The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Thanks for the link. Still slowly working my way thru the boxset. Got stuck on the first show, even though that was the only show I was somewhat familiar with. What beautiful music! With headphones on the reel that as that first birdsong must've been one of the reels at the bottom of the soggy trunk in the barn. Such a shame, but still extraordinary. Since I don't have FW69 set, this ranks up there for me with both the 3 show '73 box and the Europe 72 release. From what everyone's posted here, I can't wait till I dip my toe in '74. Since there seems to be All Music Editions of recent boxset releases (E72, May77 GSTL, 30TATS), shouldn't the FW69 release be worthy of an AME release for the 50th Anniversary???

Happy happy!

The beauty of a box arrived this AM. Got a lot of rippin' and listenin' to do this afternoon/evening (dialed up to "11" of course). Kudos to all involved. Aesthetically, this set is certainly a treasure. And from all accounts so far, it sounds like the music follows suit. BTW, I haven't read any mention of the gold key in the stash box. Has anyone figured out what that's for?

the PNW artwork is outstanding

Just wanted to jump in with a compliment for Dave & Co. that they seized an opportunity for truly meaningful artwork on this box and, over time, I think my appreciation will grow. The animal and bird motifs are simple, powerful, mysterious and the color palates are all laid-back and inviting to the eyes. I'm so glad not to see more skulls... with or without frigging wigs, beards, etc. We only got as far as Disc 2 of the first show last Friday night (only 2 1/2 hrs of music!!) but the sound is amazing and the performance is top-notch. I even loved the live dialing in the mix on Bertha, as it reminded me that that practice was prevalent in '73 and as we were always coming on to the lysergic at start time, it never failed to mess with our heads. We got two box sets and both are in perfect condition. I say that not in smugness -- sorry for those who've got missing or scratched discs -- but to add that a lot of things went right with this box and I'm very stoked to dive in further.

Wall of Sound

Came across this little video yesterday as I was poking around. It's clearly brand new as it has several references to this box set. I can't quite place the accent of the dude narrating (he's a bit out of his element) but nonetheless it was an interesting perspective on The Wall and how it went on to pioneer sound for the rest of anyone wanting to pay attention to this stuff: https://youtu.be/r86Sb4heCWM I've been through each show in the box at this point and now onto 2nd or 3rd takes. I am struck by the awesomeness of the first '73 show which I had never heard; that 26+ minute Truckin' gets into some wide ranging territory I have to say - it surprised and delighted. The fact you get a Bird Song, China>Rider, Here Comes Sunshine, then that massive sequence in the second set makes this a strong contender for best in the box. But then again, that Dark Star show. And Portland '74. Oh yeah and that 47 min Playin in the last show - which I have now listened to twice - truly does deliver for the entire experience. I was equally blown away by that. Box Rocks. Dark Star Quartet?

As "Exile" pointed out, Keith seems to be absent from the 6/24/73 Dark Star. I can't hear him at all on this released version until the very last minutes. On the internet archive version, I can hear him around the 12-14 minute mark (barely), and then just sporadically thereafter. What was going on with Keith? He sounds fine just before and after the Dark Star. So, basically, we have a 73 quartet version of Dark Star. A psychedelic chamber music quartet. Just an observation. I love this release. It's easily tied for my favorite box with Fillmore 69 and E72.

Headspace

After a week of listening to this magic box in my car and while working, I finally got a chance to kick back this weekend with a pair of headphones on and let it all wash over me. Such a warm, rich, vibrant sound. This box is fast becoming one of my favorites. As for the Portland 74 vocal drop outs: sure, at first listen I was somewhat disappointed. But drifting along with those tunes inside my headspace, I actually dig hearing the music take the forefront for a while. Doesn't really bother me at all.

Box of Music

The box itself is cool although I would have been happy with something less extravagant and therefor less expensive and easier to store/display. I'm fortunate that I have furniture that can accommodate it's size (likewise the Europe 72 trunk) but I'm sure that's not the case for many. Hopefully the next large offering will take this issue into account. Enjoying the accompanying book and kudos to Nicholas G. Meriwether for using "champing at the bit" instead of chomping. Just a personal gripe of mine but appreciate that somebody finally got it right.For the music itself, the Vancouver '73 was always a favorite audience tape and this recording is a real treasure. It has a certain gentle aspect to it that envelopes you like a cozy blanket. Sounds a little silly but...what can I say? I'm lagging a bit on listening but I've checked out most of the Portland '73 show. To my ears the sound quality and performance is not as good as the Vancouver show and I'm a little surprised they chose this one for a vinyl pressing. In any case I'm real happy to have this collection and looking forward to the next big drop. Thanks for all the hard work.

it was like, "meh. it's OK." now with the polishing, I can hear the dynamics, and the energy of the show. on to Portland

Mine would look very similar, but I can never decide if FW69 or E72 is tops. They flip flop. Note for note, FW69 is the one, but the sheer volume of glory in E72 is hard to overlook. I'd probably knock 30 Trips down to behind GSTL too, but again, it's splitting hairs.

Is it just me?

I hate to be a complainer but I am really annoyed here. If the release date is 9/7/18, shouldn't the set be shipped in time to arrive today??? Dave's Pick always arrive on release day. I've got some cool stuff happening this weekend that I've been envisioning this set being the soundtrack for. Now I get my shipping notice and it's going to arrive on Monday? To say that I'm bummed is an understatement. I guess I'll try to psych myself up for receiving in time for the...middle of the work week.

rhino and shipping

unless you are really new here, this happens every box release.based on past experiences since rhino licensed the vault, this seems to be the usual release day stuff. paying extra to get it expedited, makes you think you might get it on release day, but expedited shipping only works once it has already gone on sale and is in the warehouse. there is no difference in delivery time on preorders, everything goes out UPS at the same time the day before it goes on sale. preordering a digital set is a crap shoot, people are still waiting for the July 1978 flacs that they preordered. CA time is when the digital links will go online, not east coast, so another 2 hours before the download links get activated.

Pretty accurate list. I actually prefer the first May 77 box set to GSTL, but not enough to squabble about. For me, the gap between the top two and the rest of the releases is pretty wide.

I have just started the first show and they are still trying to get the mix right on Bertha I can tell already that this box is without a doubt the best sounding officially released 73 shows.

Now we're talking. Encouraging news... in the end it's all about the sound. I am holding hope that someone gets the physical box today. ...but really, we have already waited 45 years for this, what's another day or two. I love it all, but this box scratches my sweet spot.

It's doubtful it means anything. I suspect shipping at Rhino is something akin to hurry up then wait. They don't do these mass mailings every day so they likely task rotate a small staff to handle these releases. When things ship, I bet they can get pretty overwhelmed and have to burn the midnight oil just to get through the week. I still haven't received my shipping notice yet. Vegas odds I get the box before the shipping notice? 3-1? Where's VGuy when you need him?

....that trying to figure out Rhino/Dead.net's shipping/notices is an exercise in futility. Any why the hell did i just watch the reveal video? I believe people have been receiving shipping notices starting mid-week. I received mine late Thurs. and slated for delivery on Tues. 9/11. I don't think you'll get a notice until it actually ships. Others including myself have gotten the notice AFTER receiving the physical product.

It took a long time and this past few months I had a feeling this package would sell out due to the release of the 73’-74’ Pacific northwest tour Box set which was officially released today. - and some more official releases that at the moment have slipped my mind. I’m getting old lol ha ha...I’ll just keep on smiling !!! :) Ps. I have a coupled sealed Europe 72‘ performances for sale if anyone’s interested. I took the afternoon off and kayaked the river I live on.. We put on perfectly timed as to crawl out of the river and meet the UPS guy, hopeful for a delivery. Denied!!! Oh well.. sometime next week. No listening party for me, no 73/74 for me until the great box arrives. Keep the reviews coming should anyone get theirs.

BWhite, you should receive an email with a redemption code and a link. Enter the code at the link and then get another email with the download link. Not sure how that is adding any layer of security....you do have to enter your email address (which of course you know because you have access to the email account) and your zip code. So I guess the entire convoluted process does insure that you know your zip code.

Mine downloaded in about half an hour without a hitch. Sounds as smooth and sweet as expected. Ought to hold me over until the actual box set arrives on Tuesday (though tracking shows it moving pretty quickly, so hoping for sooner).

The dimensions of this PNW 73-74 box

One Kind Favor, For those who are lucky enough to be getting this box on Saturday, I and others would like to know the dimensions of this box. (*)Length x (*)Width x (*)Height. (*)is the measurement in inches or in metric. The total weight, including the packaging, should be about 8 lbs./3.6 kg. For me it's about storage, and because I like the physical real-life box and the art. I like many others will have to wait until Tuesday when the box should arrive.
