As we move toward the symbolic end of summer (Labour Day, of course), we have some great music to play spanning about 21 years of Grateful Dead music, from 1968 to 1989, two fine years with which to bookend this week’s offerings.
Our first entry this week is the encore from 8/21/68 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, a nice, juicy Midnight Hour. Although not quite as prevalent at shows in 1968 as it had been in 1966, the Grateful Dead continued to play monster versions of this Pigpen vehicle.
Next we’ll stop into 1972, to the opening night of the rightfully famous Europe 72 tour, to 4/7/72 in London. From the middle of that night’s first set is a typically hot 1972 rendition of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.
In 1976, at the end of their very successful summer of comeback shows, the Grateful Dead entered the studio and recorded a couple of the songs they’d been playing that summer. From one of those sessions on 8/29/76 is this bare-bones Dancing In The Street with only Donna on vocals. While we’re in mid-1970s mode, we also have this terrific Samson and Delilah from 5/12/77 in Chicago. Despite the frequency that song was played in 1976-1977, they never seem to get tired of it, always offering up an inspired rendition.
Finally from the 1970s, on 4/22/78 in Nashville to be precise, we are pleased to bring you a couple of tracks from the second set, starting with the second set opening Lazy Lightning>Supplication and the pre-Drums Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World, both very nicely performed songs on this night.
Our last stop this week is in New Jersey on 7/10/89, a show that took place in and out of a massive thunderstorm. By request, we have the first set closer, The Music Never Stopped, and from the start of the second set, a great 1989 combination of Foolish Heart, Just a Little Light, Playing In The Band>Uncle John’s Band. What a great tour.

We talked about it every week - we rocked out. We learned. We had community again. We bought more stuff from you anyway. Don't you get it, this is us! We have and will always buy every crumb you put out PLUS wallow in the love that was this section.
So sad. Just a couple of lawyers and a little mouse-click file save and WHOOSh its gone. Yeah right here's a little flippin' soda straw to look at the sunset with now....

Olampali, You Miss the Point
It is not about the specific context of a particular Garcia quote.It is the fact that we already paid for this music, in ticket sales the first time around, and in gas, sweat and tears. I don't care who said what when. I was there and I know the understanding we had with the band. The Grateful Dead no longer exists. Some people wish to support themselves off of their former association with our band. Some corporations see an opportunity for profit. Fine. The estate of Elvis is still rakin' it in too. Sure I'd love to hear what is in the vaults, and up to now was willing to pay for it. Money is not my concern at this point in life. I no longer have to hitch rides and sleep on sidewalks. But integrity and honesty do matter. Most of the music is out there somewhere, free where it belongs. Lets forget about the freakin' vault if the guardians are not worthy of the task. We've got the shows. Lets share em and dance, and leave the archiving, bean counting and profit-mongering to those with nothing better to do.

I guess if Rhino wants money from us, then they should put up the downloads and we'll buy them. I just purchased 3 from the Vault, not the best release, but I bought it anyway. The tapers section was a good stop-gap, but best to have the whole show. Might want to begin with the '67 show we've gotten a taste of on the tapers section.
But this is probably a good move by Rhino; there are lots of cd's from other artists I've been putting off. Time to hit Amazon for latest James McMurtry cd.

..But I do not miss the point.First, I am referring only to folks who specifically cite Jerry and quote him as the difinitive answer to the music flowing freely.. If you don't care who said what..then I'm not really referring to you.
Second., we paid for shows with our tickets. We got into the gig. Nothing more really.
The gas, sweat and tears are up to you. But try getting a discount at a theater or a raise at your job for the gas you spend getting there...won't happen.
Third, I was most definitely there as well. On the bus in 70. I saw folks gettin' hassled by the you-know-whos in the crew for taping early on. Many early auds were stealthy.
Btw, Owsley detested the tapers.
The GD saw the futility and errors of their ways about audience taping and finally let it go....but t'was not always thus.
Of course none of this really pertains to the soundboards which are, without any doubt, complete property of the band. Even Rhino is only a 10 year licensee
I agree about much of the music being out there and not to fret about the vault.
At this stage, I'm just looking for lost film footage.

What a travesty!
I guess nothing good ever lasts, but this new format is HUGELY DISAPPOINTING! There was nothing better than to be able to put these gems of dead music on my mp3 player and listen whenever i wanted. Now it's only in streaming version?! I wish there would be the courtesy of explanation why this move was made.I used to look forward to Mondays like it was Christmas! Now it's just not as good to have to stream to listen. It was like a slap in the face when i saw the change!
Anyway, think those who oppose this could petition to bring the prior format back?
Rhino Takes the "Grateful" out of Grateful Dead
What? No more downloads? SHOCKING. Rhino (Jackass?) has once again sullied the selfless reputation of the Grateful Dead. Downloading snippets of classic shows was a great way to reward the loyalty of deadheads, and to keep the vibe alive. Of course, the uptight, Celine Dion loving suits would rather squeeze every last penny out of the fans...
It really is a shame.

Last time I heard, DeadHeads share the music, man. We supply the tapes, the Dead supplies the music. Get the drift?? Hence, the taper's section.......

Thanks to David Lemieux for his efforts. However, remember that one is known by the company one keeps. Personally I wouldn't want to be associated with an Indian giver. (Sorry if that phrase is now politically incorrect as well as always having been historically inaccurate.)
I suppose the disadvantages of this new streaming format are pretty obvious, but here's my list:
1. Downloading anything else while streaming makes it unlistenable.
2. One track at a time; no playlists.
3. No display of the current track's show date, time remaining, etc.
4. No ability to equalize for my speakers.
5. Must connect computer to audio system to get decent fidelity.
6. Can't burn an audio tape or CD for computer-impaired friends.
7. Can't trade files.
8. Can't archive files for when the internet is unavailable.
9. Can't copy to portable audio player.
If Rhino is the entity that eliminated the mp3s, then I guess I'll just have to avoid Rhino products.

It is an unfortunate reality for many of us that we can't sit by a computer all day long (or even for any significant amount of time) listening to music. For me I have to be stuck in traffic to be able to listen to a long segment of music.
I hope that whoever made this decision gives it another consideration.

Archive.org Debacle Part Deux
Same crap, different setting. When they took the SBD downloads away on The Archive, no explanation for days. They mess with something good again here, again with no immediate explanation. That's all most of us want really. Just tell us why. Please?

picky deadheads
take a moment to realize that this music belongs to the grateful dead first and us, the deadheads, second. We should be thankful for the amazing FREE selections that we are able to get...be it streaming or downloadable mp3's. now, I like the rest of you are dismayed that we can't save these gems to disc anymore....but still they are still hooking us up with a window on the vault...its better than nothing and especially better than the snail's pace of official releases lately.
Chill out,take a bong rip,drink some wine, do some yoga, take a step back and stop complaining and whining about every little detail on the site.

Add my name to the list of people upset over the new format. I too looked forward to Mondays to see what David would put up for us. Now I will be taking the Dead site off my list of weekly visits. This sucks. Very un-Dead like if you ask me too.

Well, I discovered this site about two months ago and have been enjoying not only the new releases each Monday, but also slowly but surely catching up on all of the previous weeks' postings in the archives. When I found out that new stuff would not be downloadable, I was pretty bummed, but took solace in that I would still be able to get all of the previously posted material. (Some weeks I still haven't looked at, and some I only downloaded a few tunes, thinking eventually I'd be able to go back and get it all.)
Forgive me if someone has already made this observation (I haven't read every post), but even the old tracks in the archives can now only be streamed!
I guess one way of looking at it is that I have a bit more live Dead than I had two months ago. Unlike some others, I'm not particularly pissed, just kind of disappointed that such a cool thing (apparently) had to end. (This feeling, incidentally, is somewhat akin to having just experienced a, shall way say, less-than-stellar Dead show ... not angry, just sadly disappointed knowing that it could have been better.)

Explain the decision to deep-six the mp3 format. Unless this decision is reversed, I will not be visiting this site again. And you can bet I won't buy anymore Grateful Dead CDs. Rhino has made a clusterf*ck of the show downloads, the Dick's Picks, vault releases and now these. So are we surprised by this move? As a longtime Deadhead and loyal customer, it sure seems like they are, *at best*, incompetent. I know this not to be true because if one visits their site at rhino.com they have all sorts of great re-issues, new releases, box sets and the like. One must ask, then, why are they screwing the pooch when it comes to their arrangement with The Grateful Dead?
Rhino and to whomever else it may concern, surpise us. Provide some answers, MARKET some music (you know downloads, CDs, DVDs, and the like?), stop killing off people's love and passion for the Grateful Dead you Ship of Fools!
Please Reconsider the removal of downloadable music....
I also ask you to reconsider this latest move to streaming audio only. If there is something we as a community need to do to get what used to be, back to what is, please tell us.

I'm just as bummed about the streaming, but can we limit our comments to ones that make sense.
1. Yes, Jerry did say once they play it, its the audiences. Fine. Did he say it like a proclamation? Did he say it more than once? Did he preach to the masses? Didn't he say it like I don't know 30 years ago? He said it in an interview. Most of you look to this as gospel - when it was an offhand comment at best. Plus, the big guy's gone and has been for 12 years. May be time to move on a bit.
2. This has all been to whet our whistle, Rhino hoping for us to cash in and buy more product. It will work cause I really want to complete some shows! And guess what, you have every right not to purchase it as well and show your distaste for the man.
3. Email, call, write send a smoke signal out to your Deadhead friends - TRADE FOR THESE SHOWS!! Most are out there on cd (before archive fiasco). Go out there and find them, BE A COMMUNITY - NOT AN INDIVIDUAL DOWNLOADING AND LOOKING TO GRAB AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. The GD talked about being a community so work on it. Or shut up!
4. Read # 3 again, that's what Jerry was talking about. In my opinion of course.

Streaming sucks
I'm done here too, if this is the future of the site, it is pretty sad. Anyone that cares about lossless audio knows that MP3's are substandard as far as sound quality so why not let us have them?

Hey, how ya doin'? W E L L L LLLLL, I have to agree with the vast majority of concensus's...I detest "quacktime", always have. I read the notice stating that the downloads are now through either them, or W.M.audio. Now, when I attempt to save it, it only offers me the "quacktime" option. I know I aint the brightest bulb in the swamp, but, this is a poorly proposed & may I add, non-coheasive developement in the Dead World Roundup. I vote to return to the happy, fun-filled & user-friendly arrangement we enjoyed so fruitastically, before such a rash, unthoughtout change in the Etheruniverse. (please pardon my spelling)

Direwolf13 needs to get w/ the program. This music has always been free & should be. That is the way GD wanted it ( not just Jer). That's why Phil had issues with the rights of the GD vault. Now someone else is trying to make a buck off it. This is not the way this COMMUNITY works buddy!!

Folks at Rhino. Your dilemma is understood, but I thought we settled this whole thing years ago when the Dead first allowed taping and trading. It DIDN'T reduce record sales or concert attendence, it created a desire for MORE. I like to listen in my car, to and from work, or where ever I can drag that IPod, the lake, rivers, mountains.. The more I hear the more I want and since there aren't any new shows to attend, where am I going to go? I can't stream at work either, and listening in my small office at home is not the best surroundings. Reconsider. It can only help your business in the future. Good will counts, on both sides of a transaction.

This is very uncool, I have bought everything released to date from the GD STORE!!!! I will always buy anything released to support the band but you people at RHINO are making me rethink that theory. This and the GDH were two really cool things to look forward to every week and you have cheapened them to streams? WTF?!?! First GDP licenses the vault to a bunch of know-nothing hacks at Rhino who are basically doing nothing with it. Now you've ended the single best thing happening on this site by making these tracks available on by streaming them. The only thing you guys seem to be successful at is pissing off fans with this inconsistent nonsense. You guys should just pack it up and go home, because you just can't seem to make up your mind with how to handle a gold mine of music. It's pathetic.

Wah! Bring back the 192k Mp3's. I echo everyone else. I spend moneyon Dick's picks etc. But I really enjoy being able to download this
wonderful music and create my own CD's.
I know change is inevitable, but if you want people to be able to
enjoy the music, you actually have to let them LISTEN to the music.
Quite frankly, this blows. It's NOT a happy Monday today.

Believe it or not, the whole world does not have broad-band which makes streaming readily possible. Although it takes me all week to download the weeks selections in Mp3, at least I got to hear them! Looks like I am back to trading for whatever shows/sources are in circulation as was the case when Dick's Pick's ended and the digital download series began. Thanks for a great thing while it lasted!

im grateful for what you have relased to date,but it was almost better that you did not. are you guys that money hungry? we will buy any releases regardless of what you offer us for free. first it was live archive, now you double cross us on the actual web site of the dead. no class on your behalf. i will no longer go to your web site and i will stop encouraging others to visit the site. bring back the free downloads and i will reconsider. i like many other have a right to speak because i helped support the dead through the years. thanks for breaking our hearts again.

It is very difficult for me to witness the slow death of the grateful dead (I often struggled while the band was still intact) - it may take only another 50 to 100 years before corporate America and their ilk hammer the final nails - thanks for the memories.....

so sad. i'm not much of a writer but the feelings i have now are akin to those i had on 8/9/95. of course not as much, but i'm reminded nonetheless.a sad reminder that everythig evolves, and maybe the band we thought so unique on every level isn't so much so any more. oh well, we still have that sweet music...wait, maybe we don't have that so much either.

while it's true it's not mine, and i'm not entitled to any part of it, i'm still very sad and very disappointed.
My Feeback
OK, I submitted my 'Feedback' in protest of this move, thought I would share it with you good people here:
"You took away something that I and my fellow Deadheads had grown to love. Yes, you own the music, but was released in The Tapers Section was not suitable for CD/DVD release anyway. If you are going to prevent the further downloading of Grateful Dead live material, where are the new releases to compensate.
What you don't seem to understand is two things:
1) That most Deadheads are very reasonable people. Tell us why you are doing what you are doing and we may just be cool with it.
2) By not releasing more live material for sale, you are preventing yourselves from making more money. Release more concerts->sell more CDs/DVDs/Downloads. Simple business concept. Really. Seriously, if you release more concerts for sale, I will buy them. I really will. Just do it already. If not, then let us download what David was generously making available in The Tapers Section for free.
Bottom line is that all I want is an explanation. I, along with my fellow Deadheads, feel that with we deserve that at the very least."
