the whole shn /flac /mps things it just a matter of personal taste...some people care some don't..personally i am in to shn/flac just saves of space, time copying, and it sounds better but that is my opion....we are are all here as a community to share the music of the grateful dead......the one thing i think all of us needs to remember is, its not our music we did not createt it we do not own it as a personal possesion, but we do looooove it and cherish it . The grateful dead where nice enough to allowing tapeing and tradeing. Lets just all sit back and enjoy this precious gift we have been given....i remember listening to tapes all warped left in the sun, some one spilling bong water on them, and just dancing my ass off and just digin every fuck up sound coming from my speakers. so i remember we had this one tape that cut out right in the middle of drums blank for about 1 1/2 so we decide that was when the audiance was suppose to play and we would drum on anything around us...fun times .anywhooo...thats my opion let you life proceed by its own design fare the well now

    mp3 format converted to flac?
WHOA HOLD UP... this is a big no no...mp3 could be traded or vined...but that needs to be listed as such...not only did the Grateful Dead standardize the quality of many things in popular music...so did the taping community...frankly, mp3 is what it is...a super compressed digital format...I mean really digital is bad enough for frequency range, so for somebody to actually seed something that was MP3 and encode it to flac...that's really , really lame...and if done on purpose is tantamountly lame... This really should not happen whatsoever, I did see a "best of summer" DVD as a add on from a vine as MP3 , and that was OK, but I passed...as I don't really need to listen to that format and if I do : I will convert whatever music as I see fit... It really comes down to quality...I KNOW MP3 is convienent but as a standard of quality it really pales in comparison to .wav files or lossless files converted to .wav aka "standard red book CD format quality" - now some 24 bit at 96 kHz stuff might be interesting to seed later....but this would be played through a DVD player to handle such encodement... MP3 SEEDS AS FLAC IS WAY WAY LAME - KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING WHEN SEEDING - PLEASE FOR EVERYBODY'S SAKE.... Ursa Minor http://www.myspace.com/donnieloeffler "the warm wet world of analog audio"

    1. flac files can of course easily be converted to WAV and burnt to CDs. That is what I do for the car stereo and for favourite shows 2. The Cowon iaudio series of portable players can play FLACs (and WAVs but not SHNs) directly. www dot cowonglobal dot com If you are buying a new player it may be worth considering. Greg MacFarlane has one. 3. It is now possible to convert many MP3 players to play FLACs and SHNs (as well as MP3s) by installing a cool and free programme called Rockbox. www dot rockbox dot org I converted my ipod to Rockbox just by following the instructions and can now load and play flacs and shns directly for mobile lossless listening pleasure without having to convert to MP3. Of course they take up a lot more disc space hth CB

I agree with Cosmic, any shows that are sourced from Lossless Legs are not MP3's converted back to a lossless format. The folks there would never permit this to happen - the hard core traders run a spectrum analysis on the music and if it were Lossy data they would yank that torrent right down. Just to jump in,
I echo the sentiment of cosmic badger and offer thanks to all who share this wonderful music so well in this forum (and thanks to marye for her kind assistance). That said, I also state that I am not big into the flac offerings. My computer is not hooked up to my stereo in any fashion and when I want to listen, I pop one the grate shows I got from the vineyard into my stereo and crank it. I am not a big 'headphones' kind of guy (unless it is late night listening, out of consideration for my wife.) I do see the value of the flac and even loading the shows into the computers 'hard drive' for storage. Forgive me, like some of my other cohorts (dwindling numbers as we speak), I appreciate and will continue to sign up for the CDs, as they are most conveient for my uses (in my recent trip to Minn we listened to the vineyards aural treasures for 10 hours). Maybe in the future I will take up some of the offers to send 'hard drives' to have years of GD or JGB 'loaded' onto them. Where I sit right now is being thankful to all who share, grateful that I was able to share, and just got to smile, smile, smile, when I think of what trading and sharing consisted of in the old daze. We got it good people. Let's maintain the positive vibe and continue to spead the joy. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

    1. IMHO everyone who takes the trouble to assemble some shows and share them on the vines is a superstar (whatever the content, quantity or name of the vines). Establishing hierarchies, competing and bitching are unnecessary and undermine the integrity of this place. Why do it? 2. It all boils down to this. Trade losslessly and do not insert MP3 generations. WAV, FLAC and SHN are lossless formats. FLAC is the most convenient and the most popular because the data files are smaller and easy to copy and convert to anything else. It takes 30 minutes to learn how to deal with FLACs 3. The shows traded losslessly on LL were not downloaded from Archive as MP3s. If there was an MP3 generation in those files it would be shown in the provenance of the show. Before the clamp down on Grateful Dead SBDs all those shows were uploaded (and downloadable) as FLAC or SHN files by a wonderful community of people wishing to share and archive everything in perpetual lossless format. In fact the auds on archive still are downloadable in Lossless formats but only on a file by file basis; just scroll down the page and you will see that you have a choice of formats. It was once like this for the SBDs too. If you want the FLACs you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by using the ‘Down’ em all’ plug in for Firefox, which will grab all the files for you in one go. Have a nice weekend CB

Hell yea I`m stoked for that too !! and a 68 vine , oh yea that too I can`t wait for !! Back to mp3/shn/flac for a momemt , all I know is that shn/flac does in fact sound better to me as of my recent discovery of Foobar 2000 . But I guise it also depends on the systme you are using to play said music . I don`t know too much about WAV formats . But I do know that there are people seeding shn/flac on shn/flac.net that have been dowed from arcives.org , wich we know that is all mp3 format .. to my ears shn/flac does sound better to me then mp3 and with the correct equipment it can be played on my car radio . And I`m quite sure that some vines that where seeded here have been in mp3 format at one time or another . now that I think of it I`m sure I seeded shn/flac vies that where mp3 at one time and not even realize it at the time , but i do keep a better eye out for the mp3 to shn/flac when i down anything from shn/flac.net or any other site . Man this can all get way to confusing for me so I think I`ll exit this conversation . Way too many different formats !! I agree with Unclejon lets just enjoy the music as it is ( was ) intended to be .. Hope you all have a Grate weekend !! Peace .. Stu ..

Check sbd new hanno 20168 on archive and let me know if the sound is any good. I have that source but haven't converted it, assuming it is the same as my WAV source, which I grade as AUD C for set 1 and SBD B/B+ for set 2, which means it is just about unlistenable. Also maustin, if you want, you can figure out which Sept-Nov 72 have not been vined, or which ones died long ago, and I can do a supplemental fall 72 vine. I have most of the SBDs at the very least. I know one of the Waterbury shows wasn't on the original Sept 72 vine. Not sure which one, 9/23 or 9/24. Also, it may not have included the full 9/16/72 show. I have sbd.cotsman.9247 (about half the show AUD, half SBD) for that one. You can be first if you want to do this. I don't know how long the Oct and Nov 72 vines lasted.

9/3/72 is not on the September 72 vine as presently constituted. Good intentions pave the way to hell, or to varying degrees of confusion. I gave a partial re-seed of the 9/72 vine when it died, using CDRs only. The shows are listed in my post on that vine. 9/3 was not included, but both Waterbury shows were. I believe 9/16 was complete, but much was an audience recording. The Dark Star was a good soundboard. If a new September vine is to be attempted, I can contribute if it helps. Steve

Somestimes vines overlap, and that can be a good thing. I just stumbled on something this weekend while listening to my copy of 5/5/77 New Haven, CT. This was vined on a CDR in the "1977-05-05 May 1977 East Coast Vine" and on a DVD (flac) in the "1977 Lossless Vine: Part 2." I got both vines but I was only listening to the CDR copy from the 'East Coast Vine." Set 1 Tenn Jed had a 4 second drop-out dead air at the 1 minute mark (rich man step on my poor head..), and I think I heard another drop-out later in the song. Bertha had a minor pop glitch towards the middle-end of the song. I had my cell phone laying next to this CDR for a short time, and I thought the magnetic field had erased portions of the song. I don't think so. I went and checked the betty board version on the flac DVD "1977 Lossless Vine: Part 2." There were 4 DVDs, and this show in on DVD#1. Wow! This is a better source, and there is no drop-out in Tenn Jed. Tenn Jed is complete on this source. So I ditched the other CDRs and re-burned the betty board source. You might wanna check if you want the best source.

We may never see a complete quality recording of this 3 set afternoon on 9/3/72. Owsley was running the board, I believe. First set indeed is a low quality audience with stops between songs.2nd set Bertha is missing a channel (vocals) for awhile. 3rd set seems to be the only set of the show with a decent recording. Check Dicks Picks 36 for a taste! I do have the complete show as described above with multi-sourced/multi-generational history. Did One More Saturday Night end this show?

I love that William Blake quote. (sorry if i'm slow to navigate the technology here. i'd honestly rather be writing cursive and sharing that. OK that's the new topic -- hands -- things of beauty created by HANDS. lately lots of virtual art/realities have been created in cyberspace, but if/when that shuts down, will people still be able to weave, knit, sew, sow, reap, harvest and ferment their own food, clothes? oh yeah, make and play musical instruments?) What do you do when you're NOT on the internet? With your hands? To get into flow? To make yourself happy? To create beauty?

@ Freeworld: Thanks for the advice, but, we're just a bunch of hippies doing the best we can. If everybody who came into the Vineyard had a good heart (like the vast majority of us) and didn't just disappear with a boatload of vines, it would work just fine. Unfortunately, there has been a recent influx of selfish folks that have caused problems. I for one wouldn't want too much structure. Peace, "That path is for, your steps alone."

Received 10 DVDs full of JGB 76 this week. I'm definitely not gonna vine the whole thing, but I am willing to do 1 DVD + with other's help WAV CD's, total of 5 or 6 shows at a time. I would only vine the shows I think are very good shows or better and of A- or better sound quality. So I have to listen to them first. But I am willing to vine them as I go, and don't have to listen to the entire year before starting the first vine. I would try not to include shows that have already been vined (I'm not converting and listening to shows I already have in A/A- sound quality). Post here if there is interest. Also, I posted in one of the Pink Floyd vine threads about a possible PF part 3 vine. I think 1 person expressed interest. Are others interested? It would be 1 DVD with WAV files too. I have a bunch of GREAT earlier stuff (post-Syd but pre-Dark Side), plus more good Animals and Wall era.

Sounds like people are interested in both. I will work on the PF this weekend, and the JGB once I listen to enough shows that I see fit to include. So far I have listened to 1/9, 1/27, 1/28 and 2/13, and only 1/27 will be included. 1/9 is interesting as James Booker rather than Keith is on keys, but the SBD is pretty hissy and definitely hampers the enjoyment.

In case this helps jackstrawfromcolorado determine which shows from 78 to vine, here are my thoughts regarding the first part of the year, through May 78. I have listened to everything and graded all but a handful of shows (and the shows I have not graded (1/6, 7, 8, 18) have already been vined). I grade the following shows as GREAT (5 out of 5 stars): 1/13, 1/22, 1/31 and 4/16. All of these shows have been vined. The 4/16 vine is still flourishing, but I am not sure about the other 3 shows. 1/13 and 1/31 I vined on the 78 six pack vine I believe. I have fine with those being revined. I grade the following shows as VERY GOOD (4 out of 5 stars): 1/10, 1/11, 1/17, 2/1, 4/10, 4/11, 4/12, 4/14, 5/5, 5/6, 5/7 & 5/14. Of these, 1/17, 4/14, 5/5, 5/6 and 5/14 have not been vined, AND as I recall 5/7 was only vined as an AUD, and there is a nice SBD out there, which I would definitely include on a vine. So, I think those 5 VERY GOOD unvined shows, plus the SBD of 5/7, would make a pretty nice vine. My source for 1/17 was cotsman.4555, for 4/14 miller.83717, for 5/5 and 5/6 the glassberg.motb, and for 5/14 sony.vernon.7639. If you wanted to revine the GREAT shows, that would be a sweet vine too. Just my thoughts, no offense will be taken if you select other shows and go another route. Thanks!

That show was also part of what I at least consider to be one of the "original vines" here. It might be called New Orleans '71. Yamadog started that one 3 yrs ago or so. That was back when I used WMP to burn shows, and couldn't eliminate pauses btwn tracks, so on my copy there are 5 seconds of silence btwn tracks.

Anyone know whether it is true that new Miller SBDs from 72 and new SBDs from 81 are becoming available? I checked my notes on 6/22/73 and I only graded the show as Good, with D4 being Very Good (Other One, Jam are hot). I also noted that Bird Song and China Cat were especially good. Maybe I need to give the show another spin. I'm not quite up to 1000 shows yet, but am inching closer, thanks to everyone here!

Just a thought that I'm tossing around here for a new vine. This vine would be from various artists recorded at Ebbet's Field in Denver between '73 and '74. If someone could school me in how to convert .wav files to flac I'd do it that way. If not it would be .wav. This vine would included artists such as Muddy Waters w/ B.B. King, Bob Seger, Brewer & Shipley, The Ozark Mountian Daredevils, The Outlaws and Howlin' Wolf. I do have more shows from this venue, but these are the better of the lot. Any and all feedback is helpful...........

This doesn't have anything to do with vines, but I know most of you have had some experience with drives, computer problems, external drives ect. My most recent problem involves a 2 terabyte external hard drive (a WD my book essential). I was actively moving files from it to a laptop when the laptop crashed. When I got the laptop back on I found that the hard drive was locked. This is a feature of the drive that I have never used, so I don't have any password set up. I went to the WD website and forums and it is a glitch that happens only if the drive loses power while it is moving files. Unfortunately they haven't been able to find a solution, they have known about it for two years. I can always reformat the drive so it's not trash, but it has Some of my Garcia, Dead, 600 gigs of Beatles and about the same of Pink Floyd. Right now I have been trying some data recovery software with out any luck. I did read on one guys blog who had this happen how he took the drive apart with a screw driver and pluged it into his computer. Don't really want to do that though. Also someone suggested I put the hard drive in the freezer for 24 hours, plug it in and I will have a few minutes to transfer files before the write protect kicks back in (then put it back into freezer for 24 hrs). If anyone has ever had anything like this happen I could really use your help. I am not in any hurry, and am willing to try just about software, hacking trick before I take a screwdriver to it. Any way thanks for reading, and any help is appreciated. Thanks Robert
