At Salt Lake City in February, the band revives, brilliantly, Dylan?s ?Visions of Johanna,? one of the classic special moments. The spring tour is uneventful, and is followed smoothly by West Coast May shows. The summer tour begins in Highgate, Vermont, with many thousand ticketless people causing problems. Down the line, two Dead Heads are struck by lightning in Washington. At Deer Creek, not only do thousands break into the show but people inside assist them by vandalizing the fence. The band sees it all and is freaked.

The Acid Tests crest in size at the three-day (January 21-23) Trips Festival at Longshoreman?s Hall in San Francisco, where thousands of people experience Rimbaud?s ?systematic derangement of the senses.?  With their new soundman and backer, Owsley Stanley, the Dead settle for some months in Los Angeles to woodshed, then return home in June to find a thriving rock scene centered on Bill Graham?s Fillmore Auditorium and Chet Helms?
