"We were in the Pacific Northwest...between somewhere in Washington and some other where in Oregon. The road took us to the lip on a ridge, from where we could see around us for many miles in all directions … It was breathtaking to behold, but as we watched, we had a firm realization that we were witnessing something even more beautiful than our eyes could ever take in … Life causes life. Heaven and Earth dance in this way endlessly, and their child is the forest. And so there we were, epiphanously watching that grandest and most glorious dance of life—of which we are just a tiny part—awed by a magnificence without beginning, without end..."

Bob Weir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now too.

    Get it while you can.

Random distraction.. Against my usually correct instincts.. I got pulled into a pre-order for tickets the day I got my tax refund this last spring.. and scored two tickets to see Steely Dan in a quant vaudeville theatre in Pittsburg last night. I had this strange feeling that it just wouldn't be the same after the passing of Walter Becker.. but I pulled the trigger nonetheless. Had a great time.. they still have it. The last time I saw them, it was a 13 piece band with three backup singers, two guitarists (including Becker) and a four piece brass ensemble. This time, a 12 piece.. more or less the same but just one guitarist. It was bittersweet in that regard, I guess some cannot simply be replaced. (Did you feel like Jesus?) Did you realize That you were a champion in their eyes? Ending on a good note, they still have it.. and the tickets I scored (at non-scalper prices no less) were front row, stage left. There was a gap in the apparatus and we happened to be right where Fagan glanced when he was in thought and moving his head out of the light. Careful what you carry Cause the man is wise You are still an outlaw in their eyes I wouldn't say they were as good as the last time I saw them.. almost.. but it gets the five star approval rating. The sound in this tiny theatre was excellent and the boys were jamming with spirit. RIP Walter Becker. Ok.. back to your regularly scheduled banter, bickering, praise, disgust and generally spirited discussions.. Get Along... Get Along Kid Charlemagne. Or in the spirit of discourse that rears it's head from time to time. Get Off My Grass Kid Charlemagne.

a nice response to our fellow heads' troubles:"Sorry to hear about all the problems with discs and box damage. I’ve never had a problem in my 7+ years of pavlovian dead.net purchasing." A response that ain't nice: "Quit bitching about your goddamn product malfunctions. Nobody cares, especially me - this forum is for pure entertainment...STFU. Talk about Motorhead, or something cool. We all deal with adversity. I run a company. Some of you are, simply - ridiculous whiners." Sorry about your bad day LedDed. Maybe you should sell that company before you get any worse. Try to take out your frustrations elsewhere so they don't feed the bad weather that chronically blows through here... My sympathies to all who have problems in their Dead-life. But more sympathy to those frustrated with their GDM experiences than to those frustrated with hearing about others troubles.

I sent my request through the link in the confirmation email yesterday in regards to multiple cd issues with this release. Received response today that replacements are on the way.The cds are really thin cheap, need better quality control.... That said I don't buy all these releases mostly due I think they're total overkill, just give us the music. These shows should've been released individually cd/download. They typically listen to us I'm for less to no giant boxes but more individual non subscription, no limited edition, no dave's logo taking up space (not hating on dave), no horrible skeleton 'art', plain bootleg type releases. everyone gets so blinded by a little card with a number on it that they think gives these releases some additional worth. give us more releases from different years , maybe 5-7 a year with no promises no bonus disc you want it you buy it...I just think the subscription limited big box thing just needs to be mixed up a bit. and cool on judas priest and motorhead and this 73-74....dig

Man, thanks for the reminder/tribute!. Entwistle was the finest bassist I ever saw live. I would put him against the great Jack Bruce, but, alas, I never saw Jack. I did see John Paul Jones. Another hero. Gene Simmons' bass lines are vastly underrated. He got a lot from McCartney, who stole James Jamerson. It just keeps on going. Sting and Adam Clayton are also awesome, as is Roger Glover. Quit bitching about your goddamn product malfunctions. Nobody cares, especially me - this forum is for pure entertainment. Address your concerns to the appropriate parties, the Dr, Marye, etc. The rest of the field remain powerless to help you as we are not staffing the Rhino warehouse. I have never had a shit experience purchasing product here. Sorry. If I did, I can't imagine it would enrich the forum or anyone's day to detail it here... "I talked to customer service in Indonesia and was hung up on and no one understands what a big baby I am, blah blah blah. My first world problems should call out the National Guard!" You are dreaming if you think the suits, or Dave, mine this treasure chest regularly to decide what to release, where to source out product, etc. STFU. Talk about Motorhead, or something cool. We all deal with adversity. I run a company. Some of you are, simply - ridiculous whiners.

Replacement disc saga (and possible future release?!?)
HI All- I wrote a while back about my experience in getting discs replaced. I am not going to repeat all of it other than summarizing what I think worked which was I kept up on them. It wasn't real easyas I had to email, wait for response, email again for update etc.. It took a few weeks but it worked out. It seems like some got their replacements faster, and some took longer than me and even some had no luck. It also sounds like there are various routes to take to get replacements. No doubt it's frustrating and stressful to have contend with this, at least it was for me. However I was damn well determined to persevere because I knew then rend result would be great music. Definitely quality control and customer service needs a little overhaul. I have to say that this was my first major issue like this and I somewhat disturbed...mainy for some future purchases. Now I am not really worried about Dave’s Picks but future boxes might be something I possibly hold off on to assess the quality level. I can see boxes that contain multiple shows (essentially many discs) might be prone to more quality issues. Basically there is just items to get screwed up. Then again if the box is from shows I really want, I don't think I will wait long to pull the trigger and buy it- who am I trying to fool? Now here is an interesting tidbit: When I went through this whole quest to get replacement discs it was basically a series of emails for communication/reporting/updating. Yet at one point in the process I did call customer services at Dead.net I knew this would likely be useless but might as well try right? After a short and yet nice conversation with the customer service rep, his basic advice was to email. At the very end he asked me few questions, like how long have liked the Dead, and then he asks what was my favorite show? Well I was calling from work so not only was a taken back by this question, I knew it wasn't an easy answer for me. but I quickly realized I was about to give this customer service rep my personal thesis. Rather than get potentially get written up or fired for a 30 minute stream of consciousness answer, I just blurted out 10/18/72. Now is a show I like that, the I listen too frequently and that is not released. I would certainly be a good one to have in my possession. So I don’t know could it be that this is some type of informal survey being conducted? Maybe the defective discs and non-linear process to get discs replaced are all in an effort to get frustrated customers to call in so that we can give direct input to future releases? I know this sounds like a twisted Willy Wonka golden ticket ploy. Or it could be aliens. In all reality this customer service rep was trying to be kind, but it is fun to ponder the “what if”. Seriously though, I do hope everyone gets their replacement discs because this release is just so good. Anyone who is thinking about giving up don’t. OH and I might as well make Dave’s Picks 28 prediction: yeah 10/18/72. Might as well try right?

A better choice would have been the great Fred Neil. Robert Johnson, but no Charley Patton. No Moby Grape, but Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone and ABBA are there; all fine artists, but not R'n'R artists. Finally made it through all of my discs and although many of them have large scratch and scuffs only one skipped and after a clean seems ok. I agree the quality control is lacking. I honestly feel my scratched discs should be replaced, I just don't want to go through the process. My GSTL box had several skipping discs as well, but all were replaced. If you buy a new anything, and there is a scratch on it, will one not return said item for an unblemished one? Personally I've been in manufacturing for over 25 years and my customers would pull contracts for reoccurring issues like this. Damage in shipping is a seperate issue. All my discs where secured in their holders so any scratch scuffs happened at point of manufacture/ packaging. But even with that said, we all choose to continually purchase these items knowing about past production issues. I hope everyone gets replacements asap. It just seems like any purchases from here should be treated with a "Caveat emptor" attitude.

I can't believe someone objected to Hippychic's posts. It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Kramer freaks out when Jerry threatens to report his female neighbor for walking around her apartment naked. Madness. I love this space, where every topic under the sun is fair game, but lets face it, it is mostly a sterile, barren, sexless sausage fest. especially since Kate C. no longer posts. Please keep the posts cummin Hippychic.

Getting off the subject of the Grateful Dead, a blast from my past: Lothar And The Hand People. I never really got to see them many years ago at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton, Pennsylvania, but I definitely do remember the name. I used to have their 1st Capitol Records LP, I guess -the one with pictures of the band members photos on the front cover on a tan background. I thought the their facial expressions in these photos were hilarious, and ages ago I bought the album with that being one of the reasons for buying it. Another reason to buy it was to "explore" new music and it was quite low-cost price for the time. ($2.98 or something like that) Anyway, with that being said, here's a sound sample - I think it's the whole album, or at least the opening track on Side 1, "Machines": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDpIz8E6wvs&list=PLW1w8neoXejs188MBadMB…

My first comment here, after lurking for a few months, ha! I personally would love to see 6-4-76 Paramount Theater, Portland, OR. Great setlist, historic show, and does not circulate in SBD. That said, a mini box of both 6-3 and 6-4 might be warranted, so perhaps they'll hold off (provided 6-4 is even in the vault). Just sayin'. Hey everybody!

No not the guitar company or the mental thing... the Miles Davis album. Miles Davis, E.S.P. Man, is this beautiful music. The last two songs, "Iris, and Mood" are just hypnotic. I was at the Dead & Co. shows in Boulder the last two nights. I was with some buddies Friday and had a great time though I felt the pace dragged a little. So, taking the wife last night, I kept hyping it - that Friday maybe wasn't the most stellar show and being end of tour, last night would kill it. It lagged even more than Friday. When Bob took the band into a languid, "Days Between" right out of a long-ass drums/space, I think half the stadium fell asleep. Still love the band, but, that was exactly the moment to go into "Me And My Uncle, or Truckin'," something to put a little juice in the proceedings. As usual the sound was immaculate; pristine. That band has the cleanest, purest live sound mix I have ever heard and they get it outside. Amazing. Shakedown street there at Folsom Field is a beautiful scene. You can get great food, cool swag and there are several full bars. The cops just hang out behind their sunglasses with their arms folded and watch the girls. A great weekend. Happy Sunday everyone.

I thought the Boulder shows looked pretty good on paper. But, I wasn’t there and I didn’t do the stream. I did catch the free stream of Set 1 opening China/Rider and thought it was great. Agree with LedDed that D&C has spectacular concert sound. So does Roger Waters. Worst concert sound I experienced: Van Halen 2007. Horrendous. It was indoors, but I have also seen Roger Waters 3x and D&C 2x at the same place and they sounded great. For RW in 2012 I was one row in front of the same seat I was in for VH 2007, and it sounded great, so can’t blame the arena for the bad VH sound. Saw VH outdoors in 2015 and it sounded way better, but not even close to how D&C sounds outdoors.

Hey now I just came a cross this on ebay, it's probably already been discussed. Are any of these extra tracks on the bonus third CD of Long Strange Trip previously unreleased? EXCLUSIVE Bonus Disc Three TRACK LISTING: 1 Playing in the Band (Beat-Club, Bremen, West Germany, 4/21/1972) 9:48 2 Eyes of the World (Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ, 8/6/1974) 18:35 3 St. Stephen (Cornell 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 5/8/1977) 4:47 4 Not Fade Away (Cornell 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 5/8/1977) 16:20 5 St. Stephen (Cornell 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 5/8/1977) 2:04 6 Dark Hollow (Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA, 10/7/1980) 4:04 7 Stella Blue (Zoo Amphitheater, Oklahoma City, OK, 7/5/1981) 10:14 8 Days Between (Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 10/18/1994) 13:56 the only ones I question are the Zoo from 81 and Days Between? Didn't the Eyes come out on a Dicks picks? Help I'm not a schooled archivist. :> Thanks, nitecat

Agreed-a superb album-Herbie Hancocks piano and Tony Williams drumming-exceptional. All those mid 60s Miles Davis album are great-but E.S.P might just be my favourite.I only got into Bitches Brew this year. There is a 3 cd 1 dvd anniversary edition of this out, that doesn't cost so much, and sounds brilliant. Much, much better than earlier editions-to my way of thinking.

Vguy - Love ya, but I disagree that the '81 TTATS was met with "fire and brimstone". No one dissed the show itself (as I recall). The general consensus was that it was one of the weaker recordings in the box - merely a statement of fact. '81 is one of the worst-recorded of the Dead's 30 years, so it was to be expected, no? "Fire and brimstone" seems a bit dramatic, but perhaps I'm forgetting some of the comments.

Nice - Glad they found a good show and good recording form the 80's. Help Slip Franklin's is one of my favorites, and is one of the songs that no one has enough of. Glad to hear Eyes is NOT one of the super-speedy versions that was the norm in the 80's. BRING IT!
