The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

Been on a Dead & Co. listening binge for a day now. Damn, when I'm in the right frame of mind to accept it it's such beautiful stuff... Chimenti and Oteil are virtuosos who never show off, because that would be beneath them. Bob has aged wonderfully, his voice deepened both in range and character. I love him. He carries forward the torch, Jerry's little brother. The drummers, crazy fucks, will probably be the last to die of all the original guys. Like Keith Richards and cockroaches, some things just cannot be killed. John was such the right guy to carry this forward. He has put his whole soul into it and he knows how blessed he is - this is his redemption. He sings better than ever and has such a reverence for this music, yet he's becoming more comfortable stretching out, finding himself in these songs. Love his Friend of the Devil and Brown-Eyed Women. And, of course, his kick-ass guitar playing. When he's on and wailing he holds his own across the board. I love that PRS Super Eagle, it's my dream guitar. Warning: shameless plug forthcoming. https://prsguitars.com/supereagle2/ \m/

Dude, where is my car. Never had that problem leaving a show. Although now I have that experience when I leave a convenience store and the car is right there. I was busy and did not get to post on the anniversary of 1987-03-22, Hampton. I previously posted several times about that show. Once I posted about pulling into the parking lot and parking way out, closer to the entrance than the Shakedown. I was rolling one when a Virginia state police pulled up behind us. Quickly stuff the bag in my pants and got out. State police looked at me and shook his head. I knew it was because we were from so far away. Look down, and the dang baggie is hanging out of my pocket. Anyone that knows Virginia knows that officer was way more gracious than normal, way more. I also posted once about how when we got back to the hotel at about 2am or so, the Exorcist was starting so we watched that while we were way beyond dosed. Once I posted about the amount of energy in the building that night. It was Jerry alive and back on the East coast again. Just crowd in full on joy and energy that even got more crazy the next night. But where is my car nah. How about where is my hotel. We normally stayed at the Strawberry Banks when in Hampton or right down street from the coliseum at the Days Inn I think. This night for one night we had a room further north than the Strawberry Banks. We left knowing where we were. But coming back, we got lost. Lost in a circle. We knew the hotel was right there. We would get off of the interstate could not find and then go back down the interstate, turn around and try again. We made this 5-7 mile circle 5 or 6 times before we finally found the hotel. It was right where we left it. Thing is, there was a hill there and when we got off of the interstate we werent driving far enough to top the hill and see the hotel. Now this is what is weird, we were so relieved to find the hotel, the Exorcist was a piece of cake. Ahhh good times, well except the panic of being in that circle...

....how about finding the keys to the car? I think i've told this story before, but its pretty funny. Me and three other friends drove up to see the Monterey shows in '88. After the shows, we were packing up the tents, etc, getting ready to walk back to where we parked the car in the lot. Couldn't find the keys. Panic ensued. Spent a couple hours scouring the camping area and personal belongings to no avail. We asked each other when the last time anyone saw them. Shrugged shoulders all around. Security starting moving towards up to tell us we had to leave. Major panic attack. My buddy the sheepishly held them out in his hand. "Where where they!?!" "In my back pocket." ....

Believe me, the locker room talk here is not bad. And I've been reading these forms for years, just not posting. But I did get so enthusiastic about not having to buy the bonus disc off of eBay I thought I would join conversation.

Dave, Glad you revisited those shows. They have always been among my favorites. I've said before that I consider disk 4 to be one of the greatest single CDs the band has ever released. The ending of 2/18/71 was on Siris radio this week. Don't dismiss those Cap shows too quickly.

I have been meaning to ask for some time, VGuy.. First.. when Cumberland comes up it usually shakes you out of your slumber.. I recall you commenting that it was Cumberland Blues that pulled you into the orbit and got you on the bus. Do you recall which one? Re: GFar.. I was wondering who borrowed the riding mower and parked it haphazardly on my tulip bed.

Nice to see you on board. Once you subscribe, you'll never go back. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on the crucially important philosophical dilemmas we grapple with here such as: 1) What will the next box set be? 1a) Why is it from that year instead of this other year that I was hoping for? 2) What will the next Dave's Pick be? 2b) Why wasn't it that other show from that same tour? 3) WTF is Bolo's last post all about? 4) What about Gainesville? If anyone is looking for a "palate cleanser" today -- check out WWOZ out of N'Awlins. They're playing live sets from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival all day long. I want to be there soooo badly right now. Mrs. Deadguy is out shopping for some andouille sausage as I write this. Still don't have 26 yet. But I do have every single April 71 show now thanks to Doc. So I guess that'll tide me over.

I am extremely impressed with this one lady. I am certain she may be the only fan that actually saw every Grateful Dead show. That is impressive. Now I haven't checked every show, but the few I have checked across years, she is there. Congrats! My lady. Maybe some one here actually knows her, her name is dubai-escorts-bunnies. I know it has been discussed some before. But I am shocked to see so much video coming out. I need to spend more time checking youtube for video. I have no idea how much, maybe someone here can enlighten me, wish voodoonola was one of our posters. Not sure how much of E72 was filmed, but I would be interested in buying some official video. If they filmed all of it, what a great investment in themselves and their progeny. I doubt they filmed it all because of the same budgetary constraints related to Sunshine Daydream. If memory serves, it was the same crew on E72 that filmed sunshine daydream, like E72 was a test hit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn8XBEGt6-w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5jn58DZ6Fw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOTWLpSUBM8

I have always loved the Cumberland Blues on this set-everything about it is picture perfect. I am not sure which show it is from, but I think its the 28th. Jack-2/18/71 is my favourite of those Portchester shows-and maybe I will give it another listen after I've finished the April shows. I would also agree that the 4th cd in this set features some of the best playing of their life.

Yeah, with combining tracks from officially released shows there are sound differences and other anamolies. For example 10/19/74 the bulk of tracks come from The GD Movie soundtrack, with some from Steal Your Face. Those two releases sound different. Also the Eyes on the movie soundtrack is edited so that one of the jams is taken out but then it does segue way into China Doll. However the full Eyes is on Disc 3 from the So Many Roads box. For things like that it boils down each person's preference I would think. For me, I want the full Eyes as I think that version is outstanding so I have that in my playlist. The downside is that it breaks in the playlist before China Doll. Obvoiusly the way to avoid all of this is just go and get a nice SBD of the whole show. Still I find this piecing shows together project as fun. Kind of like an Deadead Indiana Jones...minus all of danger of course.

Gary I agree with you Voodoonola is awesome. He/she has uploaded so many videos it blows my mind. Along with Charlie Miller, Voodonola are two people I bow to in gratitude for their contributions to the GD community. Of course I can't forget the tapers and the filmers. I can't believe how much was recorded. So many sources of shows out there for all us to enjoy. However it is especially cool to me when there is video.

Rogue - you forgot 1 topic for Hippychic: last 5 listens which Simonrob contributed to earlier. I'm always interested in what others listen to. Hippychic - welcome aboard The Board! Daverock - try re-sequencing Ladies & Gentlemen (or for that matter DP7 / Go To Nassau or any comps.); I did so and wound up with 2 more (completely fictious) shows. Granted they never happened but it's fun to make up a complete set list. If you want a 1st set big jam you can do it since it's your show. I couldn't listen to DP7 for years due to the sequencing but rearranged the songs to better reflect a Dead show. It's in regular rotation now.

I was going through trying to order these shows correctly, and it appears that Ramble On Rose is the only song out of order for 11/17/71. The setlists I've found online show it as being the encore, but it's stuck between Saturday Night and Sugar Mags at the end of set 1. Either way, it would be on Disc 2, so I can't figure out why it was switched. Also, unless I'm incorrect, Ramble On Rose is the only song missing from 12/14/71. There's something spooky going on here with that song.....just like Frankenstein. Anyway... I gave number 11258 (and bonus disc) a first listen last night and really enjoyed both shows. It's pretty interesting hearing the contrast with/without Pigpen on very similar setlists a month apart. Looking forward to listening to this pair more closely in the coming days and hearing the Ann Arbor show in the proper order.

That’s Grate because tracking says expected delivery 5/1. Hope they’re not toying with me.Still a few hours before the postal worker arrives. In the meantime, Dark Side of the Moon on 180g vinyl. Last 5 4-26-72 The Kinks - One for the Road, used vinyl ZZ Top - El Loco, used vinyl Moody Blues - In Search of the Lost Chord,, used vinyl ZZ Top - Fandango, used vinyl. Took a dive into used vinyl, overall they sound mediocre. I washed them with an official record cleaning solution but that barely helped, so I used dish soap and water and that got them cleaner but they still have a lot of pops and crackles. El Loco also has scratches you can’t see but the needle still gets stuck. They also feel quite flimsy compared to 180g vinyl. Don’t think I’ll waste any more money on used vinyl. Out for delivery today also is Rush - Exit Stage Left, 200g vinyl Who - Leeds, don’t know the mass of vinyl used for this one. Oh, Side 1 just finished, time to flip the record. “Money, get away.....” Think I’ll spin Animals next.

I like that idea about re-sequencing shows. Ladies and Gentlemen.. always sounds a bit like two first sets, followed by two second sets. And after all, Live Dead was recorded from different shows to create a seamless flow of music. And it works perfectly. My last 5 listens have been; Ladies and Gentlemen...The Grateful Dead April 1971 Face To Face-mono cd The Kinks Rubber Soul-mono cd The Beatles KSAN San Francisco 4/30/70 blu ray Pink Floyd Live in Plymouth 5/11/71 King Crimson Stuck in the past? Me?

I have a good soundboard of this show that includes Ramble On Rose. I have it as lossless .wav, it's about 65 MB. Its probably not worth the effort for me to convert it to m4a or mp3, just about everything plays wav files and it's not hard to convert to whatever you want it as.. PM me if your interested, I'm happy to send it on.

I just finished an uninterrupted listen of 11/17. It kicks some serious ass. The two words that come to mind are Instant Classic. In just one afternoon it has risen to one of the best shows of the series in my mind and I haven't began to dissect or give it multiple listens. The recording is simply amazing and the performance is a powerhouse. Rex.. if you're up there listening, many thanks. VGuy.. the Cumberland sizzles and The Other One is other worldly. What a great show and what a great release. Thanks to all.

And we're going to spin it Sunday afternoon in the woodsy foothills outside Golden, Colo., with the finest a garden here can produce and a few well-chilled ales. I hope forensicdoc is happy with these pics -- the discs are packed to the gills with 75-79 minutes of music each. Naturally we'll start with the Ann Arbor show, due to Pigpen's return. Shameless plug: the subscription really is a great idea, particularly when Dave heads back to '71. Still rooting for Summer '73 box later this year........

Right. I am still slack jawed from the first listen. This is WowWow stuff.. I went with a crew and did 10 miles on the local river listening to it on good headphones through a waterproof system.. I kept paddling away from my friends because I wanted it cranked and didn't want to have to talk to anyone. Play it loud. It simply wowed me.. perhaps I was just in a good mood or something but they seemed truly inspired, everyone was on time and in tune and they came to play. The sound is exactly perfect. This blows the hell out of what currently circulates.

I bought this, back in the 1970s, but foolishly sold it some years later. I can remember it had all sorts of cool inserts.Another high energy album I sold at the same time was "Kick Out The Jams" by the MC5. Another blistering, high energy album. In fact its probably the closet a contemporaneous American band got to channelling the kind of energy that The Who did. The songs may not be as good- but it kicks ass.

Step away from the vinyl... out of the rabbit hole into the sunlight. Seriously great audio/recording here for almost fifty years old, excellent mix, clarity and balance. You will hear everyone clean and clear. Even sibilants are silky smooth, not always the case in older recordings. Listening on thirty year old Klipsch, horns, sounds absolutely wonderful. Biding time music yesterday was disc three of GD movie soundtrack, a sweet wonderful jam into DS into Dew on 10/18/74. Now back on the shelf to be almost forgotten with DaP 26 arrived... and am only on the first disc. Thanks bunches to DL and the folks that make this happen, we have another winner. Cumberland so fine... Jerry says, don't applaud until you've had some. More, please.

My DaP 26 has been delivered but I won't be back home to pick it up for almost a month. In the meantime, super happy that, for once, it seems that it is almost all (or maybe all) POSITIVE FEEDBACK!! I do enjoy all posts even some of those that are critical of some performances, etc., but I do have to say I find more negativity than I sometimes would like to see - whether's its 80s bashing, Brent bashing, too many 70s shows released bashing or whatever. I don't really always understand it - given that I always assume that anyone who posts here actually loves the band and its music. 23 years on from 1995, we should be more Grateful that the releases keep coming IMHO. Also be Grateful that the band seems to pick up more fans over time, and that will help keep releases coming. Also, also be Grateful that there is lots of Vault left to mine!! Very very pleased to read so many positive reviews for once. I do think the band was flying on all cylinders in Oct-Dec 71 - Keith was playing awesome, as was Billy, as were Bob and Jerry. Also Phil kicks it on background vocals and is typically very clear in the mix. Can't wait to hear Dap26 when I get back!!

No news from Doc. That can only mean one thing. There's burning, looting and deadly shooting in the sunshine state.. and somebody's got to stick around to clean up the mess and make sense of it all. I did get a rare PM from him after this was announced.. something to the effect that he has always had a high opinion of this show and considering the reported sonic upgrade, that he was stoked. So it came pre-approved by the good doctor. I'd be surprised if we don't hear from him during his next 5 am pint of surely high octane coffee.

They REALLY open the valve right up in Set Two, don't they? Start to finish a great show unto itself. Even if this was just a two disc set of 11/17/71 it would have been worth the $30. This was my first year subscribing, never skipping out on that again. Best investment I have made in years. As soon as we are done with the final rotation of Disc 2 for the final time today...I think...I think I can move on to Disc 3. Then maybe 4. Maybe. DaP26 in the top 5 DaP releases overall, for sure.
