John Ferrigno - Here are some of my favorites of the official stuff, I included some studio albums. I really like the 1st record, young energy and the Morning Dew and Viola Lee Blues - though some may disagree on this one. A must have is Anthem of the Sun - very experimental and of course - Live/Dead - one of the best live records ever with Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven and Lovelight. A switch in direction were the more country and folk influenced American Beauty and Workingman's Dead - classic songwriting. Also Skull and Roses has some rockin songs and Europe 72 is a must have.
As for live discs Dick's Pick's #4 is essential. I could go on but that is a start.
After all of these or even before you need to find a copy of Cornell, May 8 1977 and Sunshine Daydream -Creamery benefit August 27, 1972 - incredible live shows that you can get download from archive.org.

I have been lurking around for a little while so I ought to say hello. I am a product of southern Illinois and I work for a large printing company. I make the plates used on the printing presses on the graveyard shift. My home internet sucks(dialup) so I occasionally peek in on the website at work. I have two daughters 16 and 11 and a 1 yr. old son. I do not get out too often to see bands anymore but I still feel like a deadhead. Most people around here do not get it. I forgot how much fun I had until I started reminiscing around the site. The ten or so shows I saw were outstanding moments in my life and I regret that I could not embrace the whole traveling tour thing but my personal life and obligations held me back. Maybe I was too scared to commit to that lifestyle? Anyway the "escape from reality" short trips were some of the best times of my life. If anyone used to run with the UNCLE JOHNS BAND scene in carbondale,IL I was there from 84-90 plus. Good times as well. That was about as close to a dead show as you could get around here unless you went to St. Louis to see JAKE'S LEG. We did have Jake's Leg at a party in Makanda once but the rain cut their set short. My name is Mick Flaire, and I am a Deadhead.
I consider myself as having been a member of the Grateful Dead family since January 14th 1967, the day I stumbled upon them playing at the far end of the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park as a twelve year old attending the Human Be-in.
That fateful day changed my life forever!
My main connection to the Grateful Dead is that I supervised the BGP overnight security crew (Bluecoats) that guarded the band’s gear onstage as well as the entire venues in between multiple shows for over 12 years, from August 4th, 1979 (Oakland Auditorium), until February 22nd, 1992 (Oakland Coliseum Arena).
We also traveled with the band outside of Northern California on many occasions during those years.
In 1987 alone, on the heels of the highly successful “In The Dark” album, we went to Irvine Meadows in Irvine, CA (4/17-19), the County Fairgrounds in Ventura, CA (6/12-14), Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR (7/19), Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, CA (7/26), & the Town Park in Telluride, CO (8/15 & 8/16) for the Harmonic Convergence.
The shows that we did locally in ’87 included the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, CA(1/28-30), the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, CA(3/1-3), the Frost Amphitheater in Stanford, CA(5/2 & 5/3), the Laguna Seca Recreation Area in Monterey, CA (5/9 & 5/10), the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA (6/19-21), the Oakland Coliseum Stadium in Oakland, CA (7/24), the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, CA (8/22 & 8/23), the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA (10/2-4), the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, CA (11/6-8) and then finally ending the year with 4 shows at the Oakland Coliseum Arena in Oakland, CA (12/27, 28, 30, 31) to end the year.
I’m quite sure many of you attended a lot of those shows, if not all of them, lol.
A little over a year later my current band Dog Beaver (www.myspace.com/dogbeaver) was conceived along with my co-founder Kenny Briggs, in the empty Grateful Dead production office at the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium on February 5th, 1989 just 8 hours before they were to load in to start their 3 day run to celebrate Chinese New Years.
We will be celebrating our 20 year Anniversary together as a band with yet another performance in the Poster Room Lounge at The Fillmore in San Francisco, where we’ve been playing once a month since it re-opened in 1994, giving us the distinction of having played in that building more times than any other artist in the history of that venue!
Ironically enough the last time we played in the Poster Room Lounge on October 3rd, the headliner on the main stage of The Fillmore was none other than the Dark Star Orchestra, recreating the Frost Amphitheater show from May 2nd, 1987, a show in which Kenny Briggs and I did the overnight security shift for!
Exactly 19 years to the day of that Frost Amphitheater show, on May 2nd 1969 I attended my first Bill Graham produced Grateful Dead show, at the Winterland Arena, with The Jefferson Airplane headlining, and latin percussion great Mongo Santamaria as the opener.
That was the beginning of many, many Dead shows that I would attend over the next 26 years.
The following year, in 1970 as a 15 year old junior at Balboa High School in San Francisco, I was a founding member of the Grateful Dead-influenced band Beluga Whale.
Just days after the band had released "Workingman's Dead", we went back to our bass player Don’s basement on 16th Avenue and Lincoln, and proceeded to learn “Uncle John’s Band” & “Casey Jones”, to go along with “Good Lovin’”, “Turn on Your Lovelight”, “St. Stephen”, “Good Morning Little School Girl”, and “Johnny B. Goode”, which we’d already been playing for a few months.
I have loved the Grateful Dead’s music for more than 41 years now, and that line from “Truckin’” couldn’t be truer in my case… “What a long strange trip it’s been!”
Some of my most cherished memories are the countless times that I heard my boss & mentor Bill Graham put the band on stage with this time honored introduction… “they’re not the best at what they do, they’re the only ones that do what they do… would you please welcome, the Grateful Dead!”

We are peace lovin', tie-dying hippies
In May 2007 we went to our first Schwagstock. We absolutely fell in love with Camp Zoe and The Schwag. We started dreaming about vending and touring concert festivals including all of the Schwagstocks...Nothing but pipe dreams we thought at the time. We came back for two more Schwagstocks in '07, and it became harder to leave every time.
In November of '07 after a lay-off, and a foreclosure, we threw all caution to the wind and liquidated our '95 Mazda RX7, bought a converted Skoolie, and started doing tie-dye. Virgil already knew the basics, and toghether we're learning and experimenting with every batch.
On New Year's Eve '07/'08 we vended our first concert/camping venue at Skunkape Farm in Everglades City, FL, with Crazy Fingers. We had a blast and sold almost half of the inventory we had come with. We were stoked and now really felt that this might work after all. We vended two more small events in the South Florida area, the 10th Annual Medical Marijuana Rally in Miami, FL, and the Open Grass Music & Arts Festival in Lake Worth, FL. Inbetween we would set up on the side of the road about once a week to sell a few dollars worth of tie-dye, and then buy more white stuff to dye. We did this all to get ready for our big adventure of road-trippin-tie-dye-sellin'-hippies.
First stop, the Wanee Festival in Live Oak, FL!...ok, maybe the third stop if you count our breakdowns. 'Gherkin?' our Skoolie has some mechanical issues, but she's very cozy on the inside. We made it to the Wanee Festival rollin' in on fumes, but had a GREAT couple of days and made enough money to pay for the next couple of break-downs, and the $1100 in gas it took to make it to Camp Zoe four days later, just in time for SpringJam 4.
We've vended every Schwagstock this year, and have also been fortunate enough to tie-dye some Schwag Merchandise for the band. We have lived this year on very little money, alot of hard work (but we've both worked alot harder for alot less), have met the most beautiful and kind people, and have had the best time of our lives.

We really LOVE making dyes...concerts...camping...concerts w/camping are best...we Love to travel (in da bus)...Love meeting Kind people...Love the Schwag...Love Camp ZOE...but most of all "WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN and "WE LOVE EACHOTHER"... and don't forget that ZOE = life and life at ZOE = HEAVEN ON EARTH!!!...

I went to all the schwagstocks summer 06. couldn't make any since I'm out of the country right now. But will be back in MO this spring. Plan on schwagging my tail. I had great fun there camp zoe is awsome. Cold springs to refresh in great atmosphere. I hung out with Dan the Mead man and Tim and AJ who do the mind machine, sound familiar. anyway hope to see you guys this spring and summer. I usually wear this nice tophat with feathers and guatamalen vest. if you see me say hi. I'll be looking for the bus. As I remember there weren't that many if any buses there really. anyway welcome to dead.net

I got on the bus in the post-In the Dark wave of the late 80's, and right until the end. 52 of the best days and nights of my life. Of course, since Uncle J. died, other things have taken over my life, but being a Deadhead is in my blood. Last night I had the BEST dream of an amazing show, and it got me all nostalgic. So I thought I'd come by here and see who's hanging around. I would love to get to know some kind folks of a like mind again!

Thanks for the welcome! And for the chat too. Glad you had a good time at DSO- they're a great band. Saw them only twice,first back in May-they played the show from 11/1/73-nice and long. Second time was last Friday(after Thanksgiving) and they did a fine,rockin' rendition of 7/7/78 Red Rocks with a double encore and a bonus song-How Sweet It Is-and it WAS sweet!. The highlights for me was the Scarlet>Fire>Dancin', and the fact that Donna was there. oh,yeah-i had a front row spot too!!! Will talk to u soon in the chatroom. See ya...

...to say hello! I'm in the UK and discovered the 'Dead about the time of "Dylan and the Dead" - so late '80s I suppose. Music that says something to everyone if they'll only listen! Never got to see them but will try next time any of the incarnations are over here. I'm a vice principal of a high school and teach science but still find time to introduce our students to real music - its amazing how many of them listen and enjoy! Great that this site exists and I'll be back often.

New to the site, but not to the Dead. I started enjoying their music in '74 when college roommates turned me on to them. Saw Saunders & Garcia at CW Post in the fall of '74 before seeing the Dead. After that, I got into their music big time. I particularly like the early stuff through the early '80's. Most of the shows I attended (that I can remember) were in the late '70's. I was lucky enough to have been present at the mind-blowing-altering show at Barton Hall. More about that later. Just wanted to say hi and I'm looking forward to sharing more stories, and reading about yours, as we continue this long strange trip!

This is an awesome site. Not really computer wise but am enjoying looking around and discovering. My first show was at Alpine Valley in 84. Wow, I just figured out that I was eighteen at the time. It's been interesting trying to remember all the shows I went to after that and there were a lot! Great times, awesome people and cool places to have seen, not to mention the incredible music that has inspired me in so many ways. Well life has taken one of those turns . . . I should be filling out the bankruptcy papers waiting for me on the desk but have decided to avoid them for awhile longer and figure out how to post here instead. Marriage to a non dead head and life in suburbia what was I thinking? Tried to get my man to the Rat Dog show at Red Rocks this year so he could see but he couldn't make it. I went anyway and had a very cool time. First show I've been to in probably ten years. Got to 'hang' with my old brotherfriends J. & R. meet new friends and hear real live music - thanks Bobby! - it did wonders for my spirit.
I have a fabulous eight year old daughter who is the light of my life. She has just discovered a talent for playing guitar. Do you think that all that Jerry and the good ol GD she heard while driving in the car with her mom had anything to do with it??

in Baton Rouge yesterday and emailed asking if anyone new how Bob Fried died?
I can't seem to glean any info off the web so was hoping that some folks on the west coast might remember anything (besides passing away in San Mateo in 1974?).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

(p-town!!!!) but am now in sub-zero minnesota. never got a chance to see the Dead although my parents have seen then multiple times in Eugene and the pacific northwest. im 16, and although i wish i could see the Dead, i still think there is great music still around today (moe., STS9, i guess Phish since there back, and others)...hmmmm what else.....

I'm 34 years old and live in Tennessee. I'm not "new" to the Grateful Dead (several years ago I bought one of their CDs and I still enjoy it) but I've gained a new appreciation for them after finding the Grateful Dead channel on XM radio. I love their laid back style (I appreciate that more and more the older I get) and their gentle nature. I love just about any kind of music that shows talent and creativity. Some of my favorite performers are Neil Young, Frank Zappa, Roger Miller and Jerry Reed, just to name a few.
I'm not musically gifted but I took guitar lessons as a teenager and I would like to start playing again one day, if I ever have the leisure to do so.
I'm a registered nurse and I'm working on becoming a nurse practitioner. I currently work in a nursing home (I love old people, and the dementia patients are the most fun to be around!)
I love simple country living and am trying to find ways to integrate this into my hectic life. The more hectic life gets the more I want to simplify it. I have not met many friends in life. I've met a lot of users but only one or two people I could really call a friend. I'm not needy, far from it, I just would like to begin associating with a different calibre of people than most of the ones around where I live. I'd also like to raise my children (I have four) to appreciate the simple life.
I realize I'm just rambling away here...anyway, I'm glad to be here.

I've been a fan of the dead since 9th grade, 4 years ago. Since then I've blossomed into a full fledged dead head. I've been meaning to join this forum for a while, but I guess I'm just getting around to it. Because I'm only 19, I've never been to a single dead show unfortunately. I'm a psychology major at the university of Cincinnati.
