The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Sorry to hear about the issues with discs, etc. Hope everyone is made whole. Mine was supposed to be delivered on Saturday (I paid for the expedited delivery and live in Chicago, the midwest's largest city and subsequently an easy target for sending a package to). Unfortunately, the UPS driver might have been stoned and delivered my set to the wrong address, which UPS clearly has but will not provide. They are "investigating" the issue and will let me know within 8 days or so. I did alert Dr. Rhino as well as the customer service email but have no updates from anyone. Will likely be around the east coast next week (due to nature of employment and the hurricane forecast) and likely will be a long time before I get a chance to hear this one, provided I get a copy prior to sell out, that is. Still would rather be in this position that for those in the path of the storm...

I got some problems!

I ordered the Pacific Northwest Box Set and it arrived yesterday #13093. I am going to preface this post with this: this is the first major issue I have had Dead.net. 95% of my purchases have gone off with without an issue. I am posting this because I know this will help others out but also it may just help to get my issue resolved as well. So after the box set arrived yesterday I wasn’t able to get to opening it or listening. I did read the reviews about some issues so I was worried a little. So as I got to opening it today, I did an inspection of all contents. I discovered upon inspection that Disc 1 has scratches on it. I have played disc 1 and at least the first 3 songs are skipping so far. I continued to inspect the other discs and this is what I discovered: Disc 7 has light scratches on it. Disc 9 appears to have light scratches as well. Dsic 19 has large scratches on it. Even more astounding is that disc 15 is completely missing! Although the package and all contents were intact when it arrived disc 15 was not included. This is my favorite (sarcasm intended of course)... So as another has already stated, as these arrive, everyone should make sure to check out the discs right away. Scratches suck and I haven’t yet played all of the discs yet to see if they are affected, but I am certain disc 19 will be. Of course a missing disc pretty much is the worst case scenario, so maybe it is good I am only missing one. I am hoping along with giving others the heads-up this will help me to get help if I can't get this resolved. With that being said, I love artwork on this box, almost too good to be true. More importantly I have listened to disc 2 some (checking for more anomalies), and what I hear sounds amazing. I really think this box set is great and I really want all of the music intact. Anyway I hope no one else has any issues like mine and certainly I did not intend on being dramatic. Although things could be worse, this situation for me is a little on the devastating side as I was waiting so long to get this box (I bought it on the first day it was on sale) only to have it arrive with these issues. I have contacted customer service but I do ask that if all you of send some good Force vibes my way so I can get this resolved, ti would be appreciated. Hopefully this will be taken care quickly. OK, that is all I got for now. Peace to all of you and stay safe out there.

Defective disc 3.

Oh Drat and Dagnabbit! After several years and (many) hundreds of dollars spent ordering from Dead.net, I have finally received a defective item. Disc 3 of the first show in the box has a bad scuff mark that will not play or rip. Any advice on what to do? Who is Dr. Rhino? How do I contact him or her? Returning the whole box for credit and re-ordering seems a little extreme. I should be able to send a defective disc in for replacement. (Well, their quality control should be better)

Got Mine Today

Haven't listened yet. Unboxed with my wife who is cool (loves the Dead) but has commented in the past that perhaps enough money and space has been dedicated to the Grateful Dead. So how'd the unboxing go? Two "wows", one "that's really nice", and one "very reasonably priced".

I got chills just opening this thing

It reveals itself slowly and each element builds on the last piece and points to the next: the top of the lid, the inside of the lid, a paper salmon plank wrapped around the booklet, the 6 shows and a little decorated wooden box with my edition number. I found myself slowing down and savoring the process. The word "sacred" even crossed my mind. It was a cool experience. As for the music: It's great: Bright and rich.

Of course! almost forgot that one. Willie Nelson also does a killer version. I guess we should give "Wabash Cannonball" an honorable mention, although I don't think its quite as great as the tunes mentioned so far. Definitely, the Dead/Jerry's "Smokestack Lightning" and "It takes a lot to Laugh.." are top shelf. I'm not sure what to make of "Click Clack" but need to give it a few more listens. Well, yeah its Beefheart, so you know....

Unbelievably powerful riff + Neil Peart's insane drumming and Geddy Lee's voice in its prime. I'd be remiss not to mention Terry Brown's mad production skills. I can't beat this for car songs Jimbo. I am not sure about either the Dead or Jerry being granted ownership of "Smokestack Lightning" and "It Takes a Lot To Laugh". The original versions of both songs, by Wolf and Dylan are great, though.

Jim, Born X-Eyed, thanks for the feedback on this show. I have an AUD copy. The Dark Star is a 3 parter that has an Attics and Sugar Magnolia. Top shelf. They play around with the Sugar Mag riff a bit in the beginning, and it's just fantastic.

Agree with daverock, this is a great vintage Stones tune. I first heard it on the “Garden State 78” double bootleg album. Another great train track from the Stones is Love in Vain, which I believe has already been mentioned.

Night Train and Crazy Train were the ones I meant as metaphorical. I probably put that sentence in the wrong spot, after the things it was referring to. Should have led with that. Tom Waits Downtown Train is really about stalking someone at a subway stop too. King of the Road is the old timey song I was trying to think of. Lots of train references.

Ha.. classic. I became exactly that happy the day my number quit appearing in the phone book. Now it appears only the really poor volunteer fire departments, cancer charities, disabled cops & vets (apparently without insurance) and credit card companies with much better rates than I currently have can access my phone records. Joy. Edit: A preemptive comment on disabled civil servants, hats off.. you have my support. I just don't trust telemarketers that somehow get my phone number can call me fifteen times a year. Most times very little money trickles down to the folks that need it and executives and shell companies gobble what they can first. No attempt on my part to be unkind.. I feel my $50 to archive.org each year is well spent.
