Listening to this show is in itself a mind bending experience. The supplements may be best saved for lesser shows, which may be more in need of a helping hand.

Might just be my favorite all time show.. not that I could possible pick a favorite. Plus.. it has a draw or at least I feel a desire to either be really stoned or partake in time/space/perception bending accelerators. This one falls into the church music category, start to finish with that Midnight Hour nightcap that lets us know all is good with the world.

Good solid shows, but perhaps overshadowed by so many great shows that tour!

    2/22/74 sounds good Jim.

7/9/89-Fine release! Shakedown sets the tone. Yes to Queen Jane for me Jim. Sounded like Bob was trying to steer them into The Other One at the end of Truckin, but no luck. Brokedown Palace to close it out.

After I finished this show and Dave's #47, which I think is a great sounding release, I went on a 79 bender. Went back to #31. Not sure why but Jerry really slowed it down on 12/3 and 12/4.

Listened to 11/5 and 11/6, my two favorite shows of late 79. The energy is so high and then hit 12/28 (RT3.1). This Sugaree matches or exceeds some the of the Spring 77 versions.
Would love to see more 79 released.

I didn't know whether to head into the pre-midi Spring or the exploratory phases of the Fall and October. Many gems to be mined there. After the Mecca set, I headed on over to the JOTW, which is some chunky goodness from Cleveland 1979.

Would 2/22/74 help? I recently listened to 2/23 and 2/24 and again cursed that satanic Lemieux for releasing these shows as Dave's Picks instead of as the Winterland '74 TOO box set. Damn You Lemieux, you robbed us of another excellent Winterland Box Set!!

So 2/22/74 anyone? Since it's dead here.. how about sometime over the next week.

For what it's worth, I really like that 8/9/89.. I know Queen Jane Approx. isn't everyone's thing, but I like from Queen Jane through the China Rider on this one. I hit it up earlier this week. I even delved back into the second set of the 87 show from this box, opens with Morning Dew > PITB then Drumz Space, but those first two songs of the second set were spectacular.

I like the China Rider from that show. I could be wrong as I have not kept up with changes in the arrangement for this combo over the years.. but I think Jerry blows a verse somewhere in there and does a great job compensating for his mistake. He fills the empty verse with an impromptu refrain, then a nice jam and they are right back in it and you can barely tell. ..or perhaps that's they way they were doing it in 89, either way it's a powerful version especially if you drive it through a good system at volume. I listen to that show when I need to get shit done or am in a workout.

That and Augusta 84 are part of my get things done playlist. Anyway.. back to 73 and a little sleep for me. I'll be caught up soon and hope to come back on line here more.

I really liked Garcia Live 20, another high energy offering.. that After Midnight Deal medley is high octane stuff, I think this is the bonus material from the Stone in '81.

DV - not familiar with that one but I was at the next show of the tour 4/9 at the UIC Pavillion and that second set kicked ass in that straight ahead '87 "we're back!!" sort of way. My first show post jerry coma and a great way to usher in a whole bunch of excellent shows that I saw in '87. From what I remember the Healy matrix is sorta mediocre so maybe go audience. The UIC shows were the only ones from the spring tour that weren't East Coast and I think they fly a little under the radar.

Been distracted with house stuff last little bit. Started in yesterday on Dane Co '73 but didn't get very far.

Had another POTD near miss with that Shoreline May 91show. I caught the 3 Cal Expo shows right before it - only CA shows I saw except 12/89 at GWF in LA. Should have stuck around for Shoreline. Bruce had prior commitment during Cal Expo so i think they turned out to be first Vince-only shows after those first few shows in Fall 90(?) I never got to see Bruce as a member of the band but funny thing was I saw him sit in twice before Brent passed on - at Buckeye Lake 6/88 and Great Western Forum 12/89.

I smell a twofer. Add in the fun 66 show OroB tossed out last week and have a DB Hattrick.

This town ain't got no heart you say? You just gotta poke around.

Saw the boys last night at Blossom. Seemed risky to me, as safe as I tried to be. It was great to see live music for the first time in a couple of years though.. Fingers crossed, hope my levels of prevention worked...

Edit: Knocked out the first set of 4/7. In the same spirit as Dave's Picks 36. Healy liked a little soundboard with his audience mics in Ultra Matrix mixes in '87. You can hear the energy though.. The Jerry's Back tour for the East Coast.

It is..might take me a few days to sneak it in.
Used to work in empty houses much of the time, so I could play tunes...ironically, with the vid, I hardly get empty houses these days, Dooaahh! Lots of folks moving here more full time to get away, and many have been staying much longer than usual. Murphy’s law!

I hear ya Jim, We’ve got tix for Phil next week, but the way things are turning I’m getting a tad freaked.
Doubt the misses is going to risk it as she’s not really a fan. Thinking I might try to sell our inside seats and try and snag a lawn seat. I’d probably just not go but don’t know how long the ole dog has left and don’t get to see much of these kinda shows in our backyard.
But how was the show? Was it crowded, and how would you describe the demographic etc?

Bluecrow: nice to see ya!
What are your thoughts on those GWF 89 shows?
I believe my cousin said they were great, but I’ve never heard em...or maybe I’m thinking of the ones earlier?
89 being a top fav needs more investigation. Still not too familiar with spring and end of year...

The show was good, but I think not as bright as the NE shows before. A fun opening to the First Set, and the highlights of the second were a solid Althea and a nice second set Viola sandwich that meandered quite a bit going in and out of a funky psychedelic/blues approach to that crazy old jug band blues tune. The judge decreed it....

It was more crowded than I had hoped.. we got what was likely one of more discrete spots on the lawn under an old oak tree in the back, top part of the lawn. There was a stiff breeze all night coming down on us, so we mostly had what I would call almost fresh air.. still... being fully vaccinated and taking precautions there were risks. This was a redo show from last year so we all bought these tix pre pandemic.

Anyway.. it was great to see live music again, I just wish there was less risk. My fear is not getting myself sick but accidentally being part of the spread, so I will treat this next week very gingerly and stay away from everyone including those in my family (that are all also vaccinated). It's a good week to do outside wood working projects and long bike rides.... pistol packing lot's of GD of course.

I thought 4/7/87 was a good show. Recording and performance were good. Nothing mind blowing but I love hearing Box of Rain to open the second set and a Morning Dew in the mix. Quinn the Eskimo to close.

Fun shows in 87 and yes for sure got the feeling things were turning. I felt it in Alpine in June. Great memories. I can still hear that Feel like a Stranger and Tons of Steel.

Let's do the 4/9/87 next. Sounds great to me Bluecrow.

Pretty sweet you were able to see Dead & Co Jim. Sounds like a fun time. I know I would go if they came anywhere near us out here.

We probably should take a look at that 11/30/79 show per Proudfoot's recommendation. You don't have to twist my arm for a 79 show. Maybe Friday?

Nice call from '87. I was always familiar with 4-11, a couple nights later FM broadcast. BTW, 4-7 was one of the one's that helped get me on the bus. Also, 5-10-87 Laguna Seca is fun. There's a lot to like in '87 with a rejuvenated Garcia and pre-midi 80's spaces, which I like.

Thanks and have a Grateful Day everyone! :-)

4/7 - Nice pick, I enjoyed it, totally new to me, set list and everything. Ultramatrix was good, maybe a little heavy on the crowd at times. Band sounded in fine form. I thought Jerry was engaged and sharp. Song selection and placement seemed unusual at times. Stagger Lee always seems like a rarity. West LA, Bucket > Don't Ease closing the first set?! Really liked the Box of Rain to open Set II. To have that followed by Miracle > Bertha - once again would never have seen that coming. And did anyone catch Jerry teasing a bit of Slipknot at the beginning of space?? Just a couple of lines but unmistakable - to me at least :) Strong closing sequence to the show. Sounded like The Wheel was going to drop in before Gimme Some Lovin.

4/9 - don't have a source to straight up recommend. Since I last really looked there is a new Ultramatrix remaster by Charlie Miller that I think replaces the "mediocre"board I referenced. The relatively recent FOB shnid 148683 hessberg/miller/clugston seemed like a solid audience. I'll have to do some more sampling today.

Follow up: listening to Set I of 4/9 Miller Ultramatrix and that source does the trick. As Jim said - Healy liked a little SBD with his audience mics.

Yeah '87 was a tasty vintage. Enjoy the day everyone. Onward!!

87 is always welcome at my house. 4/9/87 must have been a fun show to be at Bluecrow. The version I listened to was decent, but needed a little work.

On to 11/30/79 today, per Proudfoot's recommendation.

Enjoy it.

I love the banter you hear on some of these shows. Especially with people yelling out requests all night long. That must have drove them crazy at times. I think it was Dick's 31, where Bob said quite yelling out songs we already played idiot.

yeah - it was a fun show :)

looking forward to 11/30/79 - only familiar with its crazy twin brother

a fun bit of in person banter was at the Jerry and John Kahn show at the Auditorium 7/1/82. Deep in the 2nd set and all sorts of folks are are yelling "Ripple, play Ripple" Then someone yells "Play what you want!" Jerry replies Thank You. And then he plays Ripple.

How about a lurker out there toss out a pick of the day. I know there are a couple..

Great show! Sound quality is really good, matrix recording. Love these early versions of Easy to Love You. Nice Peggy O, FOTD. Second set is hot, with a Scarlet Fire, Terrapin into Playing, Lost Sailor SOC. The whole show is worth a focused listen and thank PF for bringing it up on another thread.

Thinking about 4/15/89 at the Mecca in Milwaukee for tomorrow. There is a great sounding Miller available, recorded by yes you guessed it, Don Pearson. Hope you all can check it out.

Howdy everyone... greetings from the road in Rochester, NY.... I'm biased on this one, I was there on the floor in the fun area between stage and sound board.. really strong opening 3 songs, and the Blow Away also was good... for some strange reason i cannot recall the Morning Dew.... hmmm wonder why!! Good call Dead vikes... hey did anyone watch the interview with pigpen in the camper video from England 1970... also they practice Candyman on Youtube??? Pretty cool........ sorry if already discussed... Bob t

Hah, when I typed Bobt the spell check wanted to change it to Bong.

Anyway, those videos are on the bonus disc of the Long Strange Trip documentary.

Yes, I agree, great show Bob t. Good to hear from you. The recording is great and the show is hot. I was there as well Bob t. My main tour buddy and I drove from Minnesota without any tickets. Walked around all day trying to find tickets. I believe we scored some right before the show. We got into the arena and went to the usher behind the stage. The usher looked at us and said this was the tenth time he had seen the same row and seats in this section. What? Fake tickets. He looked at us and said go try and find a place to watch and have fun. And man, we did. What an experience. Definitely worth another listen.

Who has a pick for today?

I remember one of my friends back from my old haunts having a nice photo of Jerry from those shows that was featured in the Milwaukee Sentinel around the time of the shows. He called into the paper and ordered a glossy print, framed it and hung it in his living room. I remember it being a good shot of Jerry. I wish I could see it again, but a quick google search is yielding nothing.

Really loved the 11/30 show, 4/15;89 was good too, but didn’t seem to have the fire?
Those 2 Stanley’s would make a great Dave’s with Bonus, of course the haters heads would literally explode lol.
That Passenger was scorching! Forget what all else moved me but overall I thought it was great!
89 is usually a fav, and I liked it, but, maybe it was just me? It was good, but I don’t recall any of “those” moments, well, Dew was perhaps.
Anyway, 2 more cool shows under our belt, thanks for the picks guys!

I’m listening to Set2 and the Jam after Spoonful is quite interesting. Could be one of a kind, not sure. I haven’t heard another version of that Jam before that I can currently remember.

And the Beam has my house vibrating now.

Did somebody say Shakedown Street? I am on this one for tomorrow. Thanks Conekid.
Good to be busy I bet Oroborous. Yes, more 79 please, or shit any 79 at this point.

Yes, every show doesn't blow me away, but if the sound quality is really good and they have it going, it usually works for me. But for sure, Spring 89 doesn't compare to summer 89. Still enjoying this ride.

Stay well folks.

unplanned off today so let’s play....Dead!
91 to start then I need something on my server as I have tagging and things to do on there and need to HEAR something proper! As good as these streams can be their still stomped on sonically...

Oh, forgot to mention, last WE I finally succumbed to temptation, broke my purity vows, and listened to both 73 Danes, gulp. Yeah, hope they have good Beatty’s et el, cause these puppies need to feel the love!
Though I feel cheap and dirty, I’m still wallowing in the sinful pleasure, rrrrrrrrrrr
Great Dane Box Dave, do it!

DV: first, WTF happened with the Vikes? Hey, at least they had a chance at winning...fuggin Buffalo did for part of the first and then...Chad the Wonderboy and his trusty side kick Diggs couldn’t do squat. D was good early on but without any O that wasn’t going to last.
Busy would be better if I was working in empty houses so I could be fully in on TPOTDWD!
And less exposure! Actually returned our Phil tix for Friday. Pretty bummed as I might never see the old bastard again, at least not in our backyard. Things just getting too weird again so not worth the worry etc. hopefully I can stream somewhere?
But busy’s been a yin yang thing: it’s good for me to move around more, and money’s cool, but I hurt most days (especially the day I recently spent ballin a heavy hole hog on a ladder through 3” joists set every ten or 12 inches, and all because some whiny 20 year old wouldn’t stop bitching about how much it sucked and he didn’t want to do it, so I sent him elsewhere and did it myself) Advil is unfortunately becoming my new best friend lol.
That five months of “retirement” I had the luxury of was sweet, but as the song goes:
“ a taste of honey is worse than none at all”
Onward Amigos!

Another solid, enjoyable 91!
Vinny doing fine without Brucy, good sounding, High Time, Crazy Fingers suggests JG was feelin’ it..
Cool jam outta spoonful is most def coolamundo!
Almost sounded like he was playing on top of Half Step progression with some obvious parts removed?
Definetly had a neat familiarity about it...

Well, since I have Dane fever, figured I’d hit another that I’ve not heard: 6/24/83.

Didn’t get to give 6/24/83 a full immersion, but what I heard sounded pretty darn good.

Streamed Phil last night, part of three show package. Was supposed to go tonight but got a refund, just not there yet...breakthrough cases are now 18% of all new cases here in Colorado and it’s a small place.
Last night was decent, certainly not like the “quintet” but enjoyable none the less.
His kid does some Bob tunes and the set list was fun. His kid channels some decent ABB style playing too.

Really bummed not to go, but it is a nice to watch on big screen system in comfy chair, with powder room steps away and party favors at hand etc...

Personally, not so hot to call it pick worthy—only because there are other 73s I’ve been hoping for—but a fine, good sounding show fo sho! Another of those off the beaten path discoveries that we love here at POTDWD, and another notch on the show post!

Check this show out if you have not.

I started listening to this show this am. My copy was a very good audience, not sure which one but I pulled it down in 2012, I will have to research it. ..but I wondered if a decent soundboard popped up. Sure enough.. there is a Miller that appeared in 2014, so the second set will be technicolor for me.

Will check in after I pull it down and give it a complete spin.

So, figured I’d nock out the last of the Dane shows and continue my recon...2/4/79
Another solid GD show, not on par with some of the other Danes, but I better show than I would have expected!
Miller source for the first was decent, aud source for the second was ok, but not release worthy etc
So it comes down to tapes, and if they actual listen to us lol, but these 5 shows would make a fun box.
2/15/73 (4 Red Sweethearts outta 5)
10/25/73 (4)
2/4/79 (3-)
12/3/81 (3+)
6/24/83 (3)
Now, these aren’t all top tier, but imho their good enough to “round out” a box as has happened in the past...
So you have good shows, a catchy name,(complements of Vguy, or ? I forget, conekid, PF?) and you could use the art from one of those VIP backstage stickers that I’ve seen with a Great Dane on it, voila, done, instant box set in the same vain as Giants, and look how well that sold!
Ok Dave, hup, hup where’s the tapes!

7/1/73 Miller, right! That one sounds great!

EDIT: 8/4/89 for extra credit/housecleaning was bueno!
Perhaps the best of the run...picked up right where they left off the previous show...

This is a really good show. Sound quality is good, probably a B+ in my book. Can't remember two many shows that start with a minglewood, but this one does and it is a nice opener. El Paso kind of struggles, but they recover. To Lay me Down is great, nice Birdsong and they open the second set with a Woman are Smarter, I believe one of first couple times they played it. These Truckin versions get the Bob revision with Sweet Jane. I think this was a thing in 81. Nice Black Peter and late I Need a Miracle. Fun show.
81 does have a lot to offer.

I’ve had a second set tape since probably 81 that I loved. It was an aud with that weird guitar feedback before Women Are starts. I listened to it so often that It’s one of those recognizable moments when you instantly know what show it is!
First Women Are was 7/2/81, this one being the second performance. My first was In Chrotchfester on 4/9/82.
I probably got this tape partially because of “what’s this new song” etc...always loved it, and now dig the first set too.
Went Miller SB this time and yes, it does sound good!

Minglewood openers you say: 17 between 2/27/77 and 11/16/78, then 9 times between 9/6/79 and 9/2/80 when I saw it (my first one no less) one in between, then 10 times as an opener in 81. Looks like last time it was opened was 6/20/83. Think Jim was there?

EXTRA CREDIT: hit 9/20/91 per a comment by Sixtus elsewhere...
Another solid 91 show with cool one time H-S-Fire second set opener, good stuff!

Think I might continue on with those 91 Boston shows, but I will have a special request for this Sunday...
But, always open to something else from where the angels fail to tread....

Head down with shame...

I try to catch these shows regardless of who tosses them out, year, recording, etc.. but I do not recall listening to this one. It's possible (probable) that I didn't have time to pull it down and do all the work it takes to get it in my digital library.. or perhaps I was just busy or perhaps DVikes has a way with words...

Glad you are being a good sport about it.

Yes, glad we checked it out. I can't remember everything that we did or didn't do last year or even last week, my memory isn't that great. I tend to go back to shows that I enjoy as well. Hope it is not a sign of things to come.

Boston 91? I will have to look into these shows. What looks good?

Just teasing...I’m sometimes as bad/good lol as ole PF tossing out all kinds of things besides the chosen picks etc. Never would I expect anyone to follow me down all the rabbit holes I try en sniff out.
I just toss stuff out there and if it sticks cool, if not, cool lol...

7/7 I recall was one of those extracurricular shows and all that matters is someone else enjoyed it!

So, Baaaaassssstin 91.
Ooohhhh, Danny boy the pipes are calling! Or whatever ? (Don’t think it’s Shenandoah) their noodling on before set 2 on 9/21, aaaaannnd JG quickly recalls it in space but ya have to be paying attention...also some obvious classical music references but I’m not versed enough to know what it was?
9/20/91✔️
9/21/91✔️These shows are SOLID! Good sheet mon, going to move onto 9/22 in un momento...
Figured Id work through to DP 17, and THAT next night (9/26) being the big carrot. Dave has 9/26 on that original wish list of his, and if it’s as good as these, only better cause of the big dogs in the list, well I say bring it!
But I’m getting ahead of myself lol,
ONWARD!

Going full 91/81 (Europe March 81 anyone 3/14 - 3/28?) to fully cleanse after so much 71 earlier this year...so I’ll be ready for both the box, and to jump on the ole Doc 71 express again when it leaves the station, with hopefully conductor Strider to help us along...

EDIT: 9/22/91✔️Wow, this run is awesome!

And 89 and 90.

A few weeks ago I loaded a micro SDXC card for one of my music players with non-commercially released shows from 89-92 and have been working on those at home (commercial releases in the car).

Been hitting up September 91 a lot this month.
Did the Sixtus Special H/S/Fire last night. I had that show on cassette and played it a lot back then.
Just fired up 9/22 which I also had on cassette.
Notice during tuning at the start of the show Bruce fires off a quick little piano part from Quadrophenia.

Yes, Fall 91 has lots to offer as far as future Box Set possibilities of complete runs.
MSG
Garden
Oakland
Yes, they all need to be Normanized and released.

But, which one first?

Oakland, because 9/10 and 9/25 have already been released.

Feel free to pick one. 91 is hot here lately..

I have to say.. I was pretty blind to the later years (post 91) until 30 trips came out. Many of the years people don't often recommend shine in that box. 86, 92, 93 and 94 come to mind. You just gotta poke around.

That being said, 89 through 91 are strong years to these ears. Your pick Cone Kid.
