not a new word to us but do you know what it means? ex. The Deadheads live in a cryptical envelopment. Anyone else have an example? (despite the distinct possibility that Steve is just goofin' with us...) I think one thing that affects how often I hear the word is the Silicon Valley thing (I used to edit a computer magazine years ago, and a lot of my pals are techies). Between the engineers and the PRoids, the word gets used a lot, as in "ubiquitous connectivity," "ubiquitous wireless," etc. It's practically a buzzword in those circles, which probably has to do with why it's so commonplace here.

marye is right. A well-put together concise sentence can be much more clever than a long, flowery one, full of big words, that makes no sense. I missspelled " a lot" in an earlier post. Two teeny tiny words, not "alot" like I wrote. THAT is more heinous than not having stumbled across "ubiquitous". ************************************************************** Don't part with your illusions. no stupidity involved if you've never had occasion to cross paths with the word, which, as you suspected earlier, is more or less synonymous with "everywhere," except it's an adjective. (Why yes, I AM an English major...) Sentence: "The Dead were in town for a run of shows, and tie-dye was ubiquitous."

I got an interesting PM here. Sounds like one of those "Nigerian letter" scams to me. Or someone else with a sob story... has this been circulating much? What is up with the postage to canada? on wednesday (june 27) i went to order a cd and it said my postage would be $15 dollars to send me the cd...i emailed about it and was told to wait a few days as the postage rate was being adjusted...i went back today saturday (june 30) and saw the postage only went down to $11. how is this justified? i order from many websites from the U.S much smaller than dead.net and am usually only charged around $2.25 for postage per cd.....why is the dead so high? why are canadian fans being punished...our dollars are almost even right now....and as for speed another website i ordered from in arizona had my cd's to me in a week....so whats up dead.net are your rates ever gonna come down to reality? i'm very disappointed right now...as i wanted to place an order for three from the vault to get the extra book but will not be ripped off on postage...sorry.

Darrin67, I don't think it's a case of Canadian fans being punished. There was some weirdness with the Store and out-of-the-States postage, and I'm thinking you're seeing an artifact of that. I'll send your concern up to our Store folks, and hopefully you'll hear back soon. If not, please let me know by PM or email at deadnetmods@gmail.com thanks much for you patience, and I'm really sorry it's so frustrating!

How's everyone's experience with the new on-line store's "service"? I got my first delivery from the new look on-line store this morning. Australia Post must have been up early! I was pleasantly suprised that USPS delivery to Australia had only taken 3 weeks. I was pissed off that the actual postage cost shown on the box was just USD 13.00 yet the store had seen fit to charge me USD 45.00! So, it cost another $32 for someone to pull the CDs off a shelf, put them in the box, tape it up AND STILL GET IT F***ING WRONG! I open the box up expecting to find 4 CDs and a Dick's Dex. What do I get: Just 3 CDs! No "Three From the Vault"! No "Dick's Dex"! So, I've had to ring them from the other side of the world (yet again) to try and sort it out. The girl apologised, blamed "a Fowl up in the shipping department" (What! They employ chickens in shipping?) and promised to send it out to me with a Dick's Dex as soon as possible. From her bored tone, I can only surmise that this is a regular occurence. I then sent them a polite email explaining the problem and voicing my concerns yet again. But, these guys have never responded to any of my emails in the past, so I won't hold my breath. In short, I'm not a happy wannabe deadhead today!

this has been this way from the beginning (back in the mists of time, six weeks ago...), and is likely to continue unless some fundamental software limitations disappear. There is wild variation from one system to another on this issue: DNC, for example, doesn't let you start topics, whereas Ratdog.net does. For the time being at least, this is the way things work here. That said, if there's something you want started, feel free to post about it or send izzie or me a message; we're usually fairly responsive about it. Thanks!

Did everyone have to re-register? Is there a way that some of us can keep our old user names? (I have a good one, but I know someone complaining...)Can we move some of the funner discussions over from Dead Net Central like the Seinfeld Discussion?

and from what I can tell they're mostly using the same names, though a few reported problems. All the old Dead.net forums are defunct. We're exploring the possibility of restoring them as a read-only archive, but we're not there yet. Feel free to discuss Seinfeld in the TV topic here. Meanwhile, DNC is alive and well also, right here, and you'll see quite a few of us over there too.

Hello! I love the website and the content so far. It takes a bit of getting used to but it is a very good site. I was wondering why regular members cannot post their own topics? There should be a general board where members can post what they want to talk about. People should be able to make their own topics on every board too. Just a suggestion. I am a member on a few forums and this is the only one where admins make the topics .

I have suggested a fair amount of topics to the moderators and they have responded and put them up in any time from several minutes to several hours (at the longest). They are on the site quite often. Give it a try. Thank you marye and izzie. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

Really, we've been known to drop the ball sometimes, but we TRY to be responsive... DNC (DeadNet Central) is one place where regular users can't start topics, and it seems to rock right along. For now at least, it's a chaos management issue, mostly, and the software does not support having one area where people can start topics and another where they can't. All of which said, if you want a topic on something, speak up! In the What Else Should We Be Talking About topic, a PM to izzie or me, anything along those lines usually works. We check in at various times during the day and evening, most of the time.

If the program you are running only allows staff to make topics, maybe try making a new member group that all members are that allow the making of topics. If you do this so you can monitor the content better, you should think about making a mod for each board. Just a suggestion.

joshpbs - we've been around the block a few times on this, and we keep ending up in the same place. Chaos-management is the order of the day around here. I often wonder what the board would look like if everyone could create their own topics at will. What kinds of topics would there be? My personal fear is a million all-about-me bloggy type topics, which is fine in some places, but doesn't seem to fit the vibe around here. Was there a conversation you were wanting to have that you don't see a place where it'd fit? Please, drop us a note, or an email, or say something right here, and we'll see what we can do to accomodate you. It's been working pretty well so far, and the chaos, even in the wee hours of the beginning of the new site, has been pretty manageable. Things are getting better as the kinks are getting worked out, and I'm excited about how the site is shaping up!

It seems to be working fine the way it is in my opinion. If people make their own topics it might end up like other boards where some folks deem it fit to mention their every bowel movement. Then the level of quality discussion gets buried under mountains of dross. It's a sad thing when u go to the effort of posting a thoughtful post in a topic that disappears under an avalanche of twitter regarding the latest rubbish on tv or silly circle jerks stroking each others egos with fluffy topic posts. Just my two cents... :) Are you kind?

Does the Grateful dead run their own store or do they farm their work to another company. I recently placed an order as a birthday present to myself for DP's 29 and the order was apparently lost on the way to UPS. I would like to try again, I just wanted to make sure my credit card info was being safely used.

The Dead have licensed their musical work to Rhino Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group. That's who operates this site, and also the online Store. So while there may be the occasional snafu with an order, the Store itself is on the up and up and your credit card info should be safe!

Has anyone in the GD organization read the phenomenal amount of complaints in this week's Tapers Section? I don't think anyone is happy about the downloads suddenly becoming streaming only. No advance notice to us fans. What gives?

Yes someone from the administration please read all the fan mail in the taper section. Does anyone in your organization have a college degree or business experience? What's the percentage of people who actually respond that are pissed? You were creating very exciting weekly discussions on dead music; people were visiting the site and spending money. Now you've pissed us all off again I might add. Good strategy. Piss off the people who would buy something from you. Oh wait you haven't released anything, well the 12-31-76 was nice but the polished vault releases were poor choices. You put out the 73 box set or more E72 we will buy it and come back and maybe forgive and forget. What's the plan with the vault you purchased? You going to sit around and polish the tapes and release starbucks crap or put out some music. I mean real music; get someone who knows a good release not that 2-19-71 BS we already have.

Hi Sunshine,I for one am at present going to continue to come to this site because I get to hear from and talk to lots of other Deadheads. There is Rhino and there is us. They have provided a tool that we can use to communicate with and I know many of us have really enjoyed this and our renewed community here has been a source of inspiration and joy for me and others. If it doesn't work out, we need to start our own website, for and by the Deadheads and get a Divorce from the corporate/business side of the Dead. Hal Do I contradict myself? So I wrote to Rhino: "To: Dr Rhino Subject: "new" grateful dead tapers section Hey, how about trucking on over to the Rhino operated Grateful Dead site and checking out all of the comments about the new tapers section policy - streaming only, no downloading. We fans are all pretty ticked off by what we see as a surprise (and senseless) move. Especially those of us who have paid wads of cash for all Grateful Dead product, even the pedestrian recent Vault 3 release. CD sales have drastically declined in past years, and this has given many of us the incentive to stop buying any and all Rhino product. (And I was just about to buy the new Doors remasters and highly anticipated any upcoming Cure deluxe editions. Oh yeah, and that fantastic Rhino Handmade Little Richard set - care to buy it back from me?) Call me a former Rhino fan, A. Black" And here's their reply: "Dear Friend, Thanks for your recent input regarding dead.net. We truly appreciate your ongoing interest and support. The Dead.net Team" Not exactly the response I expected. I think a monkey might have typed it.

izzie,I'm curious as to what you expected when you suggested we use the feedback button. Did you know then that there would be no response? Did you know then that there would be no perceptable effect at all? Did you believe then, and/or do you believe now, that our feedback will have any impact on decision making at Rhino? I know this may sound as if I'm being confrontational, but please believe that is not my intent. I'm just trying to understand. Perhaps I have unrealistic expectations. It wouldn't be the first time. Actually, I was expecting what I received. A pat note thanking me for my interest and support. It would have been nice, however, to have gotten a short response detailing the reason for the change at the site. Just a couple of sentences. That's all. Not too much to ask.

this is pretty hard on me too, and if I seemed to snark off, I apologize. Being upset because you didn't get a Feedback response with any details, discussion of the change or other personalization seems a little fetched to me. My hunch (and that's all it is you know) is that the folks who'd be reading those Feedbacks this week are kinda swamped right now. I do think that using the Feedback button is the most direct way to get your point across. I will most likely continue to think that, and to encourage the use of the Feedback button. and I will continue, as a user of this site too, to wait for some word about what's going on. In the mean time, there is a bunch of new content that I'm trying to enjoy!

I know a lot of work went into this site, but it seems awkward. First, you can't click on the last post of a thread. YOu have to open the thread then go to the last page then scroll down. Also you don't need the first post on each page. It also seems to be lacking structure for the main menu. The introductions should be at the top, then right below it "All Arond this world" and have some discription for what the topic is. Then have a group of "Personal Dead Head" stuff for family and dogs and jobs, instead of having everything all mixed up at the top. Perhaps you should be able to see all the sub topics on one page, then show the last post to click on, like other forums? I'm sorry but this isn't very user friendly at all and I don't think it's going to get much use. I'm not going to click three times and scroll down to read the last post, or search a long cryptic list like this either. thanks anyhow!

let's just say we are aware of most of this, some of it's actually getting worked on, some of it is being taken under advisement, and some of it can't be fixed. The last-post thing is something I would call a matter of screaming urgency, especially in topics with hundreds of responses. It's a work in progress, for sure, so thanks for your comments.
