At February Mardi Gras shows, the band debuts an impressive array of new songs, including Weir?s ?Eternity? and Garcia?s ?Lazy River Road,? ?Liberty,? and the majestic ?Days Between.? The newly-elected Clinton/Gore administration is Dead-friendly, and most of the band visits the White House during the spring tour. In April, Garcia, Weir, and Welnick sing the national anthem for the SF Giants? opening day. After hugely successful and warmly received summer and fall tours in which crowd control problems seem to have ebbed considerably, the Dead prove to be the #1 touring act in America for the year, selling about 1.7 million tickets. In the fall, merchandising puts out the first Grateful Dead Almanac. Eventually, it will have a circulation of over 100,000. In November, the band releases the first Dick?s Pick, a 1973 Tampa show, establishing another long-running tradition.
