The unexpected return of the masters of the Grateful Dead's triumphant show at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, November 17, 1971, yields great rewards. The Dead came in HOT for their first New Mexico show. Aided by clarity and precision and abetted by confidence and focus, they finessed old standards with definitive takes. With Keith now blending in seamlessly on keys, the first set offered up a triple shot of electric Blues, an exceptional "You Win Again," and a stellar "One More Saturday Night" to wrap things up. And the second set, well, it might just be unlike any you've ever heard. Archivist David Lemieux urges you to turn it up and do it loudly. We won't dare spoil all the surprises, but pay special attention to the rippin' "Sugar Magnolia," the aggressively monstrous "The Other One," and the highly-danceable "Not Fade>GDTRFB>Not Fade." Rounding out the 3CDs, you'll find selections from Pigpen's return tour at Ann Arbor, MI, 12/14/71. Subscribers will get nearly all of the complete show as this year's bonus disc.

As always, Dave's Picks Volume 26 has been mastered to HDCD specs from the original analog tapes by Jeffrey Norman and is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

Now THAT is tempting...I didn't realize it was still in print. Maybe it was a different / older Dead Base version I heard was out of print? In any case, I've never seen one of these or looked too closely at the content covered. On the one hand it may be time; on the other hand, I still haven't finished the book that came with 30 Trips, or even started the Cornell box set book. And I didn't finish Dennis McNally's Long Strange Trip book. It's a time thing. But this here Dead Base book looks more like a reference utility, so I may just convince myself....

Hey Dark-Star, thank you for the lead in for that DaP 5 on ebay. I just went on there, found it, and hopefully I will end up with it at the auctions end. I know it's a great show and if I already have 11/17/71, 11/17/72, then I have to have 11/17/73 in my collection. It will complete my birthday show run. Thanks!

Like most, I was temporally disappointed that we had to do our own configuring for the 12/14/71 show with bonus. Dave so eloquently explained to all, and it does make sense (or cents). Like Thin, the 71' Austin RT's is one of my all time faves. A true rocker. As Dave reports, Albuquerque seems to be in the same greasy vein. Deadbase has a good write-up of the 12/15/71 Ann Arbor show. ( Check it out) SpaceBro alerted me (us) to the show, and it does appear to be quite excellent. (Heavy on the Pig slop!) Dave just might think 12/15 is a superior show to 12/14, but is able to give us 12/14 in chop suey fashion. Maybe 12/15 will be a future Dave's Picks; (if the master has also come home) possibly, as early as next year. Then we will (would) have a great accompaniment to 12/14. Again, thank you Dave and all the rest. What wonderful music keeps coming our way. Maybe big box news in the next few weeks? Great to be a Dead Head!!!! Sam T

Who Are You / DP 35 Set List
I see the Who won't die here, and Patagonian Fox made some album rankings. Got me thinking about Who Are You. This record continues to be one of my favorites. Quadrophenia is my all time favorite, and pretty much has been since I got it for Christmas in 1984. Who Are You is my second favorite; I like it better than Who's Next as a whole, but I know Who's Next is a better representation of the band (and Baba O'Riley is in fact, my favorite song ever, by anyone). But with regard to Who Are You, I don't care much for Love Is Coming Down, but the rest of it is fantastic, and to me, sounds much more like the next step in evolution from Quadrophenia (more so than The Who By Numbers, due in part to the synths). All this, despite the fact that things are very clearly not well with Moon. It's also the last outstanding record for Daltrey as a vocalist (he was merely great on the succeeding records). And now for something completely unrelated - I'm not familiar with the Deadbase book - does it contain set lists? If so, can someone post the set list from 8/24/71? Wikipedia says that DP 35 does not contain the entire show from this date at the Auditorium Theatre; however, I've come across several set lists that indicate DP 35 is all there was, and that it was played in the order presented on DP 35. I also came across a site that list this as the set list - note the order is much different than the DP 35 presentation: Set 1: Big Railroad Blues Playin' In The Band Mr. Charlie Sugaree El Paso Next Time You See Me Bertha Me And Bobby McGee Set 2: Big Boss Man Loser Bird Song Cryptical Envelopment Drums The Other One Me And My Uncle The Other One Wharf Rat Cold Rain And Snow Deal Brokedown Palace Empty Pages Brown-Eyed Women Good Lovin' If there is an official source with the set list, I'd love to know which is correct.

Can't wait to hear these 2 shows for the price of one. Thank god I subscribed to get the bonus disk to get most of the 12/14/71 show. I wonder what was left out from that 12/14 show and if they just don't have the rest of the songs in their archive or decided to leave some songs off because it can't fit on 2 CDs? Either way Keith and Pigpen both in the mix is a great thing.

I'll bet the Bonus Disc / Covers "rule" does not apply when the song is in "public domain" (public domain means the artist and / or their legal entity has been dead / dissolved for x number of years). Maybe Good Lovin' and Smokestack Lightning are public domain tunes.

I'm no copyright law expert by any means, but I was under the assumption that the public domain songs are listed as "Traditional, arranged by..."? The 1st Dave's Picks bonus disc has Nobody's Fault But Mine...and that one is listed as such.

Appeared to be available as I logged in, but now says unavailable. Subscribed, so am all set. Too early for Vol. 27 predictions? They may have to up the number for 2019 and make it an even 20,000. Glad to see the returns aren't quite yet diminishing. For those who missed out, I'm sure plenty of people have bought multiple subscriptions and the ala carte maximum number, so these will be popping up on Ebay, which I'm sure already have. Now onto watching the Seaside Chat....which I see now is actually from the basement.

Interesting video. It sounds like Dave is working on 3 things, in addition to Dave's Picks. Wow! 3 things! I'm going to guess that a mono version of Anthem of the Sun with a white cover on 200 gram vinyl is one of them. My second guess for Dave's thing is a Europe '90 box set. And #3, the thing they've never done anything like it before? It has to be a box of every note played on The Quick and The Dead tour. That is, all the Dead and all the QMS. Oh man....I can't wait!

12-14-71 what's missing here is... after Loser in the first set is Jack Straw, not there, after Next Time you See Me should be a Tennessee Jed, not there, then after Run Run Rudolph should be Black Peter, Playin in the Band and Casey Jones which ends the first set, not there. The second set is all chopped up. We don't get the opening Ramble on Rose or the Mexicali, starts off second set with Big Boss Man, then the entire jam from the second set is missing, Cryptical, Drums, TOO>me and my unkle jam>TOO, Wharf Rat and Sugar Magnolia, all missing. It does have the ending of the second set You Win Again,NFA>GDTRFB>NFA all included. So What's on that bonus disc? Not listed here. let's hope we get the Jack Straw and Tennessee Jed and the big jam from the second set. Gonna take some work to get this disc back in order. Russian Troll? Fake News? Really? Ever try calling in an order? It really is that difficult so not fake news and as far as trolls, Russian or otherwise, right. Fastest sell out to date? Could be a record. Glad I got a copy of this one.

You were obviously targeted for special call center treatment, all in good hell fun. Tell it to the fake President, he'll be all ears. I assume you'll be calling him too, speak English-only when you get his very limited attention. Primary a la carte availabity is pretty sketchy now, wow, but it's alive via secondary sources. This release might struggle to hold $40 on eBay at times in months ahead. Be patient.

Interesting tidbit of info in the video. It can be surmised that the bonus disc will mostly consist of... Tennessee Jed Black Peter Playin' Casey Jones Ramble On rose Mexicali Cryptical Drums Other One MAMU Jam Other One Wharf Rat Sugar Magnolia In the video, Dave says one song is excluded, but the big jam is complete and uninterupted, so it would appears that either Tennessee jed, Black Peter or Casey Jones will be left off. Either no "cocaine", "shackles, ball and chain" or "Sweet Susan" for you....until whenever they decide to officially release the other Ann Arbor show. I can't imagine that one NOT being released at some point, whether as a Dave's Pick or other project. I would consider 12/15/71 an essential show from that year. If you haven't heard it, check it out... https://archive.org/details/gd1971-12-15.sbd.miller.97718.sbeok.flac16 edit - I agree with the following comment, in regards to the Dave's Picks series. The cost of being a consumer of the later era's is considerally higher than the bulk of these smaller one full show releases.

I'm not trying to start a rumor here, but why break up the 2 sets so dramatically? I know Dave likes to keep the jam segment intact, but wasn't there an easier way? Perhaps we will get a surprise on disc 2? Maybe......Dark Star from Ann Arbor? Here's hoping.
