wall of sound
Was a Senior at San Diego State when I attended this show. Was a big Grateful Dead fan by this time and had been following the Band's split from Warner Bros., the foray into Grateful Dead Records, and the Wall of Sound. The stack of speakers was awesome to see, even in a venue as large as the Sports Arena. I was just off the floor, stage center. The sound was unbelievable. The whole place seemed to pulsate.
The new "Wake of the Flood" material got a good workout and "Eyes of the World" was a highlight.
May have been one of the early shows w/Keith and Donna Godchaux. A weird moment occurred towards the end of the show as a guy at the front jumped on the stage, approached Donna Jean, and appeared to be leading her off stage. The Band continued on as some of the Roadie Crew grabbed the guy and led him away. Night was also memorable for the lack of an encore, which I always attributed to the incident.
The San Diego press gave lousy reviews for a show I quite enjoyed.
location
saw at least two here... saw the one where bobby jumped off the stage, after most of the crowd had filed out, and into a fracas between some cops and some roadies and/or locals, some kind of drug bust... my buddy and I saw the whole thing as we hung out just off the floor... saw the "steal your fractal" tour here as well. sound baffle curtains were hung and arena was cut down by about a third. probably the best sound I've experienced by a group who prided themselves on their live sound... remember telling my buddy, "it's like Club Dead"...
