I’ve had skipping discs5-5-77 CD2 8-24-72 CD3 Dr Rhino got them replaced pretty quickly. Also, in the Golden Road and Beyond Description Boxes Skullfuck Dead Set CD2 I never tried to get those replaced. Have had some with smudges, glue, fingerprints, but never any scratches or box cutter blues. All played fine once I cleaned them. Why don’t the people who handle these wear gloves? Never had a defective Dick’s Picks. Those CDs are also sturdier. The ones now are thin and flimsy. Cut costs by using less plastic. They probably also use a thinner metal film to hold the data.

Despite the plethora of official releases and boots, I am ever-searching for hard to find exclusive stuff. Most of the time it's radio broadcasts or hissy recordings from some Euro country. Most of the time. Or some shit disc I've bought off a flea market table in Mexico. At least it was only a few bucks... I couldn't help myself. For anyone of a like mindset, easier to find and of fantastique quality is the Complete Studio Rarities Collection. And, the download series. So much quirky, great music lies therein. Go there. On iTunes and usually amazon, etc. As far as all the ocd/anal-retentive, repetitive bitching, it's just exactly that except when the discs don't play. Blah blah, I'm a glass half-full guy, but am in total agreement that all purchased music must be playable. And, with patience, it will be. \m/

Bobby played with Don Was and Friends today at the Hardly Strictly Festival in GGP. Pretty cool, he dived right into Days Between with solid horn section support from Terrance Blanchard and Dave Murray. I predict zillions of youtube posts. I was fortunate and thrilled to be there.

Hello fellow Dead Freaks. I haven't been on dead.net lately, and I don't usually share that much. But I feel maybe I should share a couple of my thoughts and experiences with you.First off, The Box Set. I am sorry to hear that people have had bad experiences with this box set. But, on the other hand I am really glad to know that I was not the only person who has gotten screwed by purchasing this over-priced box of crap. I had to purchase the Box twice. And then I had to send it back for a refund twice. The first box arrived with physical damage to the actual box set itself. OK, problem No.1. Problem No. 2 -> by the time I gotten thru Disc 5 I had encountered so so many defects (skipping,etc...) I lost count and realized that enough is enough! I TRIED FOR 10 DAYS to get some actual customer service for an EXCHANGE. Writing them, and filling out the stupid Request Forms. Even received an "Access Key". Which "Mirrored Back" to me all of my email inquiries.(whatever that was about? Very strange) STILL, I was totally ignored and got nowhere. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL. Sent Box 1 Back. Now, I have painstakingly collected all of the Box sets and all other releases thru the years. It has been expensive, and not always an easy go of it. Especially when you only have one option to obtain this music through Dead.net and is usually always in "Limited Releases". (I have been very blessed to be able to do so and very grateful.) That being said, I bought a 2nd Box Set. The same crap happened again! The box set was absolute junk. So instead of being "totally ignored" again by dead.net customer service, I QUICKLY SENT THIS BOX BACK TOO for a refund. Again. NOW HERE IS MY POINT. I totally feel left out here. This should not happen. There is absolutely NO QUALITY CONTROL AT ALL. Dead.net has really wasted my time and money. I feel as though I have reached a crossroads here. BACK TO MY MAIN POINT. -> "NO ONE IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANYTHING ANYMORE". HIDING BEHIND EMAILS WITH ONE WAY COMMUNICATION IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO DO BUSINESS. It's that simple. IT'S JUST BAD BUSINESS. I also had to shell out $50.00 bucks out of my own pocket to return both these box sets. HOW IS THAT FAIR? So here I sit at the crossroads. Why should I buy another box set or any release for that matter when the product I am buying is probably going to be defective anyway? Why would I even consider buying anything online from a company that doesn't have any reliable customer service available to fall back on? A company that has nobody to talk to? Normally, I would not even consider doing that. If anyone at Dead.net cares at all about doing "Good Business" then they would realize that they have a Huge Problem that absolutely needs to addressed and fixed! The Customer Service that we as consumers deserve from Dead.net has always been terrible. This BS is nothing new. WE DESERVE BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAVE BEEN RECEIVING AND CONTINUE TO GET FROM DEAD.NET CUSTOMER SERVICE. So I implore whoever is running the show at dead.net to FIX THIS PROBLEM NOW, BEFORE YOU RELEASE MORE UNACCEPTABLE DEFECTIVE JUNK TO THE DEAD.NET CONSUMERS. I want to thank my fellow heads for reading listening to this rant? At least I know that someone is hearing my concerns. I'm sick and tired of talking to useless people that just do not care and have no pride in what they are doing. I come from a generation of people who actually had to work for, and earn a living to get ahead in this world. I also Truly Believe that "Communication" and "Awareness" is a good place to start to make this a better world to live in. So "Good Day" Dead Freaks and be "accountable" for something today. You might find that it is actually a good thing, and is something to be proud of.

What a horrendous story-in a fair world you would be compensated for having received such an appalling service. Its one thing to get a damaged product through the post, but its another thing entirely to be then denied the opportunity of being able to talk to someone connected about what has gone wrong. I was lucky enough to get a different, more old fashioned response for a book that I ordered that arrived damaged earlier this year. It wasn't cheap-£75.00-a collection of H.P.Lovecraft's short stories published and issued by The Folio Society. I was out when it was delivered, so the delivery man chucked the parcel over a 12 foot gate at the side of my house, damaging the book. I phoned up the Folio Society, just to tell them what had happened. Someone immediately answered the phone. She also immediately offered to send another book out recorded delivery-at no extra cost to me-which arrived the following day. She suggested I give the damaged copy to charity. What a great way to run a business.

I'm sorry to hear your story, Judy.. I hope in the end it works that it works out as well as it can. I certainly understand how an experience like this can sour the experience.. I am enjoying my box so far.. and 1974 starts today, one of my favorite years. Have you tried sending a PM to MaryE? I hope they make you whole on this..

Just picked up tickets to see The Orb on their 30 year anniversary tour, should be interesting and fun Little Fluffy Clouds anyone? Also picked up Bob Dylan tickets to a sold out show, should be interesting and fun also. Gonna be a great fall. I am interested to see what Bob is putting out nowdays and read some reviews from his most recent tour, seems he's at the piano with no guitar playing at all, has a new band and the stage is set like a living room setting. Also heard he has done rearrangements to some of his old classics that are so different, you can't tell what song it is. Anybody else seen Bob lately? Any comments on the Orb and their live show?

Wow, what a horrible experience, I feel for you and hope that all turns out well. Get Mary involved, she will make things happen for you, she is the best. I agree with you about deadnet's customer service, it is non existent. I had a similar experience with the E72 box and it took me a year of writing, bitching and complaining to get it resolved, but they finally did once Mary was involved. Until dead productions return to the good old USA this type of clusterf**k will continue and just like everything else, we, the fans and consumers of this music must be the ones to rise up and point out these misdeeds. If anyone else ran their business like this, they would be out of business in no time, but, because they have the goods and music we love and want, they can precharge us, not talk to us, outsource their product to crappy manufacturers and pretty much abuse us with no action taken against them. They know they have the goods, and that we want their product, it's is unfortunate that we are treated this way. I feel for you Judy and hope it does not take you a year to get what you paid for. I, for one, will never buy presale from deadnet again, the cost is too high and the probability of failure is just not worth the time and money. I've got enough dead and if I need more etree is back up and running, I will get it there, it's free and Charlie Miller makes a mean sounding recording.

Either you edited your post between the time I first read it and when I decided to log in and respond, or I had an artificial hallucination. I thought I saw you write a line about "WHAT has happened to the human race?" and do not see it now. Anyway, I have your answer. The love of money above all else is what has happened to the human race, or at least the business end of it. I remember the days before voicemail and email, where it was always reassuring to get that voice on the phone to describe your problem to and clarify any misconceptions on the spot. Mostly gone now. Seems like around 1980 was when things started heading that way. Think back about what was happening around then, and you can get an idea why. About whether it's Fair? I'm not sure fairness has much to do with it anymore. But in all fairness, it's what you get in this culture now, not just something that happens at dead.net. I still have good experiences with some customer service departments though, but that usually happens when there is a voice bypass on the voicemail system to get right through to a customer service rep. I just got back from a road trip last night, and my PNW box is waiting for me to pick up with my neighbor across the street. I'm about to find out today whether I'm a lucky one with no issues, or another victim of haphazard quality control. Wish me luck.

Delroy Lindo: I thought Love made the world go round. Gene Hackman: You're right. Love of money. Sad but true.. It started a long time ago but seems to have picked up a lot of momentum with Gordon Gekko.

I saw Dylan in 2015 or 2016; it was a very mellow show with lots of stuff from his last 4 albums and very few classics. Still very good, but different if the Dylan you know is pre-1980 (or even pre-2005). A lot of Frank Sinatra standards and covers. Since then he's opened up the setlist a lot more, with about 10 "Classic Era Dylan" songs per show. It's a good balance. If you haven't seen or heard Dylan lately, I highly recommend 2012's Tempest, which is probably my favorite Dylan album since Desire. Scarlet Town and Pay in Blood are two of the best songs he's ever written.

....one could say money attributed to Jerry's death. By the '90's, the Dead's payroll got so huge, that Garcia wouldn't take a break for fear of the employees well-being. Or so I've heard. A double-edged sword. The band went from a fine tuned machine to a broken one. I didn't consider that back then. I was young and just having fun. Hindsight is 20/20. ....still on vacation but back home now. Bryce Canyon in Utah is so breathtaking. It's gets the Vguy family's highest recommendation. Took a three hour horseback tour. Wake up to find out you are the eyes of the world indeed. Everyone needs to witness it in person. Pictures do not do it justice. In the back of my mind I kept wondering what it would be like while dosed. Sensory overload....

I wonder how many of these have damaged discs. I bought the vinyl set, but haven't pulled the trigger on the box yet; after reading all the complaints here, I might just wait until I find one on Ebay from someone who has successfully ripped all the discs. It will probabaly take as long to sell out as the July 78 box(which hasn't sold out yet...)

Does anyone know if the download issues for the 5/21/74 PITB was resolved? Have been back and forth on wether to go with the downloads or the physical box. I usually get the physical product, but am mostly interested in the music and rip the discs anyhow. The product usually goes back in the shipping box and stored until I have a good place to display, even then it likely would not be all of them.

....drop Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy and you get the complete package. You heard it here first. Or not........is this the correct board to post this? I think so. A Motorhead, Sabbath, Grateful Dead triple bill would be.... incredible.

i think it has been fixed from previous posts.i would like to hear how the digital downloads sound to those that bought them. are the hi res flacs worth it, if you have the equipment to listen to it on? do the alac versions sound as good as the CDs ripped into Itunes? i know it has been asked before by Ziffle, but i don't remember seeing any follow up.

I would love another 1969 release right about now... maybe something from those returned reels? Or October 1972, we've never had anything from then (maybe the vault is utterly void there, though?) And of course October 1973 hasn't been hit since way back at Dicks #19!! Maybe there's no way to clean up that weirdness perpetrated on the Let It Grow of 10/25/73? -- damn shame if so...

Yeah, Bryce Canyon is a one of a kind place. Took my 91 year old mother in law there last fall, and she thought she'd seen everything until then. All of those Utah national parks are unique in their own way. I take hundreds of photos, but none come close to the feeling you get by being there all immersed in it. Bryce blows you away from the rim drive views, but only when you get down into the trails among the spires do you realize the true majesty of the place. Just got back from another trip to Sedona, which I consider the most beautiful small town I've been to, even up against places like Telluride, Aspen, Santa Fe and Laguna Beach. The red rocks there have a mood for every sun strike, cumulus cloud filled blue sky, and ferocious bolt of lightning wreaking havoc in the distance. Just drive 10 minutes and the view from another angle is completely different. Hundreds of miles of trails all over and just outside town too. Anyway, I picked up my PNW box today being held by my neighbor. In mint condition, and I looked at the playing side of every disc. No finger prints, scratches, gouges, or nicks. Listening to my second disc right now, so far so good. Hoping it all runs through that way. Box and packaging is as glorious as promised, and even the wife with her architect's eye was impressed. Excellent sound so far, as many have said. This will undoubtedly be a main cornerstone of my '73-'74 collection, and will get a lot of play. No matter how many times I try (and I have), the '73-74 with all of its clean and polished precision can not quite move me like '68-'72, with its raw and rough energy, emotional peaks, and that undefinable "sound" that to me is the heart and soul of the GOGD. But it comes damn close, and I'm more than grateful for this release. I love the packagings of these box sets - yep, it enhances the experience for me substantially. Oh, and Jimbo - any movie with Gene Hackman and Delroy in it is ok by me. I think Delroy is an Oakland local around here, though I've never seen him out and about. Did see Danny Glover at an Oakland coffee shop midday one time when almost nobody else was around though...

I saw Dylan live for the first time last year. He played Tangled Up and Blue and about five songs form the 60s. With some of them-Desolation Row particularly, I had no idea what song was being played until he started singing, the arrangements were so different. Well worth seeing, though. I like all the last 4 albums he made featuring self penned material. Love and Theft is the one I keep going back to. Amazing that The Orb are doing a 30th anniversary tour-they still seem like modern music to me. They distinguished themselves in my eyes through Steve Hillage's involvement. Incidentally, if anyone out there likes Steve's music, there is an incredible box set of his available called Searching For The Spark. All the great albums, live shows previously unavailable, outtakes, two books, posters-one of them signed, a badge and plectrum. Every home should have one.

So, first box, 9 cds are currently being replaced. Doc and Marye are on it. Ordered a 2nd box, just in case. I ordered on 10/3 with express shipping. Order has been billed to CC. Called, today. Was informed that they are having problem with their supplier and hopefully your order will process soon. I hope I didn't break the system, sorry if I did. One way or another this darkness, got to give.

So far for me its Vancouver '73 Disc 3 that is defective. Decided to contact customer service as I go through the box. Its been a few days and still no word (they say they are backed up). Can someone please provide again the other resources for contacting people? I will reach out to Marye, but can you post Doc's email? Why do we have to reach out to three sources to get help? Where is quality control? My experience with this getting replacement disc(s) for this box will definitly effect whether I decide to purchase the next one.

Looks like site security has been stepped up -- now the I'm not a robot routine includes an additional test in which one selects from very grainy images those that contain a car. Took me several tries! Sedona... ah yes, we took a brand new, pale blue Fleetwood Cadillac four-wheeling through Sedona canyon exactly 40 years ago. The vehicle did not belong to us, thus one needn't worry that it was not a four-wheel drive vehicle... My former comrade in arms, who went by the name of Rollo California, had to be in LA for a wedding and I wanted to visit a friend in Flagstaff. He got a drive-away service to give him the Cadillac, due in LA in three days. I packed sandals and a toothbrush, some Thai, mescaline, quaaludes and a case of Foster's Lager in an icy cooler. We left Denver in the afternoon and by nightfall we were tripping our asses off, and entering the official waystation on Raton Pass into New Mexico. The faces of the officials were swirling blobs, but the night was young and we suppressed our contagious laughter until we could trundle off in the Cadillac again. New Mexico-Arizona border checkpoint for commercial vehicles: "Are you gentlemen carrying any fruit from out of state?" The question puzzled us. Rollo began to say, "We don't have any fruit, but the trunk is loaded with..." And I had to cut him off and say, mechanically, "We have no fruit" and they let us pass. So we find our friends in Flagstaff, including a beautiful young woman currently seeing my Flag friend's older brother. Perfect! He was at work, so the three of us boarded the Caddie and headed off for the day to Sedona. I admit that my overly friendly gestures towards the woman were reciprocated, while Rollo eased the Caddie down dirt roads and across the foot-deep creek in Sedona Canyon to find the perfect spot for a doobie. Found it. Rollo delivered the car in LA, apparently without a hitch, and when he returned several days later, the adventure was just beginning........... [to be continued...] As for DaP 28, unless they're holding other Red Rocks shows for a purpose (likely), the Aug. 12, 1979 show at the Rocks was a crisp rollicking show that would fit 3 discs. The next night, as well, Aug. 13, at McNichols, was a bomb -- my girlfriend at the time and I both took a full tab both nights and blazed with a few thousand of our closest friends. Check the tapes, they do not lie about these two shows. There was a third night, of which my specific memories amount to exactly zero.

So now they have us training the very robot overlords that will one day take our jobs. Huh. And then we’ll have nothing to do but sip pina coladas and listen to dead shows all day. It’s true though. Every time you identify a store-front, or decipher a picture with text on it, you’re feeding info into ai programs that are learning, using millions of examples, how to distinguish a store front from an office building, or helping to catalogue vast tracts of scans of books into the written word. The guy who invented this clever marriage of security and forced labor is probably sipping a pina colada in Mexico and jamming the next Dave’s Pick already, which I humbly predict will be an abcd effort from the summer of ’69. Sorry to hear about all the problems with discs and box damage. I’ve never had a problem in my 7+ years of pavlovian dead.net purchasing. Maybe I’m due for an empty box with a scratched-up lump of coal or something. I’m through 4 of the 6 shows from the PNW box and it just keeps getting better. The upcoming pick is just icing on the cake.

in the grand scheme of things, it matters not a whit but new possible inductees into the Hall still no Motorhead. a travesty, I say. a TRUE R&R band that is shunned. well, I know the truth. there should be a Motorhead _wing_ at the Hall. Hall and Oates...in. but not Motorhead. >:(((

The R&R HOF matters about as much as high fashion but if it doesn't have Motorhead in it it aint no HOF. And while we're at it the omission of Judas Priest is ridiculous. They have been delivering the goods for 50 years and helped lay the groundwork for heavy metal. the problem is these great R&R bands do not fit the Jan Wenner "Artist" profile. Stevie Nicks as a solo artist? Please...

Announced PITB vinyl for Black Friday47 minutes spilt over two sides.

Finally made it through all of my discs and although many of them have large scratch and scuffs only one skipped and after a clean seems ok. I agree the quality control is lacking. I honestly feel my scratched discs should be replaced, I just don't want to go through the process. My GSTL box had several skipping discs as well, but all were replaced. If you buy a new anything, and there is a scratch on it, will one not return said item for an unblemished one? Personally I've been in manufacturing for over 25 years and my customers would pull contracts for reoccurring issues like this. Damage in shipping is a seperate issue. All my discs where secured in their holders so any scratch scuffs happened at point of manufacture/ packaging. But even with that said, we all choose to continually purchase these items knowing about past production issues. I hope everyone gets replacements asap. It just seems like any purchases from here should be treated with a "Caveat emptor" attitude.

Considering that Wenner himself has been inducted, it is indeed a joke!So many inconsistencies, it's laughable: Pete Seeger? Love him, but the guy hated rock and roll. A better choice would have been the great Fred Neil. Robert Johnson, but no Charley Patton. No Moby Grape, but Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone and ABBA are there; all fine artists, but not R'n'R artists. I could go on and on...

HI All- I wrote a while back about my experience in getting discs replaced. I am not going to repeat all of it other than summarizing what I think worked which was I kept up on them. It wasn't real easyas I had to email, wait for response, email again for update etc.. It took a few weeks but it worked out. It seems like some got their replacements faster, and some took longer than me and even some had no luck. It also sounds like there are various routes to take to get replacements. No doubt it's frustrating and stressful to have contend with this, at least it was for me. However I was damn well determined to persevere because I knew then rend result would be great music. Definitely quality control and customer service needs a little overhaul. I have to say that this was my first major issue like this and I somewhat disturbed...mainy for some future purchases. Now I am not really worried about Dave’s Picks but future boxes might be something I possibly hold off on to assess the quality level. I can see boxes that contain multiple shows (essentially many discs) might be prone to more quality issues. Basically there is just items to get screwed up. Then again if the box is from shows I really want, I don't think I will wait long to pull the trigger and buy it- who am I trying to fool? Now here is an interesting tidbit: When I went through this whole quest to get replacement discs it was basically a series of emails for communication/reporting/updating. Yet at one point in the process I did call customer services at Dead.net I knew this would likely be useless but might as well try right? After a short and yet nice conversation with the customer service rep, his basic advice was to email. At the very end he asked me few questions, like how long have liked the Dead, and then he asks what was my favorite show? Well I was calling from work so not only was a taken back by this question, I knew it wasn't an easy answer for me. but I quickly realized I was about to give this customer service rep my personal thesis. Rather than get potentially get written up or fired for a 30 minute stream of consciousness answer, I just blurted out 10/18/72. Now is a show I like that, the I listen too frequently and that is not released. I would certainly be a good one to have in my possession. So I don’t know could it be that this is some type of informal survey being conducted? Maybe the defective discs and non-linear process to get discs replaced are all in an effort to get frustrated customers to call in so that we can give direct input to future releases? I know this sounds like a twisted Willy Wonka golden ticket ploy. Or it could be aliens. In all reality this customer service rep was trying to be kind, but it is fun to ponder the “what if”. Seriously though, I do hope everyone gets their replacement discs because this release is just so good. Anyone who is thinking about giving up don’t. OH and I might as well make Dave’s Picks 28 prediction: yeah 10/18/72. Might as well try right?

Man, thanks for the reminder/tribute!. Entwistle was the finest bassist I ever saw live. I would put him against the great Jack Bruce, but, alas, I never saw Jack. I did see John Paul Jones. Another hero. Gene Simmons' bass lines are vastly underrated. He got a lot from McCartney, who stole James Jamerson. It just keeps on going. Sting and Adam Clayton are also awesome, as is Roger Glover. Quit bitching about your goddamn product malfunctions. Nobody cares, especially me - this forum is for pure entertainment. Address your concerns to the appropriate parties, the Dr, Marye, etc. The rest of the field remain powerless to help you as we are not staffing the Rhino warehouse. I have never had a shit experience purchasing product here. Sorry. If I did, I can't imagine it would enrich the forum or anyone's day to detail it here... I sent my request through the link in the confirmation email yesterday in regards to multiple cd issues with this release. Received response today that replacements are on the way.The cds are really thin cheap, need better quality control.... That said I don't buy all these releases mostly due I think they're total overkill, just give us the music. These shows should've been released individually cd/download. They typically listen to us I'm for less to no giant boxes but more individual non subscription, no limited edition, no dave's logo taking up space (not hating on dave), no horrible skeleton 'art', plain bootleg type releases. everyone gets so blinded by a little card with a number on it that they think gives these releases some additional worth. give us more releases from different years , maybe 5-7 a year with no promises no bonus disc you want it you buy it...I just think the subscription limited big box thing just needs to be mixed up a bit. and cool on judas priest and motorhead and this 73-74....dig

Random distraction.. Against my usually correct instincts.. I got pulled into a pre-order for tickets the day I got my tax refund this last spring.. and scored two tickets to see Steely Dan in a quant vaudeville theatre in Pittsburg last night. I had this strange feeling that it just wouldn't be the same after the passing of Walter Becker.. but I pulled the trigger nonetheless. Had a great time.. they still have it. The last time I saw them, it was a 13 piece band with three backup singers, two guitarists (including Becker) and a four piece brass ensemble. This time, a 12 piece.. more or less the same but just one guitarist. It was bittersweet in that regard, I guess some cannot simply be replaced. (Did you feel like Jesus?) Did you realize That you were a champion in their eyes? Ending on a good note, they still have it.. and the tickets I scored (at non-scalper prices no less) were front row, stage left. There was a gap in the apparatus and we happened to be right where Fagan glanced when he was in thought and moving his head out of the light. Careful what you carry Cause the man is wise You are still an outlaw in their eyes I wouldn't say they were as good as the last time I saw them.. almost.. but it gets the five star approval rating. The sound in this tiny theatre was excellent and the boys were jamming with spirit. RIP Walter Becker. In my opinion this is a top 3 release. Yes it has it's wort's, but we know that from the Charlie Miller recordings. I remember in 73 as a freshman in college listening to my first bootleg (04/69 Avalon ballroom tape an old head at college had) and what we are getting now is an amazingly improved 2nd chance. So enjoy it and follow Bobby's and John Perry's advice and "listen to the music play" I had to return 3 disks, and it was no drama. Sent e-mail to Dr Rhino, he responded in a few days indicating that they were extremely busy but would get the replacements out ASAP. I took 3-4 weeks, but they arrived a few days ago. All is well maybe not? Up early this morning watching Michael develop and wondering should I stay or should I go. Now it appears stay is the option. Right now he's just a few hours due south. Waiting and hoping for the turn to the east to put us on the west side. either way this is gonna be bad for some people. Got the Lexan on the window's and door's and back up 22kw generator is ready. Might be a good day to listen to some 69'dead. Could it be Dave's 28? Kevin out
