    The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

    For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

    PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

    Thanks, it’s always nice when someone can relate, especially adding your live experiences. As great as these SB recordings are, I’ve never heard one that sounded like what the show sounded like live in the venue, (usually in front of the mixing board, or even in the front row).... Used to be a musician in a past life too, and though great recordings can be made, dry, direct only or close miked instruments do not sound quite the same as the live sound in the venue. Of course mic tapes can be adversely effected by your position and the venue, your gear, technique and of course your neighbors...... JJEEEEEEERRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYY DAAAAAAAARRRRRRKKKKKKKKK SSSSTTTTTTAAAARRRR LOL always durning the most subtle, quiet, emotional ballad ; ) A&A: yasss that could really be the best for the DG “treatment”. Everyone always thinks of the PITB or Scarlets, which sometimes work, but playing especially, like with this box, can sometimes be a bit too much re-entry shall we say. First, we brought you the entire Dick’s Picks series of live concerts on CD, all 36 volumes of it, many of them never before available at retail. Then we began putting out the Road Trips series, none of which has ever been in stores before. But now, dear Deadheads and Real Goners, the time has come to take the next step in our evolution as a key source for rare Grateful Dead recordings. It’s time to cross…the vinyl frontier. And we are hoping you will cross it with us, because we aren’t even offering this release to retail until you have had a chance—at a special low price—to snag all 1500 hand-numbered, limited editions of our new 6-LP set, Grateful Dead: Dick’s Picks Vol. 34—Rochester, NY 11/5/77! That’s right…we are finally putting Dick’s Picks on vinyl, and, boy, have we picked the right one. How do we know? You told us! This was by far the best-selling volume on CD from our reissue campaign. And no wonder, it’s from that magical year of 1977, with fiery performances of “Big River,” “Jack Straw,” “Deal,” and “Eyes of the World” powered by a particularly lively Phil Lesh. But for many the highlight will be one of the truly great performances of “The Other One” in the Grateful Dead catalog, 12 minutes of surging intensity and building crescendos. This Pick also included highlights from a 11/2/77 Toronto show, including a great medley of “Estimated Prophet”/”St. Stephen”/”Truckin’”/”Around and Around” (we’ve reconfigured the track listing to put all the bonus tracks at the end of the set for a seamless concert experience). Definitely a great place to begin our journey into the realm of Grateful Dead vinyl! Such a stellar performance deserves a great package with great sound. For this Real Gone release, we’ve enlisted David Glasser at Airshow Mastering to remaster the set for vinyl. David’s had a long association with the Dead; he mastered the soundtrack to last year’s Long Strange Trip documentary among many other projects. For lacquer cutting, we turned to John Golden at Golden Mastering. John has worked with artists as far-ranging as Jonathan Wilson, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and Soundgarden among many others, and he is our go-to engineer for lacquer cutting. The test pressings were approved by David Glasser, the Grateful Dead’s resident audiovisual archivist David Lemieux, and Gordon Anderson from Real Gone. We’ve pressed the set up on 180-gram vinyl for maximum fidelity, too. And we even scrapped the first pressing because it wasn’t up to our quality standards. As for the packaging, we’ve placed all six LPs inside a hardshell box adorned with the original front cover and a custom back cover featuring a great shot of Jerry Garcia from the show. Inside, you’ll find a 4-page, LP-sized, full-color insert offering photos from the original package along with the original trippy graphics. And, as we mentioned before, each of these limited-edition sets is hand-numbered all the way up to 1500. This set will not be repressed once we run out of the 1500 limited edition copies.

    I appreciate the breakdown of all the factors that go to the Donna problem.If i may add: I went to many many 70's shows (and then some). Not once did she sound so off, or shrill, as the tapes make it appear nowadays. No one ever left a show criticizing Donna for her 'screams'. Maybe the live loudness of the auditoriums kept it at bay somewhat but nobody who was there was complaining at the time. And some of the best pure rock 'n roll girl screaming i've ever heard was on 'Round & 'Round !!

    ....I like her, but to be honest, when she unloads one of those screeches, my dogs always give each other the "WTF was that!!" look.

    I would agree that her greatest moments with the Dead were when she was singing back up. I am thinking particularly of the post retirement Looks Like Rains. Actually, all of the Dead were at their best when they were tightly enmeshed in the whole. Take any one member out of that whole and they always sounded-and probably still do-somewhat diminished.

    When I was younger I usually liked the screaming, but have less and less tolerance for it as years go by.That being said, let us remeber ... - Bob can be just as bad on occasion - They are hearing themselves through completely different equipment in a completely different context. I guarantee if you heard much of this live it would not be as prominent and thus not as bad...especially since she was often turned way up to try and make her be heard, which does not translate well to direct recorded tape. Just listen to E72 shows for a better idea of a well balanced vocal mix including DG. - Women often don’t have the same power as men to sing or yell loudly enough so they, and sometimes Bob strain or extend themselves which doesn’t usually sound good, You can even find examples of ol Jer too. (This is not sexist. Some women have a thin or higher range that is harder to be LOUD is all I meant) obviouslly there are many great women singers that have super powerful voices, just not all) - DG obviously could sing or would not have gotten work as a studio singer. In fact most of the work she does with the dead in the studio was awesome. Some folks, and perhaps some women have a harder time singing live in really loud R&R bands. She as well as the rest have admitted as much. - Personally, I’ve rarely heard a female vocalist that meshed well with the dead. Even post dead etc. I did really like that Garcia gal that sang backups in Futhur. Something about the boys to me made it tough for women to mesh, any era...I’m sure there are occasional exceptions, but generally speaking.... - Donna imho was a way better when she was more of a secondary, back up singer (in the dead). I know many feel she was better in the post hiatus band, and in some ways she was. I believe they made monitor/gear and position changes that helped. I think time also helped her learn the material and mesh better. As some mention, the stuff she did that they learned after she joined is often better for her than the “old” stuff they learned before her. But to me, she like some of the other “non-core” dead members over the years were better as secondary players. I didnt always like when they start having these folks become full on participants. But that’s just my worthless OPINION. - Board Recordings. Yes there are some truly jarring instances on this box where it’s tough to take, but that’s more because of technical variables and the idiosyncrasies of SB recordings as much as DG herself. Unfortunately the human mind often focuses on very different, jarring, scary sounds more than soft or soothing. If all you listen for is the ugly stuff, yeah, your not going to like DG. But if you move past that stuff and concentrate on the other, perhaps less dramatic stuff she did, she can be indeed very sweet. - Intoxication;in fact, and as she herself has said, intoxication can often be very detrimental to singing. Hell all music can be sometimes be affected negatively, look what happened to Jer...... Finally, ive talked to a few people who have had a chance to meet her and all have said she is truly a very nice person. So before one is tempted to be negative and perhaps even say something hateful, consider the big picture and all that was involved......

    Took a break from listening to the box set….to listen to more grateful dead. I dove into 11/17/72 (DaP 11). This has got to be a top 5 pick. One of the best bird song’s of all time, and perhaps the all-time He’s Gone>Truckin>TOO....wow this is a great one.

Just like the Cornell Box, I already have more than half of these concerts. Gotta do it tho. Better quality is always much better. And I won't have to listen to things like "has anyone seen my hairbrush?"

According to DeadBase, these are the only 3 times The Dead played Money, Money. I will wait till September to officially rank them. Cannot remember why they put this song to bed so quickly. Of course, there may not be a reason. I need to be more open minded next time Bolo starts throwing around clues. I tend to let my mind limit my thinking to shows or box sets I want to see released, rather than letting the clues lead me to the promised land. I was thinking Ark 69' (maybe next year on the 50th anniversary) All this said, I am super excited about this box! Wonderful music indeed. Sam T

After the mammoth Thirty Trips set I assured my wife that I wouldn't be buying anymore of these elaborate Dead box sets. However, this one was too tasty looking to resist! Besides I have almost three months to figure out how I'll sneak it into the house without my wife noticing. LOL!

this set will be top notch PITB 6.26.73 is smokin hot I have been traveling, last song I remember hearing was a 1974 Ship of Fools and was thinking another release with 1974 Ship of Fools would be excellent, a day later and here is this box set, nice timing Rhino, but I'm broke lol Speeding ticket in New York is a pretty penny. Don't sell out on me too fast hahah

Forgot about that one. If I'm not mistaken, I think it was actually Johanns (plural). That goes with Bachs, which sounds like box. So, box plus 6 over 2 means the box is 6 shows over 2 years. I know, I'm odd.

These were perhaps the easiest set of clues yet. It's no wonder it leaked.. we all, more or less, had this one pegged. Excited for this one too. This scratches my itch. One other thing. We are seeing our first four disc show in a while (since 2012 I think), but there quite a few returned 4 disc shows believed to now be in the vault. I believe this will be the model for their release perhaps for the next decade or so. I really don't see them being Dave's Picks.. even including them as the bonus disc would really turn people off and create a lot of piss and vinegar. (unless I'm wrong, of course. :D )

Wasn't that set released on the 40th anniversary of the tour, in 2012? I'm getting old, can't remember shit anymore.. but I have an uncanny, almost rain man like ability to decipher bolo clues. Yes, I meant four disc single shows, not two shows on a DaP where the bonus disc makes it all possible. People would revolt and storm the vault if they made disc 4 of 6/10/73 the bonus disc. Dave would be treated no better than Louis XVI.

Right you are, Senator. It was 2011, the year I spent wandering around the desert looking for my car keys... I sort of block that period out. Has anyone ever lost their car at a show? I sure have.. on the bright side.. by the time you find it you are usually ok to drive. ..or as the guy from the Grateful Dead Movie would say, "I'm just trying to get my space together before I find my car and leave the show"

Looking forward to this newest addition to my collection. Have not heard any of these shows before, and will not listen in advance. I still like hearing a "new release" fresh out of the shrink wrap. As always, thanks to Dave and everyone else involved for keeping this 50+ year trip alive. I always chuckle about the bickering between over what should and should not be released......I have and will continue to purchase every NOTE of this exquisite band!

Will be interesting to hear one of the 74 shows from this boxset vs the Missoula show from an audio quality perspective to see if there's a huge audio upgrade wow factor. If so, I hope TPTB release plangent worthy upgrades to boxsets only so we get much better upgrades since they typically don't do the Plangent on Dick's / RT / Dave's releases. Obviously I would love to have the plangent on all digital releases.

Early this week I was listening to Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami, FL (6/23/74)from Cosmic Charlie (Grateful Dead Hunter's Trix Vol 69) and was thinking a 74 box would be perfect. I hope 6/23/74 is in the vault. Very sweet 74 Dark Star.

5/19/74 is a long time favorite; I'm ashamed to say I've never had the other shows in my collection (although I've listened to 6/22/73 on the Archive). What an embarrassment of riches 1973 is. So much left to be mined from this glorious year (2/9, 2/15, 3/16, 3/26, 5/26, 6/10, 8/1, 10/25, 12/18 are the big ones that spring to mind). I guess they'll need several more boxes to finish it off! As for '74, other than 2/23 and 6/23, theres no other big obvious ones (only 40 shows that year!) unless you make an argument for 6/30 or going back and doing full-show releases of DP12, GD Movie, RT2.3, and DP31. Since we've had Dave's Picks or Box Set shows from 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1978, and 1989 all in the last year, we could be up for something really different for DP28; my money is on something from June '76. Otherwise we could be going Primal or into the 80s!

I don't believe Dave's Picks typically gets the Plangent Processes treatment. If a show has it, it will be credited on the liner notes. I just checked the latest Dave's Picks and there is no mention. I would be surprised if they are all not pitch corrected at this point.. but they seem to save this special treatment for box sets and special projects. That's my understanding, if anyone out there knows different, feel free to comment.

I've been a long time lurker here. I probably visited once every couple weeks. It's not easy to catch up with all the posts at that rate, but that's all I was really interested in. Something changed in me in the last 3 months. I bought that Europe 72 shows and completely felt no need to listen to any other band. I've been listening to the Grateful Dead for 15 years, I like complete shows, and I like the 70s most especially when it was just one drummer Bill the drummer. I am a completest for 60s and 70s. Some early 80s is okay to me. Won't get into the reasons why, but I sure you I've listened to it all and I'm simply sticking with what sounds best in my personal taste. What I came here to post is that I am so glad that I did not listen to the sound boards that I have of these shows from the Northwest box set. I've had them all in decent quality for a long time, but like some others who have mentioned it on here, I've been saving my last virgin orifice, my ears for the official releases. I did not always feel that way, but I think I ruined the excitement of get shown the light box set, by listening to all of those shows way before they were ever released. I am so looking forward to hearing the shows for the first time after Jeff Norman and plangent processes has made them ready for consumption. And it's funny, I've almost overcome the temptation to listen to these soundboards, especially when the June 10th 1973 I was going around, but I never make it past the song or two after which I decide I should be listening to an official release. I know there are others who feel the same way going by previous posts here. It has paid off for me this time. I can't wait for September what I can listen Like a Virgin and play diddle diddle my cat and my middle ;-)

I guess I didn't mind a Dap from '73 or '74 but I really wanted these years to be saved for boxset's because of Plangent Processes(Dave explains how much better they sound in his seaside chat).

Given all the hassle I had with trying(and failing )to get the "Get shown the light" box set delivered to me, plus the huge delay in getting the DP cd's, I decided to go straight to the digital download. (also, I only ever listen to music from my PC or on my ipod) so it makes sense to me. I don't reckon the art work, liner notes etc will be worth the big price difference. I already have all these shows downloaded onto my PC & ipod so can thoroughly recommend them. I buy them because I feel it is doing right by the band and their families. I download from internet warchives, but always replace the shows when they get released. I own all the Dicks &Dave's picks, Download series, Road Trips from 60's & 70's and May 77,Get shown the light and Europe 72. So, inthe same spirit, I will delete my Internet Archive recordings once these shows get released. I,too am wondering how much sound will improve as. I know from many IA soundboards, the quality nowadays is as good as DP/DaP /RT releases.Still, always something more to live for and look forward too. [June 9&10 1973; June 23&24 1974 Jai Al Fronton shows. The other parts of the Dick's Picks vol. 7 shows. 26/5/73 Kezar Stadium(oh please,please this one)......and on and on. Thanks for posting - I was beginning to look at song counts.... I was surprised to realize that in addition to only 1 Dark Star, the box has only 2 Other Ones (both in '73). In '72 these 2 songs alternated every other night as the "big jam". By 1974 these 2 songs were much less frequent: only 5 Dark Stars and I'm just realizing only 8 Other Ones. The three '74 shows have neither Dark Star OR Other One, which surprises me. This is part of the reason I prefer '72 and '73 to 1974: Not as much a fan of the setlists, relatively speaking. The jams often launch from Truckin' and Playing in the Band (both waaay down the totem of my fav songs) instead of Dark Star/Other One. Plus they added U.S Blues, Must Have Been the Roses and Phil&Ned in heavy rotation.... not my fav's.... Fun fact: Money Money was only played live at 3 shows: the three '74 shows in this box.

i doubt the box will sell out before june 27th. this box set seems like a cash grab. i don't understand why they decided to release it as one giant box instead of two smaller boxes ('73 & '74). could it be they're worried that as time passes fewer people will be alive to pay top dollar for live grateful dead? i'm going to wait on this box until i know whether i really want it. if the compilation album contained a "ship of fools" i'd probably purchase it instead of the box. ----

Looks like all of us are in for a "very" nice musical treat. These shows will be sonically as good as one could hope for. I have spent a lot of time reading about the Plangent process and it is amazing. If you are in doubt read what they are saying about Springsteen's "Born To Run" project using Plangent.I am sure people will "bitch and complain" about something to do with this set. It will be MUCH better than cassette tapes! The artwork looks...amazing! Dave and his staff has done and excellent job. Looking forward to September when I can put a cd into my player, light up my pipe, pour a cold beer into a glass..and sit back and....enjoy! Again...Dave...Norman...et.al...Thanks!! Definitely want this, but have been hit with another financial hardship. Hope it doesn't sell out before i can afford to acquire a copy. That 45 minute "Playing" from the 6th show and the fact that nothing from that Summer '73 has been released yet, makes this very enticing. Been really digging into this era a lot lately.

...it's only summer 73, whatever...not even really worth it at all, "it's just a cash grab." What!?! :) ...Personal preferences aside and to each their own but seriously, I'm sure that Dave wants to hear this in full sonic glory as much as we do. I think you would be hard-pressed to find the majority of deadfreaks list this amazing box as a "cash grab." "Did you just cash grab my ass? That would be impossible Mr. Zadir, I'm all the way over here."

I think the fact they dropped it after 3 attempts implies that none should be considered GOAT - "Greatest" implies greatness, which this song never achieved. Some songs just didn't work live.... like Let Me Sing Your Blues Away and 'Til the Morning Comes....

easy ordering, easy decision. These are some fine Dead shows here folks, maybe only 1 Dark Star and 2 Other Ones but they are good ones, and quite possibly the best version of Bird Song ever, definitely in the top 3 of all time. I am happy with this release, oversized shipping sized box and all. I did not pull the trigger on that T shirt, it's not limited and I think it will be around for a while if I change my mind. I am not familiar with the 5/17/74 show and it's always good to hear "new" dead music. Looking at the set list for this show, there is no real big jam and that's probably why I have not heard it. That's what attracted me to the Dead, the improvisational jams and space trucking mind melts that only the Grateful Dead can deliver. I too, prefer 73 to 74 but I am looking forward to all these shows. It will be a great September.
