I agree Stuman. Vista sucks. Lets hope Windows 7 will be better now that we have all paid to debug Vista for them. It may be worth avoiding the built in burner and instead use a separate (and free) burning programme such as Burn4Free

First thing , no offence to vist users but umm vista sucks . thats just my opinion of course. From time to time discs burned with vista are not compatible with xp systmes . so here is what my wife has to do everytime she burns a disc for me . " First go to my computer - click on open it will say "burn a disc" disc title she has to leave blank - just leave the date there or it will not burn correctly - there is a "show formating options" with an arrow button , click on it then click -mastered- then drag and drop - then click burn to disc. " Now i dunno if all vista systmes are like this but thats how my wife has to do it . I hope this helps .. Take care and I hope everyone has a super nice day !! Stu ..

Ok, I'll ring in on the debate...
Like many here I remember the days of analog and the introduction to digital. I will say after being immersed in digital since the mid 80's and up until about a year ago, I've made the swtich back to analog format. What I mean is I prefer analog for many reasons. Of course, I don't have all these shows on cassette , reels and LP anymore; I have my share of CD's, DATs, DVDs and HD's, but I now employ a complete analog system. I use a Dynaco ST-70 tube amp and a Dynaco PAS-2 tube preamp. I also use my Revox A-77 reel to reel, Thorens TD-125 mk II turntable with the Shure SME 3009 R2 tone arm, and I've got a Yamaha KX-630 tape deck. I've also got a Sony DAT ZA5ES. I'm using a assortment of speakers from Bose 301 series II mid 80's, Altec late 70's bookshelfs, and finally getting some Klipsch La Scalla's from mid 80's. I use a regular commericial Sony CD player but use a "cheap" but effective digital to analog converter that uses a Burr Brown PCM-1716 chip. I use the digital out from the CD player into the DA converter...so there is only one conversion to analog. What I'm saying is this: old debate of digital is compressed anyway in comparison to a nice master reel, well pressed LP. Of course, digital get's better when the sample rate is higher and the resolution increases. However, I still will contend after years of using digital professionally as a studio engineer and as a musician has it's advantages greatly, but I still rather fancy the sound of analog better. As for the archive , it's simply that a resource library of digital material. One thing for sure is that digital is THE way for mass producing and distributing music. However, just last year the greatest increase in sales was in vinyl records that are being pressed by re-issues of older recordings or new releases by artists who relish analog formats. by the way, you can still get the digital SBD stuff via stream if you really want to work at it you get a digital s/pdif output from your computer via the USB - take that feed and go digital into a either another HD or DAT - then you can input that into some editing software splice the gaps, it won't be bit for bit, but it will be marginal digital quality... For GD shows you can only do this for Audience recordings. Soundboards may only be streamed. Go for example to http://www.archive.org/details/gd1975-06-17.aud.unknown.87560.flac16 Scroll down the page to the heading Individual Files. You will see a whole table of files and formats. The first column is headed FLAC. Click on each file to DL it. Tedious but it works. If you DL the Down'em all plug in for Firefox you can DL all the FLACs in one go and save a lot of bother. Other Artists let you DL FLACs of Soundboards, including David Gans http://www.archive.org/details/DG20030420.flac16

You said we can download flac from the archives site ? that one is still a mystery to me . maybe I`m doing something wrong there . And yes we should purchase some offical releases when we can , and I do that when my credit card allows me to do so ..

Perhaps it is better not to think of The Archive as a trading site, but as a permanent online library. It is like a massive stored music collection that belongs to everyone. So downloading a file as an MP3 from the Archive is like making an MP3 from your own losslessly stored music collection. So long as the FLAC/SHN files remain permanently on the Archive in unaltered state, then anyone can always go back there and guarantee to get the best possible version. It is a matter of honesty and trust that people do not upload files to the Archive that have a misrepresented lineage. And there are people out there who will soon detect an MP3 generation in a file by looking at the frequency range. By withdrawing permission for making Soundboards downloadable from the Archive the Dead helped create all this muddle over formats etc. If we all knew that the best quality shows were permanently stored and available 24/7 on our behalf in the best available (ideally lossless) format, then many of these discussions would not be taking place and the trading and torrenting sites we use might not exist in their current forms. But what then would we all have to talk about? Of course the Dead had reasons for doing what they did. There is the issue of intellectual property of their works (important to any artist) and, naturally, money (Blair Jackson has reported here that the Archive virtually killed off sales of the later Dicks Picks releases). So now it is a bit harder and more confusing to get all the shows we want as easily as we want, but it is not really that much hassle. And we should not forget just what an act of tolerance and generosity it is that this site tolerates open trading of shows that are not officially released. One way of saying thanks is to try to buy at least some of the official releases. It would be interesting to know how the sales of the these are holding up, given that fact that, despite the Archive restrictions, most of the shows are still quite easy to obtain.

    WAV has loss too
I recentley been listening to a show in flac format via Foobar 2K. I then converted that show to WAV so i could burn it to disc , well it sounds way different to me ..the high`s and lows are cut down and it dos`nt have that punch you in the face feel to it anymore . I`m glad i save everything in flac mode .. Now I have been working in the mechanical services industry all my life ie, cars, trucks, small engines ,motor cycles, so I have a pretty good ear for sound . I can hear a bolt rattling loose on my Harley when i`m going down the road at 80 mph. plus I did own a small electronics repair shop for a little bit ( that was more just a hobby actually ) so I`m familliar with osciloscopes and how sound waves look and sound like .I built speach prossesors for cb radios that compressed the highs to make cb raidios sound like they had more power then they actually did , by increasing the sound modulation.. I`m suprised I can hear like that at my age , lol .. So with the help of CB and Rick I discovered the foobar programand nothing sounds as good as shn/flac , not wav not mp3 not any of the popular formats.. Now getting back to the LL web site , if it is not permited to seed from a mp3 converted to flac then why is there a link to the archives site for a some of those shows ? I mean anyone can create a flac file . I have a tape to pc converting program so i can archive my personal tapes to my pc then burn to disc. now with that progran and that tape deck I can record any streaming audio then send it back through my antique EQ then back into my pc make needed changes , create the text document , use traders little helper to create the md5 checksum and then create the flac files . And the end product is somthing that sounds better then the original audio .. I know there was somthing else i wanted to say but i can`t remember it now .. Anyway , I hope everyone has a most excelent day !!

    No, wav files are lossless
But they are not compressed. And you can copy an mp3 from one folder to another and not lose any information, It's just in editing software. Of course when the mp3 was originaly made it lost the info on the high and low end of the song to make it smaller. But you can copy an mp3 to another computer or disc as an mp3 and it remains the same file. If you want to see some generation loss try this. Convert some mp3's to wav and burn cd with them. Then take that cd and convert the wav files back to mp3 and compare to the original mp3s.

Check sbd new hanno 20168 on archive and let me know if the sound is any good. I have that source but haven't converted it, assuming it is the same as my WAV source, which I grade as AUD C for set 1 and SBD B/B+ for set 2, which means it is just about unlistenable. Also maustin, if you want, you can figure out which Sept-Nov 72 have not been vined, or which ones died long ago, and I can do a supplemental fall 72 vine. I have most of the SBDs at the very least. I know one of the Waterbury shows wasn't on the original Sept 72 vine. Not sure which one, 9/23 or 9/24. Also, it may not have included the full 9/16/72 show. I have sbd.cotsman.9247 (about half the show AUD, half SBD) for that one. You can be first if you want to do this. I don't know how long the Oct and Nov 72 vines lasted.

9/3/72 is not on the September 72 vine as presently constituted. Good intentions pave the way to hell, or to varying degrees of confusion. I gave a partial re-seed of the 9/72 vine when it died, using CDRs only. The shows are listed in my post on that vine. 9/3 was not included, but both Waterbury shows were. I believe 9/16 was complete, but much was an audience recording. The Dark Star was a good soundboard. If a new September vine is to be attempted, I can contribute if it helps. Steve

Somestimes vines overlap, and that can be a good thing. I just stumbled on something this weekend while listening to my copy of 5/5/77 New Haven, CT. This was vined on a CDR in the "1977-05-05 May 1977 East Coast Vine" and on a DVD (flac) in the "1977 Lossless Vine: Part 2." I got both vines but I was only listening to the CDR copy from the 'East Coast Vine." Set 1 Tenn Jed had a 4 second drop-out dead air at the 1 minute mark (rich man step on my poor head..), and I think I heard another drop-out later in the song. Bertha had a minor pop glitch towards the middle-end of the song. I had my cell phone laying next to this CDR for a short time, and I thought the magnetic field had erased portions of the song. I don't think so. I went and checked the betty board version on the flac DVD "1977 Lossless Vine: Part 2." There were 4 DVDs, and this show in on DVD#1. Wow! This is a better source, and there is no drop-out in Tenn Jed. Tenn Jed is complete on this source. So I ditched the other CDRs and re-burned the betty board source. You might wanna check if you want the best source.

We may never see a complete quality recording of this 3 set afternoon on 9/3/72. Owsley was running the board, I believe. First set indeed is a low quality audience with stops between songs.2nd set Bertha is missing a channel (vocals) for awhile. 3rd set seems to be the only set of the show with a decent recording. Check Dicks Picks 36 for a taste! I do have the complete show as described above with multi-sourced/multi-generational history. Did One More Saturday Night end this show?

I love that William Blake quote. (sorry if i'm slow to navigate the technology here. i'd honestly rather be writing cursive and sharing that. OK that's the new topic -- hands -- things of beauty created by HANDS. lately lots of virtual art/realities have been created in cyberspace, but if/when that shuts down, will people still be able to weave, knit, sew, sow, reap, harvest and ferment their own food, clothes? oh yeah, make and play musical instruments?) What do you do when you're NOT on the internet? With your hands? To get into flow? To make yourself happy? To create beauty?

If everybody who came into the Vineyard had a good heart (like the vast majority of us) and didn't just disappear with a boatload of vines, it would work just fine. Unfortunately, there has been a recent influx of selfish folks that have caused problems. I for one wouldn't want too much structure. Peace, "That path is for, your steps alone."

Received 10 DVDs full of JGB 76 this week. I'm definitely not gonna vine the whole thing, but I am willing to do 1 DVD + with other's help WAV CD's, total of 5 or 6 shows at a time. I would only vine the shows I think are very good shows or better and of A- or better sound quality. So I have to listen to them first. But I am willing to vine them as I go, and don't have to listen to the entire year before starting the first vine. I would try not to include shows that have already been vined (I'm not converting and listening to shows I already have in A/A- sound quality). Post here if there is interest. Also, I posted in one of the Pink Floyd vine threads about a possible PF part 3 vine. I think 1 person expressed interest. Are others interested? It would be 1 DVD with WAV files too. I have a bunch of GREAT earlier stuff (post-Syd but pre-Dark Side), plus more good Animals and Wall era.

Sounds like people are interested in both. I will work on the PF this weekend, and the JGB once I listen to enough shows that I see fit to include. So far I have listened to 1/9, 1/27, 1/28 and 2/13, and only 1/27 will be included. 1/9 is interesting as James Booker rather than Keith is on keys, but the SBD is pretty hissy and definitely hampers the enjoyment.

In case this helps jackstrawfromcolorado determine which shows from 78 to vine, here are my thoughts regarding the first part of the year, through May 78. I have listened to everything and graded all but a handful of shows (and the shows I have not graded (1/6, 7, 8, 18) have already been vined). I grade the following shows as GREAT (5 out of 5 stars): 1/13, 1/22, 1/31 and 4/16. All of these shows have been vined. The 4/16 vine is still flourishing, but I am not sure about the other 3 shows. 1/13 and 1/31 I vined on the 78 six pack vine I believe. I have fine with those being revined. I grade the following shows as VERY GOOD (4 out of 5 stars): 1/10, 1/11, 1/17, 2/1, 4/10, 4/11, 4/12, 4/14, 5/5, 5/6, 5/7 & 5/14. Of these, 1/17, 4/14, 5/5, 5/6 and 5/14 have not been vined, AND as I recall 5/7 was only vined as an AUD, and there is a nice SBD out there, which I would definitely include on a vine. So, I think those 5 VERY GOOD unvined shows, plus the SBD of 5/7, would make a pretty nice vine. My source for 1/17 was cotsman.4555, for 4/14 miller.83717, for 5/5 and 5/6 the glassberg.motb, and for 5/14 sony.vernon.7639. If you wanted to revine the GREAT shows, that would be a sweet vine too. Just my thoughts, no offense will be taken if you select other shows and go another route. Thanks!

That show was also part of what I at least consider to be one of the "original vines" here. It might be called New Orleans '71. Yamadog started that one 3 yrs ago or so. That was back when I used WMP to burn shows, and couldn't eliminate pauses btwn tracks, so on my copy there are 5 seconds of silence btwn tracks.

Anyone know whether it is true that new Miller SBDs from 72 and new SBDs from 81 are becoming available? I checked my notes on 6/22/73 and I only graded the show as Good, with D4 being Very Good (Other One, Jam are hot). I also noted that Bird Song and China Cat were especially good. Maybe I need to give the show another spin. I'm not quite up to 1000 shows yet, but am inching closer, thanks to everyone here!

Just a thought that I'm tossing around here for a new vine. This vine would be from various artists recorded at Ebbet's Field in Denver between '73 and '74. If someone could school me in how to convert .wav files to flac I'd do it that way. If not it would be .wav. This vine would included artists such as Muddy Waters w/ B.B. King, Bob Seger, Brewer & Shipley, The Ozark Mountian Daredevils, The Outlaws and Howlin' Wolf. I do have more shows from this venue, but these are the better of the lot. Any and all feedback is helpful...........

This doesn't have anything to do with vines, but I know most of you have had some experience with drives, computer problems, external drives ect. My most recent problem involves a 2 terabyte external hard drive (a WD my book essential). I was actively moving files from it to a laptop when the laptop crashed. When I got the laptop back on I found that the hard drive was locked. This is a feature of the drive that I have never used, so I don't have any password set up. I went to the WD website and forums and it is a glitch that happens only if the drive loses power while it is moving files. Unfortunately they haven't been able to find a solution, they have known about it for two years. I can always reformat the drive so it's not trash, but it has Some of my Garcia, Dead, 600 gigs of Beatles and about the same of Pink Floyd. Right now I have been trying some data recovery software with out any luck. I did read on one guys blog who had this happen how he took the drive apart with a screw driver and pluged it into his computer. Don't really want to do that though. Also someone suggested I put the hard drive in the freezer for 24 hours, plug it in and I will have a few minutes to transfer files before the write protect kicks back in (then put it back into freezer for 24 hrs). If anyone has ever had anything like this happen I could really use your help. I am not in any hurry, and am willing to try just about software, hacking trick before I take a screwdriver to it. Any way thanks for reading, and any help is appreciated. Thanks Robert
