I don't have a DVD burner but can read & copy the flac DVDs
on my computer, which is what I have done with several 'flac only' offerings.. Computer does recognize DVDs & somehow I was able to even listen to them a couple weeks ago (can't figure it out right now how I did that, however). Hope to convert those DVDs soon (esp. my Dr. John vine) as I do have several waiting. Lopezz sent me some programs to help with my converting some of the flac DVDs that I have gotten from here (and elsewhere). I hope to get to this process, possibly this weekend if I can get computer time from wife (work) and son (school). I recognize the cost issue as far as sending stuff out. I feel like it is fair with all the wonderful & transportive music I am getting. But I will figure it out. Even with my flintsonean skill level. ;o} marye, what do I do without any hair to pull out? Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.

to say that having had to learn flac conversion for the vine currently in my possession, I tore my hair for about half an hour (much of that devoted to downloading a free program that didn't work, but the shareware SoundConverter seems to work fine and was worth the 14 bucks) and after that it was all pretty clear sailing. And my new computer (sigh...) has a good DVD drive. I do agree that the lack of a DVD drive is a more formidable obstacle for many folks than the conversion itself.

can sound fantastic Witness the mindboggling 24 Bit versions of the of the fabulous April 71 shows that are appearing these days (the latest is 4-26-71). The main drawbacks are that the files are MUCH bigger and you cannot convert them to WAV (without losing all the audio benefits). And of course the audio source must be of good quality to be be able to make a difference. To listen you have two main choices Play through a 24 Sound Card or Digital Audio Converter. Your PC is unlikely to have such a thing internally. I have an external 24 Bit box that sits between my computer and my hi-fi. Its not the best you can get but it does the job. Burn to an Audio DVD or Video DVD and play through a suitable player. You can find out much more about entering the world of 24 bit by reading this http://24bit.turtleside.com/ and through this discussion http://www.shnflac.net/forum.php?action=viewtopic&topicid=10231 WOW as I write I see that a new 24 Bit Matrix of 74-6-23 Jai Alai Fronton has just appeared.

Than being flac-less. I don't mean this is in a bad way or anything but I do understand if one doesn't have a DVD burner and usually that is how flac/shn are delivered is on dvd. But what I don't understand is why the flacless cannot convert flac/shn to wav. Conversion is just too easy to do for it to be a problem and limitation. My point is if we want to reduce postage costs (yes I do) the best thing is flac/shn on dvd but it makes more sense to me to put flac/shn on CD's rather than on dvd's instead of putting wav onto dvd if our goal is to look out for our friends with limitations. Because I just don't think flac-less should be a limitation. Anyways, just my opinion, in the end I don't mind how we do this vining stuff, I'm just glad it is here for us all to enjoy no matter what are media preferences :-) "Here's my half a dollar if you dare .. double twist when you hit the air. I think that sounds like a good idea. That way the flacless would get the text document with the set and lineage info . of course if one wanted to do a multi show vine it would have to be on muti DVD`s. and that would put an end to converting and extra postage. I actualy passed on a few vines that got converted becuz of the extra weight .

The Who Springfield, MA 12-14-1975 master audience recording taped by Dan Lampinski. I would love a copy if it's out there.

Guys, my computer crashed the other day and I am writing this from a friend's computer (mine is in the shop, supposedly can be repaired, circuit problem). I had that JT show on my list of shows to get, and I think there is another JT show he recorded, either from 75 or 77. Re: the Who, I would check that website we have discussed Lopezz; I bet it is there. And yeah, a second Lampinsky vine will be needed. JT, Supertramp, the Who, and there are a few other good ones I am sure.

Does anybody have 9-23-76 Duke University? One of only seventeen times (according to Deadbase) the Boys played Morning Dew and Wharf Rat. Nice overall set list with a lot of B for A. I have no idea as to the quality of the playing, but I love 76. "That path is for, your steps alone."

I have sbd.backus.14687, but am hesitant to trade or vine it as I grade the sound quality as only B+. I suggest going to archive and seeing if a better version circulates.

I'm gonna comment here because I don't want to piss off BJ or dissuade any non-viners from purchasing it. I am not excited about this release. Just as I have not been excited about most of the releases in the last couple of years. I think the early show is good (3-3.5 out of 5 stars) and the late show very good (4 to 4.5 out of 5). But both already circulate as A SBDs. Can someone who signed up for my 70 vine back me up there on the sound quality, if not the performance quality as well? I WANT to give the Dead some money. I feel that I owe them. But I don't want them to act like I owe them. And that's how many of the recent releases make me feel. This isn't a bad release. And if the show didn't circulate it may even be a good release. But because it already circulates as an A SBD, what's the point? I know, I'm jaded, and the more shows you get, the more jaded you get. BTW, I purchased 30 of the 36 DP's, both Winterland box sets, the 69 Fillmore box, plus many other official releases. I give the Dead money. But now, it has to be for something I really want. A show that doesn't circulate, or a very good or great show that circulates only in subpar sound quality.

I'm sorry you feel jaded, dude. Your reasoning is sound, but... just think of those '77's that came out ... they were all A boards, too, but after the powers that be had their way with them they became absolute pearls!!! I'm really excited about the three disc format - I know that what is available for the 5/15/70 is eight discs (w/ NRPS), but maybe this will be a harbinger for shows that are three discs. We are, but a few, missing the absolute aural richness of these remasters because the HDCD format requires equipment we don't have. I'd like to hear a handful of the early Dick's Picks remastered with todays technology - especially 5/02/70!!! BTW, I can't wait to sample your next Pink Floyd vine - it looks killer. I just d/l'd, extracted, and converted to WAV the Who show. Then I logged in here and see that unclejon already snagged it. Unclejon, if you want to take the lead on a Lampinski AUD part 2 vine, with the 76 Jethro Tull show and the Who show, plus some others, feel free. There is a 75 Lou Reed show that I have been unable to download, and 76 Skynyrd, 74 Marshall Tucker, 76 Boston (whcih would be really cool but the band had sound problems and I don't know how it affected the recording), a 75 Jethro Tull, and a 76 and 77 Supertramp that I haven't tried to download yet. Those are the ones that I think look interesting, but there are others you may find so, and who knows if any others will be unleashed (a 79 Supertramp, Breakfast tour, would be awesome). Let me know if you need any help. Oh, and I got my computer back and it seems to be fine. There was a problem with the circuit board.

I am out of town until next week and didn't want to coop the Lampinski movement from you. It'd take me another week or so to d/l anymore of the shows as I will be slammed at work when I return. I'd be happy to work on it with you though. If you have any of the other shows you mentioned let me know and we can put it together. I'll PM you and we can coordinate? I don’t know how they choose what to release, but 5-15-70 seems a fair choice to me. I am not sure we can expect them to second-guess what everyone already owns or analyse what is out there. What is often frustrating is not knowing exactly what is and is not in the Vault and so not knowing what they could have released (9/23/76 apparently is not in the vault unfortunately). Many of us have been howling for full shows and we have 3 or 4 discs with almost two full shows (albeit chopped up and mixed up). What tempts me every time a new RT comes out is the sound quality. I ended up buying an HDCD compatible player last year thanks to EBay. Maybe the Dead have shares in Microsoft (who own the HDCD patent). There is also some special feeling about having the CD set on the shelf, even thought I don’t care much for the RT packaging. Maybe instead of getting stressed about the official releases that duplicate circulating shows we should instead be grateful that there is often a free alternative for those short of $$. Plus you get an extra Deep Elem Blues that is not on any of the circulating recordings or on any of the published setlists that I have seen. How can you resist THAT? ;-)

RT vol2 #4 and I don't understand why they chop it all up and jumble the song order - like parts of May 26th spliced in with parts of May 27th. That doesn't make sense to me but whatever. I do like the last couple releases- 11-15-71 and 12-28-79 that were complete shows with the songs in the correct order. I personally would rather compromise a bit of sound qaulity in order to get the show unaltered. That's just me though... Like I have said before, I support the band by seeing them live and I do that a lot!! :-) "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. I want a double dose in any case" ... I am posting here because I know someone who reads these threads can probably help out. I recently received a vine and cannot locate it in the Forum to figure out who to mail it to next. (just a thought, if we write the vine on the outside of the envelope it might avoid these types of scenarios). anyway, the vine I currently have contains the following shows: 4-23-84 6-26-84 6-30-84 each show is two CD-Rs of FLAC files. it was mailed to me from a fellow viner in Alaska. if anyone knows which vine this let me know, I will look it up and get it mailed out ASAP! thanks

On some message boards, the "last log-in" date is shown beside the poster screen name. If we could see when some of these folks last logged in, that would help in figuring out if someone is reliable or not. I've got some '95 soundboards that I may plan to vine in the next month. I am a little hesitant because they are not in flac format. They guy who sent them to me left 1 second gaps between tracks.

includes friends such as; Nick Lowe, Jerry Scheff, Austin DelLeone, James Burton, Scott Mathews, then later add in Charles Brown, Kim Wilson, Steve Straus, and later add Jerry Garcia & Pete Sears and then later Commander Cody, Sammy Hagar, Annie Simpson, Mitch Woods jump in and then Bob Weir decides to jump in. And it turns into a big jam session. This has 27 songs on 2 CDs. From Elvis playing solo (in first four songs) to adding the wide variety of friends that showed up to play with him. Can a request be made of Lemieux or some other to index exactly what is in the vault? Since, apparently, so much of it is missing it shouldn't be that hard to do and it would seem to help everybody out a lot in figuring out what to request/buy.

I'll post a 4 show "best of" within the next week. I still have to listen to 2 more (4/15 and 16). I don't have the last show (4/17) of the tour or the late April and May California shows, but the latter aren't really part of the tour anyways. So far, I think 3/31, 4/5 and 4/6 are the best. I'm looking forward to listening to the final 2. 4/15 has a great set list (2 of Brent's best, Blow Away and I Will Take You Home, as well as Franklin's Tower, China/Rider, Playing, Terrapin and if that is not enough Dew). This will be like most of my other "best of" vines, meaning there will be 1 FLAC DVD, I will convert and burn to CD 1 show, and the first 3 people will each need to convert and burn 1 show.
