SIRIUS XM’s Grateful Dead Channel continues the tradition of its annual “Jerry Week,” a series of special programming honoring legendary Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia with music, archival interviews and rarely heard concerts. “Jerry Week” will launch on the anniversary of Garcia’s birthday, August 1, and will end on the anniversary of his death, August 9. During “Jerry Week,” listeners will hear seven Jerry Garcia solo concerts, both electric and acoustic, as well as recorded songs from his various side projects.
Listeners will also hear the vigil held for Garcia on the 10th anniversary of his death in 1995, featuring tributes from Garcia’s family, bandmates and close friends. The vigil will air on Wednesday, August 4 at 3:00 pm ET.
Additionally, Garcia’s former wife and longtime companion, Carolyn “Mountain Girl” Garcia, will host a two-hour special guest DJ session on Tuesday, August 3 at 3:00 pm ET. She’ll share personal stories and memories of the legendary music icon.
Grateful Dead archivist and SIRIUS XM host David Lemieux will also share with listeners his personal memory of the first time he witnessed Jerry on stage (March 26, 1987 in Hartford, CT) and play back the concert in its entirety on Friday, August 6 at 3:00 pm ET.
After “Jerry Week,” The Grateful Dead Channel’s homage to Jerry Garcia will continue with coverage of the San Francisco Giants’ “Jerry Garcia Tribute Night,” including on-the-scene reports and more.
