I remember they played
I remember they played "Casey Jones", so unless they also played it the night before, this is the show I attended. What I remember from this, my 2nd G.D. show, was that I bought a bootleg album for $5, which turned out to be pretty good, lending the cover to somebody at some point, to roll a joint on, which I referred to as "a worthy purpose".
Hard to Handle > Casey Jones
the playing and crowd energy from the is top-notch.
get this show!
Did Garcia REALLY fall to
Did Garcia REALLY fall to his knees during the passionate solo in "Hard To Handle???? I don't think we'll ever know for sure.
Too hot that night inside
I remember it being so hot and crowded in the Palladium that i almost passed out. It's the only Dead concert i was hoping to be a short one.
Yeah it was extremely hot in Palladium
I'm 6'4 and watched Garcia intently that night as I really "got it" at this particular show. I don't recall him dropping to his knees - but I will check with my brother and some friend who were also there and ask if anybody remembers.
hotter than an sob, yup
we wanted some air and looked for the balcony-heading, instead, right into the gurls bathroom complex. nice palace; main room was also the "blues brothers" concert in the movie, front area looks like the "dancing with the stars" set...maybe that's another nice LA place, dunno.
have this on tape
Born in 1971, sorry - this is my favorite recording of the boys at their best - Loser (listen to the solo) and Hard to Handle (yeah, solo again, but Pig's vocals are killer!) are two of the greatest recordings ever (sorry Wolfgang and Ludwig). I did manage to see them 9 times pre-95, but, to me, the Dead 68-71 is their prime!
9 out of 10 Deadheads agree...
...The best version of Hard Too Handle the Dead ever did was this show -- was it the eclipse that night? It is amazing the consensus that was there, even before Phil fingered it for release or the Jerrry Knee rumor.
IMHO, the next best edition is RI Auditorium, Providence, 4/71. Give it a play if you love the Dead jamming H2H.
~ drugstore love ~
must have show
The St. Stephen is classic, without any jam after. Hard to Handle and Lovelight are amazing.
Any photos or video of this show?
Hard to Handle
Tore me up. Blazing great performance by the boys!!!
My second show
Yes, we saw auras around everyone and it was the best Hard to Handle ever. Total Eclipse of the Moon indeed. You can hear Dave Clark whoop when Pig starts Hard to Handle, and I remember Bobby telling Bertando to back up with his tape recorder and thinking "hey he can't do that". So glad he did. My favorite show I think, though some of the later Winterland shows were great as well. I am blessed to have seen the band in their best years, raw and full of energy. Only wish I'd seen the 60's shows, but I can crank them up on the stereo and close my eyes and I'm right THERE!
Jerry broke a string
Either the 5th or 6th was my first concert. The only identifier would be that Jerry broke a string on St. Stephen. It was very hot. I remember the crew coming out throwing water on the front of the crowd. My memory is somewhat unsure from too much acid. I could not find my car so I had to wait for everyone else to leave. Great concert.
Best Show Yet
Up to this time this was the finest Grateful Dead Concert I'd ever seen. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Although not a long show by 72 standards, I sensed something very special. Opening the 2nd set with St Stephen. WOW. What a set list!In less than a year, 9 months to be exact, what I sensed that night about this group being very special came to fruition.
