"We were in the Pacific Northwest...between somewhere in Washington and some other where in Oregon. The road took us to the lip on a ridge, from where we could see around us for many miles in all directions … It was breathtaking to behold, but as we watched, we had a firm realization that we were witnessing something even more beautiful than our eyes could ever take in … Life causes life. Heaven and Earth dance in this way endlessly, and their child is the forest. And so there we were, epiphanously watching that grandest and most glorious dance of life—of which we are just a tiny part—awed by a magnificence without beginning, without end..."

Bob Weir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now too.

    Get it while you can.

With the help of Marye and Dr. Rhino, I was able to get a replacement disc for my one defective disc within 7-10 days. First I sent an email to:Drrhino@wmgcustomerservice.com AND Drrhino@rhino.com Dr. Rhino emailed me back within 36 hours stating that a replacement disc would be sent ASAP. Then, I asked marye for her help in clarifying what exactly ASAP meant. Marye was able to ask the Doctor more specifically, when I could expect my disc, and thus, marye did let me know that my replacement disc was in fact mailed out. I got the disc a day or two later.

My dog doesn’t take issues with Donna screams. But, he does raise his head, perk his ears, and slowly tilt his head back and forth while he looks at the speakers during Drums/Space. As for the MIT study Kayak Guy referenced, my dog also poops, and drinks beer, and listens to GD, but that doesn’t make him human. Not MIT, but if you are in the Princeton area, looks like you can buy some high priced releases at this record store. Video posted in January, maybe sold by now. https://youtu.be/C3r37kOUDHo

Hey Now, to all of you waiting on replacements. I was able to get replacement discs sent to me, it was not quick but not too hard to accomplish. I will tell you what I did so hopefully it may help: So my box arrived on 9/10 and I got to opening the next day on 9/11. I ended up needing 5 discs replaced. I emailed Dead.net customer service on that same day. I got a late night email response that stated something to the effect that my request would be answered within 48 hours. 48 hours passed and since it was about 72 hours in I emailed customer service again - this was on 9/14. I got a response which directed me to fill out form which was provided through a link in the email. I went to the link which was page attached to Warner Music Group - helpspot it has title WMG Customer Service. I completed the form and hit the submit button, this was on 9/15. Once that happened the page provided my with an access key number that it sated could be utilized to to get updates. The page also suggested that I should bookmark it for updates. Now this is where it gets weird. This access key number did not seem be something I could enter anywhere for updates, not on Rhino, not on Warner, not on Dead.net... The page I bookmarked only seemed useful for me to provide additional updates to my request, so to add photos of damage for example. So on 9/20, I responded to my Dead.net customer service email I received on 9/14 for an update. I provided both my order number, that access key and I explained the situation. I got response on that same day from a customer service rep name Mac, who apologized said that it would be taken care of. ON 9/26 Mac from Dead.net sent me a follow up email stating the my replacement discs were in the mail. I got them on 9/28. So first off all I want to publicly thank Mac in Dead.net customer service! Second for anyone looking to get replacement disc I am going suggest that you may have to just keep up on them like I did. I know my write up was lengthy but I wanted to illustrate what it took for me to get them. I don't think one request will work unfortunately but the good part is that I think you can get them if you keep up on customer service. When all else fails to you can always go to Jedi Master MaryE. I don't want to speak for her, but I know she helped many in the past with this kind of thing.

ok, who do you have to notify about defective discs? Anyone got an email address? Anyone? Rhino, you got some explainin' to do. Via Con Dios Marty my friend, now you are truly betwixt two worlds. I was an avid Airplane fan long before I became a deadhead, they were the quintessential San Francisco group when I was first discovering rock and roll. I never got to see the Airplane, but I did get to see the Starship during the Dragonfly>Red Octopus time frame. Never forget Marty and Gracie's duets, they always tried to out sing each other, some times Marty was better, some times Gracie, but it was just so great to see these icons perform. We will never see or hear such music again. I predict that this box set will not sell out, maybe in a year or two, but not right away, just too many flaws, maybe that's why they wrapped it up in such a beautiful box, cause the music is good, but the recording is so-so. Most of the songs are too slow, the China Doll's are almost as slow as a funeral progression, I see why they dropped that tune from the setlists. My request for the next box, no more 70's shows unless they have some that sound great and are recorded great, which I think they are running out of, so, on to the 80's or early 90's, some Bruce and Vince would be wonderful. Matrix if you have to, just do it.

If anyone does not have them yet https://themidnightcafe.org/2018/06/03/the-grateful-dead-the-entire-war… And while we're flying on the Airplane, this is a cool little box set I picked up awhile ago. Its a USB stick, with a booklet. (not CDs despite what the link says). https://www.wolfgangs.com/cds-and-dvds/jefferson-airplane/box-set/ZZZ01… And if you're flying econonmy class, here are a bunch of Airplane shows for streaming. I guess people forget ,what it was like to make tapes from tapes , that were tapes of tapes , Sometimes we forget how fortunate we have it , all you have to do is wait , and killer soundboards are hand picked and delivered to your house . Furthermore you have the team of artists talented beyond my EARS ,everyone doing their absolute best to deliver , the Dead’s music better than It came to them. The PNW package is so good you don’t want to open it ! When you reveal the treasure inside , again better than I hoped , every perfect note accentuated with the real flaws made as perfect as if you where standing in front of the band. They are giving us the the best of The Grateful Dead on a Silver platter. If you love the Dead as much as I This collection from the quintessential North West tours in 1973+1974 , every note with perfect ,imperfection that’s what you have to accept about this band , you have listen , and be patient, and listen , And then you will here the magic that is the Grateful Dead. Don’t be foolish if you like this era don’t miss out ,for I don’t understand why it’s not sold out , it’s worth the investment ,for the Dark Star alone . Only reason I bought it was for the 1967-10-22 show. I've already got a really good soundboard of it but I'm listening with nice headphones right now & it's definetly worth it. Sounds fantastic.Get some... a little further in now...massive upgrade. Thanks :o)

I can't believe someone objected to Hippychic's posts. It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Kramer freaks out when Jerry threatens to report his female neighbor for walking around her apartment naked. Madness. I love this space, where every topic under the sun is fair game, but lets face it, it is mostly a sterile, barren, sexless sausage fest. especially since Kate C. no longer posts. Please keep the posts cummin Hippychic.

Getting off the subject of the Grateful Dead, a blast from my past: Lothar And The Hand People. I never really got to see them many years ago at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton, Pennsylvania, but I definitely do remember the name. I used to have their 1st Capitol Records LP, I guess -the one with pictures of the band members photos on the front cover on a tan background. I thought the their facial expressions in these photos were hilarious, and ages ago I bought the album with that being one of the reasons for buying it. Another reason to buy it was to "explore" new music and it was quite low-cost price for the time. ($2.98 or something like that) Anyway, with that being said, here's a sound sample - I think it's the whole album, or at least the opening track on Side 1, "Machines": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDpIz8E6wvs&list=PLW1w8neoXejs188MBadMB…

My first comment here, after lurking for a few months, ha! I personally would love to see 6-4-76 Paramount Theater, Portland, OR. Great setlist, historic show, and does not circulate in SBD. That said, a mini box of both 6-3 and 6-4 might be warranted, so perhaps they'll hold off (provided 6-4 is even in the vault). Just sayin'. Hey everybody!

I'll probably be busy and miss the announcement going live, but will be checking for a Listening Party at lunch after Taper's Section in the morning. No not the guitar company or the mental thing... the Miles Davis album. Miles Davis, E.S.P. Man, is this beautiful music. The last two songs, "Iris, and Mood" are just hypnotic. I was at the Dead & Co. shows in Boulder the last two nights. I was with some buddies Friday and had a great time though I felt the pace dragged a little. So, taking the wife last night, I kept hyping it - that Friday maybe wasn't the most stellar show and being end of tour, last night would kill it. It lagged even more than Friday. When Bob took the band into a languid, "Days Between" right out of a long-ass drums/space, I think half the stadium fell asleep. Still love the band, but, that was exactly the moment to go into "Me And My Uncle, or Truckin'," something to put a little juice in the proceedings. As usual the sound was immaculate; pristine. That band has the cleanest, purest live sound mix I have ever heard and they get it outside. Amazing. Shakedown street there at Folsom Field is a beautiful scene. You can get great food, cool swag and there are several full bars. The cops just hang out behind their sunglasses with their arms folded and watch the girls. A great weekend. Happy Sunday everyone.

I thought the Boulder shows looked pretty good on paper. But, I wasn’t there and I didn’t do the stream. I did catch the free stream of Set 1 opening China/Rider and thought it was great. Agree with LedDed that D&C has spectacular concert sound. So does Roger Waters. Worst concert sound I experienced: Van Halen 2007. Horrendous. It was indoors, but I have also seen Roger Waters 3x and D&C 2x at the same place and they sounded great. For RW in 2012 I was one row in front of the same seat I was in for VH 2007, and it sounded great, so can’t blame the arena for the bad VH sound. Saw VH outdoors in 2015 and it sounded way better, but not even close to how D&C sounds outdoors.

Hey now I just came a cross this on ebay, it's probably already been discussed. Are any of these extra tracks on the bonus third CD of Long Strange Trip previously unreleased? EXCLUSIVE Bonus Disc Three TRACK LISTING: 1 Playing in the Band (Beat-Club, Bremen, West Germany, 4/21/1972) 9:48 2 Eyes of the World (Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ, 8/6/1974) 18:35 3 St. Stephen (Cornell 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 5/8/1977) 4:47 4 Not Fade Away (Cornell 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 5/8/1977) 16:20 5 St. Stephen (Cornell 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 5/8/1977) 2:04 6 Dark Hollow (Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA, 10/7/1980) 4:04 7 Stella Blue (Zoo Amphitheater, Oklahoma City, OK, 7/5/1981) 10:14 8 Days Between (Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 10/18/1994) 13:56 the only ones I question are the Zoo from 81 and Days Between? Didn't the Eyes come out on a Dicks picks? Help I'm not a schooled archivist. :> Thanks, nitecat

Agreed-a superb album-Herbie Hancocks piano and Tony Williams drumming-exceptional. All those mid 60s Miles Davis album are great-but E.S.P might just be my favourite.I only got into Bitches Brew this year. There is a 3 cd 1 dvd anniversary edition of this out, that doesn't cost so much, and sounds brilliant. Much, much better than earlier editions-to my way of thinking.

Vguy - Love ya, but I disagree that the '81 TTATS was met with "fire and brimstone". No one dissed the show itself (as I recall). The general consensus was that it was one of the weaker recordings in the box - merely a statement of fact. '81 is one of the worst-recorded of the Dead's 30 years, so it was to be expected, no? "Fire and brimstone" seems a bit dramatic, but perhaps I'm forgetting some of the comments.

Nice - Glad they found a good show and good recording form the 80's. Help Slip Franklin's is one of my favorites, and is one of the songs that no one has enough of. Glad to hear Eyes is NOT one of the super-speedy versions that was the norm in the 80's. BRING IT!
