"We were in the Pacific Northwest...between somewhere in Washington and some other where in Oregon. The road took us to the lip on a ridge, from where we could see around us for many miles in all directions … It was breathtaking to behold, but as we watched, we had a firm realization that we were witnessing something even more beautiful than our eyes could ever take in … Life causes life. Bob Weir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now too.

    Get it while you can.

The internet has NOT made it to Europe yet. We still communicate with the "Albanian telephone", you know, the one where the two cans are connected by a thin rope and the trick is to keep it taut. Easier said than done on International calls. Success in the UK, Hippychic.

Number 1 super guy. Just laughed at your "some sort of high school thing going on comment". Pheromones in the air I guess. And not to be overly suggestive, but I would. I always regarded the 11/2/77 Truckin' as the best until 11/6 came along a couple months ago. Now I'm stuck. Baller, you're still voting 11/2? I have take the back2back test. A little off topic, but Pearl Jam jettisoning fans came up. Agree with Keith fan, the main issue I have with Pearl Jam is their last several albums have been extremely weak compared to the first half of their catalog. I also noticed they don't play that loud. I guess in their minds they want to protect people's ears but fuck that, I don't go to a rock concert to have my ears protected I go to have them blown out. Play that music loud and if I need to put cotton or earplugs in I'll do it. I admired Pearl Jam's fight against Ticketmaster, but it did make them difficult to see in the early days. My biggest complain is that stupid Eddie Vedder was too stupid to keep his stupid politics off stage. All bands have their politics but they don't all put them on stage. If Eddie Vedder had any sort of top shelf song writing ability, he would veil his politics like Pete Townsend dead in Won't Get Fooled Again and let's see action and many others. You cannot discern Townsend's political affiliation from his songs, but he clearly has plenty to say about politics. That's how you get it into a rock song, not by calling out politicians by name. Wearing masks and hanging effigies and all kinds of stupid shit like that. The worst part is he's another douche who doesn't bother to present an equal representation of each side. He takes what appeals to his emotion and runs with it. It's his right, but people find it tiring. Eddie can revel in his sycophantic relationship with Townsend and the Who, but he will never equal them. Unless he has some rocket sauce up his sleeve for the next 10 years, and for the sake of rock and roll I hope he does.

And best of luck in the UK! Your treasure chest will await your return. For those who loved the Other One> Me & My Uncle> Other One with M&MU Jam in the second half on DaP 26, I was listening to the 2015 bonus disc that came from the Academy of Music shows, and while I love the main Pick's insanely timed M&MU> Other One segue, I hadn't listened to the bonus disc version in a long while. I did so this evening and was pleasantly surprised to hear a M&MU Jam in that Other One, it lasts about a minute from around 7:45 in or so, and instead of taking it into full cowboy territory it peters out after a bit, and Jerry starts the Other One riff on single notes, with Phil picking it up after a bar. I know there must be other Other Ones like that, I failed to notice is 3 years ago (which may be when I last listened), but that one will be added to my regular Other Ones. Not too dissonant and out there. After enjoying the ensuing Wharf Rat, I switched over to the Thelma bonus disc. That Dark Star is very nice. It gets dissonant and into feedback territory, but still very cool. Which reminds me, did we ever get confirmation from Dave that that was the Dark Star with "very unusual Phil activity" mentioned in the Dave's 6 booklet as a recently returned show?

Nice meeting all you. I am headed out next week to make it big overseas. I was not expecting to go so soon, but opportunity is knocking. This really puts a left hand monkey wrench into receiving my box set on time :(I read the forums here for a long time before I joined the discussions and will try to keep up. I will hopefully have a moment now and then to say hello in the not too distant future. But it is goodbye for now there's much to do! Be nice to each other boys. Au revoir! It hurls by the man, and he snatches it from the air and hands it back to her. "This is so embarrassing," the woman says, and she pops her eye back in place. "I'm sorry to have disturbed you. Let me buy dinner to make it up to you. May I join you?" He nods. The woman is a stimulating conversationalist, stunningly pretty, and the man finds they have a lot in common. He gets her phone number and asks, "You are the most charming woman I've ever encountered. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?" "No," she replies. "You just happened to catch my eye."

That observation caught my attention-and it seems to have been true. The Dead seemed to take their audience with them through all their stylistic changes. It surprised me, when I first started listening to them. The difference between "Live Dead" and "Working Mans Dead " is massive-even allowing for the fact that the former is obviously live. But "Skull and Roses" is also completely different from "Live Dead", and I used to wonder if they lost and gained fans during these transformations. They probably attracted a lot of new, less radical fans after 1970, with their more country flavoured/traditional music-maybe a lot of their original fans faded away at that point-but this isn't reflected in anything I have ever read. Going on into the 70s, "Blues For Allah" again seems to have no connection to anything they released earlier. The only other person I know of who radically changed their sound and approach to such an extent in the 70s was David Bowie. Phil head-I'd pull the trigger... this second! I don't know how many are left, but this looks like one of the all time not to be missed releases.

Dark Star- Yes, I still have 11/2/77 Truckin as my favorite over 11/6. Guess it's a "first love" thing. What's interesting about DaP 25 is that I wasn't excited about that release at all, I thought that I had my fill of 77 after GSTL came out. But I find myself reaching for that show all the time now, I really dig it. In Dave I trust.

Mine would look very similar, but I can never decide if FW69 or E72 is tops. They flip flop. Note for note, FW69 is the one, but the sheer volume of glory in E72 is hard to overlook. I'd probably knock 30 Trips down to behind GSTL too, but again, it's splitting hairs.

I hate to be a complainer but I am really annoyed here. If the release date is 9/7/18, shouldn't the set be shipped in time to arrive today??? Dave's Pick always arrive on release day. I've got some cool stuff happening this weekend that I've been envisioning this set being the soundtrack for. Now I get my shipping notice and it's going to arrive on Monday? To say that I'm bummed is an understatement. I guess I'll try to psych myself up for receiving in time for the...middle of the work week.

unless you are really new here, this happens every box release.based on past experiences since rhino licensed the vault, this seems to be the usual release day stuff. paying extra to get it expedited, makes you think you might get it on release day, but expedited shipping only works once it has already gone on sale and is in the warehouse. there is no difference in delivery time on preorders, everything goes out UPS at the same time the day before it goes on sale. preordering a digital set is a crap shoot, people are still waiting for the July 1978 flacs that they preordered. CA time is when the digital links will go online, not east coast, so another 2 hours before the download links get activated.

No working link yet. 9:40 EST. I do, however, get an unwanted jpg of western rock formations that automatically downloads every time I reload this page, so there's that..... Edit: I don't intend this as a complaint (well, I wasn't loving the automatic jpg download, but that seems to have stopped), but as a confirmation that JB was not alone. Eagerly awaiting.

It's doubtful it means anything. I suspect shipping at Rhino is something akin to hurry up then wait. They don't do these mass mailings every day so they likely task rotate a small staff to handle these releases. When things ship, I bet they can get pretty overwhelmed and have to burn the midnight oil just to get through the week. I still haven't received my shipping notice yet. Vegas odds I get the box before the shipping notice? 3-1? Where's VGuy when you need him?

....that trying to figure out Rhino/Dead.net's shipping/notices is an exercise in futility. Any why the hell did i just watch the reveal video? PACIFIC NORTHWEST '73-'74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS BOXED SET: The music the Dead made during those six Pacific Northwest shows remains clear and powerful, more than forty years after the last notes rang out in the Hec Edmundson Pavilion in Seattle, WA. The release of these recordings fills in important parts of the official record. They show a band diving deeper into music, and if that’s driven in part by the need to escape from everything offstage, that simply underscores their ability to soar above even the most chaotic pressures when they performed. Time and age may have turned their stage into a crucible, increasingly removed from its genesis as an altar, as it had been in the Haight, but it was still capable of transforming them all, still capable of being a chalice inviting everyone to sip. - Nicholas G. Meriwether, A Key to Every Door: The Grateful Dead in the Pacific Northwest, 1973–1974

My orders almost always arrive a couple days later than most being in the Kansas City area; however, it's currently expected for Monday delivery. Hope your status has updated by now. Kind of surprised there's still boxes available.

...the Dead have been cleaning out their inventory over the past year or two from their own official website store.- No more Europe 72’ individual performances for sale - the Grateful Dead movie soundtrack/ 5 cd boxset is sold out. It took a long time and this past few months I had a feeling this package would sell out due to the release of the 73’-74’ Pacific northwest tour Box set which was officially released today. - and some more official releases that at the moment have slipped my mind. I’m getting old lol ha ha...I’ll just keep on smiling !!! :) Ps. I have a coupled sealed Europe 72‘ performances for sale if anyone’s interested. Send me a pm and maybe I can help a fellow sister or brother Grateful Dead fan. Any way, I hope everyone has a grateful weekend! Peace be with you all... :)

BWhite, you should receive an email with a redemption code and a link. Enter the code at the link and then get another email with the download link. Not sure how that is adding any layer of security....you do have to enter your email address (which of course you know because you have access to the email account) and your zip code. So I guess the entire convoluted process does insure that you know your zip code.

One Kind Favor, For those who are lucky enough to be getting this box on Saturday, I and others would like to know the dimensions of this box. (*)Length x (*)Width x (*)Height. (*)is the measurement in inches or in metric. The total weight, including the packaging, should be about 8 lbs./3.6 kg. For me it's about storage, and because I like the physical real-life box and the art. I like many others will have to wait until Tuesday when the box should arrive.
