    DP 24 Sound Quality
I was surprised someone mentioned this show shouldn't have been released due to poor audio. It sounds the same to me as all of the Dick's Picks era '74 WOS shows (DP 7, DP 12, DP 31). Road Trips WOS 1974 sounds a little better, but DaP 2 is right back to the lower quality. I think DaP 13 and DaP 17 sound a bit better (but technically DaP 13 is not WOS, and wasn't subject to the recording pitfalls incumbent with the Wall recording rig). Anyway, I just put DP 24 on, and it's not bad. Trust me on one thing, I did NOT like 1974 for many years, because of the generally poor audio quality, but I forced myself to listen, and eventually I became used to it. The show from DP 24 (Cow Palace) has a great set list, and that classic Playing in the Band UJB Morning Dew sandwich. Plus if you turn up the 4K band on the EQ during Scarlet Begonias Jerry's guitar sounds like Keith Richard in open D tuning. Looking forward to DaP 25. I hope this bass thing isn't as prominent as on 24. I hate to say it, but it ruined the release for me. Sorry Mr. Norman, you have my deepest respect and appreciation for your body of work, I just hear too much artificial bass tones at Berkeley. I'm not crazy about the art work. Too much red, and even I'm tiring if the skeletons. Why not have dancing bears on this one instead? Last 5: Dick's Picks 16 Dave's Picks 22 May 1977 4th Show 5/15/77 July 1978 4th Show 7/7/78 Crimson White & Indigo 7/7/89 (this is hands down the best show from 89/90). Now I have on DP 24.

Road trips is vast and awesome. I believe, officially it's like 15 volumes. For anyone not minding iTunes downloads, the whole set is available for around $250. I certainly purchase music from apple, amazon, and dead.net, however I try to spread it around. The annual Record Store Day is a great way to bring awareness to your local record shop. There aren't nearly as many as there used to be. The experience of walking into a store and browsing product can be enjoyable, and if you make a purchase you take possession immediately not having to wait on the mails. Currently playing: a magnificent "The Eleven," Dick's Picks #26, 4/26/69 Minneapolis.

jackstrawberry - not sure if you are aware, but the Road Trips series is being re-released on CD by Real Gone Music starting with the last releases first. So far Vol. 4 #5 Boston Music Hall 6/9/76 and Vol. 4 #4, Philadelphia, Spectrum 4/6/82 are available and Vol. 4 #3, Denver '73 will be available on February 2. I missed a few of the Road Trips and am looking forward to picking them up for a decent price. Given the weak packaging on the Road Trips series I am considering picking up another copy of some that I already have. They are available on ebay and Amazon for between $40-$50 each. I am particularly eager to pick up the 5/15/70 show on Vol. 3 #3.

The Women (and men) are indeed smarter....I talk to younger (sic) people and try and lure them in with that fact. A sad few pass it off as idolism. But most respond with a "that's cool as shit!" And the seed is sown. I'm responsible for getting at least eight people in my lifetime to jump onto the bus. Get some!!!....I hung out with some Hari Krishnas during the Cal-State Dominguez Hills shows in '90. They love their rice. I did too. Even shook a tambourine for an hour or so. No regrets....it's not easy making good rice

People from all walks of life were drawn to shows like Richard Dreyfus was drawn to the Devil’s Tower in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. But there were also narcs, feds, drug addicts, clinically insane misfits and jerks. There was a series of “religious” groups, like the Golden Roaders, selling backless dresses and Sufi spinning at shows. Then there were the Moonies, although I only saw them at shows in the Northeast, who were aggressive and deceptive, selling lame stickers and incense. The Krishnas gave out free rice, but they also played their freaking tambourines and drums at sunrise to greet the day! Not a good group to camp next to. From Scientologists to evangelical Christians to mini-messiahs that paraded around in full regalia (mostly a robe, a loin cloth and a conch full of burning sage) there was no shortage of wackadoodles to join up with or be abducted by. I know that I and hundreds (or at least dozens) of other Deadheads took it upon ourselves to be the ones to “look out” for the weaker ones as the scene grew exponentially and then collapsed upon itself. I am grateful for my time in that world and recently I reflected on that journey. At least the parts I could remember.

Thanks, alvarhanso and Jim, I guess I totally overlooked the fact that there could be more than one SBD recording of a show. That's a bit of a mind bender. Not sure why that never occurred to me be before. I guess I always heard moans about how expensive the tape was so I just figured it was a one-shot deal. As a side note, anybody know of any "authoritative" list for who recorded what shows for the GOGD? I've looked in Deadbase but the thing is like a million pages and it may have gone unnoticed. Regarding the Bear recording(s), I agree that's a bit of a head scratcher. I guess they wouldn't necessarily have come from the Betty Boxes. Mountain Girl had some stuff that was returned too so perhaps it was tied up in there? I do agree that the stuff from Rex likely was likely part of Betty's stash. There's probably some more scholarships to do around ABCD Enterprises (I admittedly know very little about this). It might be a catch-all for all of the returned boards from various sources. There are four letters... And the posters are inspiring me to check out those Frost and Greek shows. Those are officially on the todo list...

All of the talk about eras and such brought up some memories for me about the tapes I had back when that was the way everyone got to hear shows. In getting those tapes, I had collected a variety of shows from many eras, but most were from the 60s and 70s. I was told by other seasoned heads at the time that although they loved the Grateful Dead the best shows were from “back in the day”. I discovered early on that “back in the day” meant different things to different people. In any case my listening habits were shaped by the tapes I got. So I will say that I may have been one to listen to select eras as a result of this for quite some time. Fast forward to the present and I feel like I have expanded my horizons as I have done more listening homework. However even with that there is so much I don’t know. For example, I really never delved into 1982 shows. I recently acquired the Road Trips from 4/6/82, and that is a tremendous release. Earlier on in the comments many referenced several 1982 shows that I had never heard (Frost 10/10 was one and a Greek show 5/23, I believe was another). Well while at work, I jumped on the archive and found them, played them, loved them. Conversely, several have mentioned shows from 1972- 7/26 & 8/12. Now I felt like I had a way better handle on 1972, but I listened to those as well. Great stuff of course and again I discovered something new. My point from this is that I ma not really sure how exactly to define Grateful Dead eras, but when someone on these pages recommends a show or shows I check them out, regardless of era or year. Just important when it comes to releases, I only have 3 pieces of criteria: good show, good sound quality, and hopefully it is a complete show if possible. This also reminds me of the discussions that were had when the Rocking the Cradle was released. One of the arguments against its release was that although the venue of the Pyramids and Giza was about as cool as it could be, the playing was not up to par. I am not intending to stir a debate but simply that even for then, this was not a show that was widely desired for release while others were desired and also in the vault. So as we wait on the box set announcement and the eventual Dave’s 27 and 28, I just hope that they continue to be good shows in good sound quality. I do know that a good show is subjective not only to the listener but also to the time frame (or era). Still as long the releases meet the criteria I think we are all going to be better off as there is so much more great music by this band left to be released. I am enjoying the ride for sure.

12 parsecs haaahaaaaa I like star wars. They hate that ship! DP 12 has been commented on lately. So has WRS, but not the one from DP 12. It sounds great to me, but I've only been on the bus a couple years. This song take some time to be fully appreciated. Where does this version rank with the more experienced folks? I heard talk of Dick's Picks one and road trips 1974 as having great versions. Is this one up there? Does anyone know why Dark Star was not included on this CD set? For a set that is so heavily laced with jams, I don't see Dark Star. But the setlist page says it was played.

It took me some time, but I finally figured out how to do it by poking around and thinking a bit. To post videos, I use YouTube to create the syntax to embed the video. From YouTube, grab a video then underneath it there is a Share option, click it. Then underneath that there should be an Embed option, click that and a small box will appear with text. Copy this and paste it into the post you created and hit save and viola.. your video will post. Pictures are trickier.. I tried a ton of things and nothing worked.. Eventually I stole the YouTube method and cheated.. Go to YouTube, grab a video and do the Share/Embed process, copy and paste the text. Within the text there will be the original https link to the YouTube video with syntax both before and after it, the link to the video will be in quotes. Paste this.. then google search for an appropriate picture, select Images from the top of the search results. Scroll down and grab the image you want, click on it. Then to the right there will be an option to View Image, click on this and just the picture will appear. At the top of your browser will be the https statement (the link). Copy this and paste it to where the YouTube link was in your post, hit save and viola.. you should get something like this. You might have to tweak the height or width within the syntax to get it to look right, but it should work. Edit: Keep it clean.. no naked or kinky skeleton pics folks.. this is a family friendly site. :D

Pretty good Tony. How old is she? I'll be damned if I can get shirdeep's method to work. I will continue to use my constipated method for now, but I suspect shirdeep is onto the better way. I just don't know java. Java is for drinking, not typing.. I suspect lots of people will start getting their Dave's Picks 25 today. Can someone please make a comment as to sound quality and show performance? Someone a couple days who caught every 77 East Coast show back in the day commented that he/she was 77 saturated. I have to admit, 77 has not been in my circle of listening shows lately, but I am starting to get a little curious about this release. It is a monster show..

Hey LoveJerry, According to a list of All Dark Stars I pulled off of setlists.net a while ago, the only Dark Star played in June '74 was 06/23/74 at Jai-Alai Fronton - Miami, FL. Dark Star's not on the soundboard I have from 6/28 either.

I seem to recall a Dark Star tease of some sort in the 28 minute jam on disc 3 between Weather Report Suite and U.S. Blues. I bet that's what they are talking about in whatever you were reading. They did not play Dark Star that night but might have danced around the melody while they were in hyperspace. Bueller? How did you know I was playing hooky from school today. Well.. it's 26 degrees and high water.. good day to brush the snow off my boat and get a little river workout. :D

Looking forward to this release, that first set looks awesome, Half step opener with a Friend of the Devil, Dupree's, Dire Wolf and a Passenger, one of my favs. Second set ain't no slouch either. I must agree tho, 77 burn out seems to be going around.

I checked out the Jam but didn't really hear the Dark Star theme. It was more like the Space part of Dark Star, and the little dooka-dooka-dooka sound effect that Jerry (love the man) makes on his guitar. If you start Sugar Magnolia on 4/29/72, you can hear the sound I'm talking about. The set list I got from a site someone hear recommended, I thought you, or maybe stoltzfus or keithfan. Maybe it was icecreamconekid. Set list FM. https://www.setlist.fm/stats/songs/grateful-dead-bd6ad4a.html?song=Dark… If you click on the link and then click on Grateful Dead (underneath the "performing artists" circle graph, it will list the dates. If you scroll to the bottom of the list of dates, you will see that only 25 dates fit on the page. If you click page 2, it will have 1974 on it). This is the most awesome set list site, I love it.

As Jim said, I believe there's a tease somewhere within the 28 min jam out of Weather Report Suite. Much of the jam is an unlabeled Mind Left Body Jam, which is ironic, given that this release marked the first labeling of a MLBJ, but did it incorrectly in the 90 second track between China Cat and Rider. Also, while it is a MLBJ, it is also the perfect bridge between that and The Music Never Stopped, which has that very brief progression that replicates MLBJ. The 6/28 jam shifts from the spaciness of MLBJ toward the rocking funk of MNS. And I believe it's in the few minutes after the peak that it veers toward Dark Star territory, without ever getting fully sucked into the vortex. And then Bobby's jazzy vamping leads elsewhere entirely. I'm glad that this Pick keeps coming up, giving me another excuse to check out this glorious jam!

Although tracking is not yet available. I live a 3 hour drive from La Vergne, but due to mail innovations, will be lucky if I get it on Saturday. 6-28-74 Dark Star Jam I believe that Dead Base lists it’s presence (I’m at work and don’t have a DB here) and I think it’s something like MLBJ>Dark Star Jam>U. S. Blues. If there, it’s just a spacey segment. I always considered it to just be MLBJ>U. S. Blues

I can also definitely verify its in there - I was JUST listening to this very segment on the way to work yesterday (as a result of all of this chatter the day prior). They toy around with the Dark Star theme for a minute or two and then it heads off into another direction and they never actually come back to it proper, nor of course do they sing any of it. It's a JAZZY interstellar exploration with some very nice grooves, inclusive of the MLB aforementioned. I'm a also a sucker for the WRS on DiP One...it's good. Sixtus

And they wonder why people have phobias about clowns…. Not me though. Growing up I had a sad clown painting on the wall of my bedroom, painted by an uncle during the first months of a hapless marriage. So I’ve always preferred riding the Bolo bus and when at a circus, always root for that tiger. In any event, since 6 am this morning my package has been sitting in the 'Innovations Facility' down in TN. Hopefully they’ll find a solution for getting it to me here in Michigan by the weekend. Not hopeful though :-(

I would even go so far to call it a Dark Star jam, not just a tease. If you take a listen to the Moore AUD tape (link below), Jerry introduces the Dark Star theme immediately out of the MLB jam, at 14:06 in the "Jam of Various themes" track. The common Dark Star pre-verse jam is clearest in the next 30 seconds or so, but continues until 17:35, when Jerry moves into a jazzy two-chord vamp that lasts until 24:35. That part would certainly fit in a Dark Star, but it's not obviously related to the DS melody. At 24:35, the spacey buildup to Tiger starts, collapses, and gives way to the speedy riff that becomes US Blues. Very fun to listen to this after a long break from it and see how the whole thing is constructed. Here's the link: https://archive.org/details/gd1974-06-28.sonyecm99.moore.berger.106003… But is it the best WRS? Maybe. At least of the full suite versions, I think 6/18/74 gives it a run for its money.

I've heard that before, think it's hysterical. I shouldn't even say this.. but here I go.. my main tour buddy and I were at a series of NY shows more than a decade ago. Phil often mentions Cody in his donor raps and I think I said something to extent hey.. didn't he say it was Robby last night? ..and an ongoing dialogue and Phil the vampire was born. To which we incorporated into the Phil Donor Rap CD. It's still a running joke, I would like to thank to boy scout troupe 371 for...... I apologize.. very off flavor and said only in jest.. I'm a big Phil supported, but we still howl about it from time to time. I'm pretty sure this is the only thing keeping Keith Richards alive. ..and for what it's worth, his donor raps convinced me to be an organ donor (though considering the likely shape of some of my organs, I'm not entirely convinced I am doing good).

They were wondering if they were left over tickets or reprints. Well this long of a time after I have finally responded. OK, I know I am moving much too slow. You can tell that they are reprints. The actual ticket is a fraction larger and The Warlocks was printed in a gold foil print instead of black, like the reprint. Sorry pic is fuzzy. This was an old digital camera and its software is causing all pics to be fuzzy. Need to take again with my phone, check back in two years. G

It doesn’t show up on my iPad, it just says IMG42.It’s weird but there have been times where someone’s pic doesn’t show up, but once I log in it appears. Other times I can see a pic, but the next time I visit the site it does not appear. I’m logged in now but cannot see Gary’s pic.

Unparalleled. From 76 - 78 none equal. So good my hair got caught in the fan while I was thrashing. Agree about the cover art. One of my least favorites. For my taste, I would be OK with all the red possibly, if the foreground characters were different. I'm not crazy about the country Jamboree skeletons. Rootin tootin hootenanny hollerin country Jamboree. Or maybe not, that is a lot of red.

That took some work, impressive. Likes: Loser, Brown-eyed, Wharf, Althea, Franklin's, Candyman, Black Peter, Sugaree, Speedway, Truckin', Mr. Charlie, He's Gone, Row Jimmy... not as much: Weather Report, Sugar Magnolia, Cassidy, Throwing Stones. You did ask. Still an admirable list, nice.
