The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

There was a good one on telly here on Jeff Beck last week. Lots of clips from The Yardbirds up to recent concerts. He is as vital now as he ever was. I haven't bought his latest studio cd, Loud Hailer, but the blu ray Live At The Hollywood Bowl summer 2016 is superb. He is joined by various people on different tracks. All great, but the music played with Jan Hammer is dazzling. High hopes for London next month!

Wasn’t a huge fan of that stuff, but again, by today’s standards they still rock!Like Ozzy cause he cracks me up; road trip show with Jack, his books etc But if you’ve seen the farewell concert/documentary The End, I think on showtime, they were awesome. It’s a shame touring sucks so much because a lot of these old goats still have it, like Phil!

I saw both Black Sabbath and Deep Purple last year, for the first time since 1975. Incredible! Black Sabbath's set was culled almost exclusively from the first three albums-and the arrangements and solos were almost exactly the same as the original recorded versions. Deep Purple played some new material, and with Steve Morse on guitar and Don Airey on keyboards they were much different from early 70s. More contained, and less chaotic. But both Steve and Don played really well, incorporating just enough of their own styles while still referencing Blackmore and Jon Lord. And Ian Paice's drum roll at the beginning of Fireball nearly blew the roof off. None of which has much to do with The Dead. I suppose Sabbaths gig was the polar opposite of a Dead show-rehearsed to the minutest degree. Maybe when Daves Picks 26 arrives, I'll get back on course!

Yes Oro! The Night Sweats are great indeed! I saw them on Austin City Limits and was immediately turned on without realizing that they have been fairly well known for a few years now. I got the live at Red Rocks release that came out recently and think it is great. Well worth checking out live - very high energy stuff. High on Dick Clark's dance-ability meter too! Son of Bitch - get me a drink!

A little late to the post, thanks Cosmic David for the link to the show. I was there, really enjoyed it and took a few days to meander my way back to NM. Maybe I'll see you in July when Dead and Co are in ABQ. One of my favorite parts of the night was when Phil joined Leftover Salmon on Catfish John (and then Big Boss Man). It really suited the JGB, but hearing Phil play it live I wish they had played it with the Dead a few times. Leftover Salmon's entire opening set (including their entire new album which they released the day before the show: https://archive.org/details/LeftoverSalmon2018-05-05.AKG.P170.AUD.flac16 The listening theme for my trip was CO shows (other than DaP 26). 1973-11-20 Denver, 1981-12-09, Dead and Co 2017. As everyone else, I like DaP26 a lot. TOO from the two shows are very different from each other and very good. Love the 71-72 TOO's with a cowboy middle. Love those Dark Star sandwiches from that era as well. All the new material sounds fresh, the band sounds energized. For me, I prefer this release by a fair margin over DaP22 - was excited for Felt Forum but it didn't produce for me the way DaP 26 has.

So Much stuff being tossed about here and there; all quite interesting and inspiring. First, a shout out to 5/9/77 Buffalo - most specifically to that ridiculous Help > Slip > Franklin's OPENER. Can you possibly imagine being a lucky Head on a third consecutive night of this unfolding magical trifecta only to have it open up with this monstrous entity??? Distilling these three shows down, I think this sequence is probably my favorite out of all three shows. A few years back I made an 'ultimate setlist' from these shows and sure enough it kicks off with this sucker. Lots of banter related to 12/9/81, and admittedly I haven't relistened to that one in quite some time but I feel compelled to now. I DO recall the several unspecified patches that caught me off guard and sort of took me out of the moment when I first heard it. I suppose the 'How jarring is it?' is the question I will need to revisit. Bill and Ted are returning! (thanks VGuy for that tiny blink-if-you-miss-it reference). I actually saw this news yesterday and was like - wow! totally cool. Just think how far Neo I mean Ted has come since this role... Recently also learned about Fleetwood Mac going on tour without Lindsay Buckingham. That sort of shocked me too, as I figured of all the people left he was one of the pillars given his role. I suppose even pillars can be replaced to hold up the roof. GFar - thanks for posting that awesome article/interview about the early Jerry years. Reminded me I needed to go pre-order that. I did. Looking forward to it. When's the box set announcement? What about Gainesville? Sixtus

Can't wait to hear these 2 shows for the price of one. Thank god I subscribed to get the bonus disk to get most of the 12/14/71 show. I wonder what was left out from that 12/14 show and if they just don't have the rest of the songs in their archive or decided to leave some songs off because it can't fit on 2 CDs? Either way Keith and Pigpen both in the mix is a great thing.

I'll bet the Bonus Disc / Covers "rule" does not apply when the song is in "public domain" (public domain means the artist and / or their legal entity has been dead / dissolved for x number of years). Maybe Good Lovin' and Smokestack Lightning are public domain tunes.

Appeared to be available as I logged in, but now says unavailable. Subscribed, so am all set. Too early for Vol. 27 predictions? They may have to up the number for 2019 and make it an even 20,000. Glad to see the returns aren't quite yet diminishing. For those who missed out, I'm sure plenty of people have bought multiple subscriptions and the ala carte maximum number, so these will be popping up on Ebay, which I'm sure already have. Now onto watching the Seaside Chat....which I see now is actually from the basement.

Interesting video. It sounds like Dave is working on 3 things, in addition to Dave's Picks. Wow! 3 things! I'm going to guess that a mono version of Anthem of the Sun with a white cover on 200 gram vinyl is one of them. My second guess for Dave's thing is a Europe '90 box set. And #3, the thing they've never done anything like it before? It has to be a box of every note played on The Quick and The Dead tour. That is, all the Dead and all the QMS. Oh man....I can't wait!

12-14-71 what's missing here is... after Loser in the first set is Jack Straw, not there, after Next Time you See Me should be a Tennessee Jed, not there, then after Run Run Rudolph should be Black Peter, Playin in the Band and Casey Jones which ends the first set, not there. The second set is all chopped up. We don't get the opening Ramble on Rose or the Mexicali, starts off second set with Big Boss Man, then the entire jam from the second set is missing, Cryptical, Drums, TOO>me and my unkle jam>TOO, Wharf Rat and Sugar Magnolia, all missing. It does have the ending of the second set You Win Again,NFA>GDTRFB>NFA all included. So What's on that bonus disc? Not listed here. let's hope we get the Jack Straw and Tennessee Jed and the big jam from the second set. Gonna take some work to get this disc back in order. Russian Troll? Fake News? Really? Ever try calling in an order? It really is that difficult so not fake news and as far as trolls, Russian or otherwise, right. Fastest sell out to date? Could be a record. Glad I got a copy of this one.

You were obviously targeted for special call center treatment, all in good hell fun. Tell it to the fake President, he'll be all ears. I assume you'll be calling him too, speak English-only when you get his very limited attention. Primary a la carte availabity is pretty sketchy now, wow, but it's alive via secondary sources. This release might struggle to hold $40 on eBay at times in months ahead. Be patient.

Interesting tidbit of info in the video. It can be surmised that the bonus disc will mostly consist of... Tennessee Jed Black Peter Playin' Casey Jones Ramble On rose Mexicali Cryptical Drums Other One MAMU Jam Other One Wharf Rat Sugar Magnolia In the video, Dave says one song is excluded, but the big jam is complete and uninterupted, so it would appears that either Tennessee jed, Black Peter or Casey Jones will be left off. Either no "cocaine", "shackles, ball and chain" or "Sweet Susan" for you....until whenever they decide to officially release the other Ann Arbor show. I can't imagine that one NOT being released at some point, whether as a Dave's Pick or other project. I would consider 12/15/71 an essential show from that year. If you haven't heard it, check it out... https://archive.org/details/gd1971-12-15.sbd.miller.97718.sbeok.flac16 edit - I agree with the following comment, in regards to the Dave's Picks series. The cost of being a consumer of the later era's is considerally higher than the bulk of these smaller one full show releases.

I'm not trying to start a rumor here, but why break up the 2 sets so dramatically? I know Dave likes to keep the jam segment intact, but wasn't there an easier way? Perhaps we will get a surprise on disc 2? Maybe......Dark Star from Ann Arbor? Here's hoping.
