The Grateful Dead's last touring show of 1977 finds them going for broke, taking chances on fan favorites like "Jack Straw," "Friend Of The Devil," and "The Music Never Stopped," carving out righteous grooves on a one-of-kind "Scarlet>Fire" and a tremendous "Truckin'." An ultra high energy show, with a first set that rivals the second? Not unheard of, but definitely rare. Hear for yourself...

Age-ism..., Health-ism....

Absolutely rampant in U.S. business, and there are no practical legal protections. Pay attention to affordable opportunities to learn, add skills, work licenses and certifications. They could come in handy, soon or eventually. Get your skillset current and be realistic about the commercial demand for what you can do. Put yourself out there as best you can, in your community, in your network and on line. It took me all of ten years (incl. ~30 months of no/low employment) to fully re-orient my work back into tech from finance. Nearly every little step along the way was somehow valuable. And I know I can get laid off again. At the very least, you can ensure you never have a disastrous meeting or interview, if you can get current and stay informed, be emotionally optimistic, and can communicate clearly about your goals and your value. Don't be or remain a long-term victim of this brutal system!

Happy Friday, ONLY if you rattle the cage for the next box. Where's the Bolo teaser clue(s)? No teaser, no box. It seems. I'm still stumping for Summer '73. But equally interested in Fall '72 and Spring '71. Naturally, equally thirsty for more '69 and '70, but assume those are years with precious few release-able tapes left in the vault. But throwing us the 50th of Anthem with a '68 show included would mollify me til box time.

Few thoughts: Getting laid off feels bad (I can speak from experience), but just know that you will find something soon and it will be a better experience than the one before (I can speak from experience). Remember, no one "gave" you that job for 17 years. You earned it through hard work and gained skills and experience that another employer will love to have. All the best - Road warriors: This came up last week I think...I also spend a lot of time in the car each morning and evening. It is where I listen to the most dead and since I'm usually alone, it's where I get my most "serious" listening done. I wouldn't trade it for the world. 30 trips conversation inspired some of my listening this week: 79, 84, 85. All great stuff. Need to dig into the 90s shows a bit more. 93 is killer. MSG 94: Agree this was a wonderful run - in fact, much of that fall tour was nice, but there are a few nights at MSG that really stand out and if they ever make a random MSG box, could certainly be included. 10/14 features that crazy Scarlet>Fire, but I also like the 18th a lot too (how could you not with a H>S>F and a very fine Days Between) have a great weekend everyone -

Eric-- I am in the same boat. Sadly, watched my former company (a startup) do its best to blow through $100 mil of venture money.. and am also out of work. In this world, doing a job so well you become expendable is the odd rule. I wish you well finding the next thing. If it puts a smile on anyone's face-- I cleaned out my desk to 'ship of fools'. The IT guy had a good laugh. I needed to sign paperwork. I showed up (in boston, in march) with the sunroof open, 'samson and delilah' on loud. real freaking loud. Switched to "he's gone" to drive away.

Wondering if there is enough unreleased primal 1968 of good sound quality left in the Vault for a 50th anniversary box set? Like I wrote yesterday, I have always been way more of an "Americana" Dead fan - but lately, I am slowly and finally realizing just how off the charts the band's '68 output was.

KeithFan, in your last line there you made an interesting reference to your take on 'Dave's favorite song'. Perhaps it was in jest, but I have had a recurring epiphany that I assumed his favorite was 'Playing in the Band', because this song has appeared on almost all of the era-worthy DaP releases. Just something I've noticed over the years. If there is a show released in an era where a Playin' could be played, it is likely on there. Coincidence? Probably but who knows. Erik - may you find a new gig pronto - and that goes for anyone else out there in a similar boat... Also, icecrmcnkid - excellent and sneaky Seinfeld reference in there....well done. I'll tell you what pisses me off

This comment is in regard to Eric's place of employment. I really hope that they didn't let you go because you make more money than some newcomer at your position who hasn't gone through 17 years of Merit increases due to good performance. I abhor companies who do that. I know woman who was a software developer 215 years at my company. A new hotshot came along and picked up on the skills needed to be a top level developer within a couple years. He was making about $40,000 less a year then the woman who was there for 15 years. When a general downsizing of the company occurred she was the one who lost her job because they could hire two more people like the guy I mentioned who makes half as much as her. Despicable. All so Lumbergs stock can go up half a point. Sorry again about the spelling and punctuation, you get what you get with Google voice translator. All in all it's pretty f****** amazing to me. It's incredible how much technology came out of that Roswell crash. Faked The moon landing??? Please, that was as real as can be. The conspiracy is how we freaking got there. Roswell parts through and through. Actually I don't believe anything I just wrote there was a bunch of gibberish. Happy Friday to Dead Land. I started with Dick's Picks 23, which is September 17th 1972 for those who like me can't remember what these different volumes refer to. I didn't make it past bird song before I felt inclined to put on Dave's Picks 24. Why listen to an old 1972 release when I can listen to a new 1972 release. Either way bird song is there. I believe Dave's favorite song is bird song, because it's on all eight post pigpen releases in 1972.

Your comment is right on, and I know others have said it. We are so so so so so fortunate to have all of these recordings. I can't believe this is the only band who did this, but so be it, I don't think too many other bands of the 70s switched it up as much, improvised as much, or had as many nuances as the Grateful Dead. So it's truly worth it for Deadheads. I can't imagine I would want to hear the Stones doing the same set list every night

Sound stunning - upgrade significant. High/low balance good. Cover art is in the top 4 of the DaP series. Not a skeleton art fan, but this is gorgeous. Is this the last show Jerry played the white Travis Bean?

Fave songs are the "fake Reggae" or Funky type ones

EyesEstimated Crazy Fingers Row Jimmy Shakedown M. Half Step T. Jed Help>Slip>Frank U.S. Blues Something about those slower tempos and the GoGD that really does it for me. Other Rock bands rarely to never even try to go there. Never as successfully as the GoGD. Billy is a in-the-pocket player.

#2001 arrived in WA state, Lists

Funny to see what people don't really enjoy as well haha, the ones that come to my mind are 'Never Trust a Woman', 'Man Smart Women Smarter', and Samson and Delilah. Those are pretty much the only songs I will skip. Though I have heard some nice reggae sounding jams arounf Man Smart Women Smarter, 3-16-90 is an example. DaP 25 arrived this evening here in Washington State, for anyone wondering if they've made it this far yet.

DaP 25 - first listen

As mentioned by others, superb sound quality. Just a real treat to have these shows sound this good. One thing I’ve not heard mentioned is the incredibly dynamic Wharf Rat from this show. This has always been one of my favorites songs but this one is truly unlike any I remember. A tad shaky going back into St. Stephen but this will remain one of my favorites.

My fave Grateful Dead list from last night?....

....sweep it under the rug. I left out so many songs. Now I feel guilty. No Jack Straw? C'mon Vguy. Get it together man.

the shipping direction makes no sense. I live in Indiana. it shipped out from Illinois, then to TN (which makes no sense cuz TN and IL don't connect at all so it went through KY as well) then back up to Ohio. it pretty much went through every fucking state around me. instead of going straight from Illinois to Indiana. the u.s. postal service fucks me every which way everytime and doesn't bother to kiss me first....GOD DAMMNIT I HATE THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE!

Alright i'm convincing myself this is the best Mississippi Uptown i've heard. Wow right out the gate. I went through the first CD, and then decided to bookend it, Mississippi Uptown followed by The Music Never Stopped. Indeed! Got that feeling that i've had at many shows, everything's gonna be alright. Pull all three CDs out, and check out the tree. Warren, there's fresh dry powder for you. Ski on and thank you for the skiing thrills. Slow Dog Noodle, I've skied the bumps like that, kinda happy lazy. Libertycaps, Nice to see your source...dynaco mk III's et al. i'm playin' through some '59 el34 Ampex monoblocs into some same-era Wharfedale SFB-3s. :-) Delivery was first quoted Wednesday next week, then Saturday but the USPS delivered it tonight! ....that is/was my safe word also when I get/got too high at shows. It works. Believe me. It works like the Dupree's from Binghamton. They tuned that song all tour and expelled its drippiness that evening in all it's glory. Wonderful! Donna's in tune. The world was alright that night.

But looking over the tour dates now, I realize that I never had any of the shows from November. So this is my first time hearing this Binghamton gig. It's going on 11:00pm and Jack Straw is just underway. It's going to be a long and rip-roaring night! Peace, everybody...

Yow!! a cool slower Passenger!! Number 6444 has landed!! So cool on a Friday night after a big production day. I'm exhausted and just happy with this grate new music. So far just the first set. Maybe this has already been said, Kieth is really up in the mix, almost too much, but he is playing so good so creatively. I'm having a hard time hearing Bobby, maybe needs some EQ. I love all years/periods/keyboards and prefer complete shows although I'll still dig a cool compilation like with road trips. Hey all in deadland, enjoy!!

I don't have mine yet, but I am surpised at the post indicating the liner notes say Jerry played the Wolf at Binghamton. The DP 10 liner notes say he switched over for Tha Winterland show in late December.

Arrived in MT yesterday, just finishing up a first listen this afternoon. Sounds good, some cool slower tempo versions of a few songs with a nice jammy feel, great Scarlet-Fire with a great transition. The whole thing is really hitting the spot for me this afternoon.

I got mine in Raleigh NC today. I have a question, as this is my first time doing the subscription. Is the bonus disk sent separately (today's delivery was only the 3 disk V25)? And is it one disc for the year, or one bonus for each of the four releases?Thanks

Bonus disc

The bonus disc is released with the second volume of the year. This year 11/17/71 is the Pick, with filler from 12/14/71, and the bonus disc completes 12/14. Unknown at this point which set is on which disc, but I'd predict the bonus disc is set 2. Though, if I bought a la carte, and missed out on the second set, I'd be bummed. But it always pays to subscribe!
