    Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from the 1970s, covering an eight year span of 1970 to 1978, and three very distinct eras for the Grateful Dead.

    We'll first make a stop in Honolulu, HI, on 1/23/70, where the seven-piece Grateful Dead were playing their first-ever show in Hawaii. Tom Constanten was a few days away from leaving the band, and the band played two very good shows. From the first night, we have China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Black Peter, Yellow Dog Story, Hard To Handle, Mama Tried, Casey Jones, Dire Wolf, Good Lovin'. Please note that the head of Casey Jones is missing from the master reels.

    Our next selection is from 12/1/73, the middle night of a very good three night run Boston. The first and third nights were highlighted as part of Dick's Picks Vol. 14, but the middle night also contained some good music, including this nice batch of tunes: They Love Each Other, Me and My Uncle, Don't Ease Me In, Me and Bobby McGee, Mississippi Half-Step.

    In early 1978, the Dead started their touring year with the California tour in January, which ended in Eugene, Oregon. A week after the Eugene show, the band hit the road for a short, six show Midwest tour, with shows in Chicago (three shows), Madison, Milwaukee and Cedar Falls. From the third night in Chicago, on 2/1/78, we have the bulk of the first set, featuring Jack Straw, Friend Of The Devil, Mama Tried>Me and My Uncle, Ramble On Rose, Cassidy, Sugaree. For some reason, Sunrise is missing from our board tape, but what is here is excellent.

    '78 Midwest Tour
    What was with the Dead in early '78? Jesus, the Midwest tour is one that could be mentioned among other great tours (but doesn't seem to be, very often). Not to mention the January shows (MacArthur Court!). Thanks for this! (After an early 80's show is released for DaP 7, an early '78 would be a great DaP 8 hehehe)

    Obey their every whim...
    Although I haven't a chance to listen yet (just received DP5- awesome!), this weeks's selection from 12/1/73 contains some of the most entertaining stage banter. I was first turned on to this show several years ago, when it was played on the GD Hour. "Isn't this an organism we have here?" "1-2-3- Lame-out!" The intro jam of Uncle John's in set two features Garcia in peak form for sure. As always, a big thanks to DL for not only this week, but for many months (at least) of top shelf material recently. Whole shows from April of 78, enormous Other One's from the Fall of 72, New Year's Eve 77, Lindley Meadows, whole sets from 89, and on and on. The effort supreme is greatly appreciated.

Was this Nov./Dec. 1973 Boston run at what is now the Orpheum? Or the Wang (what is now the Citi Performing Arts Center)? It is listed as the "Boston Music Hall" ... I have DP 14 and I still could not figure it out. Guess it doesn't matter. anyway...

2/1/78, was a most excellent of days! So, indeed, I would like to toast to this, day of days that are mostly-always ... that way. Dead Heads just have more, most of the time, xo! Then, With-out delay -with a [yellow tail] CABERNET SAUVIGNON Flavors: blackberries, chocolate & vanilla Enjoy: with a Sunday roast, family & friends PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA A toast- To All of Us! May we not boast of our abundance of love, xo! (easier said then heard and read) And again for thirsts sake! And one more for thoughts of Kangaroo's. And For the Taper's Section and it's Master: Thank you for your repeated excellence, may karma rock you in ways you like it best. In the days ahead...drink wine and toast alot.
