Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have some Grateful Dead music from 1978, 1983, and 1988.
Our first selection this week is the incredibly hot Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain from 9/2/78 at Giants Stadium, a jam that many people consider the best Scarlet>Fire of 1978, up there with 2/5/78. This show was just two weeks before Egypt, and the day after this show, much of the band and crew split for Egypt.
Next is the opening of 8/29/83 at Silva Hall in Eugene, OR, the first of six performances by the Grateful Dead at the Hult Center (three in 1983, three in 1984). From this great run’s opening, we have Shakedown Street ; New Minglewood Blues ; Friend Of The Devil ; Hell In A Bucket.
Lastly this week is the hot ending to the first night of a four night at Alpine on 6/19/88, featuring Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > I Need A Miracle > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away, Knockin' On Heaven's Door. While not common, in 1988 Dear Mr. Fantasy took the place of the Jerry ballad in the post-Drums sequence of some Dead shows, and as much as a Black Peter/Wharf Rat/Stella Blue/Morning Dew was missed at these shows, it was a nice surprise when this happened.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
