EDIT: boggles my mind why they wouldn’t drop 7/2/89 since they did something ? to it for MUATM? Deer Creeks awight, but I wouldn’t rush on it.

Nice work OB. Yes, I enjoyed this show as well. Not your uncle's Franklin's, but still good. Good Jack a Row. Nice Foolish Heart second set opener, good Playing UJB. I was surprised to hear the Iko Iko out of Space and I thought who else is singing here. Oh yes, the Nevilles came out after Space. Totally forgot about this. Good Watchtower, which I really liked in the late 80s. We get a great Dew, Sugar Mag, KOHD.

I think we have all the July 89 shows released with the exception of the Alpine shows, Deer Creek and Foxoboro. Let's get those out.

I will check out those 79 audience recordings OB.

I'm not sure if there's a better to place to put this - and I've been ludicrously busy at work all month, so maybe this has already been discussed elsewhere - but is there a thread or discussion of Dave's recent 'Spend a Little Time on the Mountain with Dave Lemieux' YT video?

"And then I won't give anything away, but #51, I've been working very closely with Jeffrey Norman the last few weeks on #51... of course it's a complete show... there was a little bit of extra room, and we are rounding it out with music from a show that we released awhile ago... a couple picks ago... that wasn't complete because there wasn't room. [...] So if you want to finish off another complete show that was part of the Dave's Picks series, I won't tell you what show it was, what pick it was, no hints... but it will complete that show as well."

So surely that must be the rest of 10/24/70 St. Louis. But, does that imply we're going to get a Pigpen (and perhaps T.C.) release for Volume 51!?! I'd love to think so, esp after Dave all but said Vol 51 won't be a Keith nor a Brent era show. But I guess the presence of some 1970 filler doesn't guarantee that the 'main entree' will be from a similar year; after all, Dave's Vol 44 is a 1990 show that has that Cold Rain & Snow filler from December 1969...

I'm really partial to that Shea's show! I think there are several factors in play for me, including it being an early tape in my collection (I only had set II) of a really good audience recording. I enjoyed the timbre, the feel of the room. I know today it looks like a standard set list if you discount the DS but back then I didn't know differently. And I was really familiar with 12/31/78, so this night just felt on a continuum since I didn't know anything about band internal dynamics etc. Oroborous' review (thank you for typing that all up!!) was lovely to read. This afternoon I have been listening to 1/7/78 - one of the laryngitis shows in San Diego, and the night before the 'Uncle Bobo' show - but afterwards I think it's time to jump ahead a year to this night in Buffalo.

Bolo - I'll be there. Sorry to hear of your brother's passing. Always a funny feeling when memory carved in stone is suddenly shown to be misremembered. Hopefully the rest of the show is in the vault. If so, maybe Dave L. can lay it on us in the tapers section or jam of the week (hint hint). very nice that what we have of Set I includes that 20 minute Playing :)

Lol, our first time to Hampton we thought we were going to spring break.
As northerners, we assumed it would be beach weather down there and were quite disappointed when we went to the beach and it was cold, windy, and not a bikini in sight.
Did score my one and only Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic at a head shop there, so all was not lost.

4/9 was hot, did 4/20 yesterday as I wasn’t in the mood for another partial old tape.
Interesting set list and another good spring 83 show.
Today we’ll go for 12/10/72. Unfortunately back at work so not the best listening conditions, but the dead’s always been good for helping the work get done!

12/10/72👍. Wish we had the whole the show.

Tomorrow's pick. I would like to offer up 9/1/79. Great recording is available. The show starts with Half Step and the recording starts out rough but evens out mid way through and stays great throughout the rest of the show.

Pretty sweet show is right.. you get more than an hour and a half and it starts with Bertha.. almost like a mini-show in itself even though it's a partial.

Great listen yesterday..

Something seems funky at dead.net, a change in the interface? Anyone else noticing this? A phenomenon that often predates high-profile box set announcements..?

I don't recall if it was this 12/10 show or one of the 1973 concerts, but I do remember leaving Winterland after a sizzling show, pausing at the door to peek outside and make sure I was still in San Francisco. Or on Earth, for that matter.

Those Winterland shows were usually really special.

Yes,what the hell is going on with this site? Seems all messed up. 79, yes Oroborous, the lost years are high on my list 79, 80, and 81. You almost went to this show? No way. You for sure need to check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Great show.. high energy and a little something extra. Thanks man.. re-hitting some of the parts where distractions pulled me away now.

Liked the interesting Saint with not yet worked out lyrics etc, a little tentative by the band..Nice S/F, cool space, excellent Rat, fun Bertha with first hand accounts describing the sun going down just as JG sang that line...
Damn, I wish I could of gone, but I was still young and the rents were not there yet and the thought of going “all the way to Rochester” GASP! (An hour and a half at the time)
That would have to wait a year.
Probably didn’t help that the folks I would have gone with were all like 5 years older and full on freaks, some had been busted with over hyped headlines in the local paper (it was all BS and nobody ever got in any real trouble).
I remember they thought the show was just ok, and told of how the Good Rats were a terrible opener and how the crowd was throwing their toy Rats back at them along with other things and literally booed then off lol.
Aw well, missed it by that much 🤌

Good pick, glad I finally got to hear it!

It's hot as balls here, it was a water day.. and from a cold mountain stream with water temps it the 50's. Going to cut the grass though and plan to revisit '79.

Hope you all are having a great weekend. Nice 72 show on SiriusXM today (9/10/72 Hollywood Palladium).. I caught parts of the second set on the drive. Nice Dark Star > Jack Straw. That would be a nice one to hit one day.

Edit: Redit the highlights of 9/1/79. Very nice.. Jerry could still sing in '79, songs I do not normally gel to stand out, like FOTD and others. Lot's of emotion, especially from Jerry. Goes to show, you cannot judge a show by the setlist. One minor issue with the 79 forward recordings.. they either did not mic the drums well or the cassette masters flattened their tone. It is a really good recording but in the first set, sometimes the drums sound like popcorn makers. Again, no drawback from the performance.. but man I wish all the recordings were betty boards.

One last shout-out to '79..I believe Otis gets the 79 vibe.

As you were.. have a great rest of the weekend.

I am having a tough time this weekend with this site. Hard to even read what I am trying to type. What happened to this site? So maybe they have a Betty Board in the vault of this show? Yes, the recordings are never perfect. Really also like the Franklins from 79 and this show. Love the Bob Weir intro into the second set. So good. Oroborous, these guys had so much material to work with after Go to Heaven. It was a great time to get your start. I can't imagine. Would love to see more 79 officially released. 8/31/79 is also worth a listen if you care to continue on with 79.

Did 4/23 & 25/83 at work last couple days.
4/23 was good but lost me at the end.
Candyman AND a Peggy O, hell I really liked the whole first set, second was kinda standard fare...
4/25/83: ok show, didn’t resonate as well as the New Havens, especially that 4/22 show. So far I think I’d give the nod to the Providence show on 4/20 as far as the post Meadowlands shows?
Just 4/26/83 to go and I’ll have heard everyone on this tour in some form or another, though I didn’t do the whole everyone in order method...

Well, was hoping to fire up the beast and blast something good sounding, but my server may have issues, not cool Kyle, not cool!
Guess I’ll have to stream some more shows or maybe I’ll break out some vinyl?
So 8/31/79,10/9/72, and 4/26/83 are on the radar...did we do 10/9/72? It seems familiar...if GOGD hadn’t gone and flown the coop we’d know ; )

Yeah Jim, it’s your season eh?
How’s the runoff this year? I believe you said you had a wet spring so should be good...
Get your paddle on and git sum amigo!

Working a +40 in four days after not working for six months was brutal, I’m told old for this shit lol. Gonna lounge to the max, lick my wounds, and nail a retred to my feet.... oh yeah, and hopefully watch the AVs win ; ) (sorry vguy)

Sounds good. I have a lot to do.

Having some fun with a house renovation in progress.. got some local, rough cut Cherry a couple years ago and recently milled it into some really incredible looking trim for the upstairs bathroom and kitchen (windows, shower, baseboard, etc.). Just completed the finish and some of the figuring on the boards looks almost tie dyed.. electric. Listening to good ole GD only seems fitting while I plow through the tedious finishing process..... a little buzz and 1979 GD really helps.. and I can't help but think the good ole GD shows up in the end product.

Been putting this off for years, covid finally freed up some time to get it done.

btw, 9/1 was a great recording for the era, good pick dvikes. The drum tones sometimes makes me wish they kept up the dedicated recording resources instead of piggy-backing on the PA and pumping that sound into a cassette deck. I still love them, first world problems I know.

This show has garnered multiple listens from me. Rarer set II Let it Grow. Interesting take on Minglewood from what I remember. Inspired choice, good job guys. So how about 10-14-76 to 10-15-76, a la 9-1-79 to 9-2? Just a thought. Happy Tuesday all...

P.S. Nice to see things back to it's normal weird. :-)

Alright WTJ, looks like we have a pick for today and the full show is available. Thanks!

Jim, you must be extremely handy if you are milling your own wood. Wow!
Do you have a Workingman's Dead axe for that project?

I believe Betty was still recording shows in 1979. Not sure if there are official copies of these shows in the
VAULT.

We haven't had a box announcement for 16 months. The question is will we have Dave's #39 before the next box is announced?

Might get some serious listening time today though, anything else on tap just in case?

I have two tricks up my sleeve.. the sister show to 3/24/73, Dave's Picks 32 two nights later in Baltimore. I always thought these two shows were partners in crime as Philly is to Baltimore in general. Another we could hit is 1/17/68, the first DS>China Cat>11 sequence.
https://archive.org/details/gd1968-01-17.sbd.cotsman.11795.shnf

Two random picks from the past that don't get too much discussion. For now, setting the wayback to 10/15/76.

Baltimore won't disappoint.

Interesting tidbit.. yesterday the property and business owners in one of the cooler hangs in btown sued the state for neglecting their responsibility to cut crime, gang violence and keeping general misfits out of one of the more eclectic business/bar/restaurant blocks in the city. Actually, they did not sue they just said FU to paying taxes for services that are lackluster.

I don't agree or disagree, their point being their businesses have been increasingly isolated from the rest of the city by some crime infested areas.. such that it is not very safe to walk freely between other parts of the city and Fells Point.

It's a classic part of the city though,, for example, there's only one place to get Bertha's Mussels. Best in the city since 1972. Ever seen the bumper sticker that read, Eat Bertha's Mussels? Bertha don't you come around here anymore....

I have a sneaking suspicion not paying taxes will not furtur their argument.. but hey, don't let me drown out the party.

This working shit sucks! Lol
I knew coming outta “retirement” was going to be hard, but phew, pant, pant, pant, this is more work than chasing squirrels! So not only too busy to hang with y’all, but I’ve been stuck actually having to work with people, instead of my usual solo, which means no tunes! Uuuugghhhh!
And my servers @#$&(6&& and I don’t have time to take it to its maker 3 hours away....
Hopefully I can listen to this and dat this WE?

Funny B town story, think in that section your speaking of Jimbo.
I was doing merch with my ole buddy LaRoush. Big Head Todd opening for Ziggy and the Melody Makers at what ever that cool amphitheater is that sticks out into the harbor. At the time (mid nighties) we’d been told things were better, but to be cautious late at night. So my number one rule was when it’s time to leave with the cash, be together, don’t dawdle, and get the fug out...so after a count out/pay out in some dark creepy basement with cigar smoking mob like characters totally giving me the fear, I wanted out ASAP, but of course no LaRoush to be found, Dooah!
I venture out to the truck, but he’s not there? So here I am with a large stash of cash in my briefcase, and another nights worth in the truck, and no damn LaRoush? Fuuuuuudddgggeee, only I didn’t say fudge!
Finally after searching high and low, there he is backstage knawing on what’s left of catering because he got too stoned with Ziggys crew guys and now at 2AM has uncontrollable munchies lol.
I shoulda left him there like they used to leave Bobby at rest areas etc.
Only time I had the fear worse doing merch was in Detroit but that’s another story...

I’m not as think as you stoned I am.

I hear you man. Hang in there...

Keep the mother rolling one more time.. like from the Here Comes Sunshine near the beginning of the second set, 3/26/73 Baltimore Civic Center? ..and how about that 8 minute Weather Report Suite Prelude into Wharf Rat?

This show seems on par and well matched to DaP 32. Releasable? yes.

Yeah, that whole second set sequence was sweet, especially that WRS jam!

Perhaps better than that DaP 38 fiasco...
Agree, this would make a good Dave’s.
Might go 4/26/83 next to finish off that tour and change it up.
DP 11 will make a nice Sunday afternoon session. Perhaps some Cheeebas are in order, those DS’ demand it lol.
Onward!

EDIT: make that 4/26/83 ooopps, worth checking out. Hot Shakedown once it gets rolling, LIG, H-S-F, hot Women are, cool jam into Truckin’, nobody’s jam out into Dew etc.

Tasty.

This is one of those shows that I did not immediately get. I was just too busy to get sucked into that second set.

Times have changed and subsequent listens unlocked the mysteries.. that Dark Star > Cumberland Blues stands alone, nothing like it. The Uncle John's Band is tasty too among other highlights. Classic fall 1972 GD. Thanks for suggesting this. '83 tomorrow?

A pre HDCD release. Solid show, had to turn it up a little more. Great from start to finish. And as you said Jim, Dark Star, Cumberland and Attics is worth a listen.

I’m actually psyched for Dicks 11. Perhaps my fav 72 show..?..HA! Who am I kidding, picking a favorite 72 is a fools errand, but I really like this show, especially for that sequence you guys mentioned!
I mean it’s got a DS AND a Cumberland, with an Attics for dessert!
Supposed to hit 91 up here today. Might need to eat cheebas, get necked and freak out the neighbors lol.
I think I need one of those kiddie pools to drink beer in ; )
Aw- right chil-rens, everybody into the pewal, oh wait, Jim’s got a big pool right out side his door!

Peak exhaustion setting in here.. Is it ever ok to wake someone up at 6:25 on a Sunday morning to ask a silly question and just say goodbye, I am leaving now? Silly question, no need to answer....

Setting the controls of the wayback to 4/26/83.. cheeba is in play.. I have much to do today that does not involve other people.. solitude and listening often go hand in hand.. I am off. I should feel a little better in about 20 min..

Spring tour 1983.. the first tour we figured out it was advisable to travel to see shows and see more than one show in a tour, although the latter would have to wait until Summer. It was strange to us then.. figuring out that with the Grateful Dead, you need to see more than one show in a tour, preferably consecutive shows in close proximity to maximize music and make your dollars stretch so you can then afford to see more shows. It was not in our vocabulary until that year.. Coincidentally, this was the year I bought my first car.

Have a good one all.. Sunday Sunday Sunday...

Lol, I’m such a bastard I think my poor ole lady would be scared to wake me up too early, for any reason!

SECOND PARAGRAPH: YES!!

Great synopsis of early touring methodology!
I would add trying to find the coolest places versus what would often be the easiest i.e., going to Maine for 2 shows instead of say Meadowlands for four....though that was not fully understood early on.
Personally I found quality over quantity to be more fulfilling, but 8 on one tour was the most we ever did, and in fact sold off our tix to 3 others, for various reasons. So I can’t speak for folks who did whole tours etc...some people lived for that...
I certainly don’t remember as much from the multiple run shows I did...
Three night runs, if you could spread em out, I liked best.
2 nights in a row damn near kills me nowadays lol.

Oh yeah, things don’t hurt so much anymore as the sun is actually shining in my back door, accompanying the music about such...hmmmm,
Almost time for a cool frosty treat!

Virgin listen for me and a great show.. I think it sounds better than any of the 83 shows released thus far.. and I prefer it to the 84 Philly released last year.

Right out the gate the get things moving with a ripping Shakedown. ..and you can tell they are having fun, in the dead space between Shakedown and Minglewood someone says, "I like that" (Jerry?Phil??). Nothing that unusual until the thundering set closer, Let It Grow, where Jerry just shreds it. There is some interesting and humorous banter mixed in, again showing they are having some fun.

The Help/Slipknot!/Franklins Tower is on point especially the Slipknot!, but they saved some special sauce for the Truckin'>Nobody's Fault but Mine/Spoonful Jam>Morning Dew. I think Phil must have been hitting the Heinekens for this one, he levels the power grid at the crescendo in the Truckin' outro Jam.. he just levels the place and again in Morning Dew. A really high energy show.. after listening to the whole thing I had to go back and hit the highlights to make sure it wasn't just me, which ended my day and my buzz.

So starts the new week. Great show.

...for me at least. I am going to hit Dave's Picks 35, The Spectrum 4/19&20/84 since I sort of compared this to the 4/26/83 show last night. We will see.... If I have extra time I might hit Dave's 36 to round up a mid 80's terror and help cement my understanding of these three somewhat recently released shows as I will probably put them away for a while.

Monday Monday.. Have a good week all.

Edit: Made cleaning the house last night and this morning 'almost' fun. At least it removed most of the boredom and monotony.. I hate cleaning but will likely never hire a cleaning service. I'd rather take the money and buy a Dave's Picks subscription and some edibles and do it myself.

I almost never keep up with this endless list of shows, but cracked the Philly show open and did the opening Shakedown. Very nice. I have the Miller copy.

Jim - I don't see edibles and housework going together! :-)
