There are 464 profiles/users at deadnet at this very moment. Holy crap. The average (mean) way back a few weeks ago was like 10 to 20. I checked a few profiles, and all the one's I checked had been activated exactly 1 week ago +/- a few hours or a day. What in the world? Are they all here for the freebies? I have had more trouble accessing pages and logging in today. Is it a bandwith issue? We here at the super secret vineyard need to prepare for a population boom once folks start figuring out what we are up to. This could be mass chaos...;-) Look what happend to Dodge City in the late 1800s and urban sprawl today. :-)

but has anyone tested it? Just take take two cds, both with the same jam...one in mp3 format, one lossless (don't label which is which)...mix em up....and of course listen on the same speakers to control the experiment......after the fact write your guess as to which is which and see if u can tell a difference....I have not done this test myself but my theory is there would be no discernable difference between the two. That being said, I keep my shows in Lossless format on my external hard drive for archiving and compress to mp3 for personal use. "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. That's exactly what I do too. With a few CDs sprinkled in for good measure. I haven't found a way to flawlessly listen to my ipod in the car yet so that's where CDs are nice. A lot of you probably do not use audio editing software, but Mp3's are pretty much useless in that area. When I open a 50mb flac format song in Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition, it uncompresses to almost a gigabyte. Thats just one 10min song. I use this to get rid of tape hiss, or try and smooth over a tape flip. When I save the flac file in flac format it does not lose any information. I can open it and save it as often as I like and the information remains. Mp3's on the other hand will lose a little information every time I save them. For example, If the song were a painting: Compressing it in flac format would be like rolling it up and putting it in a tube. It would look the same the next time you open it. Compressing it in Mp3 format would be like folding it up and putting it in your pocket. Each time you opened it and put it away the folds and creases would get worse. A tale tell sign of an Mp3 in this condition is when no matter how loud you turn the voice and lead guitar sound muffeled. If you like Mp3's, cool. I use them in my Zen player and my wifes ipod. I dont see anything wrong with a Mp3 vine either. I sent That Nice Hippy Guy a Sublime concert in Mp3 format. It sounded pretty good! But please dont encode Mp3 back to flac. They will get mistaken for the real thing if the recipients of the file do not have the software to distinguish between the two. Thanks( I guess thats my 2 cents)

A few weeks ago I tried converting an mp3 to wav just to see what would happen and the file ended up being a cda file when it was all said and done. cda files are the format you get if you buy a CD from the store. So I thought that was weird. I don't care that much as I would never convert mp3 to wav or flac anyways but I just wanted to understand it better... "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Thanks for the explanation from us less technically knowledgeable souls. Does the same thing happen each time you save or copy a .wav file? From what I can gather from this topic, the answer would be no. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. But they are not compressed. And you can copy an mp3 from one folder to another and not lose any information, It's just in editing software. Of course when the mp3 was originaly made it lost the info on the high and low end of the song to make it smaller. But you can copy an mp3 to another computer or disc as an mp3 and it remains the same file. If you want to see some generation loss try this. Convert some mp3's to wav and burn cd with them. Then take that cd and convert the wav files back to mp3 and compare to the original mp3s.

I recentley been listening to a show in flac format via Foobar 2K. I then converted that show to WAV so i could burn it to disc , well it sounds way different to me ..the high`s and lows are cut down and it dos`nt have that punch you in the face feel to it anymore . I`m glad i save everything in flac mode .. Now I have been working in the mechanical services industry all my life ie, cars, trucks, small engines ,motor cycles, so I have a pretty good ear for sound . I can hear a bolt rattling loose on my Harley when i`m going down the road at 80 mph. plus I did own a small electronics repair shop for a little bit ( that was more just a hobby actually ) so I`m familliar with osciloscopes and how sound waves look and sound like .I built speach prossesors for cb radios that compressed the highs to make cb raidios sound like they had more power then they actually did , by increasing the sound modulation.. I`m suprised I can hear like that at my age , lol .. So with the help of CB and Rick I discovered the foobar programand nothing sounds as good as shn/flac , not wav not mp3 not any of the popular formats.. Now getting back to the LL web site , if it is not permited to seed from a mp3 converted to flac then why is there a link to the archives site for a some of those shows ? I mean anyone can create a flac file . I have a tape to pc converting program so i can archive my personal tapes to my pc then burn to disc. now with that progran and that tape deck I can record any streaming audio then send it back through my antique EQ then back into my pc make needed changes , create the text document , use traders little helper to create the md5 checksum and then create the flac files . And the end product is somthing that sounds better then the original audio .. I know there was somthing else i wanted to say but i can`t remember it now .. Anyway , I hope everyone has a most excelent day !!

Perhaps it is better not to think of The Archive as a trading site, but as a permanent online library. It is like a massive stored music collection that belongs to everyone. So downloading a file as an MP3 from the Archive is like making an MP3 from your own losslessly stored music collection. So long as the FLAC/SHN files remain permanently on the Archive in unaltered state, then anyone can always go back there and guarantee to get the best possible version. It is a matter of honesty and trust that people do not upload files to the Archive that have a misrepresented lineage. And there are people out there who will soon detect an MP3 generation in a file by looking at the frequency range. By withdrawing permission for making Soundboards downloadable from the Archive the Dead helped create all this muddle over formats etc. If we all knew that the best quality shows were permanently stored and available 24/7 on our behalf in the best available (ideally lossless) format, then many of these discussions would not be taking place and the trading and torrenting sites we use might not exist in their current forms. But what then would we all have to talk about? Of course the Dead had reasons for doing what they did. There is the issue of intellectual property of their works (important to any artist) and, naturally, money (Blair Jackson has reported here that the Archive virtually killed off sales of the later Dicks Picks releases). So now it is a bit harder and more confusing to get all the shows we want as easily as we want, but it is not really that much hassle. And we should not forget just what an act of tolerance and generosity it is that this site tolerates open trading of shows that are not officially released. One way of saying thanks is to try to buy at least some of the official releases. It would be interesting to know how the sales of the these are holding up, given that fact that, despite the Archive restrictions, most of the shows are still quite easy to obtain.

Hey we have to have somthing to talk about , lol .. And I agree with the rest of what you said CB. You said we can download flac from the archives site ? that one is still a mystery to me . maybe I`m doing something wrong there . And yes we should purchase some offical releases when we can , and I do that when my credit card allows me to do so ..

For GD shows you can only do this for Audience recordings. Soundboards may only be streamed. Go for example to http://www.archive.org/details/gd1975-06-17.aud.unknown.87560.flac16 Scroll down the page to the heading Individual Files. You will see a whole table of files and formats. The first column is headed FLAC. Click on each file to DL it. Tedious but it works. If you DL the Down'em all plug in for Firefox you can DL all the FLACs in one go and save a lot of bother. Other Artists let you DL FLACs of Soundboards, including David Gans http://www.archive.org/details/DG20030420.flac16

Like many here I remember the days of analog and the introduction to digital. I will say after being immersed in digital since the mid 80's and up until about a year ago, I've made the swtich back to analog format. What I mean is I prefer analog for many reasons. Of course, I don't have all these shows on cassette , reels and LP anymore; I have my share of CD's, DATs, DVDs and HD's, but I now employ a complete analog system. I use a Dynaco ST-70 tube amp and a Dynaco PAS-2 tube preamp. I also use my Revox A-77 reel to reel, Thorens TD-125 mk II turntable with the Shure SME 3009 R2 tone arm, and I've got a Yamaha KX-630 tape deck. I've also got a Sony DAT ZA5ES. I'm using a assortment of speakers from Bose 301 series II mid 80's, Altec late 70's bookshelfs, and finally getting some Klipsch La Scalla's from mid 80's. I use a regular commericial Sony CD player but use a "cheap" but effective digital to analog converter that uses a Burr Brown PCM-1716 chip. I use the digital out from the CD player into the DA converter...so there is only one conversion to analog. What I'm saying is this: old debate of digital is compressed anyway in comparison to a nice master reel, well pressed LP. Of course, digital get's better when the sample rate is higher and the resolution increases. However, I still will contend after years of using digital professionally as a studio engineer and as a musician has it's advantages greatly, but I still rather fancy the sound of analog better. As for the archive , it's simply that a resource library of digital material. One thing for sure is that digital is THE way for mass producing and distributing music. However, just last year the greatest increase in sales was in vinyl records that are being pressed by re-issues of older recordings or new releases by artists who relish analog formats. by the way, you can still get the digital SBD stuff via stream if you really want to work at it you get a digital s/pdif output from your computer via the USB - take that feed and go digital into a either another HD or DAT - then you can input that into some editing software splice the gaps, it won't be bit for bit, but it will be marginal digital quality... First thing , no offence to vist users but umm vista sucks . thats just my opinion of course. From time to time discs burned with vista are not compatible with xp systmes . so here is what my wife has to do everytime she burns a disc for me . " First go to my computer - click on open it will say "burn a disc" disc title she has to leave blank - just leave the date there or it will not burn correctly - there is a "show formating options" with an arrow button , click on it then click -mastered- then drag and drop - then click burn to disc. " Now i dunno if all vista systmes are like this but thats how my wife has to do it . I hope this helps .. Take care and I hope everyone has a super nice day !! Stu ..

I agree Stuman. Vista sucks. Lets hope Windows 7 will be better now that we have all paid to debug Vista for them. It may be worth avoiding the built in burner and instead use a separate (and free) burning programme such as Burn4Free

do you get the same results if you use other software to burn - e.g. Nero or one of the open source packages vs. using the buil-in burning feature? It might make a difference, but I'm not sure.

I have stopped seeding vines for now... Why... because 100% of them are either gone the way of the jstraw and MITD vine destruction or discs are misplaced or lost when sent from one viner to the other. I am sick and tired of trying to reseed or replace. I probably won't contribute much in the future which is a shame but it takes time out of either work or family to do these and for them to just evaporate is ridiculous. So this is a call to all viners to TAKE CARE of each vine and send it on its way the same way your received it. Don't sign up for too many vines at the same time. Have some respect for the good people that have been seeding these. Marty

and I have xp. A lot of cd's and dvd's burned on vista will not read on a computer running xp. Sometimes they will show the disc is blank. She is a photographer and gives her clients dvds. It took us a while to figure out what was going on.(it was a big mess) Some of the dvds worked and some didnt. We found out the people that had the working copies also ran vista. We now burn everything on my computer. I hope windows 7 is better, I know xp will not be supported much longer.

Marty et al, I really appreciate all the vines and music from all of you. I started out with basically nothing a year ago. I had about 6 shows on cassette tape I got in 1990 and 1991 in college. Now I have over 160+ shows on CDR. Being able to read flac is the jackpot. I have more shows on DVD I have not had time to convert to wav CDR. That's another 20+ shows right there. Anyway, I maintain a list of vines I sign up for. I cross out the ones I get in the mail and then send back out. I have this list taped to my office wall. There are 15 vines I have not received yet for various reasons (lost, not my turn yet). I don't have the time (and I am lazy) to go search out the status. MITD sent me an excel spreadsheet of his active vines. I have it if anyone wants to see it. I got it about a month before he went AWOL. I think what we need is some spring cleaning. For us to pronounce dead some inactive vines and have Marye remove them from the pages--wipe the slate clean. EDAD

That we have identified the guilty parties in the missing vines mystery and the fact that people have been better about contacting folks prior to sending that the issue is/will be much better. However there are definitely some vines that are gone for good unless someone can do some re-seeding. "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Maybe we should think of vines as living things. They are born they live a life and they die. Some live to a ripe old age. Some are cut down in their prime. Some die of neglect or mistreatment, some fade away as a result of natural causes. No matter how much folk try to care for them, some we lose to the actions of bad people. When we create a vine we send it out with our best hopes, but we cannot control what happens to it. So long as good people keep creating vines and the majority care for them the vineyard will thrive, despite the losses. :-)

Thanks CB for your philosophical perspective and many more thanks for your efforts updating the vinedex and creating musical compilations to share. Is there a folder for identifying AWOL vines? I had a case where a dvd that came to me appeared to be blank - or unreadable, and I took an old (really old) DVD ROM drive & hooked it up with an IDE to USB cable - and it was able to read the DVD - and I copied the data off. Sometimes these little esoteric technical glitches can be a real pain. Also, I was having trouble with a movie package (Pinacle Studio 12) and the tech support said I needed RW dvd's - so I bought them - and then realised my burner won't deal with them. However, I have a work laptop that loves them. & I have a whole spool of them - but I'm leery of putting out a vine dvd on a RW disc. For now, I'm thinking of using them as data back-ups to free up some disk space. I'd appreciate any thoughts on if it would be bad to send a vine out on RW discs - what with all the people not able to read stuff already & losing things.

1. Insert a disc into your computer's CD or DVD drive. 2. In the dialog box that appears, click "Burn files to disc." 3. In the "Burn a disc" dialog box, type a name for your new disc. 4. Also in the "Burn a disc" dialog box, click "Change version." This will open the "Select a Live File System Version" dialog box, where you can choose a different formatting version for compatibility with different kinds of computers. Select Live File System version 1.5 or 1.02. Either one will work with Mac OS X Tiger (my computer), but earlier Macs and PCs may need version 1.02; it's pretty much universal. It's versions 2.01 and 2.5 that are the least compatible, and unfortunately Vista is set at 2.5 until you change it. 5. Click Next to prepare the disc. The "Mastered" workaround that stuman mentioned works too, as does switching to XP, which is what a lot of people have done (generally speaking; I don't know if anyone in the vineyard has switched). For Mac owners, I believe Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and the new Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), the latter of which ships this Friday, both accept the Live File System 2.5 DVDs (ie, the default version in Vista). But without upgrading my OS I have to fire up my PC laptop (XP, but it sees the Vista-created DVDs) and move the files over to a flash drive, which I then open on my Mac. Ain't technology grand?? :-) ~~~~~~~ "They say Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice"

If the problems were straight up vista/xp incompatibility wouldn't it be more widespread, it seems more random in the vineyard unless the majority of us are using vista. I will try your suggestion oh yeah the next time I burn a DVD for a vine (which will be soon!!) :-) "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. I will update the Vindex again in September some time. With the arrival of so many new megavines its going to get a lot bigger for sure. I was thinking of marking on the Vindex which Vines are dead, but as we know, pronouncing the death of a vine can be an unreliable business. MITD and others had done a lot of work to identify the status of all the vines but I am not sure where we are on that now. I really do not fancy going through every single vine in the vineyard to check its status. However a 'quick and dirty' way to do this is to go to the index for the Vineyard. Home » Forums » Dead Heads » Tapers>The Vineyard. This lists all the vines in order of the most recent post. If you go to the last pages of that you can see which vines have been inactive for a long time. This does not mean the vines are dead, they may just have reached the end of the line. And of course vines with more recent posts may actually be dead; someone might have just been asking recently where it is! But it does give you a very rough idea. Based on this, here are the 45 out of around 295 vines with no activity (MIA) since the end of May (3 months ago). 15-20% attrition in 2 years ain't too bad. this will be the last time I propose a new topic for requests for re-seeds. Frankly, I don't understand why the idea has been shot down in the past, but it seems clear (to me at least) that a single spot where requests can be made and filled is necessary. Anybody who wants to have a vine revived can post and someone likely will re-seed. If there is no interest then no one will request a re-seed. This would also obviate the need to constantly go through single vines to see what needs to be re-seeded. Thanks again to everyone in the Vineyard. Thank you Badger .. all those are mia vines ? crap man thats too much .. pomo1, I agree with you . it would be much easier that way . It is kinda a pain in the ass to go through every page and every posting on a vine to send mass pm`s to people requesting re-seeds . As far as re-seeding vines , I would be more then happy to re-seed however I don`t have a external dvd burner for my XP right now and lack of funds also makes it a little hard for me to re-seed anything ..not to mention the whole vista-xp thing .. But I will try to do what i can .. Thank you everybody for seeding and re-seeding !! This is a magical place for music !!

Let's just ask Marye to set up a Vine Reseed Request Forum and see how it goes. Can't do any harm. Can I suggest we try to keep it free of general chit chat and such so that the requests are easy to find? Someone posts a request. If someone can help they post to say so and also post on the relevant vine page and off we go again.

There needs to be some organization. Wipe the slate clean. Do something. I agree. It's too much of a pain to go through every page. I'm too lazy to do it. I wonder if a filter can be set up to dump inactive vines (last post over a month or 2) into a separate folder. That would eliminate all those dang pages. The request for re-seeds is fine with me.

CB said that these vines were inactive, that does not man they are all lost. I have sat on vines for months and then someone requested it, so I don't see why there should be a spot for inactive vines, especially when someone is sitting on them and happy to mail them when the next person signs up. So we have at least 80% of the vines that are now active since May. I think that is very good. I think if you added the vines that people are sitting on and no one has requested the % would go up quite a bit. So I bet our cup is 85% or more full, I think that is incredible. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

The re-seed thread would need to be very specific to vines we know are lost for good. Trust me I have a really good idea of which ones those are! As for vines that we are simply sitting on waiting for a sign up, those require some diligence in that they should get bumped up to the front of the list from time to time so that they become visible. Those types of vines are attractive becasue there is no wait but they need to be advertised a little. "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. it's good to have as many approaches as possible, but most of the re-seeds i have done are from people requesting them from me - on occasion, I go looking to see if something has broken down & try to fix it, but for the most part, once i send it out, it's in the hands of the community. I agree with Badger - it can't hurt to have a special place to look - but also agree with Hal - sometimes nobody signs up & they just sit with someone. Raymondbrown has been begging folks to sign up for vines that he was the last recipient of - and I have the Bobby & the Midnites vine, waiting for someone to sign up. Also - did anyone have comments on using RW dvd's (only because I bought them & my pc doesn't like them - but the laptop does). I'm hesitant to send out vines on RW media because someone may erase it - but then we have all the other perils too - so it may not matter - it's just an issue of economics.

It is interesting what you say about RW's. You may be on to something! All of the vines I have out there are on DVD-RW. Maybe that explains why stuman has had some issues with the vines I have sent out? I would just think more people would be having issues. I don't know, maybe next time I'll just buy DVD-R. I think I'm going to break the fall 1981 vine into 2 parts. First will be the last 3 shows from early fall which marked the end of their U.S. tour. The second part will be some of their European tour in early October which has not already been seeded here according to the vinedex. All of the shows are nice SBDs and I am excited to share them. JSFC, I haven't dug deep enough into it to find the exact answer other than people run different versions of XP (eg, no service pack, SP1, SP2); when I last looked, the Microsoft site said that the more recent versions of Live File System are incompatible with "some" XP computers. The XP on my work laptop is regularly maintained by large corporate IT department, so I imagine its one of the most recent versions, probably with a good many tweaks and add-ons to satisfy the IT folks. So I'm not surprised that it doesn't balk at the LVS 2.5 DVDs that Vista automatically creates. ohyeah ~~~~~~~ "They say Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice"

Question... I am converting FLAC to .wav and I now have 3 seconds too much time on a first set that doesn't include any specific track for tuning at the beginning. I could go out and get a 90 min CDR I suppose... but is there any way to cut 5 seconds off the beginning tuning leading into the show opener? I only use TLHelper and Roxio Creator programs.... so there is nothing else on this computer except the standard Windows programs..... not even a WaveMaker program... This is from the Uptown Theater 1981 Vine btw.... a GREAT little collection... 3 nights all matrix plus one straight SBD for comparison purposes.... so I actually have two sources for this same show.... and could burn the board but the matrix sounds so much better IMO.... Anyway.... thought I would ask... Thank you all very much.... I have been imbibing of the fruits of the vineyard and have enjoyed immensely.... and your kindnesses and willingness to share are deeply appreciated. I am forever grateful. Raymond

Roxio may have an option to over burn the disc. Five seconds should not be to much for the rest of us to find the disc's as un-usable.Good luck

Pick-up an editing program to reduce or edit a track. Cool Edit Pro is very good and easy to use.
