    Tape Trade Policy

I posted this in the taper forum, but thought this may be the better spot (also, patience is not a virtue of mine). I am sure this exists in written form somewhere, I just can't seem to find it.

What is the official band policy for trading in shows that have been officially released? Specifically, I am wondering about the ones that were released officially but are out of print. Seems to me that if they are not for sale currently, we would not be costing the band money by trading those shows. In fact, the only folks it would cost are those selling the out of print releases at a profit on the secondary market. Just curious what the official policy is on this considering the volume of official releases these days.

Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

essentially it was a dead album with everyone on board contributing except for Micky who was on a sabbatical, (as i see it) and Pig, why wasnt Pig contributing? was he too sick at the time?

    RE: NYE '69

CC, your post invites a bit of confusion by suggesting that you saw both the Dead and TSOC on the same NYE bill at Winterland in '69; though 50 years is an understandably long time. It's hard to imagine, but the Dead were not playing on a West Coast home field that December 31st, and were rather in the midst of an odd eastbound triptik that took them to Dallas on 12/26, Hollywood (FL) on 12/28, and the Boston Tea Party on 12/29-30, while closing out at the Fillmore East on 1/2-3/70.

Indeed, the '69 NYE playbill on the poster you linked does not name the Dead. So TSOC and the GoGD were on opposite coasts at the decade's close. In any event, here's a link to a CM SBD for the Dead's '69 NYE show:
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1969/12/31?source=87994

Incidentally, I couldn't find a poster for Boston NYE, but here's one from the night before (it would appear the promo dept. missed the spirit of the "grateful" dead; you'd think an impossibly early incarnation of Maiden was playing that night!):
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YQBsfGwVEeo/TUSkqEWWy3I/AAAAAAAARQs/qRvbGdWK_…

However, you are correct that the Dead played NYE '70 at Winterland, but, consistent with the playbill cited in Deadbase50, the following promo poster does not show TSOC on the same stage, but rather NRPS, "assorted friends" (apparently Hot Tuna), and Stoneground (note also, "lights by Little Princess 109").
    https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/8448089/il_570xN.542921874_q4nc.jpg

Checking Deadbase, here's a link to what seems the complete NYE '70 show; however, it appears to be mix of AUD and FM broadcast that provides poor sound quality through Cumberland (even so, the Truckin' opener is well worth a listen), but thankfully improves in time for the set's highlights at Cryptical and China>Rider through close at UJB.

Regardless of which show you attended, either would've been a great way to kick off your own personal attendance record! Got a story?/K

I can not find the 1st GD show I attended anywhere in GD archives. No GD archive lists the same bands that I saw that night, as confirmed by the Sons archive which has the poster from that night:

<<Wednesday, December 31, 1969: '1969 New Years Eve 1970', Winterland 2000 Post Street at Steiner Street, San Francisco, California
The band was billed only as 'The Sons' on the poster printed for this show. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna. Lights by Brotherhood of Light. This show, from 8:00pm to 8:00am, was promoted by Bill Graham Presents In San Francisco.>>

    limited releases logic explained

Could you please explain the logic of "limited releases" as it applies to an "alternative" business model, such as the grateful dead" The "limited release" model is a concept taken from the good old music biznezz, in order to promote sales, keep prices high, and maintain collector value of limited products.
I "missed" the window for daves pick's 30, a rare release from the year 1970, the first show that I recorded 1/3/70. I was disappointed, but managed to get one on a record/cd selling site. I paid double, but I still saved $$$, as I do not want to purchase a "subscription" to the daves picks yearly releases, as I am primarily interested in obtaining music from the 1966-1970 period, and not many releases are from these years. I guess I could always buy a subscription, and then sell off the unwanted items on another site for a profit, which is what this concept does, encourages a "black market". I do not consider this to be "progressive" in the least. I would rather purchase through GDCORP, as I have in the past, but if GDCORP wants to encourage this type of atmosphere, I am forced to participate in order to get what I want, and I am grateful to the sellers who have made it possible to get what I want. But it sure seems contrary to what Jerry's idea of business was.

I checked, and I was wrong: you DO need to create a separate account for the Store. Let me know if you have problems doing this.

When does the subscription offer to 2011 Road Trips end? In other words, when do I have to get my payment in so I can take advantage of this offer?

on the page. And, in other news, I am told that the tracks on the bonus disc will be unique to that disc and not repeated elsewhere.

Allis, I don't know if you're still 'here' but I bought the Texas Road Trips set and got the bonus disk. IIRC the second disk was a bad pressing. It looked like pretty swirly rainbow watercolors under the outer edge of the plastic and would only play the first half, then start to skip more and more until the poor CD player would completely lose the plot, give up and holler for its mama. Anyway! I called the customer service number and after one -- yes, one -- relatively brief and very polite conversation the folks shipped a new CD (not the whole set, darn it! :)) within a couple of days that was just exactly perfect. I do need to think a bit about the Road Trips subscription package but not because of any problems or concerns what-so-ever about the store or the staff. Scott

Regine "Pegi", Prinzess of Hohenzollern (yeah, he wasn't lieing. It is me).Edelweiss. I am so glad to see contact from remainder of Grateful Dead in my mail. I always feel so much better when I put a Dead disc on the machine. But I haven't done it. I haven't done much of anything except keep my stepdad from dieing. Got six out of seven diabteoc wounds healed. Seems the loss of my "Baby Cats" took the heart out of me. Haven't been out to sing, haven't put a disc on to spin, haven't had music in my ears. Not except by default; an infomercial from the 60' & 70's which woke me up. Just not me anymore. Some things tear your heart out. It's happened too often. I'm exhausted. Am trying to do my new blog, http://prinzessinhohenzoller.blogspot.com but even that, I don't keep up. Except for Mannheim Steamroller found at the local Lowe's Hardware, haven't even thought about music. And before, I couldn't live a day without it. God the way things in this land are set up to destroy us. It's cheaper for them. Please keep sending the emails. I might reconnect with myself again. Love and Peace, Pegi Regine

Last summer I saw this guy wearing a shirt that said Grateful Dead AARP tour on it. It had a picture of a skeleton covered in roses using a walker. It also said something like "livin on meds vitamin C and Rogaine," A play on the line from Truckin. I've been looking for this shirt ever since. It would be perfect for my uncle! If anyone knows where to get one please please let me know!

Here's a link to Music by Jerry, under the heading "The Band. http://www.dead.net/musicby/Jerry+Garcia Doodle around for the music by Bob, Phil, Vince and Brent. I see "Passenger" is listed under Phil, although Donna, then Brent, seem to be the primary vocalists. Check this site out for all sorts of info: http://www.deaddisc.com/index.html

Why don't the track listings appear for most of the music items in the store? See the store item pages for Dick's Picks 30 or Steppin' Out for example. It seems an important enough detail to include. Or, am I just missing it. Hmmm.

Hi there. I pre-ordered through this site, but haven't received a confirmation e-mail. Should I have? Should I simply assume that the order went through? Thanks, Joanne Dinsmore

but if you ordered when the site was crashing etc. on the first day, I'd follow up with customer service. If you reserved a copy when the reservation system went up, you should be hearing back shortly with ordering instructions. It is better to check with customer service than to just assume all is well, though.

as I have never heard of replacement jackets being available for recordings. I'd suggest looking on eBay in case somebody who leaves their CD in the rental car (only to have the rental car deny all knowledge of course) and finds themselves with an empty jacket decides to make a buck off it. But unfortunately it wasn't Road Trips I had this experience with...

Warner Brothers states it will not be responsible for actors of God like the USP Man stealing your E72 customized box because he was stoned. Neither shall they be responsible for your neglect of the weather in the Florida keys. It's all written into the fine print that absolves them of all legal action due to illegal substances and the 1968 "Thick Air" Bob Weir requested for Born Cross-eyed.

As of at least Febr. 12th, possibly before, Phil Lesh's web site has been missing in action. No re-direct, nothing. I find no mention of this at the fan site's forums, (PhilZone), anywhere-- only chatter on other stuff. Can anyone shed some light as to what my favorite instrumentalist on the planet is up to with that gorgeous chunk of cybersapce he developed? A moderator, if one exists? Anybody? Thanks. Sonic'72

Hi Marye, Before I ask my question(s) I just wanted to say to you that for the past two months I have noticed that you are just an incredibley hard working, huge hearted, fully responsive and priceless piece to all that is Dead.net and I want to thank you for all that you do... you rock! I am new to the Vine world and now find myself addicted... once again, I think your the one responsible for this :-) I have "met" some really cool people (well, interated with) through this vine and I can't wait to see the next door that Dead.net opens for me... I am looking for new vines, outside of the Dead family... like Mechelle N'degecello (sp?), Prince and/or other funky stuff... Are there other Deadheads like me that also have a funky side? Also, Road Trips... Any idea what the remaining 3 releases will be (what periods?). You don't have to divuldge the actual dates. Finally, yes Europe '72 !! I can't wait for the Suitecase... any tidbits that can be shared? Please ? Much love & respect, iGrateful

I am new to the forum scene here- and a great one it it! I was just wondering, in most (if not all) the forum topics, it says "You are not allowed to post" or something to that nature. If I wanted to post a new topic about the Greatful Dead movie being re-released this April, how & where would I do that? I would imagine a lot of heads (and those who never got to see the band) are excited about this event and it would be cool to hear about that. Thank you!

you would send me a PM about it. I'm the forums moderator and I can start topics. This is a basic chaos management issue. In this particular case, I suspect something more official is coming down the pike, but in the meantime, no reason we can't start something...

I'm not sure. He used to be pretty active on old Dead.net, now Deadnet Central/DNC, but when I checked over there the other day on the occasion of his birthday he didn't seem to be around so much anymore. I'll look into what the current PO Box status is because my brain is stuck in the old reality on that one (and it's Saturday so no one's around to ask) and I don't want to give you bad advice, but I'm sure there still exists some mechanism for writing a letter and having it forwarded, as it were. I'll let you know what I find out.

We have already agreed to a shipping cost of $85..I very much hope that is not going to change ...so what are the differences between shipping by UPS or USPS? thanks
