The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

....Nicko: "We got to get through this tour yet. [Laughs] We got a lot of life left in us. We've not ever, that I can recall, unless anyone else in the band has without a band gathering, decided whether or not we want to carry on or not. We just carry on. I've always made it clear to Steve [Harris, bass] and the guys that if I can't drive the band physically, then I'd step down. Don't get me wrong, boys and girls — I'm not saying that I am. It's so important that the band carries on and plays as much as we want because we have the passion. Again, it's not financial, it's not anything to do with that, it's because we love it. If it came as a chore and I'll quote Jan [Gers, guitar], if we ever became a parody of ourselves, that would be the time to hang it up. The thing is, we're not. I'm the granddaddy in the band. I'm the oldest fellow in the band which is quite unusual because every band I was in before MAIDEN, I was always the youngest or the second youngest. Now, I'm the wise old man of the band! They won't agree with the 'wise,' just the 'old.' We'll carry on as long as our fans, which are the most loyal and I'm telling you right now, without a doubt, I compare it to 'Arnie's Army', the golfer Arnold Palmer. He started a fanbase back in the '60s. He had this massive following and they called it 'Arnie's Army'. They were the most loyal fans to a golfer. Every band says their fans are the best and I love that their bands do respect it, but I truly mean it and I know we have the best fans in the world. We do not make you guys happy, then what's the point? Although we do it for ourselves, but at the end of the day, we could go up there and think we're Jack The Lad and you could go, 'What was that all about?' Nick's playing in a different time. He's in a different song. Bruce is singing out of time!' When it's not that fantastic vibe that we get when we play together — we'll carry on as you want us to and the fans and as long as we have the heart to and believe me, there's actually more passion the more we get older than I think we had when we had when we were in the mid-'80s in the first heyday of MAIDEN."....passion, in a nutshell. Up The Irons!! Iron Maiden was my first blind date. Keep on trucking' on gents.

I'M Playing that particular show right now. 2010 is and adjustment but I get what they were going for: a recording that captures the live sound not a dry ice sbd. and yeah Mike was the most vocal about not wanting to quit phish. their shows in 95 they received some spillage from Deadheads after the Dead quit in 95. I heard phish first before the dead it was Hoist first then Rift second wasn't majorly into lawnboy. then it was livephish vol 1. and I traded the warner bros box set for Hampton Comes ALive box set. and I was a phish fan. I probly am more into phish than the dead truth be told.

They responded to the fact that a ton of other people weren't ready to stop touring either. They probably had a meeting. Mike. "You know guys, a bunch of our fellow heads are gonna need a life preserver. This is big!" Fishman. "Yeah Mike. We gotta rise up! Lemme wash my mumu" Trey. "Time to practice like we've never practiced before. Put that joint down. Serious time!" Page. "I need a sammich." Truth....Trey started down the Jerry road in 2002-2003. Got pulled over by a cop. Game changer. I love that cop....

But unrealistic to do 80 songs just one or two times with a guitarist who is new to the material - couldn't expect it to sound confident and sure. A series of linked recoveries and hold-your-breath transitions in key moments of most songs. Lot of it sounded like a rehearsal. It wasn't horrible, but far from "dialed in". And no I didn't go. And I don't hate Trey at all. I saw many a Phish/TAB show. Mad respect. FTW tour should have been called "Just the Tip". Just when it was getting interesting, it was over. The 4th or 8th version of all those songs would have had some AMAZING moments, but we can only imagine. LedDed: Well said! The decline was sad. I wish I could have seen him before my first show 6/17/1982 (JGB/Bobby & the News double bill) when he was LONG past "handsome leather jacket gunslinger" days. I was stunned at the person I saw onstage compared to every photo I had EVER seen.

Can't wait to hear these 2 shows for the price of one. Thank god I subscribed to get the bonus disk to get most of the 12/14/71 show. I wonder what was left out from that 12/14 show and if they just don't have the rest of the songs in their archive or decided to leave some songs off because it can't fit on 2 CDs? Either way Keith and Pigpen both in the mix is a great thing.

I'll bet the Bonus Disc / Covers "rule" does not apply when the song is in "public domain" (public domain means the artist and / or their legal entity has been dead / dissolved for x number of years). Maybe Good Lovin' and Smokestack Lightning are public domain tunes.

And sounds like they'll be doing something that they've never done before.... I wonder if that could be a collection of early GD show fragments w/ Pig....

I'm no copyright law expert by any means, but I was under the assumption that the public domain songs are listed as "Traditional, arranged by..."? The 1st Dave's Picks bonus disc has Nobody's Fault But Mine...and that one is listed as such.

Appeared to be available as I logged in, but now says unavailable. Subscribed, so am all set. Too early for Vol. 27 predictions? They may have to up the number for 2019 and make it an even 20,000. Glad to see the returns aren't quite yet diminishing. For those who missed out, I'm sure plenty of people have bought multiple subscriptions and the ala carte maximum number, so these will be popping up on Ebay, which I'm sure already have. Now onto watching the Seaside Chat....which I see now is actually from the basement.

Interesting video. It sounds like Dave is working on 3 things, in addition to Dave's Picks. Wow! 3 things! I'm going to guess that a mono version of Anthem of the Sun with a white cover on 200 gram vinyl is one of them. My second guess for Dave's thing is a Europe '90 box set. And #3, the thing they've never done anything like it before? It has to be a box of every note played on The Quick and The Dead tour. That is, all the Dead and all the QMS. Oh man....I can't wait!

12-14-71 what's missing here is... after Loser in the first set is Jack Straw, not there, after Next Time you See Me should be a Tennessee Jed, not there, then after Run Run Rudolph should be Black Peter, Playin in the Band and Casey Jones which ends the first set, not there. The second set is all chopped up. We don't get the opening Ramble on Rose or the Mexicali, starts off second set with Big Boss Man, then the entire jam from the second set is missing, Cryptical, Drums, TOO>me and my unkle jam>TOO, Wharf Rat and Sugar Magnolia, all missing. It does have the ending of the second set You Win Again,NFA>GDTRFB>NFA all included. So What's on that bonus disc? Not listed here. let's hope we get the Jack Straw and Tennessee Jed and the big jam from the second set. Gonna take some work to get this disc back in order. Russian Troll? Fake News? Really? Ever try calling in an order? It really is that difficult so not fake news and as far as trolls, Russian or otherwise, right. Fastest sell out to date? Could be a record. Glad I got a copy of this one.

You were obviously targeted for special call center treatment, all in good hell fun. Tell it to the fake President, he'll be all ears. I assume you'll be calling him too, speak English-only when you get his very limited attention. Primary a la carte availabity is pretty sketchy now, wow, but it's alive via secondary sources. This release might struggle to hold $40 on eBay at times in months ahead. Be patient.

Interesting tidbit of info in the video. It can be surmised that the bonus disc will mostly consist of... Tennessee Jed Black Peter Playin' Casey Jones Ramble On rose Mexicali Cryptical Drums Other One MAMU Jam Other One Wharf Rat Sugar Magnolia In the video, Dave says one song is excluded, but the big jam is complete and uninterupted, so it would appears that either Tennessee jed, Black Peter or Casey Jones will be left off. Either no "cocaine", "shackles, ball and chain" or "Sweet Susan" for you....until whenever they decide to officially release the other Ann Arbor show. I can't imagine that one NOT being released at some point, whether as a Dave's Pick or other project. I would consider 12/15/71 an essential show from that year. If you haven't heard it, check it out... https://archive.org/details/gd1971-12-15.sbd.miller.97718.sbeok.flac16 edit - I agree with the following comment, in regards to the Dave's Picks series. The cost of being a consumer of the later era's is considerally higher than the bulk of these smaller one full show releases.

I'm not trying to start a rumor here, but why break up the 2 sets so dramatically? I know Dave likes to keep the jam segment intact, but wasn't there an easier way? Perhaps we will get a surprise on disc 2? Maybe......Dark Star from Ann Arbor? Here's hoping.
