Week of May 22, 1995
Had a request for some 1995 Grateful Dead.
This second-set opener of the Beatles' "It's All Too Much" is a great ecstatic moment - credit Vince Welnick's wonderful pop sensibility for bringing the Beatles into the Dead's latter-day repertoire, although all the Grateful Dead members were Beatle fans back in the day. And the "Iko Iko" that follows just goes on and on.
"Days Between," one of the last batch of songs Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia wrote together, is one of the greatest. It is the Dead's own story, in the same mortal mood as "Black Muddy River" and warmed by the songwriters' memories of those bright, hopeful early days.
