    The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

    For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

    It all seems to be gathering momentum in Sweden, which is good to read. Over here,in England, after the initial email a few days ago its all gone quite again. I thought it would pitch up sometime in October, but from what you say-maybe it will be sooner.

    i think the box is actually the same plywood as the certificate of authenticity box. if you knock on the small box it makes the same sound as the big box, cardboard doesn't make that sound. there is no plastic bag inside the shipping box, so if it gets wet during delivery it won't be good. they should have bagged the contents like they did with the E72 box. they do offer a space saving non deluxe version, which is the downloads. they also offer a 3 CD version and starting to roll out the vinyl versions, where the real profit is made. we should be happy they still offer premium CD sets, soon it will be vinyl boxes and memory sticks only as alternatives to downloads with maybe a pdf of the book that comes with the records. these GD boxes have become a yearly nominee for the grammy for box set packaging, they won't get any less intricate as long as Rhino's trying for the award. the whole idea that originally Rhino wanted a drum for the package and the artist went with a treasure chest instead is probably a good thing as a drum sounds like a dumb package concept. Thanks again Roy for not going with the drum idea.

    Friends, Check all of your CDs. Even a quick glance, you should be able to know, if a problem is potential. Both my dics 14 and 15 are damaged. Nice size scratch on the 14th. The 15th had a splotch on it. Cd will not read. Package is undamaged.

    I haven’t posted in a long time, but now I simply must. I was already familiar with the PNE, 6-22-1973 show, so I started with the Portland OR, 6-24-1973 show. Man oh man! I was really excited to hear the show that followed the famed PNE ‘73 show. Of course, in real time, I’m sure the band didn’t realize how significant a show people would consider PNE ‘73. But the GOGD rolls into Portland and does it again. This show is so good! First, the sound is excellent. Great separation of all the instruments and voices. I love the single drummer line up and this mix really presents it well. The show has a nice and easy vibe. The band’s playing seems effortless and the ballads are beautiful. Jerry, in particular, is in good voice. A special shout out to Phil Lesh. He sings “Box of Rain” as well as can be expected in a live performance. Amazingly, of all the voices on “Box of Rain”, Phil stays in key more than everyone else. Even as others try to tempt him away from the melody with their “not quite in tune” harmonies. Bravo Phil! Ha ha ha. The set list, as many have commented, is so good. This show is perfect for winding down an evening, but engaging enough to keep you pleasantly captivated. The box itself is awesome! I agree, it’s second only to “Europe ‘72 - The Complete Recordings”. Materials aside, the design and layout is pretty cool. It presents the shows as though they are special and to be savored. On a personal note, the color scheme and design of the book took me back to my childhood in the 1970s. So when I opened the box, it immediately gave me a great emotional hit. I was ready to imbibe! Next show on the road trip, Seattle WA, 6-26-1973. And the band played on . . . Peace friends!

    Sublime music, But the packaging, just too much!
    Can’t say enough about how much I like this selection. My favorite era. The sound is just pristine. As for this packaging... c’mon Dave! If you want me to keep buying these things every year, then you have to be reasonable about the packaging. it’s not fair to people (like me) who live in apartments and have limited space. Can I suggest two packaging options next time - one with the beautiful packaging (and it is beautiful, really) and one with just the CDs? This will conclude my rant.

Only reason I bought it was for the 1967-10-22 show. I've already got a really good soundboard of it but I'm listening with nice headphones right now & it's definetly worth it. Sounds fantastic.Get some... a little further in now...massive upgrade. Thanks :o)

I can't believe someone objected to Hippychic's posts. Getting off the subject of the Grateful Dead, a blast from my past: Lothar And The Hand People. I never really got to see them many years ago at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton, Pennsylvania, but I definitely do remember the name. I used to have their 1st Capitol Records LP, I guess -the one with pictures of the band members photos on the front cover on a tan background. I thought the their facial expressions in these photos were hilarious, and ages ago I bought the album with that being one of the reasons for buying it. Another reason to buy it was to "explore" new music and it was quite low-cost price for the time. My first comment here, after lurking for a few months, ha! I personally would love to see 6-4-76 Paramount Theater, Portland, OR. Great setlist, historic show, and does not circulate in SBD. That said, a mini box of both 6-3 and 6-4 might be warranted, so perhaps they'll hold off (provided 6-4 is even in the vault). Just sayin'. Hey everybody!

No not the guitar company or the mental thing... the Miles Davis album. Miles Davis, E.S.P. Man, is this beautiful music. The last two songs, "Iris, and Mood" are just hypnotic. I was at the Dead & Co. shows in Boulder the last two nights. I was with some buddies Friday and had a great time though I felt the pace dragged a little. So, taking the wife last night, I kept hyping it - that Friday maybe wasn't the most stellar show and being end of tour, last night would kill it. It lagged even more than Friday. When Bob took the band into a languid, "Days Between" right out of a long-ass drums/space, I think half the stadium fell asleep. Still love the band, but, that was exactly the moment to go into "Me And My Uncle, or Truckin'," something to put a little juice in the proceedings. As usual the sound was immaculate; pristine. That band has the cleanest, purest live sound mix I have ever heard and they get it outside. Amazing. Shakedown street there at Folsom Field is a beautiful scene. You can get great food, cool swag and there are several full bars. The cops just hang out behind their sunglasses with their arms folded and watch the girls. A great weekend. Happy Sunday everyone.

I thought the Boulder shows looked pretty good on paper. But, I wasn’t there and I didn’t do the stream. I did catch the free stream of Set 1 opening China/Rider and thought it was great. Agree with LedDed that D&C has spectacular concert sound. So does Roger Waters. Worst concert sound I experienced: Van Halen 2007. Horrendous. It was indoors, but I have also seen Roger Waters 3x and D&C 2x at the same place and they sounded great. For RW in 2012 I was one row in front of the same seat I was in for VH 2007, and it sounded great, so can’t blame the arena for the bad VH sound. Saw VH outdoors in 2015 and it sounded way better, but not even close to how D&C sounds outdoors.

You are right. Only the last two songs of the bonus disc were previously unreleased. Been hoping for a full 7/5/81 release for a while now. Great ‘81 show but also a hometown one for me. Enjoy the CD!

Agreed-a superb album-Herbie Hancocks piano and Tony Williams drumming-exceptional. All those mid 60s Miles Davis album are great-but E.S.P might just be my favourite.I only got into Bitches Brew this year. There is a 3 cd 1 dvd anniversary edition of this out, that doesn't cost so much, and sounds brilliant. Much, much better than earlier editions-to my way of thinking.

Vguy - Love ya, but I disagree that the '81 TTATS was met with "fire and brimstone". No one dissed the show itself (as I recall). The general consensus was that it was one of the weaker recordings in the box - merely a statement of fact. '81 is one of the worst-recorded of the Dead's 30 years, so it was to be expected, no? "Fire and brimstone" seems a bit dramatic, but perhaps I'm forgetting some of the comments.

Thin-I was thinking nitecat was referring only to the last two tracks on the bonus disc from the Amazon-exclusive version. You are correct, there are several unreleased tracks throughout the 3-disc version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Strange_Trip Happy DaP 27 announcement day, everybody!

Nice - Glad they found a good show and good recording form the 80's. Help Slip Franklin's is one of my favorites, and is one of the songs that no one has enough of. Glad to hear Eyes is NOT one of the super-speedy versions that was the norm in the 80's. BRING IT!
