The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Wow! Two flash floods 22 months apart (7/30/16 & 5/26/18) Both floods looks very scary. Mother Nature must have it in for Ellicott City. I feel sad for that area.

No.. I am about 3 hours West of there in the mountains, but that is essentially where I grew up. My parents and brother live a few miles upstream.. It's a really cool, 250 year old downtown area.. most of the buildings on main street are all stone, the street is still original cobblestone. Antique shops, bars, eclectic shops.. etc. It's a really fun, historic town. At about 1:25 seconds into this second clip shows the flooding through the downtown a little better. Essentially the same as they had in 2016. Prior to that, the lesser floods were in 1972 (hurricane Agnes) and another in the 50's that my mom remembers.. but neither were as bad as the two in the last two years. It's high water where I live too.. but we did not get the storms they got today. Just good clean water fun in the higher country. Thanks for asking, Jeff.. No flooding for me today. Had an excellent, high water run on the river I live on though.. which gets very difficult as levels rise. It's a stout run at any level.

The Sweet Sunny South is in the box set Before the Dead performed in '62 by the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers.. I'm sure that's what planted the seed in my mind to break out the Bluegrass Album Band's rendition today. It was buzzing around in my head all morning. J. D. Crowe covered it too I think as early as '71, which is probably how it wound up in their repertoire.. but who knows. God only knows who/what/where influenced Jerry in the early years. Funny.. I have never met anyone, at least in my music circles, that has heard of the Bluegrass Album Band. I got on a big Tony Rice tangent in the late 80's/early 90's which lead me to them. I have enjoyed everything I have heard from them.. but the fact that you can't even find a clip on YouTube from that album lead me to believe they were obscure. Go figure... thanks for clarifying. It looks like the song dates back to the 19th century (1840?).. perhaps written for a minstrel show. It interesting when un unravel the history of GD related songs.. where it might take you. http://amst312.umwblogs.org/2009/03/19/the-sweet-sunny-south/

Hope you are nowhere near the Maryland flooding, and, if you are, you and yours are staying safe. I'd make some inane comment about all the white water, but the images on teevee are too crazy. Be safe.

Good point-maybe I should lend it to one of them. Going off the stuff they talk about, and have lent me, I wouldn't think they would like it. They seem to go for massive romantic dramas-the exact opposite of "Rainbow.."

I came across this earlier in the year, and bought "A Rainbow In Curved Air" by Terry Reilly, which I mentioned at the time. Superb. I don't really think of it as classical music, which I normally associate with orchestras, string quartets or solo piano. Stockhausen is also considered as classical. I actually saw him in London a few years ago prior to a performance of Hymen and Kontakte, two of his electronic scores. I much prefer Rainbow In Curved Air to either of those pieces. There was a vogue in the late 60s early 70s for British progressive rock bands to lean towards classical music. It always seemed to me to be an example of the worst kind of social climbing, managing to upset classical music fans and rockers in equal measure. The Nice and Emerson Lake and Palmer were the worst offenders. Having said that, King Crimson's version of Mars, from Holst's Planet Suite is stonkingly good.

Something of a supergroup, they released 6 albums (on Rounder) that I am aware of, all of which were great. The Sweet Sunny South was Vol. 5. Maybe Garcia learned the song from Tony Rice who was the guitarist in The Bluegrass Album Band. There is a Garcia / Grisman version to be found on "Grateful Dawg: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". It was recorded live at the Warfield Theater, San Francisco on December 7, 1991.

Can't wait to hear these 2 shows for the price of one. Thank god I subscribed to get the bonus disk to get most of the 12/14/71 show. I wonder what was left out from that 12/14 show and if they just don't have the rest of the songs in their archive or decided to leave some songs off because it can't fit on 2 CDs? Either way Keith and Pigpen both in the mix is a great thing.

I'll bet the Bonus Disc / Covers "rule" does not apply when the song is in "public domain" (public domain means the artist and / or their legal entity has been dead / dissolved for x number of years). Maybe Good Lovin' and Smokestack Lightning are public domain tunes.

And sounds like they'll be doing something that they've never done before.... I wonder if that could be a collection of early GD show fragments w/ Pig....

Appeared to be available as I logged in, but now says unavailable. Subscribed, so am all set. Too early for Vol. 27 predictions? They may have to up the number for 2019 and make it an even 20,000. Glad to see the returns aren't quite yet diminishing. For those who missed out, I'm sure plenty of people have bought multiple subscriptions and the ala carte maximum number, so these will be popping up on Ebay, which I'm sure already have. Now onto watching the Seaside Chat....which I see now is actually from the basement.

Interesting video. It sounds like Dave is working on 3 things, in addition to Dave's Picks. Wow! 3 things! I'm going to guess that a mono version of Anthem of the Sun with a white cover on 200 gram vinyl is one of them. My second guess for Dave's thing is a Europe '90 box set. And #3, the thing they've never done anything like it before? It has to be a box of every note played on The Quick and The Dead tour. That is, all the Dead and all the QMS. Oh man....I can't wait!

12-14-71 what's missing here is... after Loser in the first set is Jack Straw, not there, after Next Time you See Me should be a Tennessee Jed, not there, then after Run Run Rudolph should be Black Peter, Playin in the Band and Casey Jones which ends the first set, not there. The second set is all chopped up. We don't get the opening Ramble on Rose or the Mexicali, starts off second set with Big Boss Man, then the entire jam from the second set is missing, Cryptical, Drums, TOO>me and my unkle jam>TOO, Wharf Rat and Sugar Magnolia, all missing. It does have the ending of the second set You Win Again,NFA>GDTRFB>NFA all included. So What's on that bonus disc? Not listed here. let's hope we get the Jack Straw and Tennessee Jed and the big jam from the second set. Gonna take some work to get this disc back in order. Russian Troll? Fake News? Really? Ever try calling in an order? It really is that difficult so not fake news and as far as trolls, Russian or otherwise, right. Fastest sell out to date? Could be a record. Glad I got a copy of this one.

You were obviously targeted for special call center treatment, all in good hell fun. Tell it to the fake President, he'll be all ears. I assume you'll be calling him too, speak English-only when you get his very limited attention. Primary a la carte availabity is pretty sketchy now, wow, but it's alive via secondary sources. This release might struggle to hold $40 on eBay at times in months ahead. Be patient.

Interesting tidbit of info in the video. It can be surmised that the bonus disc will mostly consist of... Tennessee Jed Black Peter Playin' Casey Jones Ramble On rose Mexicali Cryptical Drums Other One MAMU Jam Other One Wharf Rat Sugar Magnolia In the video, Dave says one song is excluded, but the big jam is complete and uninterupted, so it would appears that either Tennessee jed, Black Peter or Casey Jones will be left off. Either no "cocaine", "shackles, ball and chain" or "Sweet Susan" for you....until whenever they decide to officially release the other Ann Arbor show. I can't imagine that one NOT being released at some point, whether as a Dave's Pick or other project. I would consider 12/15/71 an essential show from that year. If you haven't heard it, check it out... https://archive.org/details/gd1971-12-15.sbd.miller.97718.sbeok.flac16 edit - I agree with the following comment, in regards to the Dave's Picks series. The cost of being a consumer of the later era's is considerally higher than the bulk of these smaller one full show releases.

I'm not trying to start a rumor here, but why break up the 2 sets so dramatically? I know Dave likes to keep the jam segment intact, but wasn't there an easier way? Perhaps we will get a surprise on disc 2? Maybe......Dark Star from Ann Arbor? Here's hoping.
