    Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall
Not my first show, saw several in SF in '67, but the first of eight at this venue. Feb. 5th, 1969. The Iron Butterfly show, and an enlightenment for a good part of the Butterfly heads. The early shouts of "get off the stage" "you suck" and a steady chorus of booing, was slowly replaced with the quiet respect for a marvel of music occurring right before them. As "We Bid You Goodnight" ended, and the crowd rose in appreciative applause, hardly anyone remained seated. The existing recording, while hacked up and missing chunks, captures the sound of the music, and is decent enough to listen to many times, but the show itself is something I'll never forget. Winterland forever remains my favorite venue, this place is right behind it.

At least it's nice to see that these coward pirates enjoy good food!!That area has had pirates for hundreds of years. Nobody is going to do anything about it. Because of these Somali pirates we had to forgo a sailing trip around the world .

If you have the date of your first show you could probably find it. I am glad to see you were transformed forever that night.

I don't remember much about the show except that Memorial Hall was a small venue, I think it held around 3500 people max. The show wasn't sold out. I sat a couple rows up in the balcony section right in the middle and watched the band and the wombat dancing as I tripped on micro dot for the first time ever. That night changed me for ever.

What an amazing night. Walked in an unknowing virgin, walked out an initiated starry-eyed Deadhead. Most of it is a wonderous blur, but I do distinctly remember "Looks Like Rain" that went off into amazing places with thunderous percussion and a "Not Fade Away" that made my body move like it never had before. I'd love to hear a tape of this one and see if it's all that I remember. Electrifying!

Somali pirates managed to grab the German ship Beluga Fortune on Sunday. Here is the proof: Beluga Fortune free after frustrated Somali Pirates flee The ship's team fled to a panic room, cut the engines and shut off the power, which disappointed the buccaneers into abandoning their crime the following day. Almost two decades of anarchy in Somalia has permitted piracy to thrive and 2010 has seen the highest incidence of pirate attacks since 2005.Pirates have been known to steal stuff from other ships and they also held other people as their captives. It is very scary to sail alone in the middle of the ocean because you might meet pirates on the way.
