My memory, oh where have you gone? I didn't hear Ratdog do my first Mission in the Rain on THEIR last tour (I guess that I was thinking of my first Cream Puff War, which I heard the last time I saw Ratdog on their last tour), I heard it at Lupo's in Providence-- the last Ratdog tour while I was still living in Rhode Island. Or something like that. I do remember spending some time at the show surrounded by a group of college hippie chicks from RISD, and feeling very old as I watched countless guys trying to hit on one or another of them... So who's singing "Mission?" Bob or JK?

    what no other venue had,
Monterey had. That was being in the landing path of Monterey Airport and every 20 minutes or so a jet would burst over the the top of the arena descending to the runway. Friday night we were facing stage left with the jets coming at us. Saturday night, facing stage right, the jets descending towards the airport. Roars from the party goers go up for certain lyrics. Roars go up for great solos, roars of approval go up for incredible jams. I often see most of a show with my eyes closed. The audience would roar at inexplicable times and then you realized a jet had just flashed low overhead. How good were these shows? I'm 63 and I'm amazed. My girl says thats cuz it doesn't take alot to make me happy (I'm good with that :-). When my eyes were open I'd be looking all around and as far as I could see there were people weaving and bobbing and shaking and having a good ol' time. Did I mention more smiles than you will see anywhere? It was two great nights of music and people coming together to celebrate something very few understand. As I have been told on numerous occasions, "the Grateful Dead? I don't get it." "won't you come out to play?"

It's still not up on archive as of this afternoon. It's hard to make a meaningful analysis of this tour without hearing every show (or being at all of them). I can already say that I am upbeat about the shows at least through Vegas.

Who did the singing? Mission is one of those favorites of mine, never heard it live until I heard Bobby sing it during the last (I think) Ratdog tour. I went from "hard to imagine anyone but Jerry" to "not bad, Bob, I'm impressed" after the first chorus. Gonzo, you still on the road or just reporting setlists?

looked to be in order here in Monterey. Least that was my first reaction when I saw the sawdust spread all over the arena floor. Nice touch, Maybe had something to do with all the previous days rain.Thought the first set drug a little and was somewhat short. Was getting worried it might be kinda of a flat night. It wasn't. Was workin' up a lather shortly into the second set. They are so incredibly good. A pleasure and a joy to behold.....they're a band beyond description, like yaweh's favorite choir! Really looking forward to tonights performance

I don't know about that. It would be like calling a certain british band The Rolling Stones if either Mick Jagger or Keith Richards were to leave it. When Jerry Garcia left, the Grateful Dead was over. What the remaining members of that band do in the future can't be called that and this is largely why they have not toured under that name since 1995. ... has been retired to honor Jerry Garcia and the entity that toured for 30 years with 5 core members. Stardom and fame were brought to those who took up the burden of the dead beings still wandering in the bardo (the space between death and rebirth). Those beings still have power to influence from that state. When Phil opened up the dictionary on that fateful day in 1965 and opened up to that entry and put his finger on "Grateful Dead" he sealed the deal. Whether the name is used exactly as it is or not, there will always be musicians who are more or less doing wandering expired beings a favor and having that favor returned more than 100 fold. No wonder the GD did so well on the days of Halloween and celestial events such as solstice. Whether or not any of the above is true, it is usual and customary to retire the name of any long-running entity when it ceases to exist in a fundamental way from what it was. It's a sign of respect. Carrying the burden of the dead, allowing them to experience vicarious thrills through the still living is a wonderful and awesome burden. The Grateful Dead pulled it off with style.

for what its worth, which may not be much, but here it is. I feel that the name Grateful Dead should be retired. Jerry Garcia is a musician of the importance of Mozart, Bach or Coltrane. This music would not exist without him. The Grateful Dead does not exist without him. However, the music he was such an integral part of is too important to be relegated to the past. It needs to continue. Like all great art it has too much to say to let it die. My 2 favorite names of the post Garcia era have been The Other Ones and Furthur (these were coincidentally my favorite post Jerry incarnations of the music). The Other Ones denoted that the remaining band members were still here and the music was still vital. Furthur denotes that the music is being carried on into the future. These names, both of which have historical significance to the scene, indicate that Jerry is no longer physically with us but his genius lives on. Long live Jerry and long live the music!

As hard as it was Zepplin did the right thing when John Bohnam left us, they disbanded Zep. John Bohnam was the engine for that band with his hard bluesy drumming which could not be duplicated. Unlike The Who who have been on 2 or 3 farwell tours, it kinda leaves a bad taste in your mouth when they call it quits then show up next year. I fell blessed with the shows that I saw with Jerry and I think Billy, Mickey, Phil and Bobby have done the right thing with The Other Ones, Furthur and Billy and Mickeys drum projects. We can all be thankful they all just did'nt Fade Away.......

If any of you going to Angels Camp & camping, there's RV hookups @ the Sonora County fairgrounds. It's a nice place & not too far from Angels Camp. Looks like from Furthur's website, you'd need a car to bring into Mt.Aire. If anyone knows how to post this on philzone, please do so.....have fun

Hey Mary, Can we have an all inclusive Furthur~Festivals Topic in that forum? I looked and found a few things on gathering but not much. Since they are playing a bunch of them, how about a topic that is all inclusive with Furthur Fest, All Good, Gathering of the Vibes, Nateva, and what ever other fests they happen to hop on this summer. I've always liked festivals because of the diversity factor, many good bands I love, and the family fun camping time. _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? But it would be nice to not have to make a 3000 mile road trip and have to take a week or 2 off work to go. The music "festivals" here are lame to say the least and never include camping. Then we can take the whole family along for all the festivals...Good plan. The only other idea I had was to win the lottery and I promised everyone here that if I did, I would buy a Leer Jet and Tour Bus strictly for the Dead.net family. Then we could pick everyone up across the country/world, and tour. hahaha~I let you know how that works out when I'm 90. _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? Why not call them the Grateful Dead ??? My opinion is if you would do that....there's always the possibility of Too Many People showing up for the shows again... We do not need the Gatecrashers around again!! i think they are doing the right thing by staying under the radar of national attention!

I am curious to know if the girls are still gonna be singing with Furthur this summer???? I thought they added so much to the music, the harmonies were right on. Sometimes, the band had a JGB element to it, when they would bust out an After Midnight or Dear Prudence, w/ John and the girls singing behind him.. Gonna be sad if they wont be tagging along for this one.. Its almost like the Grateful Dead when Mickey Hart left the band, they were a much more basic unit, at least until Keith arrived. But, i have no doubts that the band can pull its own.. They are so awesome on so many levels.... They really need to release a Double Live CD w/ the Gratest Moments of the Winter Tour. So much good stuff to choose from....

I really enjoy the girlz Sunshine and Zoe....I think they add just enough to cover up the semi fainted voices we have from just the boyz just getting older. And they compliment the youngster quite nicely as well. I'm pretty darn sure they are helping with the summer tour, I do know I haven't heard differently. Anyone else heard anything? I mean besides a baby or a family disaster, I think they are gonna be there. _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? The setlist was sweet and it answered some questions. Compliments of the Philzone and the poster was first posted by Canyon (not me) and the setlist is compliments of Rob Scalcione (Rscalcione) both cool zoners. Rehearsal Poster Furthur Rehearsal Sessions The Palm Ballroom San Rafael, CA Mon. May 24, 2010 8:30pm - 10:50pm Happy Birthday JC Juanis Shakedown Street > Good Lovin' Mississippi Half Step > Brown Eyed Women Cumberland Blues Althea Looks Like Rain The Wheel > Reuben & Cerise > Uncle John's Band Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain Back up singers: Sunshine Garcia Becker & also Jeff Pehrson who is from the duo Box Set. So to answer someones question from before....so far it looks like Jeff Pehrson is gonna replace Zoe Ellis for now (don't know for sure but I think she's having a baby). John K. sung a ton of the songs too, and from what I hear Joe Russo played really, really well solo! _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? I wouldn't think that the organizers of a ferstival would have any say on taping. Plus why would they care? To allow taping or not should be up to the band. I've never had much love for that bureaucratic town, too conservative for my tastes. They don't understand what it means to give it away... gotta account for it in the budget! No, seriously, I've played a few good shows there and the cultural community is pretty alive in Ottawa, but the vibe of the town has always creeped me out. They get all that extra funding for being the capital and all...

The goverment or "The Man" as we say does not run, manage or control this festival. It is run by a seperate private group that started the festival in 1994. Altough this festival gets funding from the goverment cause it is a huge tourisim draw and some acts cost a lot of money to play. Dylan played a couple of years ago and I heard that his cost was $500,000. The last couple of years they have also put on free shows in our downtown market with some big names, one good free show this year will be Taj Mahal.

I'm taking the family (my wife and I, and 2 boys: 9 and 12) to the Lowell, MA show later this month and am wondering what to expect in the parking lot. I went to 70 or 80 shows between '79 and the passing of Jerry, and to me the parking lot was always almost as enjoyable as the concert. But I've since been on "hiatus", and I don't know what the current scene is like. I remember that, as it got into the 90's, things were degenerating, with lots of yahoos and nitrous and whatnot. The plan is to show up 2 or 3 hours early,do some tailgating, and enjoy the people. This is an early, 6 o'clock show, outdoors, general admission at a minor league ball park and I'm guessing that it will be relatively family friendly, but am looking for comments and reassurance. Also. my 12 year old would like to set up a little table and try to hawk some really cool wallets that he has been making out of duct tape. Will he be hassled by the powers that be? What do you all think?

Ok, I am going to try and avoid the superlatives, of which there are so many that I have trouble coming up with enough good things to say. Without a doubt, the band is just getting more and more in "the groove". Three days of insanely great music - if you haven't heard about that late night set after the so-called day one "sound check" (more like sound wreck my head, build it back, and then topple it again just for the fun of it) then allow me to elaborate. Start with Viola Lee, then segue into a couple of tunes, then back to Viola, but wait... switch out the bass and lead guitars for a different duo to come back into Viola, going from Phil and Jackie Green to Jackie taking up the bass with Bobby playing guitar, then back to Viola after a couple more songs until Jorma and Jack come out to play with Bob and close it after a few more great Hot Tuna standards with the final Viola verse. Just insane. If anyone knows where I can find the tape of that set then please hit me up... timlake at homegrownvideo dot com. Looks like just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back IN!!! Summer tour, here I come. Just counting my blessings that I am fortunate enough to be able to take my laptop out and keep my day job...
