    Indy 81, yes sir Mr BC definitely the best I’ve heard of the 6 or 7 I’ve listened to so far from that tour!

    Mr Sun? Feel like I must of seem them at Rocky Grass BITD?
    Nutcracker sounds interesting, definitely will have to check out.
    Can you recommend some of their more jazzy stuff? i.e., is there an album if such…believe I’ve heard them described as jazz grass?
    Of course that makes one think of Bela/Ftones or Dawg, but I’ve always really dug Strength In Numbers Telluride sessions!
    Need more of this but it has to be more jazzy than Grassy…both my preference and TOO can’t abide any “hillbilly twangy crap” LOL
    That’s ok Luv, I can’t stand that prepackaged Beat from hell shit you like lol

    Since our band is well covered here, a short report on a recent concert held at of all places, the National Gallery of Art in Washing Tundy Cee. Mr. Sun band developed their interpretation of the Ellington Strayhorn interpretation of the Nutcracker last year, was able to catch it then at the Chandler in Randolph, when I heard they would perform it at a location I have been fortunate to visit since childhood, no question. Went down for the 1 pm and managed to jump the line and get a front row seat, one of only four. Saying this being very glad anonymous here so methods not revealed, did get a chance to chat with guitarist Grant Gordy after on his way to see Da Vinci's Ginevra de Benci. What a location for music there in the West Garden Court, always a pleasure at the holidays when the central area is decorated. Admission was free, it being tax payer dollars. Coig this weekend for Celtic Christmas back at Chandler, then Paul Winter Consort's Solstice next week. Mr. Sun has a few more gigs in Wisconsin and Minnesota before they finish their seasonal concert at Nashville. Some of the best acoustic jazz flavored bluegrass you will ever. Probably don't need to tie it in, but Grant played with David Grisman for a while.

    I remeber sitting my buddy down and saying, "get ready dude!" I played him China Cat through the encore....when it was done, he looked at me, and simply said, "fuck man"

    Obeah's tale, anniversary date, and fact that close (lived across the street) high school friend from Chi-town area was at this show has me listening to Hunter Seamon's matrix (on the road now so my copy of DaP 20 not available.) Back around Christmas '81 mailed some tapes to Chris. He replied with tapes and a letter that included him being at the Boulder show - spoiler - it was freaking great. Side note - youngest brother and some friends and I saw the Rosemont show 3 nights earlier. That show had some cool moments - like a Set II To Lay Me Down and a Pearl Harbor Space - but it also marked the end of the Uptown Theatre era in Chicago and I think Boulder (plus Indy) smoked it. My personal feeling was that acoustics in the Rosemont sucked and what we lost was the mighty Uptown Theatre. That same high school friend wrote that he had heard rumors that a final run at the Uptown had been planned but fell through and that the Dead even considered buying the Uptown (latter seems a bit out there but ??). As it turned out the final Uptown concert ever was a Jerry Band show 11/17/81 ~3 weeks before the Rosemont show. That was my first of four Jerry shows, with youngest brother and Bill and Laura - we were in the balcony, it was crazy fun. So back to the point - listening to Boulder - np a ripping China - Rider to end Set I.

    edit - i was mistaken that the 11/17/81 JGB show was the last concert in the Uptown. Zappa played 10 days later, there was also Rolling Stones simulcast from the Rosemont (of all places) in that span. J Geils Band w/ Southside Johnny and Asbury Jukes last show there{?} 12/19/81. A burst frozen water pipe in December '81 took the Uptown off line (so to speak). So my memory of the last days of the Uptown skewed by half baked memory and maybe rumor - but yeah it seems that for some reason the GD couldn't make it work/chose not to and that JGB show was sorta/maybe Jerry's farewell to what was a favorite venue for a few years.

    The Strange Odyssey of 12/9/81

    BITD, the days of USENet, I looked over my list of tapes and realized I was really hurting on '80-'81-'82. I had started trading with some guy in Canada, and I saw on his list that he had a bunch of early 80s boards. So I asked him to select some of the very best. I remember one was the '82 "Raven Space" show; the second escapes me entirely now; and the third was 12/9/81 Boulder, CO.

    Back then, tracking info wasn't what it was today, and in this case it was taking even longer since it wasn't a domestic mailpiece. I kept waiting for the tapes to arrive, but to no avail. Finally one morning a couple of neighborhood kids came to my porch as I was standing there looking at the day's mail delivery, a delivery that once again contained no packages. The kids said something like, "are you looking for your cassettes?" and with a sinking feeling I asked them how they could know that. Well, it came out that their sometime friend, a boy maybe 10-11 years old, had porch-pirated me and had stolen my package!

    So I walked down to his house, one of the first McMansions on our block, and knocked on the door. His parents were sympathetic, and the kid was made to confess and apologize, but for some of the tapes it was too late - he'd found the music uninspiring, apparently, and had set about destroying the tapes by unspooling them and throwing them around. One was actually visible hanging from a nearby utility line.

    The now-unremembered show was one of the casualties. So was tape II of the Raven Space show. I seem to recall that tape I survived with only minor damage (I was able to re-spool it). However, both sets of 12/9/81 were untouched. And what a show!

    There are some good shows from this date - the Fox in '71; Kiel 8 years later; the LA Forum in '89. But this is my go-to show on December 9th. Thanks, Dave, for releasing this one! (And thanks to those kids for ratting out their 'friend')

December 9, 1981; CU Events Center, Boulder, Colorado.

Sort of an under the radar release. A very good and very fun show. Lots of things to find tucked away in there.

Love the reggae style of the fist half of second set in particular.

Just recently procured a July 1978 box. Nice to have all these shows. Guess I'll keep my stand alone Red Rocks.
Currently on the Omaha show. Should have just enough time to finish the show before the TN-AR game.

Now that’s a Box that will fit on a shelf.
But the sweet spot for Box size is as many people have previously said: June 76, Spring 77, July 78.
Just the right size and just the right number of shows.

Not that I’m not hoping for Boxomoxoa this year.

Also drinking a cup of super dark roast Columbian Supremo.
Roasted the beans a week ago.

That St. Paul show was the surprise sleeper in there. And Willie's picnic at Arrowhead is a rip-roarer too for a short one. But you know which one is my favorite. Enjoy!

Starting with something light today. The Big Chill soundtrack. Got Motown?

Onward with Love Over Gold, Dire Straits. I have a lot of cassette tapes but this is the only Denon brand tape I own, an HD6 (type ll) and it sounds amazing. Telegraph Road never sounded better. Easily rivals any Maxell or TDK that isn't metal. So glad I got a restored high end '80s tape deck again in the rack. What a difference.

Just exactly perfect both in its music and the box aesthetic. Every show has the magic. The middle show from Omaha really captured my fancy a good while back in no small part due to Oro Thing 1's Oroboros Tale in which he meets Jerry after Madtown 2/3 (my first show) suggesting the band return to NE and what do you know 5 months later, almost to the day, they're playing Omaha complete with an indoor waterfall!

so 7/5 spinning - np Estimated > Eyes!!

The funny thing is we all think of them playing long extended sets but the short shows seem to concentrate their minds! Think Dick's 33 where they were told by Bill Graham to keep each set to an hour and July 12th '87 where they were on before Dylan joined them

That's a good point - I also think that some of the shorter shows are great. The shows that brought this to my mind were the two sets played on 11/2/69 supporting Janis Joplin. Which, incidentally, sound great on this new vinyl release. Most of the shows in 1968 were shorter too, and the energy level on those goes through the roof.
The point is also made in the Taping Compendium that Fall 1973 shows gained focus by shortening the length from the vast summer shows of that year. Though they are still great too, of course.

Got the CD a few weeks ago but this is only my second listen.
Has acoustic and electric sets, but both fit on a single CD.
So, a short show also.

Oro - right near the beginning of 1970 are Springer's Inn (1/16) and Oregon State (1/17) - they good!

...in the see-through blouse (and no bra, hey it was the '70s) that said Australia on it! Kind of like something you'd see on rescue boat teams. I walked right into her walking in on the stairs and got the biggest smile from her as I worshipped from below. She went to CSU and lived in my dorm. We would try to time our dinner so as to be in line with her, lol. Bobby couldn't help but notice!

I've long wondered what Bob was responding to when he said I'm moving to Australia but truthfully never would have guessed it revolved around a beauty in a see-through blouse that read Australia!! Makes perfect sense now!! Even better that you knew her!!

Pretty sure she was from CO. Tall, like 6'2", and as Lennon said, "you could say she was attractively built". She ended up front and center by the 2nd set and not sure she said anything to Bob but he certainly could not miss her or avert his gaze, lol. The lettering on the gauzy blouse was large and what was beneath it covered some real estate. Before the beginning of the show I literally ran into her from behind as the crowd was pushing their way up the stairs and when the people in front of her stopped everyone behind stacked up like falling dominos. I didn't even know it was her. That's when she turned around and smiled and I was at eye level with her beauty standing one step below. Unforgettable! Couldn't believe it was the dorm fantasy girl smiling at me.

We had exchanged smiles in the chow line at the dorm before but I'm sure I was too shy to go further even after the recognition at Red Rocks. And I was not in classes by summer 1978. Had one frosh class in '75-'76 with her IIRC. I think she was from Fountain, near Colo. Spgs. The dorm had a schedule for meals that involved different wings coming at set times to avoid a crush. We had a regular bong session daily M-F that centered around watching Star Trek at 4PM while doing endless bongs playing Spades or Hearts and then we would go a little earlier than our required time to catch her and her wing-girls in line. Probably said wow these guys reek of Columbian!

I’ve actually heard about 35-40 1970 shows previously, including the official stuff, a few from BC, and many from Doc and POTD etc.
But thanks to y’all I’ll add these to my list along with some other bits I’ve marked down…Not going to try for all at this juncture, but hope to put a dent in the more notable shows from this year…for now! Lol

2-4, 2-6, 3-21a&b, 4-25, 5-14, 6-12&13?, 6-24&25, 6/27-7/3?, 9/17, 18, 19, 20, 10-4, 11-5>8, 11-16, 11-20, 12-23, 12-26…

So hoping for another big grateful year: kick the tires on 1970, all of 85 I’ve not heard, the half dozen or so left from1990, maybe some fall 80 and dip my toe into 1995, and rehash 1975.
Onward!

16th was sweet, and good recording. 17 starts out sounding great but ends up being inconsistent throughout. Decent show though. 18th…? Like much of 70, some shines, some not so good, musically inconsistent too I guess…
Don’t get me wrong, when they do shine, ya need welders googles!

DiP 1 vinyl finally gets to stretch its legs. Perfect pressing so far. No pops, clicks, or wobbles. Already finding stage comments and tunings not in the original CD. I'll have to do an A/B comparison between the CD taken from digital and this new pressing taken direct from the orig. tapes. I doubt if I'll be able to hear much difference. Just curious.
BC - DaP 11, oh that's where that's from. Hadn't looked that one up yet. A very fine cut in Taper's this week. I'm not sure I've heard a more interesting jam with Keith driving the jazz! So good.

Took a while - finally locked in on heart of DaP 11 based on the Taper's Section - He's Gone. Trucking > Other One > Brokedown Palace. Sugar Magnolia.

As I am want to say - OMFG!! The standalone He's Gone!! That freaking Other One!! Into Brokedown??!! with an encore of Unle Johns Johnny B Goode. WOWOWZA

That Samson & Delilah on DiP18 has that same dirt kicking feel. It's the one where Bob's mike isn't working in one of those unexpected beginning of the 2nd set sound issues and Jerry has to improvise for quite a while until they get it working. Someone described Jerry aiming his guitar neck at the roadies and doing a machine gun run at them. Even with the very extended intro Jerry still has great solos undiminished by the unexpected event. Fixing it on the fly!
