    Another time of my life
My first GD concert was in Utica NY 3-22-73, and I have always regarded that as one of the very peak experiences I've ever had. I live on the east coast, but fly out to Denver annually to visit my son. I went later than usual this year because I saw there were tickets available for Furthur at Red Rocks on 9-26. Sometimes it has seemed like, at 62, peak experiences were to be no more - not true! I had another time of my life last Sunday! Red Rocks is beyond a perfect place for a concert; it's what the gods would arrange if they were promoting a show - a natural bowl surrounded by towering rock monoliths with a view out to Denver and beyond. The sound is great, and the benches are arranged so that one can sit down (the air is a little thin out there) or have room to stand up and boogie. That night a golden, just-past-full moon rose right over Denver just as the band was flowing into St. Stephen. And the crowd is so joyous and together and just having a great time. The show itself was way better than I had hoped. Opening with Golden Road into Cassidy, I had tears in my eyes as I danced. 37 years fell away. Throwing Stones got very intense, and the set ended with a Big Railroad Blues that was just a headlong rush. The second set began with Samson & D, which I've been digging lately for some reason, followed by Mr. Fantasy, one of my favorite alltime songs. St. Stephen was a highlight for me since I've long identified with that song, and Furthur really hit it hard. They cranked into an intense Wheel into a joyous full length Sugar Mag. Touch of Grey and Brokedown Palace were enchor. Palace was especially poignant on the bands last night here. They played hard, tight and right, charging ahead and turning on a dime. Bob and Phil were both in fine voice, and if I hear any bitching about JK on lead guitar and vocals you're gonna have to fight me. The keyboard and drumming are also awesome. It was such a thrill to be able to share that with my son, who has very wide ranging and adventurous taste in music, but was totally into the Grateful Dead universe thanks to Furthur at Red Rocks. All my life the Grateful Dead have meant so much to me. I know this isn't them, but Phil and Bob and the band are keeping that music, that spirit, that vibe alive and more - they're moving it...Furthur! ~ I'll meet you some morning in the sweet by and by

That's really cool you guys had a grate time celebrating your anniversay in Colorado with our favorite band. I'm going out on a limb and saying that you are NOT too old to make another road trip to Iowa =) My wife has been hinting at us heading to Iowa (and beyond). I just checked, there are some really good seats left ... hmmmm ... don't tempt me I told her ... "The dire wolf collects his due while the boys sing round the fire"

Yes, Marye, we did get some wonderul shows, and then some.
First off, there is NO place like Red Rocks (take a look at their site http://www.redrocksonline.com/pages/concerts/detail.asp?id=3970 ) to get a peek at their peak. Temps were high 70's during the day (except at those higher elevations;o} ) and low 50's for the shows. And we got to see the (harvest) moon rising over Denver as we waited for Furthur to start playing was just icing on the cake. A tremendous combination of natural visuals and Furthur aural delights that night. I enjoyed this version of post Dead offerings quite a bit. Phil is the mystro and really runs the show. He had numerous incidents of fantasic bass runs especially during Friday's Scarlet Begonias through that densely packed group of songs until Fire on the Mountain. And he was raining Phil bombs mercilously on us during Saturday's the Other One. Friday, Bob had pulled out that pink guitar he used in the '80s and the sound was way too trebley and faint for the Rocks, but then on Saturday he switched back to another guitar and it all sounded much better. Shimmering rhthym chops cascading up to us in the crowd. Jeff Chimenti on keys is a star, a monster, a force to be reconded with, and more than willing to assert himself and his vision so very well. That was welcome especially with his tickling the ivorys on the baby grand on Friday's Eyes and then pounding that Hammond on Death Don't have No Mercy. John Kadlecik's guitar playing included has some tasty chops but the added treat was his voice. Great vocals every time he sang. Much of his guitar tone is reminiscent of Garcia, but not really a copy in any way. I must rave about Joe Russo who takes a back seat to no one with his drumming abilities. He is a beast! Having one drummer also made Futher's transitions quite a bit quicker than sometimes the duo drummers can achieve. Like back in the 60's Grateful Dead with just Billy, the band could 'turn on a dime' and they usually did. Actually these shows were the best that I have ever heard Phil's voice. Really, and those 'back-up/harmony singers Jeff Pehrson & Sunshine Becker are truly are a fantastic addition to this group,... wraping their sweet voices around the other singer's voices. They added much to those harmonys and their contribution on the acappella finish to UJB was one of the nicest I have heard. Friday was a joy and then Saturday was an extravaganza, and embarrasment of riches with much jamming, riffing, and fantastic arrangements- the whole enchilata: the complete Terrapin Suite > the Eleven > Unbroken Chain(!) > Darkstar > Stella Blue> The Other One shook the Rocks. And I agree with JSFC, that first half with the Help > Slip > Franklins right out of the gate. No rules anymore for when they play what. The old stuff is getting great treatment esp. that Viola Lee Blues triple decker club sandwich. Wasn't it tasty, Jack? Mary and I were out to Colorado as our 30th anniversary gift to one another. We went out into the mountains each day, the Aspens have turn a spanking yellow, contrasted against the bright green of the Evergreens, with an occasional Oak a burning red orange that jumps up to you. When we went up to drive on the highest highway in the USA, those vistas were outstanding and then we toured back to some familar spots we have been to 32 years earlier on the first visit to Red Rocks (er, and then remember the 1979 'Fire on the Mountain story' -from Stories Told Round the Campfire thread?.. no, then never mind). Those shows were head shakin', laugh out loud, falling down, crying, unbefuckinliveable. We had to be back to work on Monday so we left on Sunday. In the old days, I couldn't have left without attending that next Sunday show. But I left that one for another Deadhead to relish. Furthur really filled my cup with those shows. And the Rocks sure rocked last weekend. Red Rocks Setlists Friday Set 1 Truckin' > New Speedway Boogie > Cosmic Charlie > West LA Fadeaway > Deep Elem Blues Friend of the Devil > Ashes and Glass Casey Jones Set 2 Scarlet Begonias > Big Bad Blues > Mountains of the Moon > Estimated Prophet > Eyes of the World > Fire on the Mountain Death Don't Have No Mercy Uncle John's Band > Not Fade Away E: Just Like Tom Thumb Blues Saturday Set 1 Help on the Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower Alabama Get Away Sittin' on top of the World > High on a Mountain > Viola Lee Blues > Bertha > Violoa Lee Blues (instrumental) > Cumberland Blues > Violoa Lee Blues Set 2 Mountain Song > I Know You Rider > Terrapin Station Suite (complete) > The Eleven > Unbroken Chain> Dark Star > Stella Blue > The Other One E:One More Saturday Night I wonder if I am too old for an Iowa road trip in November ;o} The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

Sorry I missed you Critter. So for starters the whole "mountain" theme for the weekend was brilliant! Plus I love the new songs and I think they pretty much played them all. Then for Friday you just cannot beat the Scarlet>Big bad blues>Mnts of the moon>Prophet>Eyes>Fire, holy sheet that was good. But what really got me that night was the Death Don't Have No Mercy, Bobby nailed it and nailed it hard! I still get goosebumps thinking of it. Who says he can't sing? Baloney! For Saturday, well this was a night I personally will never forget, I had the privilege to meet Phil and hang out on the stage, that right there was a dream come true on many levels. This was the single best Furthur show I have seen. Not a dull moment the whole night, I can't even pick a moment that was the best of the night because every song they played was off the hook. But going in and out of Viola Lee and the Terrapin Suite made me feel like the "old days" again. Just spectacular! For Sunday the He's Gone left the whole place in tears, I could barely hold them back! I was just tickled to hear Big RR Blues, man it was awesome. The only negative musically was the Days Between, sorry but it kind of deflated the rest of the night and weekend for me but over all this was one of the best weekends of my life. We got tons of them...my favorite being the new Bobby tune Big Bad Blues. Thanks to all who helped make our Dead.netter feel welcome and home when we came out there. Did everyone get searched like that or were you just the lucky one? It's good to know if it was systematic or a random security jerk. Don't get me wrong there should be security but they should stick to searching for weapons and glass bottles - you know, things that can hurt people. So sorry to hear your sad tale, especially considering these were the same 'security' so totally unprepared on Friday, and let all those without tickets into the campground for free. They really let the ball drop, and then I suppose needed to make up for it on Sunday? I read on the local Angels Camp on-line newspaper that the cops were really bent out of shape about the lack of security, and they must have read them the riot act, which led to your sad incident with a surely over-zealous worker at the gate. We went in and out numerous time over the weekend, and they never did more than squeeze my backpack looking for glass bottles. Over 60 people were arrested at this event. I'll never go there again.

FURTHUR SUMMER TOUR 2010 beginning tomorrow in Rochester. Summer's here! Safe travels and good trips to all those heading to the Eastern shows. Hope to meet some of you at Rochester and ArtPark. A Canadian contingent will be on our way. If you meet a Canuck, please be kind...you know we had to cross the border. And you know we'll return the favour if you make it up to Ottawa. (~);-)

Last time it was "SHAKEDOWN" but am not sure if it will be the same tomorrow. I would go to kbco.com and register with them - its simple. Then tomorrow right as tickets go on sale go to kbco.com and it will give you the password then it directs you to the TM website, plug in the password and you are set. Good luck! It's just too bad that the cops/city has to be so lame about not letting them play there!Furthur Cancels July 5th show July 5th Shelburne Vermont Show CANCELLED To All Of Our Fans Who’ve Purchased Tickets To Our July 5 Show in Shelburne, VT: After days of meetings to address and alleviate last minute concerns being expressed by State and Local Authorities, Furthur is very disappointed to learn that today, the local authorities, citing an inability to deal with an expected influx of ticketless fans, traffic concerns, and other issues, have revoked the approved permits for the show and have decided to cancel Furthur's concert at Vermont's Shelburne Museum on July 5. There are a lot of Deadheads in the Burlington area and in Vermont. I'm one of them. When I first heard that Furthur was going to play at the Shelburne Museum I was delighted and confused at the same time. Delighted because it was going to be a small, intimate venue and confused because, given the popularity of the band, this was NOT a good choice to play. Unfortunately, I think this is a hangover from the 94-95 Highgate shows. Out of control crowds and tons and tons of trash all over the place did not endear the Grateful Dead to the locals. I think they failed to take into account the fact that it's 15 years later and a sold out show does not mean lunacy because we all got a lot older and tamer -- well, most of us anyway. Vermont is a very beautiful place and nobody wants to see it spoiled. They don't want anymore new people moving in because "the flat-landers" could gain control of the political process and change things. It's a hillbilly mentality. It was the hippies moving back to the land in the 70s that has given Vermont it's juicy quality (artists, artisans, craftspeople, meditation centers etc., etc.). On behalf of all the Deadheads in VT I would like to apologize for stupid, backwards-looking townies and staties who took it upon themselves to ruin for everyone. This would have been one of the more friendly and scenic stops on the tour and Burlington is a jewel of a city. We'll see if they shut down Rhyth Devils in Burlington in August. Please don't label all Vermonters Vermonsters. The idiots are few and far between.

What a way to kick off Summer Tour!!! Rochester is a beautiful small town, with a gorgeous park, and in the middle of Highland Park there is a beautiful bowl that fits 6000 perfectly. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, they provided us with rolling grassy parkland to tailgate in all night, and there was NO SEARCH upon entry. Beautiful people, most mature and kind, grooved steadily to some sick jams... Here Comes Sunshine, Stranger, Feelin Alright, Cosmic Charlie, New Potato Caboose... Thank you FURTHUR for a cookin show and to the city of Rochester for putting on a dignified family picnic. Show 'em how it's done! See you at ArtPark!!!!!!! (~);)

That is how it should be! Just got back from 3 nights at red rocks, no searches, no busts, no overwhelming security presence. I mean I already knew this but you can pretty much do whatever you want in there and amazingly no one abuses that. So it all works out for both sides. Furthur is going to be out of this world good when they show up there in September. Just 3 short months away!! "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. "I sense that the state people scared the local people into believinghell was about to descend upon them. The Higher Ground people should have known better all along that this was the wrong venue, but whoever waited until the last moment to raise their concerns seems to me to be a little nasty. I know, that, in the past, the band has worked to mitigate their impact, perhaps the 'authorities' were not interested in anything but not bringing this crowd to their burg." This is from a head with his ear close to the ground in Burlington. I think he and I are pretty much in accord on this...

Sweet way to end the holidaze. As well they said they are hoping to bring Furthur to the area at an indoor site. Let's hope. Hey Al et al., As for wishes, hard to say. That first show was a beauty and I don't wanna push my luck. Wishing for a Terrapin suite, though they've just played it recently... Help, Let it Grow, Eyes, same thing. They haven't played Candyman or Til the Morning Comes yet, both songs I'd love to hear live. I'm hoping they'll breakout Crazy Fingers at ArtPark. I love grooving to the funk so Music Never Stopped would be welcome, I'm also a Shakedown fanatic... Easy Wind, Alligator... heck I'll take anything! As mentioned before, CanHead convergence will likely be at one of the picnic shelters. Look for the maple leaf stealie flag. We'll be jammin and warming up the park. Hope to see you there!

Can't wait for the show tomorrow night at Ottawa's Bluesfest. I'll still miss the hell out of Jerry... Got into the dead in the mid 80's, saw 12 shows. Peace

Is there a place to find the lyrics of original furthur stuff that is being played? I was listening to XM last week and missed the introduction but I thought the song was "wooly bully" or something that sounded like that. I listened to the song as there was a line about a "buffalo" or something like that! Does anyone know what i am talking about. I know furthur played a couple of "new songs" during their April tour and I dont know if this was an old dead tune or something new from furthur! Just wondering????? And no......it is not the wooly bully song from back in the day!

...the new Hunter tune that Furthur is doing, I think. You might want to check Hunter websites to see if he has lyrics posted, assuming he is the author.

ArtPark was a doozie with lots of new tunes being broken out: Sitting on Top of the World, Operator, Crazy Fingers, West LA, TLEO, Women Smart, Bird Song, Hard to Handle, Mason's... many new tunes added yet expertly played. Hoping the rest of you are enjoying the tour so far. For those hearing shows after the break, you are in for a treat! Here's the song list thus far...Peace, K ------------------------------------------------ 06/25/2010 – 07/11/2010 After Midnight (07/02) (07/09) Alabama Getaway (07/07) All New Minglewood Blues (06/30) Alligator (07/03) (07/11) Althea (07/03) (07/10) And We Bid You Goodnight (06/25) (07/04) Ashes & Glass (07/08) Attics Of My Life (06/25) (07/09) Bertha (06/25) (06/30) (07/07) Big Railroad Blues (07/09) Big River (07/08) Bird Song (07/08) Black Peter (06/29) Black Throated Wind (06/26) Blues For Allah (06/27) (07/11) Born Cross-Eyed (06/25) (07/03) Box Of Rain (06/27) (07/05) Breathe (06/25) Breathe Reprise (07/05) Brokedown Palace (06/26) (07/11) Brown Eyed Women (07/09) (07/02) Candyman (07/05) Casey Jones (07/04) (07/07) Cassidy (06/29) (07/10) Caution (Do Not Step On Tracks) (06/26) (07/07) Celebration (07/04) (07/09) China Cat Sunflower (06/26) (06/30) (07/05) (07/10) China Doll (07/05) Cold Rain and Snow (07/04) Colors Of The Rain (06/30) (07/05) (07/09) Comes A Time (07/02) Corrina (07/10) Cosmic Charlie (06/25) (07/08) Crazy Fingers (07/08) Cream Puff War (07/03) Cryptical Envelopment (06/27) (07/08) Cumberland Blues (06/25) (07/04) (07/09) Dancin in the Streets (06/29) Dark Star (06/26) (07/03) (07/08) Days Between (07/04) (07/10) Deal (06/30) (07/08) Dear Mr. Fantasy (06/27) (07/04) (07/10) Dear Prudence (07/08) Death Don't Have No Mercy (06/25) (07/05) Dire Wolf (07/07) Doin' That Rag (06/30) (07/08) Don't Ease Me In (07/07) Dupree's Diamond Blues (06/29) Easy Wind (06/29) Estimated Prophet (06/29) (07/09) Eyes Of The World (06/27) (07/04) (07/10) Feel Like A Stranger (06/25) (07/11) Feelin' Alright (06/25) (07/03) Fire On the Mountain (06/27) (06/30) (07/05) (07/09) Franklin's Tower (06/27) (07/04) (07/10) Friend Of The Devil (06/30) Gimme Some Lovin' (06/29) Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad (06/25) (07/04) Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion) (06/27) (07/10) Good Lovin' (06/27) Greatest Story Ever Told (06/29) Hard To Handle (07/08) Hell In A Bucket (07/02) (07/07) Help On The Way (06/27) (07/04) (07/07) (07/10) Here Comes Sunshine (06/25) (07/10) He's Gone (06/29) High Time (06/26) I Fought The Law (07/07) I Know You Rider (06/26) (06/30) (07/05) (07/10) I Need A Miracle (07/07) In The Midnight Hour (07/02) (07/11) It Must Have Been The Roses (07/09) Jack Straw (06/26) (07/04) (07/10) Johnny B. Good Golly! They was kickin' it up in Canada! Seems to be where they peaked on the summer tour. I'm wondering about ramblin'up to the Polo Fields this August but they seem to be hitting and missing and I'd hate to make the rip for a mediocre show... What about it Bob & Phil & JK? You up for the SF Parks Department or what?? Anna Banana History's Page will be neatly carved in stone The future's here, we are it, we are on our own!

How was the rest of the festival? One of the most diverse line ups I have ever seen.. "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. I want a double dose in any case" ... "You got to hear my supplication. Got to hear me now. A little bolt of inspiration"
