I remember this show for the
I remember this show for the seat I had. I knew a guy in Campbell. We knew the same gal, at different times, and I ended up helping him and her fix up their house, and shared some pitchers with them. He worked at the local Honda dealership, and was Steve Woz'z primary mechanic on his NSX. That summer, he mentioned that he could get G. D. tickets at Shoreline, and wanted to know if I wanted to accompany him on his first time to see The Dead. I said "SURE". The day arrived, and I was rarin' to go. I waited an extra hour at the bar before he showed up in the NSX. I was already pretty hammered and in ill temper, thinking that I had been blown off on the date with the Dead. Nope, here he was, strolling in, looking spiffy. I casually mentioned that the show was about to begin, and we were in Campbell. He ordered a pitcher for us, and sat down to drink, all calm and cool. I pounded down 3 pints in about 3 minutes and insisted that we get going. I have never gotten to Shoreline so fast. We hit 100 mph several times, and wove through any traffic, and smoked to a stop in reserved parking. I went right in, hearing the band playing, and hit the bathroom, listening to one of the first few songs, not recalling how many I had missed. We went in and sat in the reserved Woz seats, and were the only ones there. 2 of us in a space for about 16. I took my chair and placed it so that I could rest my legs on the rail, and kicked back. I was drifting. Not nodding, but people kept squirting me with squirt guns, saying "wake up". I never missed a beat. Then about the time "The Day Between" was playing, I got the jab in the ribs and "Hey man, wanna get goin'?" I was flabbergassed! "What? Are you kidding? We got here late, and you want to leave early?" He replied that he'd seen enough and wanted to beat the traffic and was tired and blah, blah, blah. I responded vociferously. NO FU*KIN' WAY, MAN!". I let him know that if he wanted to leave me there to walk home, or hitch a ride, fine. He thought about it and changed his mind, and suffered through the end of the show. I thought it was a fine show, except that they started without us. And that was our last date. I don't think that my friend caught the feelin'. Now as I look back on it, I think he's probably more of a "Kenny G. kind of guy". And I'd pass on those tix. Travelin' at the speed o' light.......
