    August 20 - August 26, 2007

As we move toward the symbolic end of summer (Labour Day, of course), we have some great music to play spanning about 21 years of Grateful Dead music, from 1968 to 1989, two fine years with which to bookend this week’s offerings.

Our first entry this week is the encore from 8/21/68 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, a nice, juicy Midnight Hour. Although not quite as prevalent at shows in 1968 as it had been in 1966, the Grateful Dead continued to play monster versions of this Pigpen vehicle.

Next we’ll stop into 1972, to the opening night of the rightfully famous Europe 72 tour, to 4/7/72 in London. From the middle of that night’s first set is a typically hot 1972 rendition of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.

In 1976, at the end of their very successful summer of comeback shows, the Grateful Dead entered the studio and recorded a couple of the songs they’d been playing that summer. From one of those sessions on 8/29/76 is this bare-bones Dancing In The Street with only Donna on vocals. While we’re in mid-1970s mode, we also have this terrific Samson and Delilah from 5/12/77 in Chicago. Despite the frequency that song was played in 1976-1977, they never seem to get tired of it, always offering up an inspired rendition.

Finally from the 1970s, on 4/22/78 in Nashville to be precise, we are pleased to bring you a couple of tracks from the second set, starting with the second set opening Lazy Lightning>Supplication and the pre-Drums Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World, both very nicely performed songs on this night.

Our last stop this week is in New Jersey on 7/10/89, a show that took place in and out of a massive thunderstorm. By request, we have the first set closer, The Music Never Stopped, and from the start of the second set, a great 1989 combination of Foolish Heart, Just a Little Light, Playing In The Band>Uncle John’s Band. What a great tour.

Be sure to check in next week, as we’ll be exploring some intriguing material from 1969 and 1980, and other material between those years, and likely after. We try to surprise even ourselves. Feel free to write with questions or comments.

Please note that beginning today all Taper’s Section audio streams are served via a new media player in both Windows Media Audio and QuickTime Audio formats.

    seroiusly folks
maybe they pulled the mp3's because people were trading amongst people. Its a well known no-no in the trading community not to trade mp3's. Maybe the people at GD didn't want inferiour recordings flooding the trading community? i've never in my life seen so much bitching/whining/moaning/complaining. Anyone who knows anything knows there are other places to get GD music. This isn't the place to be begging for handouts. Be thankful for what they do give us. you are aiming your insults/bitching/moaning at the wrong people. D. Lemeuix and david gans are here to help folks. Mayeb write rhino and let them know what they are doing is wrong. But to keeping on whining to D. lemeuix and D. gans won't change anything. they have rules they are instructed to follow. If your only source of tunes is from dead.net i feel sorry for you. That is pathetic considering the pletherora of other dead trading sites/bnp vines ect ect....until rhino stops all that trading(god i hope not), all of your bitching/whining/moaning will really fall on deaf ears. i can see after reading all these pathetic posts that if they do decide to pull everything...it would be due to these insulting demands. seriously folks

    No Need
Something I just remembered after reading the latest posts: 1981, The "Aud" in Buffalo. Gates opened late. People were pushing toward the door. Flashes of the Who tragedy in Cincy. Deadheads crushed? I thought for sure the stampede to the floor would be a disaster. But the folks in the front turned around and said "No need!" People actually backed off! And it turned out to be an "orderly" entrance to the arena by the crowd. Maybe everyone needs to take one step back and think, "No need!" Have a great and grateful weekend!

Found this on archive.org from 2005
The last sentence seems fitting for this situation, this I assume was from the suits at Rhino after the ARCHIVE.ORG 2005 Change of Policy regarding SBD downloads.... STATEMENT TO MP3 SITE OPERATORS "The Grateful Dead and our managing organizations have long encouraged the purely non-commercial exchange of music taped at our concerts and those of our individual members. That a new medium of distribution has arisen - digital audio files being traded over the Internet - does not change our policy in this regard. Our stipulations regarding digital distribution are merely extensions of those long-standing principles and they are as follow: No commercial gain may be sought by websites offering digital files of our music, whether through advertising, exploiting databases compiled from their traffic, or any other means. All participants in such digital exchange acknowledge and respect the copyrights of the performers, writers and publishers of the music. This notice should be clearly posted on all sites engaged in this activity. We reserve the ability to withdraw our sanction of non-commercial digital music should circumstances arise that compromise our ability to protect and steward the integrity of our work." lethedoom: I have been enjoying saving the selections to disc and listening to them on my iPod at the gym. Is this possible in this new arrangement?

hey, this was great. i have enjoyed mondays, and especially have enjoyed not being chained to my computer to listen to the tapers section(mp3's and ipod, and what not). it probably was too good to be true. it's hard not to feel ungrateful, but... it's different now that it's streaming only. oh well, you guys did what you could. thanks for the effort.

Hey come on!!! I look forward to be able to listen to these carefully selected gems on my stereo, not on some dinky computer!! I love sitting back and reaching that moment of delight in the song the let's me why you Mr. Lemieux picked this specific selection, don't take that away!!!! I know you love the music as much as we do so I can't understand this decision. It's more than music, why tease us with downloads and then yank them away!! very wrong man. What's the deal! respectfully yours, Bruce

I'll add that I was trading being able to download the mp3s for buying the dead.net releases - my most recent two purchases were the 12/31/76 and 2/19/71 sets. I really loved the taper section, I loved David's choices and comments about the music. I can't stream at work. I valued being able to download the mp3s and use them as I saw fit. This is a bad move and I hope that it is reconsidered.

DL: I know this is not your fault so thanks for what you do. Rhino: Up yours Rhino, you can take the vault and hide it under a rock since that's what you pretty much are doing. Well besides throwing us turds like the 2-19-71. Thanks for taking the coolest part of the site away by removing the weekly downloads. Does anybody at RHINO know what the F they are doing???

lethedoom--I tried to use the wma format choice and it won't play im my FX browser or in IE 7.The Quicktime format works--is this my problem or DeadNet's? I join the line of supplicants requesting you to reinstate the 192kmp3 downloadable links--they provided delicacies with a quality rarely matched by any other source.

David, This was something to look forward to, now it is a has been. We all cherished these weekly treats and now they have become nothing more than a picture in the window that we can see let alone taker home. This is meant to the powers that be and not specifically you! Please let them hear our pleas to bring back this tasty little treat.

gespacho is absolutely right. I feel like a kid at his mother's teet - I know that I need to be grateful for what I have been given and blessed with. Yet, this is a loss and another disappointment to the Grateful Dead Community. If this falls to the right ears, with humility and respect, PLEASE know that we are purchasers of GD products, not moochers. We are supporters of all of the DVD releases, dead family cd's (between Dick's Picks, studio releases, Phil Lesh and Friends CD's, JGB, Kingfish, Robert Hunter, Rat Dog official releases I have purchased over 70 discs - not to mention the albums and cassettes) and having these downloads available is not keeping us from supporting the bands. If there is anyway to keep the OLD WAY rolling, I swear that my continued support is guaranteed. If we are unable to maintain this giving-tree in a responsible manner that will allow the Dead to continue to flourish, you have my understanding. But if at all possible, let us know if there is anything that we can do to keep this taper section rolling as it had. It means a lot to me, how much we'll never know....never know.Bless you all!!

...Otherwise the music I've enjoyed every Monday will be no more :-( Streaming is contrary to work policy and I am not inclined to sit at the PC at home. Thanks for the shows to date, nice selection. I'll miss them but will no doubt visit to read David's review.......and hopefully to find a reconsideration to format. Cheers, Greg

I have to add my voice to the long line of those who were deeply dissappointed todaya to find that the downloadable mp3's have been taken away. After the archive.org debacle, I vowed to cease doing business with 'the dead' in terms of buying things like Dicks Picks or Vault Releases etc. When this feature popped up on the new site I was just plain thrilled and immediately purchased a couple of remasters and started making plans for future purchases. Indeed, I was just a week away from a planned purchase of more official release material. I don't think I will be making those purchases now. Truely a sad change. I won't even bother to listen to these streams, The entire advantage of the downloadable mp3's was that I could take them, remix them together, and burn them to CD's and listen to them on the road, or while camping etc. Rhino, you really yanked our chains, and for me, I think this WILL be the last time.

Many of us cannot stream audio at work or simply don't want to listen to music on a computer. The downloadable mp3 was a great option that provided enormous flexibility to users. I can't believe that there is any substantial business reasons that require stream-only listening. Please consider going back to the downloadable mp3 option.

I fail to see the logic behind this bizarre decision, especially after 38 weeks of bliss. I really looked forward to Mondays, now it's like the old days again, just: "Monday - back to work" Bad move imho Dave. Loved it while it lasted, though, and I am very grateful for those 38 weeks. It is (was) rare to have one's anticipation so richly rewarded. You may rest assured that your labour of love was appreciated.

Thank you for the immense amount of music that we all have enjoyed along with details and stories that we have looked forward to every week. I have personally directed friends to this site and helped to share this music with sympathetic souls. Although I am very grateful for the last year of music I am joining together to ask if there can be an arrangement to continue to export the music. I buy every release that is made available, I listen at home, in the car, and at work. The only sacrifice I cannot make is to listen on computer speakers. It is sacrilegious. Thanks again. -thunder

Your company creates the problem by making it hard on fans by doing little things like this. I come here every Monday and dl the tunes and it makes my day. My computer won't even load the tunes now. I don't feel I am owed anything, but what is up with this corporate nonsense. You think people are burning all of the mp3's and making profit? Most everything in the vault is already out there anyways and Aud recordings--before you learn how to fuck those people--are still abundant. One of the previous comments said we will soon see 'Truckin' on a Ford commercial. I am sure it will get even worse than that. I don't see anything getting better in this organization anytime soon.

... I would not be so upset about no more Taper's Section downloads. I come to the Dead website for new music that I can take home and enjoy as I wish. But now, since I have every Dick's Picks that I want (every one from 1968 to 1981), and I have every Download that I want (every one from 1968 to 1980), and I own nearly every studio album, most every live album, plus Garcia CDs and Ace, Digga, etc. etc. there is no reason for me to come back. Clearly, as you can see from my purchasing history, the free Taper's Section downloads were not stopping me from spending money with you guys. On the contrary, those downloads opened my eyes to the great music played during the Dead's later years. Those downloads also brought me to this website every single Monday morning, nosing around for music. So here's some basic marketing advice. In order to make money you need to: 1. Entice people to your website. How? Free downloads every Monday! 2. Give people something new to buy. Not beltbuckles or babybibs but your core product -- music! So restart the Dick's Picks series, restart the Downloads, improve the Vault Releases and watch us spend, spend, spend! And, because the Dead have always been about spreading the music, toss us a bone and restart the Taper's Section downloads. You'll be glad you did. Scott Shindell
