"We were in the Pacific Northwest...between somewhere in Washington and some other where in Oregon. The road took us to the lip on a ridge, from where we could see around us for many miles in all directions … It was breathtaking to behold, but as we watched, we had a firm realization that we were witnessing something even more beautiful than our eyes could ever take in … Life causes life. Heaven and Earth dance in this way endlessly, and their child is the forest. And so there we were, epiphanously watching that grandest and most glorious dance of life—of which we are just a tiny part—awed by a magnificence without beginning, without end..."

Bob Weir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now too.

    Get it while you can.

Is this box now sold out? They list it, but it seems like that is just some old data. Great set. I love it, but I don't have it physically. Not a huge deal, but it is very lovely.

I keep going back to this box - superb. Especially the 1974 shows. I went so far as to get 5/19/74 and the Playing in the Band from 5/21/74 on vinyl. There are a few problems with vocals on both, but this matters not a jot. The playing, as you say, from all band members, is absorbing. After 1970 they only needed Bill on drums.

I also agree with icecrmcnkd - a box of October 1974 with bells and whistles would make a great release.

Late to the party, but ...

... just wanted to share how delighted I am with the music in this set, and encourage anyone who’s not taken the plunge to just go ahead and get it already.

There’s been some chatter in another thread about how long it’s taking to sell out this box, and all I can say is that, as much as I love ’73 and ’74, I didn’t order mine till Rhino put it on sale. Maybe some people are settling for the 3-disc version, which is understandable, given the difference in price and given that they did manage to include some very high highlights (including the 45 minute PITB!) in that set.

Also causing some hesitation for me was the packaging. Don’t get me wrong: it’s beautiful! The art work is amazing. But speaking as someone who already has problems finding shelf space for my CDs, I wasn’t sure where I’d put this giant box. (In case anybody upstairs is listening: I thought the June 1976 box really hit the sweet spot between packaging that was elaborate enough to make the box feel special but also small enough to not cause problems.)

Anyway, the music. The MUSIC. For me, this era was flat out the best the band ever sounded, and it’s an incredible joy to hear them in such fine audio. There are a few “surprises,” the kind of vocal drop outs and oddities in the mix that would’ve rated a “caveat” back in the Dick’s days. Mostly, these are very temporary, and in all cases the sound is really really good once everybody settles in. As usual, Jerry’s louder than Bob, but you can hear them both very distinctly, and they constantly (constantly!) are playing their asses off. Phil’s on fire throughout. And BK? He makes a solid case here that the Dead never needed another drummer. Keith comes through nicely, and plays well. I suppose we could say that the vocals were erratic during this period, and I would admit that’s true here. But the singing is mostly good to great, and man oh man, the band sounds fantastic!

I’ve only listened to each show once so far—given the complaints about missing discs and whatnot, I felt like I should make a point of listening all the way through to make sure nothing was amiss—so I’m not really ready to call out a favorite show, or even favorite tunes. But I will say that the PITBs, the Bird Songs, the Eyes, the China-Riders are all, for me, as good as they get. Their playing was so spontaneous, so open, so powerful, so much soul, so imperfectly perfect.

Yes, I suppose there are other, equally worthy eras. But man, ’73 and ’74 were beautiful.

The hour or so of music from He's Gone through the end of Wharf Rat is one of the top 5 hours of music the dead ever played.

There, I said it. This box is worth every penny for that hour of music alone.

Testing with Lossless Audio Checker shows the June 1976 FLAC download in 24/192 format ( https://store.dead.net/music/digital/june-1976-flac-192-24-1.html ) and the Pacific Northwest '73-'74- The Complete Recordings FLAC download in 24/192 ( https://store.dead.net/music/boxed-sets/pacific-northwest-73-74-the-com… ) to be "Upsampled." I have notified Jeffrey Norman and Rhino. I sent Jeffrey the logs of the LAC test results showing 80% of the June 76 files being upsampled. While he was very nice in his response, he had no explanation for the finding. Rhino has not responded to any e-mails. It is important to note that the files on both test “Clean” after downsampling to 24/96, which, likely, means the files, were originally digitized at 24/96 or digitized at 24/192 and downsampled to 24/96 for mastering. Whatever the case Rhino needs to disclose this fact on their web site or change the files for sale to 24/96.

Greatest rock n roll band in the universe for all of eternity!!!!! And speaking of the birth of rock n roll, as discussed a few weeks ago, turns out it wasn’t the Beatles or Stones. Nor can I say who it was. But, on 3-25-72 Bo Didley says “1958, the year when rock n roll got a toe hold”....

A new series using the Bolo process. It's similar to Plangent except that the sound is delivered via high-tech miniature receivers hard-wired directly into the listener's auditory cortex. A bit cumbersome while in the shower or when getting a haircut, but worth it. The series will be called "Betty's Beauties" and will consist of one release per month until the vault is empty. No CDs, no shipping issues, no downloads. Music will be beamed directly to subscribers via geosynchronous satellites. Enjoy!

In the future soon, there will be need for a helmet that blocks all transmissions to the brain, we do not need big brother in our heads, do we? Hey, if they can put the dead in your head, what else can they put in there? or take out? I went from deadhead to headdead. Could be the basis for a good sci-fi book.

I certainly like the idea of more releases. Especially if they are pristinely remastered. I say, grease the wheels and feed the beast. Call it Rhino's Choice. Then with a tip of the cap, tell us you'll release 2.11.70, 2.13.70 and 2.14.70 in complete Plangent Process remastered form. This sets the precedent for an openness to remastering both previously released (could lead to re-release of FW 69 and others) and unreleased shows as well as setting a standard for performance quality. I'd sign up for that... Now I don't know that I need everything with Plangent Process. Would I say, no? Probably not. I'm just wondering if I would enjoy 4.2.73 any more if it was Plangent Processed--that show is probably the high water mark for sound quality with DaP (several others come to mind too like 1.22.78, 11.17.71, 12.6/7.71 and 8.25.72). I think 4.2.73 is a very good good show, but maybe not the best of 73, which admittedly is a high bar.

HENDRIXWOODSTOCK Wonder if there will be a 50th Anniversary Woodstock event. Dead & Co, Roger Waters, Who, Stones, Dylan, Steve Miller, Eric Burdon. That would be a good line up. Edit: Looks like there may be a Woodstock 2019.

Check this out sports fans!Beautiful, tiny Ford Amphitheater, 8/17+18/18 Can’t find a set list yet and a let’s just say a good time was had by all, ahem, it all rolls into one, so I’ll wait on the review.... Can you imagine if this “band” was actually a real, rehearsing, touring unit! Recollection was first night seemed a bit more tight? Smoking out of the gate, couple lulls in the second set, but overall hot night. Second night started out slower, but eventauly were able to hit the sonic blaster now and again. First night good UJB and great Shakedown to close first set (I think? Hey I’m old so STFU ; ) ) Second night surprisingly more dead; Great Scarlet, Stela Blue, Crazy Fingers, and a good, high energy St. Stephen, didn’t see that coming! I’m sure much of my opinion is experientally biased and by the awesome venue etc, but what they occasionally lacked in tightness or what not musically, they more than made up for with energy, vibe, love? .....they just had this incredible vibe physically pouring out of them, not counting $ per drumbeat in a stadium..... Friday, as Friday shows will be, the energy was amazing, the crowd, the band, the music. Saturday seemed to be a tad more laid back, and as I say, started a little slower. Friday seemed a bit more consistent, rehearsed? Hard to find right words to describe (fucking words!). Perhaps it’s because they were stepping out of the comfort zone on Saturday? But considering, I mean how much do these folks even play together? Oteil, what can I say, I love this guy. He has so much soul and love radiating from his body, it is still making me smile just thinking about it. He truly took this band to the next level. Melvin! Good ole Melvin, and who knew he could sing so well. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard him sing, but what an amazing version of Heavans Door he did, and of course with the Jerretts, very soulful. And a Trucks on drums, definetly felt this great ABB vibe in some jams, these guys could I’m sure easily bust out some Allman’s proper! THIS folks is what it’s all supposed to be about, the love, the music, the vibe. D&C was great, the Boulder Terrapin>St Steven>the 11 I got to see was awesome, and they have some great peaks, and there is some vibe, but something about the last 2 nights just seemed imho, to blow that all away. Nugs had it up, and would imagine just like the RR show last year will eventually be up for free? Check the clips out for a taste. Of course these stupid, dry, dierect audio feeds miss what the sound was really like but hey, it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye! https://youtu.be/fxJ0yEW9Veg https://youtu.be/3s8_vIM5OMc https://youtu.be/3s8_vIM5OMc

I was fortunate to work at 94. Still to this day unbelevable. We were assigned to the original site for first couple days, located up the hill near the big peace sign. Breifly at Liberty fest also, then only because we sold out of a uhual worth of merch were we able to hit the Big commercial Saugerties venue. By the time we drove up there and checked in etc, we hit the site around midnight on Saturday night. Saw the last acts of Saturday, which ended close to dawn. Sunday I was given the day off, so got to see Allmans brothers band with a very young Dereck Trucks on Same Thing, Santana, Traffic and Jimmy Cliff amount others. Being on site the next day was surreal, Hell the whole experience was! I won’t tell the whole tale unless all y’all ask for it....

Jim, I've heard about that same doctor who uses psychedelics. NPR did a story on it. Their reporter had to go "undercover" to get the scoop for themselves. Rough life sometimes. The doctor sets you up in his office, and gives you some headphones. Sounds good so far . . . Except he insists that the patient listens to his own "curated" playlist. It sounded like a lot of classical, and ambient sounds type of stuff. I'd show up with my FW 69 box and be like "Yo doc, I got this." Later on the reporter talked about how every time he listens to that piece of music it "takes him back.". "Research shows that sensory experiences under psychedelics can leave lasting imprints." Mrs. Deadguy and I look at each other and snicker. Research, huh? I guess that's what you could call it.

Free speech, as a constitutional right doesn't apply in a private venue such as this. If I host a website and I don't like what somebody has to say, it's my right to disable them, and I violate no law by doing so. This message board is an extension of a business. If people are providing links to copyrighted material or pornography, then the web host has a responsibility to shut that person down.

Interesting book published earlier this year called "How To Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics" by Michael Pollan. I would be doing it a disservice by trying to paraphrase it, but it does reframe the various drugs perceived histories, and suggests ways to overcome the baggage of the past, so that they might be beneficially integrated into mainstream society. Fascinating book.

Yes, that is a great book. Pollan gives such a unique perspective. Whereas most people first experiment with psychedelics in their youth, he does it in middle age, as a self-described "square". He gives a great description of listening to a Bach cello suite on mushrooms. Also, he describes an awful experience smoking toad venom (ouch!) There are some great conversations with Pollan on youtube, with Joe Rogan and Sam Harris, among others.

While you are 100% correct the owners of a private web site have every right to make their own rules to say they have a responsibility is an obscenity. Define pornography. Yeah just like Justice Potter Stewart you know it when you see it or if you don't like it. And for copyright you're kidding right? Everyday on this site it's violated but you like it so it's ok. Many here,I believe. like to think we're different and hold to a higher standard. And don't think it's such a good idea to take the role of personal arbiter. Especially when the person in question is not personally attacking a specific person but simply acting in an obnoxious manner. We are loosing a bit more each day as in my earlier mentioned private schools speech codes. Another example is the ACLU's recent announcement that in its own Orwellian way some speech is more important than others and they will stop fighting for certain unpopular speech....a disgrace. Man up and fight for something we have more of than any other country in the world, constitutionally protected free speech. Not Canada not France not even England. Marye please think long and hard before you censor an unpopular post

There actually are laws that define pornography. And If you host a website with a message board such as this, and you allow pornography to be accessed through it, you are also hosting pornography and therefore are responsible to abide by the laws and regulations that govern the distribution of pornography (such as posting a message that identifies the site as having adult content). Yes there are laws that apply to copywrite protection. You're admitting in your argument that it's okay to break that law because you see it regularly. Why don't YOU man up and stand up for a law that is actually being violated. No, I don't personally use youtube to listen to music I didn't pay for. And yes, I think if someone is being obnoxious with their postings, better to snuff it out than call it free speech. What shirdeep posts a new link every 30 seconds, so that you have to scroll through a mile of his postings just to use the message board for what it was intended to be used for? Is that okay? Not even you can defend that as free speech, but you're going to decide what constitutes the degree of obnoxiousness that will be tolerated? (you know it when you see it, right? shoe's on the other foot). Shirdeep's postings serve no purpose for this site as it was intended to be used, a lot of people have asked him to stop, and he keeps posting more. That's not free speech. It's great that you seem to be some kind of free speech / civil rights activist, however, you're defense of this particular issue is fanatical. For all you know, shirdeep is in bot mode. You sound like a good guy, but this ain't about free speech in any shape way or form. Not a judge in town that would agree with you. I take offense to your telling people to "man-up" because they're not fighting your fringe free speech argument. Your assignment for the day is to go to youtube and find 10 videos that are posted in violation of copywrite laws, and report them to youtube (hint - I'll know if you didn't do your homework by your daily report to me, which I'll be accepting no later than 5pm Pacific).
