumer abuse. i can see you guys hollering across the prison cell at each other while bubba's showing you who's boss "ez stop complaining, no big deal, there's worse things in liiiFFE"
