There was Drums in the first set
This was my first show. I was right up front. In the first set, Jerry was so tierd that he went
and sat down at the side of the stage in a chair
he was smoking a cigatette and I saw it fall out of
his hand, I think he fell asleep,
and the drummers did a drum solo in the first
set, probably the only time ever.
They woke him up and they finished the set.
They came out for the second set and it was a totally
different band, they opened with Scarlet in to Fire
on the mountain, with such power....
It was so hot at tight right up in front of the stage...
That was back in the days where the people up front
were getting horribly smashed... Wish Bobby would have
asked people to take a step back, take a step back,
at that show.
It was somewhere between Scarlet and Fire on the Mountain
where I passed out and and when I woke up my roomate
was dragging me out from the front of the stage back
a few rows and put me in a chair. Don't remember much of the
rest of the show....

I was there?
Drove over with friends from SEMO - I can remember clearly very little - after all, it was 1979 and I was 21 - bad combination! I do remember the sound did not rival their best -probable had something to do with the venue, no? Adios
"From day to day, just lettin' it ride,
You get so far away from how it feels inside,
You can't let go, 'cause you're afraid to fall,
But the day may come when you can't feel at all."
Sang a "duet" with Donna Jean
Skipped classes for a day to wait on line for tickets. I remember the sound was not so hot and the band's energy was pretty low. I do remember howling along with Donna while she was doing the "ooooh ahhhhh" vocals at the end of Scarlet Begonias. I was shocked when she looked at me sort of indignantly and then cracked up. I had no idea she could hear me! I enjoyed the show even though some of my friends did not.
"Home Before Daylight"
For a little insight into Jerry being "so tired" during the first set, check out the story on page 201 of Steve Parish's book. Apparently, Jerry jokingly snatched (and swallowed) four Valium from Rock Scully 30 minutes before showtime. . . Parish also describes how they fired up Garcia for set 2.
