Once again this week, we’ll be covering more than 20 years of the Grateful Dead’s recorded history in the Tapers Section, from 1969 through to 1991, plus a taste of 1967.
We’ll get started this week with a great sequence from 6/8/69 at the Fillmore West, the final night of a four night run at that magnificent venue (they sure did like to play four night stands there…). This jam of He Was A Friend of Mine>China Cat Sunflower>New Potato Caboose includes not only exquisite performances, but also the final version of New Potato Caboose. While not quite 8/24/68’s New Potato (what is?), it is pretty darn good.
Moving up a year to another four night run at the Fillmore West, we have some great material from June of 1970. Our first track is this beautiful acoustic Candyman from 6/4/70. From 6/6/70 we have two jams: Dancing In The Street and the meaty Good Lovin’>Drums>New Orleans>Good Lovin’, a cool piece due to the rare presence of New Orleans. Finally, from 6/7/70, we have a couple of acoustic/electric song, Me and My Uncle, New Speedway Boogie, with the latter always being such a nice addition to the 1970 setlists.
One of the most famous Grateful Dead shows, both due to performance quality and the long-standing availability of excellent soundboards recordings circulating, is 6/10/73 from RFK Stadium in Washington. From this great show, we have this exploratory Bird Song and the quintessential 1973 combination of Eyes of the World>Stella Blue.
We’ll next jump up five years to 6/4/78 in Santa Barbara, with the second encore of Sugar Magnolia, played that night for none other than Uncle Bobo.
June of 1991 found the band on a terrific tour, with Bruce Hornsby along for the ride on piano, vocals and occasionally accordion. From 6/7/91 at Deer Creek in Indiana, here is the second-set opening jam of Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, Truckin’>New Speedway Boogie. We hope you don’t mind two New Speedways in the same week, although this is remarkably different than the 6/7/70 version played above.
Finally this week we have a couple of pieces of music that aren’t necessarily date-appropriate, but just need to be heard. Something we didn’t have time to play a couple of months ago is this rollicking China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider from 4/16/72 in Denmark (NB: in April, we mentioned that the Grateful Dead played only two shows in Denmark in their career, when in fact they played four concert in that country). Another out-of-place song this week is this Morning Dew from 10/22/67 at Winterland. As we’ve previously discussed, there is remarkably little 1967 material in the vault, but due to very popular requests, we wanted to get something out there for you to hear from 1967.
Check back in next week when we’ll play some music spanning another 20 years or more in the band’s recorded history, including selections from 1970, 1976, 1991 and a few other gems. Feel free to write with questions or comments, suggestions or recommendations.

Fantastic, David. This "Bird Song" is an all-time classic.
Now that the new site's mostly up and running, I'll remind you of a question I posed some time back via e-mail: Any chance there might be a way to offer a one-click, download-everything option for each week's stash? I never pick and choose: I want it all. Has anything come of the notion?
Continued thanks to dead.net for the weekly generosity!
I would just like to say
I would just like to say thank you. I sat down this weekend and continued my work of creating audio CDs from the taper's section downloads I have gotten since the site opened this section. As of the end of last week, I have created 54 audio CDs!!! That is one heck of a lot of free music, and it is greatly appreciated!!!Adam

Let Tomorrow Be
Another great week of music!
Thanks so much for doing this. WHile I think many of us have thousands of hours of GD music. This has been a great way to revist those show and seek them out again. I've been having fun putting these all into a playlist on my iPod and just letting it run.
I love this section! Thanks
I love this section! Thanks for expanding my horizons. I just discovered it so I've been making cds of suff from previouse weeks- and I absolutely love the "Here come sunshine" from a couple weeks back ('73). I'm ending up listening to a lot of stuff I wouldn't probably have listened to otherwise.
My favorite Dead is from the 80's-- I'm really a Brent fan. It would be cool if there were some more 80's Dead up.
And cool new website!!!
My favorite part of your website
In it's brief history, this section has turned me on to some great Dead music. I really appreciate the effort to expose these stunning nuggets to all of us who may have not heard them otherwise.
Quick question: Can I re-establish an RSS feed like the previous version had?
taper's treats... Alpine Valley 1987
Could you include some jams from 1987 Alpine Valley when we get toward the end of the month? And possibly a stretch from the 2nd set of the Kingswood show (1987_06_30), I really dug the Good Lovin' they gave us and we all passed around that night... -nathan
Thanks, RalphK!
I am on Firefox, and I'll have to check out that plug-in. Thanks for the tip!
Hmmm
Is there some way to search a song from the tapers-sections? My dad loves the song "The Mighty Quinn" so I wanted to burn him a copy of the Dead on it and I could've sworn I saw it in the section when I was looking through it the other day, but now I can't find it at all.Anyone know if it's in here?
Oh wait-- it's not listed as being here on Clearlight-- does anyone know where I can get a copy?
Much Thanks
Every time I get confused at work I pull this site and smile. What a great way to keep a - live will playing dead.

Can this music be burned to a cd or must it be played on an MP3
Hi! I just found this music and I am so excited! Thank you for it. I am a complete beginner and could sure use some help figuring out how to burn it to a cd so that I can hear it other than sitting at my computer! Is it against the rules to put it on cd? I can't make it work! Thanks for any information about this.

David, since you asked for suggestions......
David, As my request for material that I would like to see posted would be the material from the Video Taping Sessions around 4/20/85. I have the VHS release and have enjoyed it for years. Many moons ago I recorded the audio portion onto a casette tape so I could take it with me. That being long gone I would love to here some more of the song selections from those sessions.
I understand that there may possibly be another expanded remastered DVD version of the "So Far" video in the works. I would love to hear more about that and about what is the hold up with the production/release of this material. Its a rare sight to see video of the Dead during rehearsals, but this material was obviously very well recorded and documented. Maybe in the mean time we could hear some of the selections in this wonderful Tapers Section.
Keep up the great work and thank you for all that you do for us.
Peace Douglas Tunstall
brother who
my brother easu not to many of these around would love to hear some... could someone ask bobby to start playing this again .. smiles.. mic
Thanks David!
Thanks David for all you and Jeffrey have done over the last few years. I think Rhino and the folks now involved have a LONG way to go to come close to what you and Jeffrey envisioned, chose and worked on as projects over the last few years. What a team, you both should be very proud!
great section, David
I am assuming this excellent section will run through November. Thank you.
I've been stuck on 1977 for years now, but the more I listen to spring of 1995, the better it gets. It would be great if you could include some more.
The Mighty Quinn is on the bonus CD of "Postcards of the Hanging" (Vault release). I imagine the bonus CD still comes with it.

Mr. Lemieux
Mr. Lemieux,
You are giving us everything , we want. And I thank YOU, for your hard work and time. For Rhino to make others happy, they must have video, for the others who do not just listen on the way to work everyday. David, you make me happy. Others just love a weekend video, that sends them back to a summer evening. Have fun,
Wally Stine

1969
David: Wonderful! After resisting 1969 for a long time (I always thought the music was a little scary from that era! And sometimes sloppy- but now i get it!), I find myself hungry for that year! Been listening to the Fillmore 3-disc set, and the stuff from June here is wonderful! Wonder when the Download series will be available here? I want the #12! I hope y'all can make the download process Mac-friendly this time.
Thank you so much for the music! June 20th is coming...
