Not a very memorable show, I liked the 83 show there a little better. Chill venue though.. we had a good time. I think between the bunch of us we could not put the setlist together after the show. Perhaps this shows our state of mind...

Merriweather was a few days away and they were much better shows which unfortunately let this one slip from memory into the ravages of time.

1984: I’ve made up to Summer tour, which starting on I’m on today, starting with my 40th anniversary of my first time seeing the boys in a foreign country lol.
Really, in those pre 911 days, for us locals it was more like going to the next county, or state. 6/21/84, complete with THE Band opening, Wavy Gravy, and Kesey was a blast and definitely a good show, but not RJ.
So my buddy Tree drove us in his lil Bug and we both dropped at the exact international point on the bridge
(hey if they gave us one of the occasional quick search’s we had nothing in our possession, with plenty of good black hash etc at the show, and we’d be back on the road before things started getting weird)
so a few hours later, by the time we got there things were definitely getting interesting! I always mix this one up with 87 as our mo etc was very similar.
But for those who don’t know, the venue was within Canadas Wonderland amusement park. So having to enter in the middle of FAMILIES!!!, ya know, normal people and children! And, all while being in the middle of what seemed like we were in the middle of the real life Flintstones as everything seemed like some kind of Disney land plastic stone prehistoric village lol. I distinctly recall LMAO after getting in and over the fear, thinking, I’m in a Flintstones episode lol. Hey, the fear was real man ; )
I’m Onto 6/23 as I type, betting Jim was there? Started out kinda ruff but creeping into it, it’s picking up nicely.
Won’t rehash all of 84 as I’ve previously posted, except just to say similar better overall than expected, with plenty of good ones in April, and the Rocks, especially 6/13, perhaps one of the years best?
Ok, going native again, sorry for the intrusion, hopefully somebody gets something outta it lol.
ONWARD! And back to your regularly scheduled POTD!

So half way through the year, which I’ve been focusing on shows I haven’t heard from,
    Primary: 84 and 94, and
    Secondary: 69, 79, and 89

So 69 I’m up to November (all the SBs, not many AUDs), 79 I’ve hit all but 1 or 2?, and 89 I’ve only December left, but I need to revisit August in sequence.
Summer 94 has been a very pleasant surprise! I’m finding the dreaded later years aren’t so bad removed from set and setting situations etc of seeing shows then, as well as being able to finally get better aquatinted with the newer material, which doesn’t bother me near as much, though that chorus on Long Way Home will probably always be annoying lol. Also, three decades has allowed me to catch up with the “industrial” sound lol.
Though I wouldn’t say anything really was RJ, the consistency etc was much better than I expected. I should mention, I’ve done summer tour complete and just a few miscellaneous, including finally hitting the very fine Boxilla show on 10/1. From what I’ve heard so far I think Dave went to the right house for this one, though the Palace shows, some of Deer Creek, say first or second night of Shoreline, really every stop had at least one show, with most at least decent/good. Only recall third night of Shoreline was sub par with Jer having some vocal flubs. Perhaps the best I heard was from 6/17/94 even though it was an Aud. Think Bluecrow suggested this back aways?
    Awesome rave spaces throughout!
So if your not a feared and have an open mind, I think there’s some enjoyable shows. They make a great palate cleanse, especially when/if gettin burned out on certain songs etc! And, though the occasional mellowness would of turned me off BITD, now in my sixties, gulp, I find these a nice alternative similar in that sense to 76.

One could most def argue for a spring box, but I still think the first six shows of the year are the hidden jewel…summer, meh, has big hype shows, but imho the music isn’t as good as the rest of the year, good but…and the fall/winter, sigh…Top Shelf where mama hides the cookies! Or RJ

I’ve hit 6/5/80 also on my quest, or fools errand? Lol. I definitely dug it, but perhaps a half step behind the previous from the land of Vikings and Deadvikes !

But, I’m here more to cannonball into the middle of your nice enjoyable flow to report from the wild weird west and Wonderland too.
Apologies for my side show Bob shit show side trips, but hey, maybe there’s some freak out there who’ll get something outta my frontier adventures?

Spring 73 has to be on their radar. If they can fit it on three discs all the better. I always liked Philly and Baltimore about the same so one would think it's on the release radar.

So how about 6/5/80 next? I had never listened to it before and it's got a surprise or two. Plus it's mere mention got me in trouble with Bolo (again). Clearly there's something hidden in the music that the Mullah's do not want us to enjoy.

Edit: Looks like there's only a soundboard for the second set. Surprise arrangement for the China Rider opener. There is a special place for shows where both sets do not exist, I have to think there's release potential for some or most of these.

    Baltimore! What a show Jim.
Really good recording. First set is sort of the standard for March 73. The El Paso, China Rider stood out to me with Jerry's guitar work and then the Playing to close the first set. Really good.
Second set is a monster. The He's Gone Truckin, WRS prelude which had a great Jerry Jam, into Eyes is so good. Very relaxing. Oh and finish it up with a Morning Dew and OMSN.
    Loved it. Good call Jim.

This show should be released at some point you would think.

Where Is The Ark?

I thought we'd settled that.

The Ark is somewhere very safe.

From Whom?

The Ark is a source of unspeakable power and it has to be researched.

And it will be I assure you Dr. Broady, Dr. Jones.

Bureaucratic fools, they don't know what they've got there.

10/15/76 Set II Is really strong, Eyes of the World>Music Never Stopped start set II, and an ending stretch of The Other One>Comes A Time>Franklin's Tower>Sugar Magnolia... One caveat is the board ends during Comes A Time, but the audience is Betrando!!! 4 days after Oakland shows... bob t

Hey Pocky Way through My Brother Esau are included as bonus footage on View from the Vault III. Great stuff.

Bird Song is hot. Maggie's Farm Cumberland, oh yeah! Stella Blue is moving. Quinn the Eskimo finish, yes!

Can anybody explain what an ultra matrix recording is? I am familiar matrix recordings (Dave's #8).

Time to do some more research on 87. A lot to offer. Don't think we will ever see an 87 Dave's Picks release, but man, it would be cool.

DEADVIKES - Lots to see & hear in 1987.
The ULTRAMATRIX are essentially matrix tapes that Dan Healy made. Healy would record the crowd / ambience and blend that in with the SBD feed to create a more live sound. He was experimenting with it for awhile, but 1987 seems to be when he focused (exclusively?) on it, could be wrong on that. So most of the Tapes from the time period he was doing this, sound like a matrix tape with audience noise (sometimes way too much) and are called ULTRAMATRIX or ULTRAMIX.

The Spring Tour of '87 unfortunately, appears to be when Healy was figuring out how much of this ambience he wanted on the tape, and IMO those tapes tend to have too much ambience making them sound more like an Audience recording than the '85 crystal clear SBDs we'd come accustom to.

I was super stoked after Spring '87 shows to get the tapes, I wanted a dope SBD of those shows so I could see if what I thought I saw was amazing as I felt it was. So I waited and waited and waited. Never could find one, instead I had what sounded like a pretty good audience tape. Turns out it was a muddy transfer of Healy's ULTRAMATRIX recordings and the crystal clear SBD never appeared. In 2017-2019 Charlie Miller started to post some Upgrades of the ULTRAMATRIX cassette masters from I believe Joani Walker. Hopefully there's some even better transfers brewing in the Don Pearson stash that have been trickling out, I guess we'll see.

Some love em, some hate em.. yada yada. I'm still curious about whether or not in cases where what circulates is an UltraMatrix if there is also a "clean" SBD tape as well in the Vault. It would appear that the answer would be "sometimes". For example 3/26/87 what circulates is the Healy ULTRAMATRIX but there appears to also be a straight SBD of this show, which Dave L. played on Taper's Section (BTW it was DL's first show & a Charlie Miller Fave and worth checking out!). I'd love to find out that the Vault has "clean" SBDs of all these shows in addition to the ULTRAMATRIX that circulate, but I think that's probably not the case, or we'd have heard more. It's possible though, and it's probably more of a case of they have some but not all. I guess time will tell if we live long enough.

I've been trying to find out since '87 so yeah, don't hold your breath.

Fun to watch yesterdays show as well as listen to it.
Watched VFTV III for the first part of Set 1 & YouTube for the rest.

I'd say it's a good show, but not great.
They lost me with the 2nd set LLR and for me it felt pretty routine after that.

Much better stuff earlier in the year ;)

It might've also been that I'd listened to 8/3/02 The Other Ones for the first time earlier in the day.
That was pretty far out!

It makes you think what could've been..

Speaking of LLR, 6/21/85 is playing over here and we've got a Set 1 LLR > Day Job closer. Uhh...

Fortunately I know that Estimated is a smoker, can't really remember the rest, and therefore I will relisten.

BTW any ideas on that there BOLO Contest?

Minus the plagiarized lines from Raiders, I've got nothing.

Have A Grate Day!

Nice show Deadvikes. Nothing mind blowing but a good solid 87 outing. Always enjoy Pocky Way, and Candyman too. We got an Esau in there which some don’t get, but I always liked it because it was an unusual song and a change of pace. Bird Song and TMNS to round out the first. Loved the Maggie’s>>Cumberland. Don’t think I’ve heard that combo? Don’t think I’ve heard them do Maggie’s with just JG and Bob either? I’m Used to the big 4 vocal versions post Brent. So yeah their taking it higher untiiilllll ittttt comesss backkk downnnn with LL Rain, meh,... nice solid Terrapin with JG steady and confident, not a sizzler but we’ll played. Yes after that it’s sort status quo time to bring it home, but enjoyed Stella, and Quinn is a nice alternative to the more usual encores. All in all I nice little show.
As far as Ultramatrix, some seem a little dull sounding to me, some too metally, or I guess that could just as well be the metal tape?, but for this show the one I listened to I thought was really good. Personally I’ll take a good matrix over a SB any day, cause sorry folks but a dry SB feed is not what it sounded like live! To me some of the old stuff folks go on about I think are hard to listen to, especially the vocals and often the bass.
But of course compared to most Audi’s back then the SBs are a step up, and though I’m a audiophile, I’ll take a hot show via a lesser recording than a perfectly sounding dud, but that’s just me. I guess I’ve never really been a “taper” and I don’t mean necessarily someone who actually tapes. To me it’s always been sort of a click, a club, a cultural thing. And I think their mentality has sometimes biased things in a limiting way, again, that’s just me. I love Dave, and think he does a great job, but he suffers from this bias too. Sorry, not trying to be negative and didn’t mean to ramble, just say I prefer a good matrix. Although nothing beats a multitrack from most any era!
I wonder if ULTRAMATRIX is named somehow due to the Dead/Ultra Sound relationship. Don Pearson was I believe the Meyers Ultra Sound representative with the Dead who worked closely with Healy to tweak the system etc. So I’m curious if these new Pearson matrix’s we’ve been seeing are ones he perhaps took care of some of the tape mix while Dan did his thing, or are they separate some how from Healys normal feed/mix? Definitely would love to know more about all this!
Ok, Summers here and the time is right for some 85 Dancin’ in the streets! Woo-hoo, of to Alpine!

EDIT: I think maybe y’all’s reading into Bolos post too much...sounds like he’s trying to Huck Finn your asses to come clean out his garage 😉

Shit, I'll clean a garage if there's a shirtless Jerry having fun at a Who show picture in it.

So you think this contest is all a hoax? a put on? a trick?

Who's in Charge Here!?!?!

To flash back on those UltraMatrix. I'm not sure about Pearson's mixes being any different than what we already have. But I've been comparing the new Pearson sources that Charlie has been putting out to the UltraMatrix source we had before, and from what I can tell the source / mix is the same but the difference is in the transfer. The new transfers are way better for the most part. I think Charlie has better gear, more knowledge, etc. So the new transfers tend to sound better. That's all speculation. Charlie what do you say? And You ROCK! I might be a tape geek. Never a taper, but always a collector.

And lastly 6/21/85 is probably the weakest show in this summer run.. they give it a go, but the x factor isn't there. It'll be interesting to hear what you all think. But that's what I got again from hearing it this AM.

But it's coming... if I remember right, it's there tomorrow. Loved that tape back in the day. Looking forward to hearing it again.

Be Well All You Heads!

I think my favorites of the PNW box were the 74 shows (surprise).. but on the reslistens there are a few shows from this box that are better played as partials and not the whole show experience. ..but to confirm, I am squarely in the release the full show corner.

Be well folks!

And 6/22/73 was a treat had to finish up this morning. Really dig the Playing in the Band, HCS. Black Peter is hot and He's Gone, Trucking. Great finish and great choice.

Hell's Yeah.

Yesterday's revisit was indeed a trip.. 6/22/73 is a big show, full of songs, lotsa songs. But yes like you're saying DEADVIKES the biggies are what resonated with me: Bird Song (14:29), PITB (18:55), HCS (12:25), 1 of 5 Black Peter's from '73 and the first one of the year, and then the huge jam of He's Gone > Truckin' > The Other One > Wharf Rat (60 plus minutes). Those are only the jams.. who does that?!?! Deep deep dive if you take it.

Followed it up with the Anniversary revisit of 6/22/85 at Alpine Valley. Love that show, the 2nd set is seared into my memory from the teenage tape days, you can hear the band having fun between songs figuring out what's next during Set 1. Not sure it's a perfect show or anything, but I'm super fond of it and would highly recommend checking it out for all you '85 heads. What'dya think OROBOROUS?

Alright, so you're thinking May 15-16 1980 huh?

Any chance you'd be interested in checking out a couple of Miller upgrades that just popped up instead??

There's 2/15/73 or 7/18/76 I'm jonesing to check out.

Not a lot of time again today so;
6/21&22/85: good shows. Though 6/21 is good especially for a tour opener, and I think I like post drums set list better,
I think Overall I prefer 6/22. I think they were more settled and bringing it. Nice Rockin’ first set with OMSN as an exclamation point. Only to be one upped by a great Keep on Growing/Half step, and nice Sailor/Saint, Liked the Mr Fantasy before Miracle outta drums instead of other way around. Great Stella and solid, but usual ending. Hoping I’ll have time for the awesome 6/24/85 Riverbend show tonight? Actually working a few days for first time since 3/18. Usually I’d catch up here, but I wan to get done and outta here...
So probably won’t get to 7/18/76 which is a shame because it’s such a good show.(Prolly spin it up on 7/18), so I won’t pontificate on it as I covered it a bit here a few pages ago. But yeah, one of my first tapes from my early days and a all time favorite.
Really love the quick, tight segways, especially during LIG etc, and the mini drum breaks etc, awesome show!
Speaking of old/awesome early tapes, yesterday was the 40 anniversary of High School Graduation which is a good story. So do all the usual BS and it’s getting into late afternoon, the relatives are all out back for a family cook out/celebration etc, but no Pedro?...where the @#$&*$ is he?....why I’m in my room taping King Biscuit floor hour from the below mentioned Nassau shows, serendipity baby! So yeah, all my relatives are out back while I’m taping the Dead, lol. Forty years ago, yee-gads....ok, back to work. Play Dead and if you haven’t heard this show yet your in for a real treat!

The King Biscuit Flour Hour, I just read something about how I believe that got started because of live Grateful Dead broadcasts and it might've been the 7/18/76 show that was the catalyst, don't quote me on that. But yeah.. serendipity.

I knew that 7/18/76 had been mentioned recently just couldn't remember who had mentioned it without scrolling through this here forum, so it's nice to have the confirmation that it was OROBOROUS who speaks so highly of that show. Which is indeed fantastic!

However, the recordings we have are pretty uneven in sound quality, so if the powers that be have a nice sweet recording of that show hiding in the Vault, let's get that puppy dusted off and shined up and pushed out to all the adoring fans and Let It Shine, Let It Shine, Let It Shine.

Set 2 is amazing, the final night of the triumphant hometown return of the Dead. Cool backstory on the Orpheum theater and why the Dead played there floating around on this here interweb, I'm too lazy to grab the link, but if somebody starts jonesing for that, lmk and Thanks for indulging me on that one, I needed to hear it and have done.

Alright, May 1980 Go To Nassau Coliseum, I will listen.

And happy Anniversary 6/24/85 Riverbend Coliseum, oh how I wish I would've started to see shows one year earlier, cause you would've been the one! But alas I was too young and inexperienced and probably would've freaked out.. I could barely handle it a year later. Fun to think about anyway.

Turn It On And Leave It On.

Ha.. so true Oroborous. As much as possible, I made it a point to tape the New Years Shows, The Grateful Dead Hour, anything where they were transmitting boards through the FM.

I have the 80 Nassau King Biscuit on tape still, but haven't listened to it since the 80's. After the Archive came out I gave up on my tapes. I never went back and researched what show it is, to this day I thought it was late 79.. go figure.

One new years a friend had a party and I dragged my Nakamichi along to make a good tape. I can totally relate to that story..

Solid show GOGD. Hard to believe how different they sound from July 76 versus June.
Could not find a Miller on Relisten but did find a good SBD. Sound quality isn't perfect still good. Solid B+.
Love the feel of this show, Half Step, Scarlet, hot stuff. Love the Let it Grow montage. St. Stephen! Almost feels like a 77 show and the Stella Blue is awesome.

Yeah I still have that tape. (Have all my tapes) I like to edit for fun so I broke it out a few years ago as I was trying to figure out what shows etc so I could hopefully splice together with the Go to Nassau etc. Can’t remember the details but I never finished it so must of been some issue? But back In the those old days it was crazy what we’d do for a chance at another unheard show. Some things never change!
7/18/76: actually able to sneak this one in if only on an iPad....replacing a network at a house. No one has been here in a while. Told the boss only way I’m working is in a house no ones in or been in recently, which is currently hard to find since half of Texas is here getting the locals sick. But I left the old modem and router, and 1 WAP up so I can listen while I work, which is nice. Forgot how mellow this show is, in a good way, and of course that second set is a real Bobbie Dazzler!
Hopefully I can get Riverbend in tonight, but man this working shit is harder then I remember lol. I was getting used to being “retired” 😎.

Missed this one, but I bet the Day Tripper opener blew some minds. What a crisp board too, good recording for '85. It started circulating in high quality almost immediately, I know I had it early on. I have great memories of listening to this show.

Had a good time with this release. Sound quality is A+ and it still sounds really good almost 20 years later. The Franklins Tower is really good. Nice Lazy Lighting Supply. China Rider! I am always a sucker for Lost Sailor-SOC. Playing UJB! I love 1980!

So 6/25/85 for today? I will check it out

The famous "pop" is still in the new Charlie Miller 2/15/73 Dane County Coliseum Dark Dark star... i have no idea why my post looks like it does... Good Old Grateful dead posted about this upgrade a few days ago... Good pick of the day for today... bob t

Bob T it's good to see that you're still coloring outside the lines..
You non-conformist you!
Well done.

I'm hip to what you're laying down and it's in my pile of stuff to listen to, so 2/15/73 you say?

Did notice some static in Loose Lucy that's not on the Menke version, so I'm curious what's going on with this new Source / Upgrade. Sounds like you're on your way, keep your reporters hat on, deadline is at 4:30pm PST so we can get it to press before Shakedown Stream.

Deadvikes - Good call on Go To Nassau, those are some hot shows! Isn't that the Althea that Al Franken was saying is his favorite? It's a damn good one. Nice compilation by Dave L, would love for the full shows to be released. I wonder how many times those two statement occur together?!?!? hahaha. I'm curious about the source of the tapes they used on that, I believe what I have for the full show is a Betty Board, I wonder what source they used from the Vault. So many questions but sounds like different mixes.

DL let's catch up soon so I can ask you about all this stuff, miss you bro, and what's the next Dave's Pick?!?!
I'm calling Pigpen Era or Brent Era, we've had our two Donna & Keith Era for the year.
Hoping for Pigpen Era.

Don't give up Hope ;)

Coffee is working, might have to get stuff done. I had a lot to discuss this week in regards to what I've heard, but was too lazy or depressed to type it out, this global pandemic and America's flailing about without proper leadership is bumming me out.

So I took some music as medicine and Blossom '85 yesterday was really a good trip, Jerry's voice is shot, but the band is really catching fire as the tour progresses. I've always loved that show it's like an old friend. Also read some cool stuff about this band and it's community that was real interesting.

Another day I find myself alive..

Have a Grate Day!

I can't keep up with you die-hard Heads and listen to a show a day, but I do pop in here to read your wizard thoughts and observations. Fear not for July 18th, 1976! I distinctly remember Dave mentioning that that show exists in The Vault [angelic chorus suddenly bursts forth with, "AHHHHHHH!!!!"] in multi-track, and that he would get that show out one day. This comment was made when he was discussing the release of Dap18, which is 7/16-17/76.

Good to see you Deadheadbrewer! I have heard that as well that the show exists in Multi Track! Look forward to that.

6/25/85. Fun start with Day Tripper. 85, definitely not Jerry's high water mark. Must have been hard for the band, when your engine is failing. You can hear the continued deterioration. I saw it live in 86 just two weeks before the coma. Thank God for his recovery.

Be well folks and everybody hang loose.
Looking forward to 10/2/87 tonight.

We need a Pick. Otis? Jimbo?

Send us a pick.

Watched a portion of the 10/2/87 show last night. Man, they were on fire for those Shoreline shows in October of 87. I will wait the rest tonight.

Who made it to those shows?

We don't want you falling on somebody else, you do what yourself what you want man..

Another classic from summer '85?

Great Pick Yesterday Bob T!
Pick was sublime, February '73 is some of my favorite Dead, just love it.
Love the "pop" / sonic squawk in Dark Star and you're right it wouldn't be the same without it, but I'm pretty sure that puppy is baked in and went out to all that day over the PA.

2/9/73 & 2/15/73 really should get the release treatment, but then we have these great recordings of them already, and there's soooo much stuff that we might not have.

Fun to think about.
Any calls on when we'll get that Next Pick announcement?
Is the excitement building?

So many questions.

Fun to think about.

6/27/85 is getting a spin over here as we speak.

And remember.. Don't Hang Off The Balcony!
