    Oops- forgot to mention
This was a "free" show - I ended up in the park and FOUNDthis show going on - still not sure WHY the Starship were the headliners - tho' I love Tuna and the Airplane stuff - I think this was the first time I felt connected to something larger than myself!

Great show! I photographed this sitting on a friend's shoulders from frontish and center. It was obvios to all that this was tremendous vantage point. As I was photographing from my friends shoulders and bopping to the music, Garcia pointed me out to Weir and they both pointed directly at me, laughed and smiled, Weir giving out one of his great "Hey Now" kicks towards me as he punctuated the music. SNAP! It was a really great photo that I really miss. Garcia's Travis Bean white guitar and Weir's light brown cordouroy pants as well as their laughting faces are indelible in my memory from that kicking frame. People wanted to buy the photos. Many heads who saw me taking pictures at that show asked for my number and some kept calling me about them for years. The negatives and all the prints I had from this really cool show were stolen from me within months of the show. It was also the first time I heard "Fire on the Mountain" the way the song just bumped along and slowly unveiled itself to me was wonderful! I didn't really like Starship (but they were good) on that day but grew to like their songs over the years. They had this huge painted truck and tight businessy music that just came off looking too slick (no pun intended) compared to the laid back bouncy organic synergy of the Dead. God I loved that show!

I wrote earlier that the first time I'd ever heard "Fire on the Mountain" was at this show and I deemed to remember that clearly, how ever I noticed that the song did not appear on the set lists for the show and wrote to deadnet to point this out. Then I found actual downloads of this show and Fire was not in the show at all! So I was Dead wrong all these years and now I have to erase and rewrite my clear memories of the show. Oh well, I guess if you can remember the Seventies, you weren't there- or was that the sixties, I don't remember. So, am I a butterfly dreaming I'm Chuang Tsu or am I Chuang Tsu dreaming I am a butterfly?

I "ran away from home to join the circus!" - landed in San Fran - woke up one day and heard this buzz on the street - ended up dropping some windowpane and sitting in a tree in GG Park - Frisbees were flying and so was I! I don't remember what was played - but the VIBE was something I will never forget.
