Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’ll check out some Grateful Dead music from 1969, 1970 and 1987.
Our first stop is from 1/24/69 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, the first of seven shows recorded for possible inclusion on Live/Dead. This was the first successfully recorded show using the new 16-track recording machine developed by Ampex. They had attempted to record the New Year’s show at Winterland a month earlier, but the results weren’t good. From 1/24/69, we have That's It For The Other One > New Potato Caboose.
From exactly one year later, on 1/24/70, we have this terrific batch of music from Hawaii, featuring Cumberland Blues, Cold Rain And Snow, Me And My Uncle, I'm A King Bee, Mason's Children, Black Peter, Good Lovin'. That closing Good Lovin’ cuts off at the end, owing the master tape reel change.
Lastlty this week is the end of the show from 9/16/87, the second night of a five night run at Madison Square Garden in New York City: Space > Truckin' > Wharf Rat > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away, Black Muddy River.
Be sure to join us here next week for more muic from the vault.
