Grateful Dead

Just ordered Hofheinz on vinyl today. Can't go wrong with 1972, I have Europe 72 box and it's unbelievable the amount of good music.Haven't listened to vinyl in 30 years but had a couple hundred records sitting around. Wife bought me turntable a year ago. Went to first RSD last April and spent a shit load. I collected mostly Jazz for years and then started hanging around Dead.net. Missed Fillmore Box but purchased most every box , Road Trips and Dave's Picks since then. I have nice audio equipment for CD's, but set up small listening room for vinyl. I have been selling lots of Jazz to fund my vinyl. I have Keystone on Cd and very enjoyable and thinking on vinyl. I thought Jerry was very underrated from the first time I saw Dead in 1968. I also look forward to 2/27/69. I like that period of the Dead with Pen Pig. I saw them a couple of times in the 68/69 time frame and never understood while they didn't appeal to more folks. My Hofheinz 72 vinyl should be here by the 31st- got it for a steal off of Barnes and Noble. Can't wait to drop the needle on that one. Daverock, you are right on about DP8; it's got a different sound/feel than the CD/Digital- the whole thing is just beautiful, but that Cryptical>Drums>TOO> hell, all the way through is just some of my favorite music. Love Cosmic Charlie too! Can't say enough about this one. Get em while you can. Dave, what's in the box?

Just ordered-these releases on vinyl are REALLY good! So much to get into listening to DP8 on vinyl. The biggest hitters from this show, for me, were always the Other One, Dancing in the Street and Viola Lee Blues -but so much else is good too- Good Lovin' and Morning Dew-the jam at the end - struck me as being really powerful this afternoon.

Yes, I guess the perfect mix is rare. Just recently I was listening a lot to the Download Series vol. 4 bonus material (Philly 6/21/76) and thinking the mix was perfect. Particularly, the lovely ~25 min PITB jam. Every instrument just perfectly clear and in perfect balance (especially with good headphones). It's a great recording to hear the different styles of Billy and Mickey's drumming. I don't know of another recording where the two drummers are so clearly separated into different channels. Maybe that separation is often the case, but I never noticed it so clearly before. I'll always prefer Billy solo, but the addition of Mickey with his "marching band" style makes for some fascinating jams. Freaking Keith's electric piano is just gorgeous - man he had the magic touch!

The recording was pitch corrected and normalized using Sound Forge. Track boundary errors were also fixed.

One of the first things I notice about any of these shows that get released is how the mix sounds. I just listened to the Cobo '76 release from 30 trips. Phil is way up and you can really hear what he's doing. Its great. But Keith is totally out of the mix for the first half of the first set. This morning I started the Dave's Pick from '76 at the Orpheum. Bobby is almost absent and the drums are too low, but Phil Jerry and Keith are loud. It's rare that the mix is just exactly perfect. One of the things I love about collecting shows is that these differences in the mix allow for different listening experiences, and a new (and completely unintended) appreciation for what any given member of the band is doing at any given time. As an aside to this, I think that for 30 trips we got a lot of shows that are great shows, but have sonic flaws, or mix issues, or aud patches that prevented them from becoming more mainstream releases. TPTB probably suspected someone willing to make that large of a purchase would be more understanding of the various recording challenges and vagaries of history that occurred between the individual show and the ultimate delivery of the finished product upmteen years later.

Did you get the Hofheinz on vinyl or CD? Its so worth it, Ive only got the CD at the moment but looking into the vinyl. The Keystone box on vinyl is also on the radar, as i already have the cd set. Its a nice presentation of some amazing tunes! Cant wait for 2/27/69 RSD!

This now offers the most complete source available to date. China Rider through part of The Other One is provided by shnid 1822, the rest of the show is a new source.
