The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

I had similar issues with skips on the last Trax of several CDs from all different bands. What I found was the only last tracks that were skipping were the ones where the full 80 minutes of Music had been utilized on the CD. The problem didn't happen on a CD with 45 or 50 minutes. I found that if I slowed the CD rip speed down to 1x, the problem would usually go away. Then out of curiosity, I tried ripping at normal speeds on my work laptop, which was much newer then my home desktop Tower which I had had for many years. In my mind it was a combination of the age of the CD burner and the fully packed 80-minute CDs. Also still waiting. How's the sound everybody? I'd really be interested in kayak guys assessment in particular, because he was very excited about plangent.

Numbers sold

If the old put it in the cart and see what is left works it looks like they've sold around 5000 copies this week. If true very wierd. Not sure why so many would wait. Not too important it will sell out maybe by the end of the year. Good news for all who want the shows to keep coming. One thing I know little about is downloads. I hope they get that fixed on a 1st run basis eventually for those that want it. As for the OCD while the short leg is certainly functional. Would you be satisfied with a new car someone at the dealer backed into but was still useable? I seriously doubt it

I am not sure how or if they plan to address this. I did notice in prior offerings, the digital files were the same price as the physical product. This time they are cheaper. It's quite possible the digital downloads are just the music this time around. Good luck and happy listening to all.

Let the music play...

I got the same 30 Trips, and they were all clean and burned in easily the first time. Sometimes I use compressed air to blow fuzz and dust out of the disc burner, that doesn't hurt. I also have to say I love the 30 Trips. I'd heard a bunch before but didn't have it all in my possession. The patches don't bother me. As far as furniture with a short leg, well, that's a functional disability. That's like a guitar with a broken neck - unplayable. As far as the scratches, those are just cosmetic, and each of us can decide how uptight we want to be about such things.

Boxilla Question

Sorry, off topic...no box here YET! Thanks to the heads up from good folks here, was able to finally get the 30 Trips music edition recently. Had a hell of a time ripping many of the discs. Many read and sync errors. Especially problematic were many disc 2 last track (drums) or last couple of tracks. I believe the 94 Terrapin took forever. In fact, if I wasn’t using Exact Audio Copy on my custom server, I don’t think I would of been successful! Everything so far seems to play fine.... So, did anyone else have any of these problems? I know some have speculated that perhaps some of these rereleased sets were RMA or B stock etc? Just wondering if anyone else had, or has recently experienced any of this phenomena? FYI, don’t think it’s my machine as other things have been fine.....

PDF Booklet for Digital Download Purchasers

Hey now! I bought the FLAC version of this box set and am loving it! However, I assumed a pdf of the booklet included in the physical box set would be included in the digital version. That has been the case with other digital versions I have purchased. Is there a download link for the book that I missed? Thanks! -Carter

"Good News" emails

I received my "Good news, Jeff! Your order is on the way." email last night at 9:03 PM. When I searched on UPS just now, the tracking number is not recognized by UPS Tracking ("regular" or My Choice). I suspect what this means is that the shipping folks at dead/wmg/Rhino have generated a shipping label with my tracking number and placed it on my package. Until the UPS system updates with Dead/WMG/Rhino's shipping label info (Monday?), my tracking number will continue to be unrecognized when searched for on UPS. Maybe this won't happen until UPA actually takes physical possession of my package and scans its tracking number into their system (again, on Monday?). My guess is that the packages prepared this weekend will be reflected on UPS tracking when UPS resumes normal business Monday morning and/or picks up the package. Then tracking info and updates should become available(?) Wish I'd ponied up for "Delivery by Drone". . . Whatever – looks like it's going to have been well worth the wait once my PNW '73-'74 catches up with me. Onward.

Lothar And The Hand People

Getting off the subject of the Grateful Dead, a blast from my past: Lothar And The Hand People. I never really got to see them many years ago at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton, Pennsylvania, but I definitely do remember the name. I used to have their 1st Capitol Records LP, I guess -the one with pictures of the band members photos on the front cover on a tan background. I thought the their facial expressions in these photos were hilarious, and ages ago I bought the album with that being one of the reasons for buying it. Another reason to buy it was to "explore" new music and it was quite low-cost price for the time. My first comment here, after lurking for a few months, ha! I personally would love to see 6-4-76 Paramount Theater, Portland, OR. Great setlist, historic show, and does not circulate in SBD. That said, a mini box of both 6-3 and 6-4 might be warranted, so perhaps they'll hold off (provided 6-4 is even in the vault). Just sayin'. Hey everybody!

No not the guitar company or the mental thing... the Miles Davis album. Miles Davis, E.S.P. Man, is this beautiful music. The last two songs, "Iris, and Mood" are just hypnotic. I was at the Dead & Co. shows in Boulder the last two nights. I was with some buddies Friday and had a great time though I felt the pace dragged a little. So, taking the wife last night, I kept hyping it - that Friday maybe wasn't the most stellar show and being end of tour, last night would kill it. It lagged even more than Friday. When Bob took the band into a languid, "Days Between" right out of a long-ass drums/space, I think half the stadium fell asleep. Still love the band, but, that was exactly the moment to go into "Me And My Uncle, or Truckin'," something to put a little juice in the proceedings. As usual the sound was immaculate; pristine. That band has the cleanest, purest live sound mix I have ever heard and they get it outside. Amazing. Shakedown street there at Folsom Field is a beautiful scene. You can get great food, cool swag and there are several full bars. The cops just hang out behind their sunglasses with their arms folded and watch the girls. A great weekend. Happy Sunday everyone.

Never judge a setlist by the show

I thought the Boulder shows looked pretty good on paper. But, I wasn’t there and I didn’t do the stream. I did catch the free stream of Set 1 opening China/Rider and thought it was great. Agree with LedDed that D&C has spectacular concert sound. So does Roger Waters. Worst concert sound I experienced: Van Halen 2007. Horrendous. It was indoors, but I have also seen Roger Waters 3x and D&C 2x at the same place and they sounded great. For RW in 2012 I was one row in front of the same seat I was in for VH 2007, and it sounded great, so can’t blame the arena for the bad VH sound. Saw VH outdoors in 2015 and it sounded way better, but not even close to how D&C sounds outdoors.

You are right. Only the last two songs of the bonus disc were previously unreleased. Been hoping for a full 7/5/81 release for a while now. Great ‘81 show but also a hometown one for me. Enjoy the CD!

E.S.P-Led Ded

Agreed-a superb album-Herbie Hancocks piano and Tony Williams drumming-exceptional. All those mid 60s Miles Davis album are great-but E.S.P might just be my favourite.I only got into Bitches Brew this year. There is a 3 cd 1 dvd anniversary edition of this out, that doesn't cost so much, and sounds brilliant. Much, much better than earlier editions-to my way of thinking.

'81 TTATS - fire and brimstone??

Vguy - Love ya, but I disagree that the '81 TTATS was met with "fire and brimstone". No one dissed the show itself (as I recall). The general consensus was that it was one of the weaker recordings in the box - merely a statement of fact. '81 is one of the worst-recorded of the Dead's 30 years, so it was to be expected, no? "Fire and brimstone" seems a bit dramatic, but perhaps I'm forgetting some of the comments.

Figured I would spend my Monday morning looking for news on 27th Dave. While waiting I streamed that Dicky Elizabeth Reed video. Wow, that hit the spot. I always thought volume swells could only be done on a Strat. What a glorious intro by Dicky. Thanks for posting

Nice - Glad they found a good show and good recording form the 80's. Help Slip Franklin's is one of my favorites, and is one of the songs that no one has enough of. Glad to hear Eyes is NOT one of the super-speedy versions that was the norm in the 80's. BRING IT!
